AUTHOR’S NOTE

All relationships are not named. Some are friends , lovers,

brothers, sisters, etc…but all relationships don’t have a name.
There are relationships that stand above love, which is more pure
than love. When I carry a person to the hospital and give him a
glass of water, what is the name of that relationship ? he is
stranger to me. This is the story of such a relation. A relation that
doesn’t have a name. but here people believe each other. Nobody
betrays anybody purposely. Where there is love, care and much
more.nobody expects anything in return. Money dont have a role to
play.

The greatest profession in this world is that of a doctor.its my

personal choice though.
A patient sitting infront of the doctor is a stranger to him.but the
doctor helps him.why?
Is it for money ? is it for fame ? then he have faster ways to gain
both.why did he choose this profession?why should he help that
patient ?he is a total stranger to him. Then those reading may say
that the doctor is bound to help him rite ? its his duty ? but why
should the doctor still do that? He can refer it to some other
doctor.he will still be paid for that visit. He doesn’t have any risks
too. Its something beyond all that. It’s a relationship that sprouts
there. The patient believes the doctor. That’s why every patient
enters the operation theatre when the doctor asks to do so. Only if
the doctor really wants to save that person will he survive.
Otherwise even if the doctor has qualified the greatest course from
the greatest institution he will not be able to save that patient. He
needs to take care of the belief the patient has on him.then even if
he doesn’t knw anything he can save him.
That’s something special. A miracle.a mystery. That no one can
solve.
But what if that belief is broken ? not on purpose though. Should
the doctor be sacked ? murdered? What benefit does it give the
patient? The joy of meeting the doctor at heaven? But don’t
mistakes happent to all of us ? its true a doctor cant afford a
mistake.that too in a opereation theatre when he has a patient who
believed lying unconscious in front of him.hoping to survive. Right
? Anyways what you read till now was a cliché. But yes life is
always made out of clichés and not miracles .

This is the story of a relationship between a doctor and a

patient.how it starts, how it grows and eventually how it ends.
you may not get what you expect from this but as a writer let me
hope you get something from this.

(ROSEGARDEN HOSPITAL , SOMWHERE ON EARTH)

A busy Monday morning. All the doctors busy with their rounds
and operations and O.P.
Sounds of ambulances, nurses running around.long queue at the
pharmacy. Patients eagerly waiting to meet their doctors. All the
usual scenes that you see in a hospital.

(at the reception)

“a token to meet the physician please”..
The receptionist asked Giri to fill in his details and to pay Rs100/-.
The token read 13.
He waited in front of the doctor’s room which read ‘Dr. Rajesh
Roy, Physician’. Rajesh was a man in his late 40’s and was quite
experienced. He greeted Giri with a smile and asked him to sit near
by.The doctor opened the file and read. “Giri, age 25.”what are
you doing Giri” . Giri was a teacher in a govt school. Rajesh was
surprised to hear that. A time when everyone ‘s going behind IT
here is a man working as a teacher. Rajesh appreciated Giri for
that.”Lets move on.whats your problem sirji”.Giri explained that
he suffered an unusual breathing problem 2 days before and was
the reason he was here.Rajesh took the stethoscope and did some
preliminary examinations. “Giri , I will write some medical tests.
Complete that and meet me with the reports at the eariliest”
“any problem doctor”.”Absolutely no problem sirji.its just to
clarify some implications”.
Rajesh laughed and made the mood light.Giri left the room quite
relaxed.

The next day Giri returned to meet Rajesh. An appointment was

booked in advance. As he entered the room Rajesh was examining
the reports quite carefully. He asked Giri to have a glass of water
and said that he was referring Giri to the cardiology department
since he had some doubts in the report.Giri was matured enough to
accept that.Giri was accompanied by Rajesh to meet Dr. Ravi the
only cardiologist in the hospital.Ravi had started his individual
practice lately but had been the junior of some famous cardiologist
and was a close companion of Rajesh. Ravi in his early 30’s was
surprised to find Rajesh coming to his room. Giri waited outside
while the doctors had a bit of a chat. Ravi called Giri in and
explained that there was nothing to worry but he had to be
admitted in the hospital for some further check-ups.Giri was given
the room in the 2nd floor.Room no 124.Late in the evening Ravi
after completeing his rounds went to meet Giri. Giri was anxious to
know about his physical condition . Ravi started of the same way
like Rajesh but this time Giri was a bit hesistant to answer with his
anxiousness overpowering him.
Ravi slowly explained that on examining the reports Giri was
primarily diagonised with a block in his heart and his reports had
been sent to higher doctors and is waiting for a response from
them. A wave of silence filled the room. Ravi slowly left the room.
Half-an hour later Ravi came back and was surprised to find that
Giri welcomed him with a smile . This time both of them were
having a friendly chat. Both of them being of the same age groups
had a lot of things to talk about. Giri explained that his father and
mother were dead and he was living alone for the past 8 years and
that his marriage had been fixed lately. Everytime Ravi was
replying he noticed Giri disconnecting somebody’s phone call and
asked him to pick it up at one point in the conversation which Giri
refused. Ravi at that moment didn’t bother to enquire who was that
but just left the room bidding bye for the day after a one –hour-
long chat.

The next morning when Ravi came for the morning rounds he met
Giri and asked how the night was . Giri was very pleasant and
they had light conversation and Ravi left the room. In the afternoon
when Dr Rajesh visited Giri he enquired if he had anybody to
come stay with him while he was in the hospital. Giri was about to
answer a name but immediately replied no and he didn’t have any
problem staying alone. Ravi, when he came for the evening rounds
to Giri;s room enquired about the last night’s phone call. Giri was a
little hesistant to answer but Ravi in a very jovial manner asked
him to reply.Giri said it was his fiancée and her name was Saranya.
Ravi enquired where he met her and Giri was quite happy to
explain it to him because both of them had grown a relationship so
strong with in a span of 2 days. Ravi was expecting the usual lover
boy stuff .He was quite surprised to find no parks ,no cinemas,no
coffeeshop love scenes.Giri had known the girl just a fortnight
before.Sarnaya was his distant relative. She was never a city
girl. She was a clerk in a co-operative bank and was living in a
hostel in the city.Village was her world. Her father, mother and her
brother.The temple,the festival,the temple pond , the typical Indian
girl.Pubs, malls and parties did not attract her.She never fell for the
so called ‘city status ‘. She remained true to herself.
Giri told how he happenend to meet her at a relative’s marriage and
how they talked a lot about each other and how they decided to get
married. But even when he said all this , there was a pathos in his
voice.Ravi assured him that he would make Giri fit for the
marriage and wished him well.A sense of hope flickered through
Giri’s eyes.A ray of hope brought a smile in his face.. The friends
bid farewell for the day. Giri fell into a happy sleep dreaming
about his life with his beloved. But it was a sleepless night for
Ravi.he had assured Giri him back to life. But can he do dat? He
thought to himself. Possibly he could. He will do it. Someone had
believed in him now and he must keep up to it.He prayed for a
while and kept his thoughts away for a good night sleep.

Next morning at the reception:

“can I meet Dr Ravi,of the cardiology dept. pls”, a worried
Saranya asked the receptionist. “third room from the left” replied
the woman at the desk, hardly lifting her head from the register she
was checking.Sarnya quickly paced her steps into the room.
“May I come in?” . “you may pls” said Ravi in his deep voice. He
quickly recongised Sarnya having seen her photo in Giri’s
wallet.Ravi first asked to her relax and explained Giri’s condition
in a doctor’s way.She almost broke into tears.Ravi consoled her
and gave her a glass of water. Once she was relaxed both of them
went to Giri’s room.As they were about to enter Ravi signed her
not to cry.Giri was excited to see both of them. But he wondered
how Sarnya came to know abt him. Ravi explained that he was the
one who informed her and her told her everything.Giri didn’t feel
too good about that. But still he was happy of seeing her.Sarnya sat
beside Giri.Ravi slowly bid adieu to the couple because he felt he
should leave them for their own.The room was filled with ominous
silence. Both of them stared at each other like they have never seen
before. Giri broke the silence.”How did you know , I am here?” He
knew the answer but he just wanted to stir up a conversation with
her.”Ravi, told me.”she replied. “I have to be here for a few
days. The doctor has sent the reports..” .he was interrupted by
her.”Ravi told me everything”.
The two just stared at each other, looking straight into their
eyes.Their eyes spoke all they wanted to say to each other.
Giri’s eyes were dim.He was sad. Not bothered about his life but
about Saranya. He was confused and more importantly worried
about what will happen to her if something bad happens.None
would have understood his plight but her.She put up a brave
face, smiled and said “get well soon,I am waiting”. What a sense of
joy and enthusiasm it brought in him.To have a person to read your
eyes and understand your feelings was something great,he taught
to himself. He just smiled. There was a sudden knock on the door
and the nurse entered the room and handed over the prescription to
Saranya.”Get the medicines at the earliest. The dispensary is in the
ground floor”.Sarnaya along with the nurse left the room.Giri sat
beside the window glancing at infinity, and infinty glanced back at
him.His thoughts wandered around. He was happy at having
someone like her,but at the same time the gloom of losing her
lurked around his mind.Giri was quickly out of his trans just to see
Ravi standing infront of him.”the date for the operation has been
fixed. Its on the 29th of this month”said Ravi blankly.Giri quickly
looked at the calendar. It was 26 August. He smiled and said,” so
just 3 more days for me on this earth, right doctor?”.
Ravi did not answer. He did not even try to console him.He just
stood their with his head hung down.Saranya entered the room
with the pack of medicinesto find the unsual silence of the two
gentlemen. It was a surprise to Saranya. She glanced at Ravi, but he
didn’t even give her the slightest of his face. “The date for the
operation has been fixed, its on the 29th”.said Giri.Saranya glanced
at Ravi’s pale face. The room sunk into silence.
Giri made the mood light and said “Saranya, I have just 3 more
days left. You better find someone else to take care of you.”and he
managed to smile lightly.Saranya ran out of the room crying. It
was the first time he has seen her cry.It was all her love for him
that was flowing out of her eyes.Giri gathered strength and went to
stand beside her near the verandah where she was crying like a
small girl who has fought with her mother.Giri consoled her.Ravi
left the room.He had nothing to say.He was thinking of giving back
Giri to his beloved. He was worried.Later that evening Giri and
Saranya went to Ravi’s room with a request which Ravi could not
turn down even when he knew it was against the rules.Giri had
requested Ravi to allow him to spend those supposed to be last 3
days with Sarnaya.Probably the last few happy moments of his
life.Looking straight into those couples eyes Ravi could not
disagree, because he knew how much they loved each other. He
agreed. But he told them to be extremely careful and asked them to
come back on the eve of the operation date to which they
agreed. They left the room bidding good bye to Ravi.He sat in his
room looking at them.It was an unforgettable scene. Two love birds
flying.Ravi prayed that these love birds stay like this forever. He
hoped that let no hunter shoot down one of them for he knew the
other couldn’t survive.

Giri and Saranya were enjoying each moment to its fullest. They

went all around the city. They went in for a movie. But both of them
hardly knew what was happening on the screen. They kept staring
at each other in the darkness of the theatre. They went to the beach
in the evening. They played like kids of four in the water, running
back each time the waves came closer. They made sand castles on
the shore. They sat on the shore talking about infinte things which
only they understood. They were tired. They took a room in a
hotel. The room was spacious enough for the two. They didn’t
enquire about TV sets or laptop chargers because they knew that
they wouldn’t need them. They had each other to get engaged with.
It was Saranya’s decision to make a call to Ravi to let him know
that they were fine. They dialed the number from the phone at the
reception.Ravi picked the call.He was happy and more importantly
anxious about why they had called. They told him that they were
fine and thanked him for letting them enjoy like this.Giri’s eyes
were wet,But he made sure no one at the counter noted
that, especially Saranya. He handed the phone to her and she too
thanked Ravi.Ravi reminded her to be careful. The short and sweet
conversation ended their. They left for their room after having just a
tea from the cafeteria.Back in the room they sat in their respective
cots looking at each other. The day was closing.Saranya said that
they have to sleep since it was getting late. She wasn’t feeling
sleepy, but she didn’t want him to remain awake since he must be
tired after a eventful day. They switched off the night lamp. The
room was lightly illuminated by the light in the veranda.
Both of them they couldn’t sleep that night. Both of them kept
gazing at the ceiling without the other noticing. Both of them were
happy. They had spent a long time together today. They have had
wonderful moments. They slept expecting a better tomorrow.

The next day morning Saranya woke up early. She freshened

herself and woke up Giri,It was 7 and the sun was slowly rising.
They had their breakfast and decided to have a look around the
city. They went into the busy malls. They walked through the
packed streets. They did some shopping at the roadside shops.Giri
bought her a gift.A ring.A nice little ring.She was happy.He too
was.It was when they were waiting to board the bus to the hotel
that Giri experienced a sudden black out.He did want to let her
know. But he almost collapsed and fell on her.Saranya was crying
aloud for help. She called the cab and rushed him to the hospital. He
was still conscious. He was consoling her.He caught her arms and
Asked her “will you be mine ,in the next life as well ?”.She was
speechless. She hugged him and said “I always want to be
your’s,no matter what.”.They reached the hospital. He was in bad
state. The nurses rushed him to the operation theatre.Ravi was
informed. He quickly arrived. He saw Saranya waiting outside the
operation theatre in tears. He said, “don’t worry ,I will give him
back”.He patted on her shoulders and got into the theatre. It was all
set.The nurses had given Giri the anesthesia and he was asleep. He
looked at him.He said to himself “I want to you back my
friend.More than me she wants you”.Saranya was waiting outside
for operation to get over. Those 3 hours were like 3 years for
her.Ravi slowly came out of the theatre. He stood in front of
Saranya who was running towards him eagerly. He just stood
their.Speechless.The silence gave her all she wanted to know. She
slapped Ravi hardly and said “You broke your promise”.Ravi
didn’t want to react. He knew how she must be feeling. He just
walked away.She was shouting at him.He didn’t bother.Giri was
bought out of the theatre.Saranya hugged him and kissed him in his
forehead and said “If we meet in the next life, make sure that I am
your’s.”The stretcher moved away and she stood their all alone
crying.Saranya boarded the ambulance.Ravi looked through the
window of his room.He looked at it till it crossed the hospital
gate.He had lost his friend. He took his car and followed the
ambulance. It stopped at the cremation ground.Saranya’s parents
had reached there. After the cremation, Saranya went off with her
parents.Ravi watched her go.She looked through the back mirror at
Ravi.Tears were rolling down her cheeks.Ravi just kept looking at
her till the car was out his sight.

3 years later ,

(ROSEGARDEN HOSPITAL , SOMWHERE ON EARTH)

A letter addressed to Ravi was their at the reception desk.It had

been their for a week. The receptionist told the attender ,”the letter
is for Dr.Ravi.Give it to him”. “Isn’t he on long leave?”, asked the
attender.”He was since Giri passed away. But he is joining back
today”,said the receptionist. The attender reached the room and
handed the letter to Ravi.Ravi opened the letter. It was from
Saranya. He read the letter and tears fell into it.He wiped his tears,
and kept the letter aside.”next patient” Ravi called out.He was
again back busy with his work.
Saranya must also have been busy at her work. The letter must have
been an apology from her.She must have mentioned about
Giri. That could probably be the reason why he was crying.

People are not destined to be tied to you.Everyone leaves from our

lives when it is time for them to leave.Whatever happens, who ever
leaves our life must go on.It is not that we don’t remember them
anymore or we don’t love them anymore, but it just has to go on.
Saranya’s and Ravi’s life have started moving on without Giri.It
was destined to happen. And it has happened.Let the souls in
heaven and on earth rest in peace.
