GLOBAL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

QUESTION 1:
A. Five Trade Models, explain each.
B. Identify w/c model best suit for the Philippines

ANSWER:
A. Five Trade Models:

1. Adam Smith’s Model

-This is also known as the Absolute Advantage Theory wherein it discusses the ability of a person
or a country to produce a particular good at a lower absolute cost than another.

2. Ricardian Model
-This is also known as the theory of comparative advantage wherein it explains how trade can
create value for both parties even when one can produce all goods with fewer resources than
the other.

3. Heckscher-Ohlin Model
-This is a type of a non-classical trade theory where it considers a country’s production factors
such as land, labor, and capital, which provide the funds for investment in plants and equipment.
This determined that the cost of any factor or resource was a function of supply and demand.

4. Product Cycle Theory

- This theory suggests that early in a product's life-cycle all the parts and labor associated with
that product come from the area where it was invented. After the product becomes adopted and
used in the world markets, production gradually moves away from the point of origin. In some
situations, the product becomes an item that is imported by its original country of invention.

5. Porter’s Competitive Advantage Theory (Diamond Model)

- This is designed to understand the competitive advantage nations or groups possess due to
certain factors available to them, and to explain how governments can act as catalysts to
improve a country's position in a globally competitive economic environment.

B. The Porter’s Diamond model gives an advantage in the Philippines in terms of globalization
because it illustrates four interrelated determinants that Porter theorizes as the deciding factors
of national comparative economic advantage. This comprises of policies to enhance a country`s
position in the factors of production relevant to the industry, policies that raise the quality of
domestic demand necessary for constant upgrading, policies to ensure the presence of
supporting and related industries, and policies to influence competitive behavior through firm
strategy, structure, and rivalry. Through this, it helps understand the competitive advantage
nations or groups possess due to certain factors available to them, and to explain how
governments can act as catalysts to improve a country's position in a globally competitive
economic environment.
Applying this model in the Philippines, this will help focus on improving the business climate,
promoting an environment that increases productivity and innovative capacity, enforcing
regulations that enhance consumer welfare and finally, expanding market access

QUESTION 2:
A. Discuss: Relationship between International Relations and Global relations
B. Illustrate how it can help our country amidst stiff global competitiveness, peace and order
situation and corruption pattern in government bureaus and departments

ANSWER:
A. International relations or affairs is commonly referred to as international studies, global studies
and is a study of the interconnections of politics, economics and a law in a global level.
International relations attempts to explain the interactions of states in the global interstate
system, and it also attempts to explain the interactions of others whose behavior originates
within one country and is targeted toward members of other countries.
B. International relations may be an offshoot of political science. As our global society evolves and
expands, international relations will evolve and expand along with it as we continue to explore
new and exciting way to link our complex world.
For example, traditional dimensions of international relations related to international peace and
prosperity include factors such as international diplomacy, arms control, and alliance politics.

ETHICAL VALUES IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

1.
2. “Doing the right thing” is a key motivator but it’s often hard to figure out what the “right thing”
is: what’s “right” for one group of stakeholders isn’t necessarily just as “right” for another. One
thing, however, is certain: companies today are held to higher standards than ever before.
Consumers and other groups consider not only the quality and price of a company’s products
but also its character.
No, a business enterprise should only not focus on a profit-based enterprise but needs to
consider the betterment of its clients and customers. Social responsiveness of an enterprise shall
establishes a consistent and collective process to manage the legal, regulatory, compliance and
ethical challenges of our ever-changing and highly regulated industry.
Social Responsiveness is an investment that can help build a reputation as a responsible
business, which can, in turn, lead to competitive advantage. Companies often favour suppliers
who have responsible policies, since this can reflect on how their customers see them. Some
customers don't just prefer to deal with responsible companies - they insist on it.

MANAGERIAL PROBLEMS

A. The Peter Principle is a concept in management, which observes that people in a hierarchy tend
to rise to their "level of incompetence". In other words, an employee is promoted based on their
success in previous jobs until they reach a level at which they are no longer competent, as skills
in one job do not necessarily translate to another.
This is not new to both the government and private organizations in the Philippines, sometimes
it already becomes a practice to some.
In order to overcome this type of principle, an employee must be an intuitive thinker wherein
requires pushback from the many distractions to tap into a new level of flow. Once inside this
level of flow, it allows for new dimensions of thought, operating in an unconsciously competent
manner.

B.
1. “Don’t take it personally”
- Ask yourself what part of this criticism is useful? Filter out the things that are
actionable and repeatable from what can often be a lot of subjective opinion. This is
where you listen and say "okay, that makes sense," or "I can come up with a plan to do
that." Keep what's applicable to what you do and filter out the rest. Remember, haters
gonna hate, but even they sometimes hate for reasons worth considering.
2. “Take a distinction between feedback and insult”
- Criticism typically involves making negative assumptions about (or "mind-reading") the
other person's motives. Feedback, however, generally avoids speculating on the other
person's intent, focusing instead on the actual results of their behavior. If the person
giving feedback shares their impression about the other's motives, it's clearly stated as
such.
3. “Know that criticism comes with territory”
- The privilege of adding a byline to a story or a commentary comes with a responsibility
and vulnerability that means to accept criticism that results from the actions or even
statements of fact that others see.
