Alter, Jonathan, et al. I Am Jane Doe. Performance by Jessica Chastain, and John McCain, 2017.

The Netflix Documentary, I Am Jane Doe, produced by Jonathan Alter was

brought to viewers in 2017 and has a powerful story that explains the disturbing

use of a website for sex trafficking. The movie has three different stories from

girls who were victims by the website, Backpage.com, and they touch on their

experiences. The documentary shows the girls and parents in present time and

they reflect on the memories. The parents as well as the girls start to seek justice

and fight back for what they had to go through. The girls file lawsuits against

Backpage.com and they fail to succeed. During the lawsuit, a specific law that

has been active for a long time protects Backpage.com because it allows for

websites to hosts ads, that within, host human trafficking. The movie reveals the

truth to a major legal issue in the United States that is current problem. Although

the movie came out a few years ago, it is extremely relevant today. The

information in the movie is extremely credible because the girls are describing

their experience first-hand. This article will be important in my research paper

because it gives information about a major lawsuit and provides other

information about the experience of human trafficking and allows for a better

grasp on a topic that is hard to understand.

De la Garza, Paul. "The Evil 'Underbelly of Globalization': Human Trafficking." St. Petersburg

Times [St. Petersburg, FL], 20 Mar. 2001, p. 2A. Opposing Viewpoints in

Context, http://link.galegroup.com/apps/doc/A72229585/OVIC?u=dayt30401&sid=OVIC

&xid=81024e6b. Accessed 7 July 2019.

The article, “The Evil ‘Underbelly of Globalization’: Human Trafficking”, by Paul

De la Garza has bits of an interview of a victim and explains the stories and what

happens with other victims. The article focuses on victims in Europe rather than

the United States. This is important because many women and children are told

they will have a job when they are outsourcing, but the job like babysitting or

waitressing turns out to be the opposite of what they believe it will be. The

problem with this article is that it is a little dated, from 2001, but the information

it provides is important to explain the range of trafficking that occurs throughout

the world.

Gorham, Damon. “Policy & Legislation.” Polaris, Charity Navigator, 21 Dec. 2017,

polarisproject.org/policy-legislation. Accessed 7 July 2019.

The website and foundation, Polaris, has many different tabs that are extremely

relevant to my research. The main point of the organization is to help people get

a better understanding of what human trafficking is and can donate to help

victims. The website has a section that explains the myths of human trafficking

and goes on to tell the truth to the statement. The way that the information is

presented is easier than a long article and provides the same information. The

goal for the organization is to fight to end modern slavery as in human

trafficking. The website also provides information to the successes that they

have had from starting the organization. There are many statistics that are good

to support my claims and help to answer my question of how globalization has

increased human trafficking. This source is relevant and was created two years

ago but is constantly being updated with new stories from victims and other

news related to the topic.

Hall, Andrew. “The Uniform Act on Prevention of and Remedies for Human Trafficking.” Arizona

Law Review, vol. 56, no. 3, Sept. 2014, pp. 853–896. EBSCOhost, Accessed 7 July 2019.

The article, “The Uniform Act on Prevention of and Remedies for Human

Trafficking”, by Andrew Hall explains the different policies and legislation there

has been passed for prevention of human trafficking. The article suggests that

the reforms are there to be used, but it is up to the states to adopt the laws and

protect their rights to freedom. The article is written for any person willing to

learn about the different legislation there is on human trafficking. The article was

written in 2014, so there have been new laws that have been passed, but the

overall explanation of different laws is important to my research. The article also

describes other ways to prevent human trafficking, which is not only important
to the research, but for everyday life. This will help me come full circle on my

topic and explain how certain laws prevent globalization from being a breeding

ground for human trafficking and enslavement.

Jägers, Nicola, and Conny Rijken. “Prevention of Human Trafficking for Labor Exploitation: The

Role of Corporations.” Journal of International Human Rights, vol. 12, no. 1, Winter

2014, pp. 47–73. EBSCOhost, Accessed 7 July 2019.

The article, “Prevention of Human Trafficking for Labor Exploitation: The Role of

Corporations”, written in 2014 by Nicola Jägers and Conny Rijken is an

informative piece that explains the trafficking that occurs in Asian and European

countries. This article focuses more on the labor trafficking and exploitation

rather than sex trafficking. This is highly useful to my research because my main

question I am answering is about human trafficking, not just sex trafficking.

There are conventions that help to combat human trafficking by discussing a

“three-P paradigm”, essentially prosecution and prevention of trafficking of

human beings, as well as protection of victims. The article explains the three P’s

and goes into how the different corporations have responsibilities with

prevention and respect. The article is written for any person interested in

learning more about the different ways to help end and decrease human

trafficking. The statistics and information will be very helpful in supporting my

research question since it talks about globalization and migration laws involved

with trafficking of human beings.

Jones, Loring, et al. "Globalization and Human Trafficking." Journal of Sociology & Social

Welfare, vol. 34, no. 2, 2007, p. 107+. Opposing Viewpoints in

Context, http://link.galegroup.com/apps/doc/A164557865/OVIC?u=dayt30401&sid=OVI

C&xid=e2857462. Accessed 7 July 2019.

This journal, “Globalization and Human Trafficking”, written in 2004 by Loring

Jones is straight forward by means of the title in terms of the main idea of the

journal. The passage acknowledges how globalization has increased flow of

goods and services, including labor throughout the world. The article focuses on

the immigrants that are considered to be outsiders and make them more

vulnerable to labor exploitation and human trafficking. The article focuses on

why people migrate and get involved and trapped in trafficking. This is important

in my research because I am focusing on how globalization has increased the

amount of trafficked victims there are in today’s world. The article suggests that

in order to defeat trafficking, people have to understand what it is and the

multiple factors to it. This is written for the common good trying to understand

the concept at hand, and learning ways to help deal with the issue. Although the

journal is fifteen years old, it has relevant information and the ways to cope and

watch out for trafficked human beings is even more of a current issue.
Sen, Nandini C. “Gender, Migration and Human Trafficking: The Untold Story of the Gurgaon

Maids’ Migration from the Sunderbans.” Oriental Anthropologists, vol. 15, no. 2, July

2015, pp. 301–314. EBSCOhost, Accessed 7 July 2019.

The article, “Gender, Migration and Human Trafficking: The Untold Story of the

Gurgaon Maids’ Migration from the Sunderbans” by Nandini C. Sen was written

in 2015 and tells the story of women that were trafficked in India with intentions

to earn money to provide for their families. The article focuses on three women

and interviews them with their experience. The three women worked in the

most upscale part of the Delhi region. The paper explains the migration of many

workers that were seeking for work to help provide for their lives. The article

justifies why the refugees moved to different cities. This article exposes the

readers to the reality of what some women and children experience in other

countries, as well as the United States. Although the stories are not all physically

abusive, they are disturbing and traumatic memories that shape their lives

forever. This is important in proving credibility to my research, the stories of

first-hand experience help to support claims.
