LESSON PLAN IN ENGLISH V

Lesson: Determining the Purpose of the Author or Speaker Grade Level Standards: The learner listens critically;
communicates feelings and ideas orally and in writing with
a high level of proficiency; and reads various text types
materials to serve learning needs in meeting a wide range of
life’s purposes.

Wednesday, Listening Infer the speaker’s TASK 1 PowerPoint
July 10, 2019 at Comprehension or author’s TIME TO LISTEN! Presentation
8:30 AM to 9:20 purpose (EN5LC- Begin this learning encounter by letting the pupils
AM If-2.8.3) listen to a text. Remind them to follow strictly the
standards for listening.
If possible, let them take note of the relevant
information from the text so they can be able to
answer the questions that follow.

KINDS OF ANGLES
Cross-Curricular Focus: Mathematics
Did you know that angles are measured with circles?
An angle is a slice of a circle. Look at the two rays
that are the arms of an angle. They come to a point
where their endpoints meet. You can almost see it as
a slice of pie. The whole pie, a full circle, has 360°. If
we cut the circle up into 360 equal parts, each part
would be one degree. We measure angles by how
many of those tiny parts, or degrees, fit between the
two arms of the angle.

If an angle has exactly 90° it is called a right angle.

Two perpendicular lines form a right angle. A right
angle has a perfectly square corner, like we see on a
square or a rectangle. If the angle has less than 90° it
is called an acute angle. All acute angles are smaller
than right angles. An acute angle fits inside the arms
of a right angle if you placed the angles on top of each
other. If the angle has more than 90° it is called an
obtuse angle. All obtuse angles are bigger than right
angles. A right angle could fit inside the arm of an
obtuse angle.

Did you know that even a straight line is an angle?

It’s called a straight angle. It measures 180°, exactly
half of a circle. An angle that is so large that it bends
past the straight line, but is still smaller than a full
circle, is called reflex angle. It’s fun to work with
angles!

TASK 2 PowerPoint
TIME TO THINK! Presentation
Let the pupils answer the following questions:
1. What is the paragraph all about?
2. What shape helps us measure angles?
3. What unit do we use to measure angles?
4. What kind of angles are a part of squares and
rectangles?
5. What is the difference between an acute angle and
an obtuse angle?
6. According to the paragraph, what kind of angle is
a straight line?
7. What do you think is the objective/ goal of the
author in writing the paragraph?

TASK 3 PowerPoint
TIME TO WORK OUT! Presentation
Let the pupils classify each of the following text
titles according to their possible purpose. Let Chart
them paste each title under the proper heading
of the chart posted on the board (as shown Flash Cards
below).

TASK 4
TIME TO THINK BEYOND!
 The teacher will divide the class into 6 PowerPoint
groups. Presentation
 Each group will be given a selection/ text to
read.
Printed copy of
 A member from each group must read aloud the text for each
(loud enough for the other members to group
hear) the content of the text given to their
group.
 As a team, the pupils must be able to infer
the author’s purpose in writing the text
given to them.

After 10 minutes………..
 All the members of each group will proceed
in front.
 A member from each group will read the
content of the text given to their group so
the other pupils will also have the idea
about the content of the text.
 In unison, all the members must be able to
infer and present creatively the author’s
purpose in writing the text.

For Group 1 and 4:

A dog is definitely the best pet a child could have.
Would you like to know why? Well, for one, a dog
can be trained to do tricks, which is almost
impossible with a cat because all it does is to stare at
you whenever you ask it to do something. A fish can
make an interesting pet but you can’t play with it
like you can with a dog. Besides, a dog is the most
loyal pet. A rabbit might be cute but have you ever
seen a rabbit that protects his master like a dog does?
So, if you ever plan on getting a pet, go for a dog and
you won’t regret it.

For Group 2 and 5:

Agapito Flores is a Filipino who is known for having
invented the fluorescent lamp. Born in Guiguinto,
Bulacan on September 28, 1897, Agapito Flores
belonged to a poor family and was unable to finish
his high school education. He worked at a machine
shop at an early age and later saved up enough
money to enrol himself in a vocational school where
he took up electronics. Then, he worked as an
electrician. During his vacant time, he worked on his
projects about artificial day lighting. His home
experiments led to the invention of what is today
known as the fluorescent lamp, which was named in
his honor. (Cross-Curricular Focus: Araling Panlipunan)

For Group 3 and 6:

A Lion lay asleep in the forest, his great head resting
on his paws. A timid little Mouse came upon him
unexpectedly, and in her fright and haste to get
away, ran across the Lion’s nose. Roused from his
nap, the Lion laid his huge paw angrily on the tiny
creature to kill her. “Spare me!” begged the poor
Mouse. “Please let me go and someday I will surely
repay you.” The Lion was much amused to think that
a Mouse could ever help him. But he was generous
and finally let the Mouse go. Some days later, while
stalking his prey in the forest, the Lion was caught in
the toils of a hunter’s net. Unable to free himself, he
filled the forest with his angry roaring. The Mouse
knew the voice and quickly found the Lion
struggling in the net. Running to one of the great
ropes that bound him, she gnawed it until it parted,
and soon the Lion was free. “You laughed when I said
I would repay you,” said the Mouse. “Now you see
that even a Mouse can help a Lion.”

TASK 5
TIME TO CHECK YOUR SKILLS! PowerPoint
(Formative Assessment) Presentation
Determine whether the author’s purpose for each of
the following is to PERSUADE, INFORM, or
ENTERTAIN.

1. Katas Aloe Vera shampoo will make your hair

smoother in just two weeks. It is made up from pure
Aloe Vera extracts combined with special
ingredients guaranteed to provide visible results
instantly. It is really the best option to have a great
hair day.

2. Many people around the world prefer to use the

fluorescent lamp instead of the incandescent lamp.
The main reason for this is that, light produced by
the fluorescent lamp has a brightness that can be
compared to daylight. It is so much better than the
incandescent lamp because it helps us save
electricity. What’s more is that the fluorescent lamp
does not heat as much and as fast as the
incandescent lamp. The fluorescent lamp is truly so
much better than the incandescent lamp.

3. Sam the snowman was feeling sad and lonely. But

you will never be able tell from the way he looks. For
Sam is a very proper little snowman. He always looks
smart standing by the snow-covered grass wearing
his black hat, a pretty-looking tie, and a constant
wide smile. No one knew how lonely Sam was,
except the Snow Fairy who secretly watches over
him from behind the giant clouds.

4. Diabetes is a serious disease that affects all people,

regardless of age, gender, or race. Signs and
symptoms of diabetes include being unusually
thirsty, drinking large amounts of liquids without
quenching your thirst, frequent urination, fruity
smelling urine, dry skin, and blurred vision. To
prevent diabetes, it is necessary to eat a well-
balanced diet and get plenty of exercise. It is easier to
prevent diabetes than it is to treat it once it has
developed. (Cross-Curricular Focus: Health)

5. Why do cat lick themselves? You must have seen

your pet cat lick the insides of his paw, rub it around
his nose, lick it again, and rub it around his ears,
forehead, and eyes. Once he’s done with the left and
right sides of his face, he then uses his rough tongue
to lick his legs, shoulders, tail, and the rest of his
body. Yes, cats use licking as a way to clean their
bodies. This is called grooming. Cats do these
cleaning steps for most parts of the day, every day, to
get rid of parasites; keep their coats clean, smooth,
and waterproof; and to cool down on a hot day.
