Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

1.. Addresses the learning styles of a diverse group of students.
2. Supports students with visual and auditory impairments by allowing them to watch and listen to video.
3. Increases student engagement.
4. Allows students to demonstrate what they know in a different way.
Lesson idea implementation:
This project will be introduced at the conclusion of a unit of study on Martin Luther King Jr. Students will be
able to access BrainPop videos about Martin Luther King, and complete a graphic organizer listing some of his
contributions to the Civil Rights movement. The students will then have 2 days to work in pairs in the
computer lab to produce their short video (no more than 3 minutes in length) using the iMovie application.
Students will find and add images of Martin Luther King Jr., and incorporate a short video clip into their own
video. The teacher will assist each pair of students with technical issues as needed and provide feedback.
At the conclusion of the lesson, the videos will be shared on the classroom blog. They will be assessed using
a simple rubric. They will also be saved and shown during the morning video announcements during Black
History month.
Importance of technology:
This project could not be completed without the use of technology. The video editing components allows
the images to be incorporated and also music to be added. It also allows students of all ages and abilities to
create professional looking videos.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
To minimize risk, I would limit the sources students could use to search for images. I would also go over
internet safety measures with the students before the project began. I would post a description of the
project and the internet safety measures that were being incorporated to alleviate the fears of parents.

Reflective Practice:
I feel this lesson will allow students to not only learn facts about Martin Luther King Jr., but increase their
understanding as they create a moving and impactful video. I believe by incorporating this video project,
student engagement and excitement will be enhanced. It also allows them an unique opportunity to truly
show what they have learned with others.
