1.6 Hazardous Material Information

In view of the Disposal Law of 27 Aug. 86 (AbfG. §11 Special Wastes) the owner of special wastes is
responsible for its care and the employer also has, according to the Hazardous Material Law of 01 Oct.
86 (GefStoffV, §17 General Protection Responsibility), a responsibility to protect his employees, we must
make note that:
a) all flowmeter primaries and/or flowmeter converters which are returned to ABB Automation Products
GmbH for repair are to be free of any hazardous materials (acids, bases, solvents, etc.).
b) the flowmeter primaries must be flushed so that the hazardous materials are neutralized. There
are cavities in the primaries between the metering tube and the housing. Therefore after metering
hazardous materials, these cavities are to be neutralized (see Hazardous Material Law -GefStoffV).
c) for service and repairs written confirmation is required that the measures listed in a) and b) have
been carried out.
d) any costs incurred to remove the hazardous materials during a repair will be billed to the owner of
the equipment.

Principle of Operation

3 Principle of Operation
The application proven, rugged metal tube flowmeters of the Series AM54 include an intelligent 2-wire
electronic converter, i.e. the supply voltage and the output signals utilize the same leads. The flowmeter
can be used metering the flow of liquids, gases and steam in the Process, Chemical, Pharmaceutical as
well as in the Food industries. It especially suitable for installations where aggressive or opaque fluids are
to be metered or in those applications where glass meter tube flowmeters cannot be used because of
safety considerations. The metal tube flowmeters are indispensable where high pressure and/or high
temperature operating conditions exist. The flowmeter primary is made of a conical meter tube with
welded flanges, see Fig. 1. A magnet embedded in the float transmits the position of the float in the meter
tube, which is a measure of the flowrate, over a decouple proof magnet follower system. The flowrate
value can be read on a scale from the position of the pointer, which is mounted on a shaft, and
simultaneously on the display. The flowrate value is processed in the 2-wire converter into a proportional,
linear output signal (4−20 mA).
HART-Protocol capability, an optional pulse output and the ability to linearized the flowrate curve are
outstanding features of this instrument. The HART-Protocol enables digital communication between a
Process Control System/PC, Handheld Terminal and the flowmeter. The modular design of the float
allows changes to be made, within certain limits, in order to change the flow ranges in existing
instruments. This feature allows existing instruments to be utilized for other application tasks. An added
benefit is the ability to quickly modify instruments in stock for use in a wide spectrum of application
requirements.
The flowmeters of the Series AM54 are available with the following options:
AM54_71 Indicator only

Installation

4 Installation

4.1 Installation Requirements

• Remove shipping protectors.
• The flowmeter must be installed vertically.
• The pipeline size should correspond to the flowmeter connection size.
• The flowmeter should be isolated from pipeline vibrations.
• Unobstructed in- and outlet sections are usually not required. Valves or elbows may be connected
directly to the flowmeter flanges
• Observe the operating condition limits defined in the Specification Sheet.
• Assure that there are no magnetic fields (motors) present which can affect the measurement results.
• When the flowmeter is to be installed in a pipeline in which an interruption of service is undesirable
or impossible, a bypass line should be installed as shown in Fig. 2.
• For flowmeter primaries with PTFE gasket surfaces the flange bolts should not be tightened beyond
the following maximum torque values:
1/2” to 1-1/2” DN 15 to 40 14 Nm
2” DN 50 25 Nm
3” DN 80 35 Nm
4: DN 100 42 Nm
• The presence of turbulence, pulsations or other flow instabilities may produce float oscillations
whose amplitude may build up to such a magnitude that the float may impact the mechanical stops in
the meter tube.
• See also VDI/VDE Guideline 3513 Sheet 3 “Selection and Installation Recommendations for
Variable Area Flowmeters”.

4.2 Pressure Drop

The pressure which exists in the flowmeter must be sufficient to satisfy the pressure drop through the
flowmeter primary. This pressure drop is made up of the constant pressure drop across the float plus the
pressure drop through the fittings and the flowmeter. The later increases as the square of the flow
velocity. The pressure drop values are listed in the Specification Sheet.

4.3 Minimum Required Pressure for Gas Metering

Even with pulsation free flows, spontaneous pulsations of the float are possible (float bounce). These
pulsations generally occur when a specific critical volume before and after the float to the nearest throttle
point up- and downstream from the flowmeter is exceeded and when both the pressure and flowrate are
low. If the operating pressure is below the minimum value listed in the Specification Sheet, it is possible
to provide a design with a gas damping option to eliminate these pulsations.
To eliminate the self-induced compression pulsations (float bounce) the following measures can be
employed:
• Select a flowmeter with the lowest pressure drop.
• Utilize short pipe sections between the flowmeter and the nearest up- and downstream throttling
locations.
• The inside diameter of the pipeline should not be larger than connection size of the flowmeter
primary.
• Reduce the flowrate range from the usual 10 % - 100 % to 25 % - 100 %.
• Set the flowrate by approaching the required value from a higher flowrate.
• Increase the operating pressure while taking into account the change in the flowrate indication due to
the change in the gas density at the new operating conditions.

4.4 Pulsation Damping

The presence of turbulence, pulsations or other flow instabilities may produce float oscillations. This often
occurs in installations which include piston pumps or compressors. The installation of a pulsation
dampener may provide relief. When used in liquid systems the pulsation dampener may utilize a
pressurized gas volume pad on top of the liquid surface. If the gas may not contact the fluid, accumulators
may be utilized.

4.5 Fluids Containing Solids

For fluids which contain magnetic particles, such as iron filings, etc., the danger exists that these
magnetic particles may become attached to the float. The accuracy will be affected in an adverse manner.
In such applications we recommend the use of a magnetic separator. During installation of the flowmeter
it is inserted in the inlet between the flanges of the pipeline and of the flowmeter (see Fig. 3).
As a rule, solid particles in the fluid cause increased mechanical friction and thereby increased wear on
the float metering edge. In such installations an appropriate filter should be provided.

Fig. 3: Magnetic Separator

Start-up

5 Start-up
• Carefully deaerate liquids to prevent pressure shocks due to gas bubbles.
• Slowly increase the pressure when metering gases.
• Basically the flowrate should be varied using valves (control valves) in a manner to prevent sudden
flow changes from adversely affecting the float motion. These might damage the flowmeter.
• The utilization of the gas damping option should not be used to compensate for flow change shocks.

6 Modifications and Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning the Flowmeter

If the float and metering tube are contaminated due to the presence of solids, an inspection should be
conducted to assure that the accuracy can be maintained. For this inspection the flowmeter primary must
be removed from the pipeline.

6.2 Exchanging the Float

6.2.1 DN 15
Remove the circlip (Fig. 16, Part 132) and bar (Fig. 16, Part 131) from below. Withdraw the float housing
downwards.

6.2.2 DN 15 with gas-pressure damper

If the float is blocked check the damper piston's freedom of movement in the damper cylinder. Dirt
particulates or mechanical damage can impede the float's freedom of motion of in the metre tube.
The damping cylinder or the float limit (Fig. 16, Part 130) touches the apex seal of the outlet flange and
can be withdrawn upwards. When reinstalling, the O-ring (Part 130.4) should be checked to see that it is
in perfect condition.
The float can be removed as described in 6.2.2.

6.2.3 −DN 100

DN 25−
Using a suitable pair of pliers or 2 screwdrivers press the outlet float limit (Fig. 17, Part 130) slightly
together and pull it upwards out of the groove. The float can then be withdrawn upwards.

6.2.4 −DN 80 with gas-pressure damping

DN 25−
If the float is blocked check the damper piston's freedom of movement in the damper cylinder. Dirt
particulates or mechanical damage can impede the float's freedom of motion of in the meter tube.
Remove the spring ring (Fig. 17 and Fig. 18, Part 135) and withdraw the damper cylinder or float limit
upwards. The float can then be removed from above.

6.2.5 General information

The float's measuring head should be thoroughly inspected at the measuring edge to check if it is in
perfect condition. The measuring edge should be sharp and free of damage, as otherwise the measuring
instrument's accuracy could be significantly influenced.
In the event of damage we recommend that the float be replaced. The model number and the device
number on the ratings shield should be stated when ordering a new one.

9.3 HART-protocol/SMART-Vision communication

The HART protocol provides digital communication between a process control system/PC, hand terminal
and the AM54_. All instruments, including measuring point parameters, can thus be transferred from the
current transformer to the process control system or PC. Conversely, it is also possible to reconfigure
the current transformer in this way. Digital communication proceeds by means of an alternating current
overlayed onto the analogue output (4−20 mA) which does not influence the evaluation instruments
connected to the system. The SMART-Vision programme can be use for operating and configuring the
system. SMART-VISION is a universal communications software for intelligent field instruments,
exploiting different communications pathways and thus allowing data exchange with a complete
spectrum of field instruments. The main objectives of use are parameter indication, configuration,
diagnosis, documentation and data management for all intelligent field instruments which themselves
fulfil the requirements of communication.
The following communications possibilities and communications pathways can be achieved:

HART-communication
1. via FSK modem with point-to-point or multidrop operation
2. via ABB automation products HART-multiplexer
SMART-Vision can be run on modern standard PCs or Notebooks with MS Windows from Version 3.1,
MS Windows 95/98 or MS Windows NT.

While the data is being entered, the current transformer remains online, i.e. electrical and pulse output
continue to indicate current operational status. Below is a description of the individual key functions:

C/CE The C/CE key allows you to switch from operational mode into the menu and vice
versa.
STEP ↑ The STEP key is one of two arrow keys. Use STEP to scroll forwards in the menu.
All desired parameters can be retrieved.
DATA ↓ The DATA key is one of two arrow keys. Use DATA to scroll backwards in the me-
nu. The DATA key allows retrieval of all desired parameters.
ENTER The ENTER function is activated by simultaneously pressing the two arrow keys
STEP and DATA. Use ENTER to switch the programming protector on or off. Use
ENTER also to access the parameter to be changed and to set the new parameter
selected or set. The ENTER function is only operational for about 20 seconds. If no
data is entered within these 20 seconds, the current transformer indicates the old va-
lue on the display. If a further 20 seconds pass, the process information appears.

Execution of ENTER function when operating magnetic pin

The ENTER function is executed when the DATA/ENTER sensor is used for longer than 3 seconds. The
flashing display indicates that the function is active. The ENTER function can be used with the Data key
too.

EMC protection is compromised when the cover is open.

10.2 Additional Configuration Information

10.2.1 Low Flow Cutoff

Entry range: 1−10%

*Low Flow Cutoff*

10 %

The value set in this parameter is the lowest flowrate which will be metered. If the flowrate drops below
this value the flowrate is set to 0, i.e. the current output is set to 4 mA and the flow totalization is
interrupted. For Variable Area Flowmeters this value should be set to 5 % because of the flowmeter
characteristics.

10.2.2 Current Output

20 mA

4 mA

0 Low flow cutoff Qmax Q

The values of the current output in the above curve have the following behavior: Above the low flow cutoff
value the current has a linear characteristic whose intercept is Q=0 is 4 mA and which at Qmax, a function
of the operating mode, has a value of 20 mA. Based on the low flow cutoff value entry the output is set
to 0, i.e. 4 mA, when the flowrate is less than x% Qmax.

10.2.3 Iout atAlarm

Iout at Alarm
(22.0 mA)

The converter incorporates a comprehensive system self monitoring function. When an error condition is
detected a message is displayed and the current output is set to the fixed value indicated in this
parameter. This data can be set up “Iout at alarm”.

10.2.4 Totalizer Overflow

Tot. Overflow
0

The number of totalizer overflows is displayed in this parameter. The maximum number of totalizer
overflows is 65535. The overflow totalizer then overflows and starts counting a 0 again.
The actual totalizer value can be calculated in the following manner:
Example: 12 overflows, totalizer value = 12345 m3
12 ⋅ 10 000 000 = 120 000 000 m3
+ 12 345 m3
120 012 345 m3

14.3 Special Installation Instructions

14.3.1 Connecting the Pressure Tight

EEx “d” Design
The electrical connections to the flowmeter are made using the cable connector on the instrument. It is
also possible to make the connections using an approved conduit connector (installed directly at the
instrument) with flame arrestor (remove the cable connector already installed). The requirements per EN
50018 must be observed. Special approved test certificates must be available for the conduit connectors.
The use of ordinary design cable and lead feedthrus and seal plugs is not permissible.
Any unused openings are to closed in accordance with the requirements in EN 50 018. When using
conduit systems the mechanical flame arrestors are to be installed in the immediate vicinity of the
housing.

14.3.2 Connecting Through the Pressure Tight Cable Connector

The outside diameter of the unshielded connection cable must be between 8.0 and 11.7 mm. After
installing the cable in the connector the compression nut is to be tightened to a torque of 32.5 Nm.
An additional strain relief is to be attached to the housing (see Fig. 28)
