Definition of Analytical Exposition Text

Definition of analytical exposition text is actually very easy to understand. Word “Analytical” means, “examining or
liking to examine things very carefully” (Cambridge). That is, (examining or relating to checking / testing
something carefully). Then, the meaning of exposition, I have explained in the article about hortatory exposition,
that is “a comprehensive description” or a broad explanation.

Thus, the definition of Analytical Exposition can be understood as a text that tries to provide a comprehensive
explanation of a problem by displaying the opinions that support it carefully.

While the main purpose of analytical exposition text is, “to try/attempt to influence the reader to believe something
by presenting one side of the argument.” It means trying to convince the reader to believe something by giving
one side of opinion only. ”

Referring to the purpose of analytical exposition, this does not mean that analytical exposition text contains only
one argument, but contains various arguments that have the same purpose.

In school books in Indonesia often mentioned, Analytical exposition text is a text that elaborates the writer’s idea
about the phenomenon surrounding. It means analytical exposition text is a text that contains an idea about the
phenomenon surrounding. Of course it is also followed by some argument to support it.

Generic Structure of Analytical exposition Text

Every text must have generic structure which is different with another text. Analytical Exposition Text also has
generic structure, those are :
# Thesis: it contains writer’s opinion about something. It also introduces topics and indicates the writer’s position
# Argument : it contains the argument to support the writer’s position. The number of arguments may vary, but
each argument must be supported by evidence and explanation.
# Reiteration: Restating the writer’s point of view / to strengthen the thesis. We can use the following phrase to
make conclusion in reiteration :
– From the fact above …
– I personally believe …
– Therefore, my conclusion is …
– In conclusion …

Purpose of Analytical Exposition Text

– To analyze the topic and to convince or influence the reader that this opinion is correct and supported by
arguments
– To convince the reader that the topics presented was an important topic to be discussed or gained attention by
way of providing arguments or opinions that support the main idea or topic
Language Feature of Analytical exposition Text:

# Using Simple Present Tense

# Use word that link argument, such as firstly, secondly, in addition, furthermore
# It contains these phrases :

Garbage Service need Improvement

There have been many complaints recently about the ABC garbage collection service. The official department
has agreed that the service needs improvement. But nothing has been done!
In some streets the garbage is collected only once a month because the workmen are not supervised. In other
streets, collection in more frequent but half of the garbage is left in the road. The workmen are too lazy to pick it
up and put it in the trucks.
In some parts of the colony, house-holders are dumping their garbage on the waste land. This is dangerous and
an unhealthy to do. These `dumps’ may catch fire and they will certainly attract rats and flies.
It is the duty of the official department to collect all the garbage efficiently and regularly.
The Importance of Library
I personally believe that libraries are among humanity’s most important institutions for several reasons.
Firstly, most of humanity’s collective knowledge is stored in libraries. Secondly, libraries protect and preserve this
knowledge. They also classify or group the materials into logical and easily available divisions.
Furthermore, libraries make the materials available to everyone and even provide librarians to help us find what
we need.
Finally, libraries are our link to the past and our gift to the future.
From the facts above, I conclude that libraries are important institutions for humanity.
Design of Electronic Device need Improvement

participate in the electronic age.

The barriers include the physical design of facilities, the cost of internet access and the design of interactive
voice-response systems. The Human rights and Equal Opportunity Commission’s report on electronic commerce
said that technology’s great potential for increasing access was not being realized.
The design of ‘advanced’ ATMs had made them harder for blind people to use, compared with earlier models.
Machines that once had buttons now relied on screen displays, for instance. The commission also suggested that
students with disabilities needed particular attention when educational material was provided in electronic form.
We emphasized that the designs of electronic facilities need improvement.

Building Strong Relationship

Since building Indonesian nation in 1945, Indonesia shared a positive and friendly relationship with Australia.
In 1947 Australia supported Indonesia’s struggle for independence by placing embargos on Dutch supplies, arms
and troops. Australian dock workers went on strike and significant numbers of Australians demonstrated in the
streets in support of Indonesian independence. The Dutch were unable to ship supplies through Australian ports
during this period.
Much of the support Australians gave to Indonesians was based on the friendship that developed between
Australian soldiers and the Indonesia people at the end of the Second World War. There was also a strong anti-
imperialist mood among some sections of the Australian population at that time.
It is significant for Indonesia and Asian neighbors to strengthen the relationship.
Those are the short examples of analytical exposition text. Hopefully this list of analytical exposition make you
find easier way to understand the text.

I think enough my explanation about Analytical Exposition Text. I hope it will be useful for us. And I hope you are

EXAMPLE OF ANALYTICAL EXPOSITION TEXT (ABOUT MENTALLY ILL PERSON)

Mentally Ill Person Wander Around Freely On The Street

I personally think that a person with a mental illness that we usually find wandering around our neighborhood aimlessly is

not dangerous, but a serious act need to be done on this matter. The following reasons will show you why we need to do

something to insane people.

Firstly, people with mental illness who walk around our neighborhood or workplace may look scary beause most of the time

they are found in dirty condition and in zombie-like state (having no consciousness), but they rarely endanger the people

around them, except they were disturbed first. Placing them in a secure place will minimize the chance of them being

disturbed by irresponsible people compare to when we let them wander around on the street freely.

Secondly, loosing their conscious mind does not mean that they have forgotten their basic instinct for food, drinks and self

preservation. We can imagine what will happen when they feel hungry or thirsty when they are roaming around on the street.

They will cause trouble to the people around them. Keeping them in a special place will prevent this problem. It will bring

security for the insane people and also for the society.

Thirdly, people with mental illness may not have a healthy mind, but they do have a healthy body or at least healthy body

parts. Without anyone caring, they are the best target of human trafficking business as no one will notice if they are

disappear. That is why we need to protect them by placing them in a secure facility where we can always check on their

condition and make sure that they are safe.

Based on the explanations above, it is clear that we need to protect the people with mental illness by placing them in a

special and secure facility where we can take care of them and cure them if it is possible.

Global Warming

Everybody should change their way of life to reduce global warming. There are several things that we can do. One of them is
by buying and consuming fresh local groceries as much as possible. It of course includes local vegetables, fruits, bread, etc.
Local groceries don’t need much transportation to get it into the market. It of course means, the amount of carbon dioxide
produced is less than the groceries from other region. Therefore, by buying local groceries we are helping reduce the amount
of carbon dioxide produced.
Consuming fresh groceries instead of frozen ones are healthier for us. Furthermore, fresh food or groceries means no
requirements for it to be freeze up. It means that no electricity is needed and saving energy means reducing carbon dioxide
and money.
So, from now on we should consume fresh local groceries to reduce global warming.

HOUSE HUSBAND’S HEART RISK

Most people assume that life in the rat race is bad for your health. But reversing the traditional gender roles,
being a house husband is a stressful business, according to the latest research by American scientist. By giving
up their jobs in order to become house husbands, men increase their risk of heart attack or coronary disease by
as much as 82%, according to research based on 10 year study of 2,500 people in Boston, USA.
Accoding to Dr. Elaine Eaker, the key to the problem is that some men became stressed about performing a role
not traditionally assigm to them by society. Men who stays at home tend not to have the same levels of support
from friends and family as women do the same.
Jack O’Sullivan, of the Father’s Direct, was quoted as saying: “Society expects the main career should be a
woman and society is structured around that. Day care is called mother and toddler groups and some men feel
awkward about belonging to those groups.
Professor Gary Cooper, a psychologist at the University of Manchester, said many men tend to underestimate
the task of caring for a family. He said “Most men think being a house husband involves putting on a bit of
washing, taking the kids to school and then putting their feet up with a cup of coffee.
They are crazy. Most men are not used to performing a variety of activities simultanously – the kind of multi-
tasking which is second nature to most women.
It is estimated that men have taken over the main homemaker’s role in one in seven homes, as increasing
numbers of women become the main breadwinner. The study also found that women in high-powered jobs were
more likely to develop heart disease than those in more junior positions.

Learning English
July 5, 2008

Learning English through music and songs can be very enjoyable. You can mix pleasure with learning when you
listen to a song and exploit the song as a means to your English progress. Some underlying reason can be drawn
to support the idea why we use songs in language learning.

Firstly, “the song stuck in my head” Phenomenon (the echoing in our minds of the last song we heard after
leaving a restaurant, shopping malls, etc) can be both enjoyable and sometimes unnerving. This phenomenon
also seems to reinforce the idea that songs work on our short-and-long term memory.

Secondly, songs in general also use simple conversational language, with a lot of repetition, which is just what
many learners look for sample text. The fact that they are effective makes them many times more motivating than
other text. Although usually simple, some songs can be quite complex syntactically, lexically and poetically, and
can be analyzed in the same way as any other literary sample.

Furthermore, song can be appropriated by listener for their own purpose. Most pop songs and probably many
other types don’t have precise people, place or time reference.

In addition, songs are relaxing. They provide variety and fun, and encourage harmony within oneself and within
one group. Little wonder they are important tools in sustaining culture, religion, patriotism and yeas, even
revolution.

Last but not least, there are many learning activities we can do with songs such as studying grammar, practicing
selective listening comprehension, translating songs, learning vocabulary, spelling and culture.

From the elaboration above, it can be concluded that learning through music and songs, learning English can be
enjoyable and fun.

Smoking in Restaurant
July 5, 2008

Smoking in restaurants is just not on. It must not be allowed because it is rude, harmful to others and dangerous
for the smokers.

Firstly, smoking in a restaurant is impolite. The smell of the smoke affects all people and can turn them off their
food. People pay to taste good food and not to be put off by foul smelling smoke.

Another reason smoking should not be allowed in restaurant is the harm it can do to others. Passive smoking that
is breathing in smoke made by a smoker can lead to asthma attacks and even cancer.

Finally, smoking is dangerous and a health risk to the smokers. Cigarettes cause heart and lung disease and
people should not smoke anywhere, not just in restaurants.

Therefore, smoking in restaurants is impolite, harmful to others and a health risk to the smokers and should not
be allowed in any restaurants.

Dust Bin
July 5, 2008

To improve comfort and cleanliness at our school, a number of dust bins should be increased.

When we look at classrooms, school corridors and school yard, there are paper mineral water cups, straws, and
napkins here and there. The condition of uncleanliness and discomfort really hinders learning and teaching
environment. Litters thrown carelessly cause disease, especially empty plastic cup or glasses. They can be filled
out with water coming from the rain. This can be placed for dengue mosquitoes to spread out. Besides, these
rubbish can deteriorate the scene. Well painted wall and green school yard do not mean anything litters are
scattered everywhere.

Anyway I notice that most of the students in our school have responsibilities for the school environment. They put
their litters on the proper places. But some are not diligent enough to find the dust bins. The numbers of dust
binds in our schools are not enough. Ore dust bins should be put beside each of steps, outside of the
classrooms, and some more also the corridors. Probably one dust bin should be in every ten meters. So when
students want to throw away their litters, they can find the dust bins easily.

When school is equipped with sufficient dust bins, we do not have problems of freak and discomfort any more.
Our school will be very clean and become a nice place to study.

Integrated Pest Management

There is no best way to deal with pests in agriculture. Pesticides which are commonly used may cause many problems. I
think combining different management operations is the most effective way to control pests.
Firstly, the chemicals in the pesticides may build up as residues in the environment and in the soil which absorbs the
chemicals. This reduces the quality of farm product.
Secondly, pests can gradually become resistant to pesticides. This means that newer and stronger ones have to be developed.
Lastly, some pesticides affect non target plants and animals such as fish and bees. This affects the ecology and environment
as well.
So, understanding of ecology of an area helps a lot in pest control. Pesticides should be chosen and applied carefully so that
they don't affect the ecological balance and environment.
Therefore, integrated pest management is a safe and more effective option to fight pest in agriculture and livestock.
