Notes and • the contents of the Instruction Bulletin.
Regulations to be
• the Safety Instructions attached to the instrument.
Considered
• the applicable safety regulations for the installation and operation of electrical equipment.
The operator has the sole and complete responsibility for well informed operation in accordance with the
specifications and thereby safe operation.
The user must assure that the target groups understand the contents of the Instruction Bulletin. A copy
of the Instruction Bulletin must always be available at the instrument installation location and kept in a
designated place.
National The Regulations, Standards and Guidelines referenced in this Instruction Bulletin are applicable in
Regulations Germany. The applicable National Regulations must be observed when using the instruments in other
countries.
DANGER This symbol is used for all Safety Notes in this Instruction Bulletin which
impact personnel safety. Observe these Safety Notes. Please inform
other users of these Safety Notes.
In addition to the Safety Notes in this Instruction Bulletin, the generally
applicable safety and accident prevention requirements must also be
considered.
WARNING This symbol is used in this Instruction Bulletin to identify the special
considerations which must be observed relative the Regulations,
Specifications, Notes and the correct sequence of operations, as well as
those important for preventing damage or destruction of the instrument.
• General lists.
Table 1: Symbols and their Significance
Information Tags at It is essential to observe the Information Tags located at the user work site and the Information Tags on
the Site the instruments.
Prior to an instrument start-up/restart-up check that the connected supply power agrees with the
specifications on the Instrument Tag.
The user must have the installation checked and tested by a qualified electrical technician prior to the
initial start-up for:
• correct assembly,
• correct installation and
• correct operation,
• fire alarm and fire extinguishing equipment.
During Operation The operator must have a qualified electrical technician check the installation at specific time intervals for:
• correct assembly,
• correct installation and
• correct operation.
The time intervals for the checks are to be selected so that possible problems, which are bound to occur,
are recognized in a timely manner.
The checks must be conducted at least once every three years.
The checks are not required if the electrical system is constantly being monitored by a responsible
engineer.
The operator must:
• maintain the system in a proper condition,
• constantly monitor the system,
• immediately undertake any required maintenance and repair operations and
• satisfy the required safety measures.
Clean the instruments often when operating in regions where dust may initiate hazardous explosions.
During Before maintenance and/or repair operations are performed on electrical equipment or instruments, the
Maintenance and supply power to the equipment or instruments must be disconnected. The disconnect location must be
Repair identified by a warning tag, e.g.
In an emergency, immediately turn the equipment off using the Emergency Off
switch.
3 Principle of Operation
The application proven, rugged metal tube flowmeters of the Series AM54 include an intelligent 2-wire
electronic converter, i.e. the supply voltage and the output signals utilize the same leads. The flowmeter
can be used metering the flow of liquids, gases and steam in the Process, Chemical, Pharmaceutical as
well as in the Food industries. It especially suitable for installations where aggressive or opaque fluids are
to be metered or in those applications where glass meter tube flowmeters cannot be used because of
safety considerations. The metal tube flowmeters are indispensable where high pressure and/or high
temperature operating conditions exist. The flowmeter primary is made of a conical meter tube with
welded flanges, see Fig. 1. A magnet embedded in the float transmits the position of the float in the meter
tube, which is a measure of the flowrate, over a decouple proof magnet follower system. The flowrate
value can be read on a scale from the position of the pointer, which is mounted on a shaft, and
simultaneously on the display. The flowrate value is processed in the 2-wire converter into a proportional,
linear output signal (4−20 mA).
HART-Protocol capability, an optional pulse output and the ability to linearized the flowrate curve are
outstanding features of this instrument. The HART-Protocol enables digital communication between a
Process Control System/PC, Handheld Terminal and the flowmeter. The modular design of the float
allows changes to be made, within certain limits, in order to change the flow ranges in existing
instruments. This feature allows existing instruments to be utilized for other application tasks. An added
benefit is the ability to quickly modify instruments in stock for use in a wide spectrum of application
requirements.
The flowmeters of the Series AM54 are available with the following options:
AM54_71 Indicator only

5 Start-up
• Carefully deaerate liquids to prevent pressure shocks due to gas bubbles.
• Slowly increase the pressure when metering gases.
• Basically the flowrate should be varied using valves (control valves) in a manner to prevent sudden
flow changes from adversely affecting the float motion. These might damage the flowmeter.
• The utilization of the gas damping option should not be used to compensate for flow change shocks.

Data Input
Data input occurs via the three entry keys DATA, STEP and C/CE on the display or, when the casing is
closed, using the magnetic pin.
STEP
C/CE
DATA/ENTER
While the data is being entered, the current transformer remains online, i.e. electrical and pulse output
continue to indicate current operational status. Below is a description of the individual key functions:
C/CE The C/CE key allows you to switch from operational mode into the menu and vice
versa.
STEP ↑ The STEP key is one of two arrow keys. Use STEP to scroll forwards in the menu.
All desired parameters can be retrieved.
DATA ↓ The DATA key is one of two arrow keys. Use DATA to scroll backwards in the me-
nu. The DATA key allows retrieval of all desired parameters.
ENTER The ENTER function is activated by simultaneously pressing the two arrow keys
STEP and DATA. Use ENTER to switch the programming protector on or off. Use
ENTER also to access the parameter to be changed and to set the new parameter
selected or set. The ENTER function is only operational for about 20 seconds. If no
data is entered within these 20 seconds, the current transformer indicates the old va-
lue on the display. If a further 20 seconds pass, the process information appears.

The meter is ready for flow metering.
The value set in this parameter is the lowest flowrate which will be metered. If the flowrate drops below
this value the flowrate is set to 0, i.e. the current output is set to 4 mA and the flow totalization is
interrupted. For Variable Area Flowmeters this value should be set to 5 % because of the flowmeter
characteristics.
20 mA
4 mA
The values of the current output in the above curve have the following behavior: Above the low flow cutoff
value the current has a linear characteristic whose intercept is Q=0 is 4 mA and which at Qmax, a function
of the operating mode, has a value of 20 mA. Based on the low flow cutoff value entry the output is set
to 0, i.e. 4 mA, when the flowrate is less than x% Qmax.
Iout at Alarm
(22.0 mA)
The converter incorporates a comprehensive system self monitoring function. When an error condition is
detected a message is displayed and the current output is set to the fixed value indicated in this
parameter. This data can be set up “Iout at alarm”.
Tot. Overflow
0
The number of totalizer overflows is displayed in this parameter. The maximum number of totalizer
overflows is 65535. The overflow totalizer then overflows and starts counting a 0 again.
The actual totalizer value can be calculated in the following manner:
Example: 12 overflows, totalizer value = 12345 m3
12 ⋅ 10 000 000 = 120 000 000 m3
+ 12 345 m3

Float flowmeters, which are operated in guaranteed conformance with the maximum values in category
3 (zone 2), can subsequently be operated unaltered in category 2 (zone 1) in accordance with the relevant
maximum values.
When cleaning the inspection glass, care should be taken to ensure that it is not electrostatically charged.
To this end use a damp cloth to clean it.
Temperature ranges:
Cables rated for use under temperatures of up to T = 110 °C can be used without reservation for the
supply current terminals 41, 42 and switching outputs 51, 52. Cables rated for use up to T = 80 °C must,
in the event of a fault, consider that the two circuits will be interconnected, otherwise the temperature data
listed below is valid.
