CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

This study is all about the perception of the students of Natatas National High

School in the importance of being punctual and passing projects in the School year 2017-2018.

The research will point out the effects of being punctual in School and passing projects on time

not just on the academic performance of the students but also its effects on their future.

Most students start out each new semester of School with High expectations.

They envision themselves being successful in their studies and School work but they fail to put

together a realistic plan, or establish a routine, that will enable them to achieve academic success.

There are only so many hours in a day, days in a week, and weeks in a term.

And if you don't pay attention, the end of the semester will arrive before you

know it – catching you by surprise. To achieve academic success, you must carefully manage

your study time on a daily, weekly, and semester basis. The following is a time management

strategy for doing exactly that.

Tardiness affects not only your child‟s attendance record and ability to learn, but it

also impacts the School environment and you. Being late to School can lead to legal problems

for you and your child, and it also interrupts other students‟ learning.

2
Tardiness also adds up to absences in many Schools. For example, at certain schools

three incidents of tardiness equal one absence. Preparing the night before and allowing a little

extra time in the morning can prevent most tardiness.

It is known that punctuality Is one of the most important traits a student need to have

in order to perform well on School. Punctual students have a better chance of attaining High

grades since they don‟t miss out classes and lessons unlike the latecomers that are prone to

having low and failing grades.

This research will give emphasis on how students perceive the thought of being late

or arriving late to School, how they feel after being late and the actions they try to take to avoid

being late to School.

Furthermore, the factors that affect the punctuality of students will be discussed and

how these factors affect the punctuality of students.

Countermeasures and disciplinary actions will be included in this research in order

to figure out a feasible and sustainable solution to address the student‟s problems on coming late

to class.

When students come to class late, it can disrupt the flow of a lecture or discussion,

distract other students, impede learning, and generally erode class morale. Moreover, if left

unchecked, lateness can become chronic and spread throughout the class.

Because there are a number of possible reasons students arrive to class late,

considering which causes are at the root of the problem can help guide instructors to appropriate

responses and strategies. Understanding the reasons, however, does not require tolerating the

behavior.

3
Lateness is the act of coming, arriving or remaining after due, usual, or proper time.

Lateness according to the School context is where by students arrive or come to School late

which goes contrarily against the Schools‟ rules.

There are number of reasons that account to the lateness of children to class. Some of

them are the reasons are as follows:

Improper time management: students may postpone their assignments and home works

late in the night, others even do those tasks in the morning before coming to class, others also

play computer games and cartoons, interacting on the social media, as a results they sleep very

late I the night so they cannot wake up early to prepare to School.

stated in their book “lateness” that School administrators must lead by example. They

should be punctual in their own meetings and classes to avoid students to think that being late is

just alright since even authoritative persons are doing it.“causes of the lateness among the

secondary students”, going late to bed because of watching films and homes movies resulting

into waking up late in the morning.

Some students also come to class late due to delay of their transports. Students who

have contracts with drivers may be delayed to School due to improper schedule of the driver,

others who come on their own but learning on a very far distance may find it difficult to get

transport or car on time to School which made them late to class.

According to (CAESC 2007 and Zeiger 2010) the most essential learning time of the

day for the students lies in the morning.

4
The High and persistence traffic jams on our road. Most of our roads especially in big

towns and cities are always cluster with traffic jams which delay students to get to class in time.

Bad nature of some roads and route to some Schools: Most of the roads leading to

various Schools are in deplorable conditions, pot holes and have taken the center stage, so cars

taking student to these Schools in the rural areas delays on the road, most of the roads are also

not tarred so it makes drivers faces challenges in driving smoothly to convey students to School

on time.

Objectives of the study

Review of related literature

This part of the research will feature the reason why students come late to School and its

effect.

This research will also include the disciplinary measures being used by different

Schools to convince students to not come late to School as a habit.

Furthermore, the effects of proper time management to help avoid being late will be

featured.

Being late is known to be arriving or doing something after the expected/allotted time.

Showing up on time to High School each day benefits student‟s academic, performance and

future professional habits.

Students who arrive at School early have an advantage over classmates who stumble

through the door after class has begun.

Students who come early to School have the luxury of settling in and preparing for the

first period class and has more transition period to literally wake up from an sleepy bus ride or

walk to School compared to those who show up in the middle of the class.

Furthermore, being punctual can develop lifelong habits that can greatly affect their

future such as their work ethics, and employment opportunities. On the other hand, students who

come late to class may turn out to believe that tardiness is an acceptable behavior that can

negatively affect their future.

8
Also, students who comes late to class can miss out not just the introduction but also

some important information, essays, School trips, and due dates that teachers usually shares

while, waiting for the bell to ring.(Reynolds, 2016)

Teachers can also become frustrated due to the interruption of instructions and lessons

due to students who arrive in the middle of the class.

This often requires re-teaching of what the latecomers missed and can affect the overall

environment of the whole class. (Young and Densley,2011)

Being on time to School is also a preparation for the real world. Students who always

shows up on time learns to show up to their work, meetings and other businesses on time

compared to those who shows up late to School that brings their tardy behavior to their work

affecting their future and job opportunities. It is also emphasized that tardiness at School doesn‟t

help students to get ready for the world after graduation. (Leslie Ford, 2011)

A US based study entitled “School wide intervention to reduce chronic tardiness at the

middle and High School levels” found out that a massive amount of teaching time are lost due to

tardiness and students showing up in the middle of the lesson affecting the overall capabilities of

the whole classroom population.

The study suggest that counter reactive measures should be implemented in order to

ensure that current guidelines and consequences are being implemented and are effective to

combat student tardiness.

9
The study also shows that student‟s own behavior is the largest contributor to time

management and punctuality problem among students.

Moreover, time management and punctuality problems tend to have negative impact on

student‟s academic achievement.

The study suggests that in order to overcome these problem, School administration,

teachers and parents would play an important role especially as most these problems have been

occurred in School and house hold settings.

Overall, the study concludes that time management and punctuality problems among students

has negative impact in the process of student‟s learn Student‟s time management and punctuality

problems are also related to parent‟s attitudes towards the issues Lateness is the act of coming,

they sleep very late I the night so they cannot wake up early to prepare to School. (Nakpodia

and afiaghor 2011).

The researchers found that students who are frequently late to School often miss

out on important opening announcements and academic activities.„Teachers can become

frustrated as late students disrupt instruction, often requiring re-teaching of what they have

missed. Tardy behavior can also negatively affect the overall classroom environment,‟ the

study says.

Arriving late to School can also mean that students miss out on activities

designed to build connections with their peers, potentially impacting their social interactions

and creating a greater sense of alienation from their classmates. (Densley 2011)

11
Most students start out each new semester of School with High expectations.

They envision themselves being successful in their studies and School work but they fail to put

together a realistic plan, or establish a routine, that will enable them to achieve academic

success. There are only so many hours in a day, days in a week, and weeks in a term. And if

you don't pay attention, the end of the semester will arrive before you know it – catching you

by surprise. To achieve academic success, you must carefully manage your study time on a

daily, weekly, and semester basis. The following is a time management strategy for doing

exactly that. Disrupted Routines One of the most important aspects of School is that it is

organized, scheduled and predictable. Students depend on the structure of the day. They know

where they have to be and when. They know the main purpose for being in School is to learn

and that routines are in place precisely to help them focus on that learning. When students are

repeatedly tardy, these routines are disrupted. Children who are often late have trouble settling

in and mastering routines. Tardiness can throw off their whole morning or even their day,

especially if the late commute to School was stressful.

Social Criticism The social experience has a powerful impact on a child's feelings

about School and his or her ability to be academically successful. When a child continuously

shows up late to class, other students are distracted. Attention is drawn away from the teacher

or assignment and toward the child who has just arrived. Over time, classmates may begin to

criticize this child, affecting how they feel about themselves in School. During adolescence,

children are especially conscious of fitting in and being accepted by peers. If your child is

repeatedly tardy, they may become a target or outcast over time, and negative peer interactions

can hurt their ability to concentrate on learning. According to the Encyclopedia of Children's

12
Health, children with steady friendships throughout the School year enjoy School more, and

children who can make new friends tend to perform better academically.

Low Achievement Perform Well, a nonprofit policy research and educational

organization, reports that frequent tardiness is associated with lower grades and lower scores

on standardized tests. It is also linked to low graduation rates. In addition, students who are

routinely late at the primary and middle School levels are more likely to fail in senior School

or even drop out. In many classrooms, particularly at the primary level, morning routines are

critical to daily lessons. Warm-up activities may introduce topics that will be learned later in

the day, or review work offers students an opportunity to review previously learned skills.

Responsibility

Part of your child's education is learning to be responsible. The School experience

teaches children how to meet expectations. They learn to follow schedules, obey rules,

complete assignments and keep track of their materials. Learning responsibility in School is a

precursor to functioning in the working world, as noted by (William Kirby in his 2010) article

"School Attendance Tied to Academic Success”.

Attendance is one of the ways children show they can meet their obligations. In many

cases, a child's attendance depends on his parents' ability to help him be on time. Parents can

teach their children organizational techniques that will help them get out of the house faster,

such as packing their bags and laying out their clothes the night before School. But parents

who drive their children must also remember to be punctual and responsible. After all, you are

the primary role model.

13
One of the key housekeeping and classroom management tasks that teachers face is attendance

and how to deal with tardiness. While many students will be tardy at some point during the year,

tardiness can quickly become a real problem if an effective tardy policy is not in place. Students

need to understand the importance of being on time, not only in School but in their future life. As

a teacher, it is often very helpful to have numerous ways to deal with individual issues. Finding

what works best for each individual or group of students is part of managing a class effectively.

Following is a list of five ideas that you can use as you deal with tardy students in your

class.(Kelly, 2016)

Make the Beginning of Class Important

Students need to understand that coming into class late can have consequences on their grade.

Using items like Warm Ups and On Time Quizzes can have a huge impact. You control when

class starts and how it begins. Make sure that you are prepared to begin class right on time. You

can take care of attendance and other housekeeping tasks after the students are busy working.

Students quickly get used to a routine if you are consistent in its use. Therefore, decide what

method you wish to you use and get started right away.

Use Consistent Consequences

Students will respect you and your rules more if you apply them consistently. If you have created

a policy that includes specific disciplinary actions for tardiness, these should be followed at all

times. In addition, if you have decided to use daily warm-ups that add up to a test grade, make

sure to have them posted every day and grade them appropriately. If you students see you as

14
playing favorites or making exceptions for reasons that do not seem fair, they will be less likely

to follow your rules without complaint.

Use Detentions

Detentions could be added to your classroom management plan. However, they require

commitment on your part. You have to stay in your classroom during the detention time when

you might have tasks you need to take care of at the media center or front office. Some teachers

work together and hold a joint detention to help alleviate this issue. Student transportation can

also cause headaches. Teachers who use this typically send a letter home explaining that if

students earn detention then the parents are responsible for picking up students late. Despite

these issues, detention can be effective as a deterrent for chronic tardiness.

Use a Reward System

Provide students with rewards for not being tardy to your class. This can be as simple as giving

extra hints before exams or warnings of pop quizzes during the first few minutes of class.

However, it can also expand to more tangible rewards such as homework passes. The benefit of

this is that students who are following the rewarded, hopefully reinforcing their positive

behaviors.

Help Form and Follow School-wide Policies

Many Schools already have tardy policies in place, even if these are not consistently enforced.

Make sure that you have gone through the School handbook and discussed tardy issues with

mentor teachers and administrators so that you understand what the policy is. School wide

15
policies can be extremely effective if the majority of teachers enforce them. However, if the

policy is not working, maybe you can get involved in trying to fix it. If the issue is a lack of

teacher buy-in, become an advocate for enforcement and help come up with a plan to get more

teachers involved. If the problem is the policy itself, see if your administration is amenable to

you working with teachers and administrators to come up with something that will work.

Several studies have shown that School tardiness has a negative impact on learning outcomes.

By the mere nature of arriving late and missing School hours, students receive fewer hours of

instruction than students who are in class when the bell sounds.

But not only does a student who is consistently arriving late to School establish bad punctuality

habits, their tardiness also disrupts the learning of other students in their classes.

A study by Hammill Institute on Disabilities (Caldarella, Christensen, Young & Densley,

2011), looked at decreasing tardiness in primary School-aged students using teacher-written

praise notes.

The researchers found that students who are frequently late to School often miss out on

important opening announcements and academic activities.

„Teachers can become frustrated as late students disrupt instruction, often requiring re-teaching

of what they have missed. Tardy behavior can also negatively affect the overall classroom

environment,‟ the study says.

16
Arriving late to School can also mean that students miss out on activities designed to build

connections with their peers, potentially impacting their social interactions and creating a

greater sense of alienation from their classmates.

Punishment or positive reinforcement?

So, how can teachers tackle the issue? The report suggests it is generally not helpful for

teachers to punish late students once they get to class, because it could potentially aggravate

the situation.

„There appears to be a lack of empirical evidence that punishment for tardiness yields any

positive results,‟ the study says.

Instead, the authors suggest using praise as a specific positive reinforcement strategy, as it has

proved to be effective for addressing problem behavior.

„Praise has been recognized as perhaps the easiest modification teachers can make to address

students‟ problem behaviors,‟ the study notes.

When implementing this strategy, the authors point out that there are several things to

consider. Firstly, they suggest using recent School data to identify which students show a

consistent pattern of being late. „For example, it makes little sense to intervene with a student

who had a pattern of tardiness at the beginning of the School year but is currently tardy only

occasionally.‟

They also note that young students often rely on an adult to get them to School on time, and

teachers should be cautious of the fact that the students‟ tardiness may be a result of parent

17
behavior rather than student behavior. „In such cases, intervention may need to be directed

more to the parents,‟ the study says.

A School wide plan

At a secondary School level, chronic tardiness can significantly reduce the minutes of

instruction for all students enrolled in the class, not just the tardy student.

A US study titled School wide intervention to reduce chronic tardiness at the middle and High

School levels found that „instructional time lost to widespread tardiness is likely to

significantly affect the capacity of the entire student population to meet rigorous academic

standards‟.

The research suggests that a system-level intervention is required to combat student tardiness,

to ensure guidelines are current and consequences for tardy behavior is implemented and

effective.

The report recommends a preventative School wide plan include the following:

 active supervision of students in common areas during all transition periods

 clear definition and explicit teaching of expectations for behavior during transition periods

 immediate and consistent consequences for tardiness

 Data-based decision making with respect to intervention planning and monitoring of

outcomes (Tyre, Feuerborn & Pierce 2011).

The impact on other students

18
In his 2014 academic paper – The achievement effects of tardy classmates: Evidence in urban

elementary Schools – Michael Gottfried explores the impact of tardy students‟ behavior on

their peers.

Gottfried acknowledges that if teachers respond to the educational needs of late students by

reallocating regular class time, then other students are adversely affected and classroom

instruction is slowed by this disruption.

„With tardy students entering the School day at abnormal times and potentially missing a large

number of cumulative instructional hours, teachers must divert their attention away from

regular teaching time and towards remediation,‟ he says. „As such, there are negative effects on

achievement generated when one student‟s actions impede learning for other classmates.‟

factors associated with students lateness behavior.

The first one is Poor organization is. the most common reason for lateness. Students wait until

the last minute, and then do not allow themselves enough time to travel.

The second one is. Going late to bed the individual involved in watching films and home videos

may till late night, this could result in waking up late, as could be deduced from the literal

meaning of the saying “early to bed early to rise” (Nakpodia & Dafiaghor, 2011)

The third one is Family background. Third is the habit of lateness could be learned from family

members. For instance, the person who sees the father always going late to work could also

either learn the habit, thus go to lecture late also. This is supported by Peretomode

(2001) and Egbule (2004), when they elaborated the concept of nature-nature as it affects an

individual‟s habits.

19
Moreover, it could be due to lack of parental supervision, domestic violence, poverty, and

differing attitudes toward education (U.S. Department of Justice, 2001).

The fourth one is Cultural background. Different cultures have different standards concerning

lateness. However, punctuality is not really a serious matter for some cultures, compared with

how punctuality is being perceived in western cultures and developed countries (Breeze et al.,

2010).

The fifth one is College factors These include college climate issues, such as class

size and attitudes of lecturers, other students, and administrators and inflexibility in meeting the

diverse cultural and learning styles of the students. (U.S. Department of Justice, 2001). The sixth

one is Illnesses. In general, College students have poorly taking care of their health and may

exposed to variety source of mental illnesses, for instance, depression and schizophrenia

(Kuhlenschmidt and Layne, 2000).

The seventh one is there is no consequence of being late. The consequences

associated with a behavior help in determine whether or not that behavior will be repeated. If the

consequences are negative, the behavior is less likely to reoccur. This applies to coming late to

class. If instructors neglect to react to or penalize lateness, or do so inconsistently, the behavior is

likely to be continued (Eberly Center for Teaching Excellence, ECTE, n.d).

20
The eighth one is Fatigue. It is common to university students to experiences

different kind of academic stressor. As time pressure increases students may be working multiple

jobs or night shifts in addition to studying. For some, “pulling an all-nighter” is almost a rite of

passage, with attendant potential loss of alertness and interpersonal sensitivity

(American Psychiatric Association, 2001).

The ninth one is an Emotional Challenges Several psychological and emotional

conditions can undermine students‟ motivation to get to class on time.Indeed, a hallmark

symptom of conditions such as depression includes a decreased motivation to engage in normal

daily activities. In addition, prescription medications can interfere with motivation and may

disrupt sleep patterns, which may indirectly affect students‟ ability to get to class in a timely

manner (Kuhlenschmidt and Layne, 2003).And the last one is challenge the instructor‟s

authority.

In some cases, students come to class late to test the instructor or challenge his or

her authority. for example, if the instructor is timid or does not seem in command of the class or

the material. Some students may also seek to challenge the authority of particular categories of

instructors, such as instructors who are young, female, minority, or non-English speakers (ECTE,

n.d)

why. They said they were just too tired and lazy to go to school early that they end up being

late. Others said that they wake up late in the morning because they slept late the night before.

Some respondents added that they become too complacent with their early class schedule.

Additionally, from the respondents that included “preoccupied with other works” as one of

their reasons for tardiness, majority of them described these works as academic. Moreover,

boring. The study also showed that both the course and year level are not statistically

significant to the tardiness of NNHS students. The course and year level of a student are not

significant bases to predict whether a NNHS student will be more or less likely to be tardy.

A huge array of activities and projects are required when going through School.

According to the a survey done to a total of 72 out of 102 (70.59%) students of Natatas

National High School said that a balance distribution of activities, assignments, journal and

compiled portfolios are required by their respective subject teachers everyday although, 5 out

of 102 (4.9%) of the students said that journals are at the minority and is rarely required by

teachers.

SUMMARY CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

SUMMARY

This study is all about the student who passed in Natatas National High school. The

student in Natatas need to study hard to pass the grade 10, they also need to know how important

education in School Year 2017-2018. It will involve selected students from grades 7 to 10 to

know their perception in the importance of punctuality among students. Laziness affects not only

your child‟s attendance but also in their ability to learn, but it also have impacts in the School

environment and also in yourselves.

It is about late in class that can miss out not just the introduction but also some

important information, essays, school trips, and due dates that teachers usually shares while,

waiting for the bell to ring. Some student got going to school early because they must to

go to school to pass all they project then they got passed. Sometimes the student is late because

they house is to far so they need to awake early to go to school then pass they project or

assignment to be a good student.

36
It is about the awareness of student level of importance being punctual and also

about the awareness of the students of importance being punctual in passing Grade 8 have a

higher respondent to all grade level. The table represents the number distribution of students as

respondents from Natatas National High.Because many in Grade 8 they need the supplies to do

their projects or assignments.

CONCLUSION

The most common reason on why NNHS students are tardy is that they wake up

late every morning. When NNHS students are tardy and they find the subject as an influence, it

is more likely that the subject is a major subject and/or a subject inclined to science and

technology. Additionally, when NNHS students are tardy and they find the teacher as the

influence, it is more likely that the teacher is boring.

Also, when NNHS students are tardy because of works and activities, more often

that these works are related to school and academics.

Lastly, there is no correlation between the course of the NNHS students and their

tardiness. Likewise, there is no correlation between the year level of NNHS students and their

tardiness. The course and year level of a NNHS student are not enough basis to predict whether

that student will be more or less likely to be tardy.

The project was designed for a two year period in order to allow time to develop it

fully. Yet even within that time period, the enormous amount of time and energy required to

37
promote, involve, and absorb the role of the audience in this project limited the actual

completion of the project.

RECOMMENDATION

Individual has the time, technology, and funding to handle such a project alone.
