CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Muslim is a believer of Islamic Traditions, which in contrast with Catholic

schools vision, mission, and goal that specifically teach religious educations and

values regarding Christianity. Diversity can be a real threat in our society,

because humans are afraid to those kinds of things or being that is unknown or

differ from them. Literature of Muslim students and Catholics are not different

from each other, but has its own differences in terms of educational environment.

People that comes from different places usually experience bad things like

bullying, discrimination, cultural shock and many more. It is the same with our

Muslim brothers and sisters they might occasionally experiences good things and

bad thing. That is why we are conducting this research to focus on the lived

experiences of Muslim students studying in a Catholic school. This will be in

regards to their reasons on enrolling in a Catholic school. This will tackle their

positive and negative experiences while studying in a Catholic school and their

coping mechanisms in addressing those negative experiences they have

encountered.

In fact, more than 26,000 Muslim students are enrolling in Catholic

schools in England and in Wales. In BCC News, an article written by Coughlan

(2016) stated that: //an annual census of a Catholic School collected information

on the number of pupils from other religions for the first time.// In addition, the

collected data from the census stated that the biggest group of non-Catholic

pupils enrolled at Catholic schools are Muslims. Overall, more than 850,000
7
students within the Catholic school are not Catholic with a total of amount of

290,000. According to Nelis (2016), head of St. Patrick’s Catholic Voluntary

Academy in Sheffield, stated that half of the pupils enrolled are not Catholic. She

also said that there have been changes in local population and the schools are

now popular with parents who choose a Catholic school, even though they are

not Catholics.

In addition, a Catholic school runs a policy of Muslim students avoiding

themselves of wearing hijab headscarves. Which they've been wearing as their

traditional garments in Zamboanga City, but Mehol Sadain the head of National

Commission on Muslim Affairs states that, “students shouldn't be under a

pressure of what traditional garments they are wearing because they have the

rights and they only wanted to learn and be educated (Calonzo, 2012).”

Moreover, the article entitled Catholic schools to help schools in ARMM by

Antonio L. Colina IV (2017) stated that Catholic Educational Association of the

Philippines (CEAP) plans to support the teaching standards of schools in the five

provinces, two-city Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) with the

help of Catholic Institution. In ARMM, the standard of preparedness of Muslim

teachers is very low, while some schools had these experts in education. The

president of the CEAP, Joel Tabora had a press conference on Wednesday,

September 27 that they tend to craft programs primarily in order to help their

teachers improved their teaching skills towards teaching Muslim students. This is

because President Tabora wants to share their knowledge and traditions of the

Muslims and to understand the character and behavior of Christians. The

8
program is here by entitled "intercultural and interreligious dialogue" between

Christians and Muslims.

The research would only focus on the Muslim students who are studying

at the Catholic school specifically at the Saint Peters College of Toril (SPCT). The

number of participants in this study is four participants. Particularly, the junior

high school and senior high school students, in which the research tool used is

the interview method, which is all about the question and answer method

regarding to the topic that are asked by the researchers to the certain students

with the finest answer of the experienced participants. In addition, the

participants ranged about the aspect on how long they are studying at the

Catholic school, is on minimum range of 3 months due to the lack of participants

available. Lastly, the study will be conducted at the grounds of SPCT Campus

only. There will be no exploring to the other school needed or such topic that is

less valuable and useless to the study.

The uniqueness of this study from the other study is that, it is a very rare

study. A study that will discussed, the lived experiences of the Muslims student

studying in a Catholic school, that it will tackle about the positive and negative

experiences of a Muslim student while studying in a Catholic School. This will

overview the way of a student whose religion differ from the vision, mission, and

goal of schools culture and beliefs. The environment differ from his/her own

home and by that, the study will explore more things that is not discussed from

the previous studies. One of the unique factors of the research is that, it focused

9
only on the Muslim students who are in the Junior and Senior highschool

department. That is also within the grounds of the SPCT campus.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to let the readers aware of the experiences of

an individual whose religion differ from school his/ her enrolling for. This study will

help the students to determine or to be knowledgeable about the experiences of

other people particularly the Muslim students at the Catholic school, which are

commonly experience by them and in that case, it might give awareness to those

Muslim students whose planning in enrolling in a Catholic School.

Research Objectives

This study aims to explore the lived experiences of Muslim students in a

Catholic School. Specifically, this will seek to answer the following questions:

1. What were your reasons why you choose to enroll in a Catholic School?

2. What were your experiences while studying in a Catholic School?

3. How were you able to cope up with the challenges and difficulties you

have encountered?

Review of Related Literature and Studies

10
Statistical evidence of Muslim students at Catholic School

Even though each school has its own culture and policy, Muslim students

nowadays occupied most of the Catholic schools found in todays generation.

Furthermore, the students with other religion also enroll at Catholic schools too.

That is a very significant progress in history. Wherein the past few years,

Catholics are the only students enrolled in a Catholic school, but then Muslims

students slowly emerged at Catholic schools which are a very surprising and

then the slowly immersion of other religions began. According to a Census,

moreover 2,200 Catholic schools specifically primary and secondary schools are

establish in England and in Wales with the educated Muslim pupils around 26000

and more. And also, the Census stated that, 1 out of 3 enrolles who enrolled at

the Catholic schools were not Catholics (Digal, 2009).

There are more 2.75 million Muslim in America, and the number is growing

rapidly, according to recent census data. One result of the growth is that public

school district around the country must grapple with questions of how to

accommodate Muslim student. Some of the Muslim student complaining why

catholic people judging them while they did not know how Muslim people treated

good his Catholic, they consider Muslim are violent, but they did not know it is

their way of teaching a lesson. Muslim students felt that they are dangerous

Muslim says that catholic people are ignorant of Islam and its teaching, but if the

students in that school had a clear mind in understanding the belief of one

another, and knows the pillars of them, then with that discrimination will never

happen (White, 2012).

11
According to the school principal, Jose Salamanca (2018), the institution

teaches the students to loves ones own religion and the other religion too.

According to studies the said school was run by the Diocese of Cotabato, that

comprises with moreover 300 students: 200 for the catholics, 98 for the Muslims

and the rest are the Lumads. The mixed religious traditions of Muslims and

Catholics was present in the said school, in which all students are obliged to

participate in any events or activities held in the school, without minding the

difference in Religion.

Muslims and Hindus tend to have the fewest years of formal schooling.

According to a Pew Research Center Global Demographic Study (2019), that

shows wide disparities in average educational levels among religious groups.

These gaps in educational attainment are partly a function of where religious

groups are concentrated throughout the world. There are two economically

developed countries with high levels of education overall and low levels of

attainment among Hindus reflect the fact that 98% of Hindu adults live in the

developing countries of India, Nepal and Banglades. There also are important

differences in educational attainment among religious groups living in the same

region, and even the same country, in sub-Saharan Africa, for example,

Christians generally have higher average levels of education than Muslims.

Some social scientists have attributed this gap primarily to historical factors,

including missionary activity during colonial times.

Challenges of Muslim students at Catholic School

12
Some of Muslim students is comfortable to a Catholic school because they

are treated equally. Not all Catholic students hates Muslim students, because

some of Catholic students knows what is the real attitude of a Muslims student.

The reason why Catholic students hate Muslims, because they are known as

strict and sensitive (Rabah, 2011).

Parents may not strictly and actively adhere to faith, but mostly feel that

the religious framework of their child’s education at a missionary school, even

they are Muslim they also trust the Catholic institutions and either the Muslim

parents or other parents observed that there are many religion that have been

attending or choosing to enroll in Catholic school. It helps the Muslim students to

be agnostic or those belonging to other faiths besides Christianity, to learn more

about Catholic religion in school. It gives opportunity for those Muslim students

studying in a Catholic school to know the others religion about their differences

about their beliefs. It is not being a Muslim students among their Christian friends

does not leave them feeling uncomfortable, because the local Catholic school

does have a higher standardized test scores than its secular counterpart and that

non-Catholic parents choose the school because of the ethos and "value

system", as well as Catholic schools' reputation for a "good standard of

education." (Nelis, 2016)

Belonging to a minority religion, even if one is a secular person, and

connects a youth with the God they follow, regardless of what religion they

practice at home, and gives them a moral foundation to go out into the world and

be proud of their identity. Sienna Catholic (2008), stated that Mr. Malik was born
13
in Afghanistan and raised as a Muslim, a faith he carried with him to Australia

when his brother sponsored his education, According to him, at first in the

Catholic school he was a bit scary but as soon he got to know the students and

teachers it become normal to him.

In studying at a Catholic school was not easy for him, because every day

there are so many questions to answers about his religion and it was good for

him because the more questions to ask the more he became energized. Though

he was in Catholic school, teachers and his friends allowed him to do his prayers

and follow his religion. He also explained one of the core practices of Muslim

worship is the five daily prayers; one for dawn, midday, mid-afternoon, sunset

and evening time, but for him it was no problem at school. He said, though he

was in a Catholic school, they allowed him to do his prayers and follow his

religion. But sometimes he would forget to pray because he would be playing

soccer or he has something to do at lunchtime (Keyte, 2017).

Sun Coast Daily (2018), stated that Abdul can't understand some of topics

and teaching about religions because it's more Christian topics but sometimes he

have a opportunity to share his religion to his classmates. Sometimes, he can’t

participate field trips, campings, outings, and overnight because his parents not

allow him to attend. Some students are afraid of him or other Muslims because of

the history and they thought that Muslims inclined of war. It is difficult for Abdul to

integrate as there are prejudices in the society. He encountere any untowardly

incidents he perceive that it is due to his religion but it is not necessarily the case.

All of the struggles and challenges of Abdul at Catholic school, he's now long
14
graduated, he said that he still continued to have a communication with his

teachers who fostered his love of learning.

According to Abdellatif (2016), a muslim student and she was studying at

Catholic school for almost seventeen years. From her first day of kindergarten to

her last day of college, she have attended schools rooted in the tradition of

Catholicism. At her journey while she was studying at catholic school, it was so

peaceful and sometimes has a quite misunderstandings happened. When the

time she felt like, she was treated equal because she couldn't expect than his/her

classmates treated her in a nice way. At her second grade by Yasmeen

presentation his/her classmates was being curious about what she was being

presented about the misbaha, and by that curiousness of her classmates

Yasmeen was been asking about her religion which is Muslim. By that

curiousness Yasmeen has the opportunity to explain about what was her religion

goes like, and she was explained it well to her classmates. Yasmeen Abdellatif

said this a kind of quote that "It was okay not to always say the perfect thing at

the perfect time it was okay to be my introverted quiet self. That was all okay

because in the end I knew that when I need to speak up I will, I might be

nervous, and I might not do a perfect job, but I would get through it, like I always

have."

According to Nadine (2011), an Australian Muslim, specifically a Lebanese

girl. At the age of eleven years old her mother was migrated to Australia.

According to Nadine what makes her identity as a Australian, because of the

pure Australian people that was been surrounded her like the Australian foods,
15
culture, or beliefs. By that kinds of doings of the Australian people she can't

losses her faith as a pure Muslim or Lebanese, because she do what we call it as

their rituals which is the ramadan, and by that whenever she was in Australia but

her heart remains as what her faith and religion is.

According to Ibn (2018), for a Muslim student who has a understanding of

the beliefs of Islam. There is nothing wrong with attending such schools, as long

as he finds himself tempted by a need to go there to learn a skill or profession or

to gain specific knowledge. While he is confident that he will not be swayed by

the torrent of what he is taught there. It is clear to him that studying in this

Catholic school is permissible as long as the aforementioned guidelines was

observed.

Reasons why Muslim study/ enroll at Catholic School

Khanom (2017) stated that all Muslims want to have a good education.

They want to go to different universities that had a good rate so that they can be

better as a student and they found out that in Catholic school, has the high power

careers to attend. She also stated that every school should not discriminate

based on religion, color, and etc. Because Muslim and Catholic are also the

same, they are both marked by a spirit. In addition, Yasmeena said that the

abrahamic tradition of Muslims help the Muslim comfortable to go to catholic

schools. Futhermore, she also observed that there are many religions have been

attending or choose to enroll in catholic school like their religion, which is Muslim

and also hindu, sikh and rastafarian. Laslty Yasmeena end her speech with a

16
unique quote, it’s stated that even if you might not share with the same faith, it

doesn’t mean that all of us don’t wish to be educated.

Sivister (2017), stated that all students have the right to choose of what

school they want to choose, students have freedom of what school they want.

Students choose the best school for their career dream, of what they want to be.

Most of best schools for students are Catholic schools. That has a very high

standard of education, and at the same time, a good quality of education. Now,

were talking about why Muslims attend catholic school. Muslim students that

want a good quality of education choose a catholic school because it has a good

quality of education, that’s why some Muslim students enroll Catholic schools.

Some Muslim students choose catholic school because of the advised

from their parents. Muslim parents really care about the future of their children,

that’s why they choose a good quality of education whether its catholic school or

not. Just thinking for what is better and most suitable for them. Somehow catholic

school teaches about Islam, Buddhism and other religion so why not choose

Catholic school. Catholic Schools or Non catholic Schools, Schools should

accept any kind of student if it has a different culture, skin, beliefs, or even

religion, because they have the right to lived (Lim, 2016).

Coughlan (2016), stated that according to Bisma Tirmizi, “the spirituality

taught in a Catholic school can help bind the gap between character education,

academics and social interactions”. The parents of Muslim students want to

enroll their child at the catholic school to provide them a quality education, Even

Muslim parents can gain benefits in letting their child to study in the Catholic
17
School. And they found out the trust of the Catholic school’s institutions for

imparting academic education. Through religious connections to the Muslim

students, Because Muslim and catholic are also the same, they're both marked

by a spirit. Even parents who don’t experience affinity with any religious group

often want their children to obtain an education steeped in spiritual lesson.

Fuller (2014), stated that when it came to choosing a primary school all

people wanted to have a good job when it talks about the future. They need to

take the challenges for the brighter future like the Muslims who enrolled on a

catholic school, but it doesn’t matter if you have a different religion or the same.

Some of Muslims are sacrificing just to make their future brighter and some of

Muslim said that education is everything it can make you up when the times you

are down. Muslim studied on the catholic school because catholic education

provide a high quality education to all.

According to Ali (2017), she has a five children she decided to send

his/her children at catholic school. She has a experienced too before to study at

catholic school and and that experienced makes her to be respectful because by

studying at catholic school her characteristic molded her by the good manners of

the catholics and also she knows how to respect also other religions. That's why

his/her children wanted her to study at catholic school for the reason that she

wants ther her children knows to respect others faith and traits not only in

academics. She stated also that " religious character of the school was not the

barrier that many presumed it would be. It was the importance that the school put

18
on faith which meant I knew that my faith and that of my family would be

respected."

According to Alhamad (2012), at any of the countless secular universities

she might have chosen, religion would be beside the point. But she picked one

that would seem to underline her status as a member of religious minority. She

enrolled at the University of Dayton, a Roman Catholic school, and she says it

suits her well. "Here, people are more religious, even if they're not Muslim, and I

am comfortable with that.", said Ms. Alhamad, an undergraduate in civil

engineering.

Aside from the problem and issues on education, Muslim problems

regarding the autonomous region had been solved. But before the effectiveness

of the bill, Bangsamoro Organic Law (Republic Act No. 11054). Catholic

educational institution is one of the many supporters who joined the calls on the

Philippines legislators for the implementation of the said bill. The said bill was

also undergo many times of deliberation by the legislators and, if the congress

fails or late to implement the law, many fears the destruction of the peaceful

relationship between the Moro rebels and the Philippines Government stated by

Saludes (2016).

Noel (2016), stated that according to Gus Miclat Convenor of the All Out

Peace movement, Filipino people are losing significant time in dealing with the

long deliberation of the said bill. And also the implementation of the bill will

19
become a vital component on achieving the peace between the muslim and

catholic people. According to San Andres the proposed law is not just an ordinary

legislation but a work/ a piece to do social justice, for the injustices that have

been done to the Muslims in Mindanao.

A negotiated peace regarding the conflict in the region, between the

Catholics and Muslims are the only solution to solve the problem. Catholics

citizens should promote peace to all human kind. It is already been 500 years

since the Spaniards came and Christianity descended into the land of

Philippines, but then the discrimination to the Muslims never stop and still

continues to the present time. It's been four decades since the Moro Rebels

seeks for the Muslims Autonomy. And in some later date the bill was signed into

a form of law by President Rodrigo Duterte on July 26, 2018. And at last the

peace agreement between the Government of the Philippines and the Moro

Islamic Liberation Front in 2014 are now formally signed (Emelia, 2018)

According to Paul Barber (2009), Service director of the Catholic School,

states that: It is nice to witness an institution that will become the bridge of the

diversity and the integration of the country. The chairman of the accord coalition,

Rabbi Dr. Jonathan Romain supports the campaign of the state funded schools in

which a school should be open to all or accessible to all with or without the

Catholic background. An institution in Mindanao named Notre Dame High School

(in Katico) offers a great chance for Christian, Muslim, and Lumad kids to study

religion together. In which they'll learn to respect and give importance to one

20
another. And also having one common ultimate goal that is to understand each

others faith and culture.

Nationwide the enrollment of Muslims at catholic schools has been

substantially rising in recent years. According to a Census, that more of the Non

catholic student have been attending Catholic schools. But it’s not a problem

because it can be fruitful collaboration between Christians and Muslims.

Theoretical Lens

This study of Self-Determination Theory proposed a model work of

motivation. It operates into two namely; intrinsic motivation and extrinsic

motivation. This two explains the concept of students being motivational to the

school and makes an important distinction between tow motivatal issues of why

versus what for. And what are the reasons of this lead effort to achieve this goal?

Cited by Lens, Matos, and Vansteenkiste, (2008).

Siqueira and Wechsler, (2006), stated that the intrinsic motivation involves

a student to perform an activity because of their interest to any subjects that

objects them to perform carriedly out. While extrinsic motivation, students

interested to do task peformances or activities externally out and being

dependent to other's opinions or suggestions in a given task.

Researchers state that intrinsic students motivate others to involvement

and maintenance in the activity that so that happens as the result of gaining

influenced and creates satisfaction because they consider them pleasant.

21
This study is related according to Penna (2001) that the study object of

Psychology in this various theories derived from four main movements.

Cognitive, psychoanalytic, behavioral, and humanistic of the muslim students.

SDT builds on the principle of evaluating about motivation for the sake of

their parent's proudness of their child and also involved in teaching and learning

process.

22
CHAPTER 2

METHOD

This chapter will discuss regarding the methods used in the study. It

comprises of the analysis on the philosophical assumption, interpretative

framework, research design, research environment, participants and sampling,

ethical consideration, role of the researchers, research tool, data collection, data

analysis, and trustworthiness of the study.

Interpretative Framework

The philosophical assumption as implanted on the interpretative

framework would give importance on realities that exist in many and unique

ways. Our proposal on the study of the lived experiences of Muslim students in

the Catholic school will be anchored on this paradigm where it highlights the

numerous information of the day to day experiences of Muslim students in the

Catholic school. This information will be obtained using the three variables of the

study. The first variable stated the lived experiences of Muslim students in the

Catholic school. This will talk about their reasons and motivation why they

enrolled on that institution and their memorable experiences while studying on

that institution. The second variable will point out the experiences of Muslim

students in Catholic school. This will tackle the difficulties faced by the Muslim

students while studying on a Catholic environment. Lastly, the third variable will

discuss the coping mechanisms of Muslim students as they faced their own

23
struggles while studying in the Catholic school. This variable would obtain this

kind of information from the participants of the study.

Research Design

A qualitative design will be used in this study. Where in it distinguish the

relationship of an individual or a group to a particular social issue, by means of

understanding and exploring its true meaning (Creswell, 2013). A qualitative

phenomenological design that seeks to understand deeply the issue connected

to our society. Our life are full of mysteries, that are needed to be studied for our

human brains to be able to understand it clearly. This design will filled up the gap

of the understanding to the said study and it will also explain the concept of a

certain happenings in ones life. This design includes emerging questions and

procedures, collecting of data in a natural surrounding, and examination and

explanation of the data that is gathered in the study. This design is centered on

an in-depth scrutiny of the lived experiences of every individual in different

situation including their idea, perception and emotion egarding these

experiences. The strength of this design is that the discovery of the study cannot

automatically be predicted nor forestall.

In the context of this study, the researchers will utilize phenomenological

design to examine the lived experiences of Muslim students that are currently

enrolled in Catholic School in a discipline manner. Phenomenological design as

an question coming from philosophy and psychology that would greatly help the

24
researchers to obtain data from the participants on how they describe a certain

happenings in their life.

Research Environment

This study will be conducted in a Catholic Institution in Davao City and this

is Saint Peter's College of Toril (SPCT). The compelling reasons why researchers

chose these schools as the research environment of the study because it

qualifies on the following criteria: (a) it is easily to locate the main participants of

our research (b) the school is open for all students regardless of religion (c) the

school is easily accessible within Davao City. We as a researchers of this study

believe that this school (SPCT) is exact for us to conduct our research because

we have enough participant to interview and gather participant of the study as to

what the data described below.

St. Peter's College of Toril (SPCT) is a private Filipino Catholic school in

Toril, Davao City. It is owned and administered by the Presentation of Mary

Sisters and guided by foundress Anne Marie Rivier. It was established on July 1,

2018. The school levels are from Kindergarten up to College. The present

administrator of the school was Sister Grace B. Bueno, P.M.

The school SPCT located at Davao City, Davao Del Sur, Philippines. At

110 Maharlika Highway, Toril, Davao City, 8000 Davao Del Sur. (The map was

Participants and Sampling

In this conductive study, the researchers will make use of the purposive

sampling in selecting the participants of the study. The way of sampling is also

known as judgemental or subjective sampling (Crossman, 2017). Purposive

sampling only focused on the characteristics of the population and the objective

of the study, because it is non-profitability. According to Saul McLeod published

on 2014, Sampling is a process of selecting a representative group from the

population under study. Target population is a total group of individuals from

which a sample might be drawn.

In this study, the researchers will select the primary participants of the

study based on the following criteria: (a) the person must be Muslim student who

study at the Catholic school, (b) the person must be a bona-fide student of the
26
selected Catholic school and, (c) the person must be studying for at least 3

months at a Catholic school.

The researchers will use these kind of criteria to ensure that the

participants are a reliable and credible source of information, who had enough

knowledge that can be used in answering and responding to the questions given.

Other than that, the researchers will select four (4) participants on the Junior and

Senior High School Department. Even though the total total amount of Muslim

Students studying at SPCT are in 17 count. In some conditions, only four

participants agreed to be interview by the researchers due to data confidentiality

issued by the guidance office. To collect different kinds of opinions and

experiences of Muslim student on the ground of a Catholic School. The

researchers believed that the participants of the study will surely participate

actively and provide necessary data or information, that is needed for this study

to work.

Ethical Consideration

In this qualitative research, the researchers will abide to the calculated

standard and assign procedures as a committed non bias researchers. During

the interview with the participants a consent will be given, that comprises of the

goals and purpose of the study. In which the researchers will explain it using a

dialect that the participants can greatly comprehend the study. The researchers

will also be observant to the transmission of the information that could hinder any

27
participants. Foremost, the privacy and confidential information of the participants

will be highly secured, such as the names, contact numbers, address and etc.

Furthermore, the information given by the participants will be respected

that includes the information he/ she didn't want to be publicized. Thus, the

researchers will used a single letter and a number to represent the participants’

identity. APA format will be used in citing and referencing any information that is

related to the studies. The semi-structured guide questions should not contain

any offensive or discriminating statements that might offend the participants

which is bad. And the guide questions should be prepared by the researchers

with great comprehension to their study, to avoid miscommunication and

misinterpretation. Lastly, the researchers will not pay the participants with money

but pay them with a token as a gift or remembrance that he/ she willing

participated in conducting this study.

Role of the Researchers

The researchers will present and inform the participants with a consent

before conducting the interview, which is a type of in-depth interview. In addition,

the researchers will respect the opinions of the participants and conduct the

study without bias. In conducting the interview the researchers will use clear and

well explained instructions, for both sides to prevent miscommunication and

misinterpretation. More importantly, the researchers' role in this study is to create

and provide, trusted and reliable work that would supply the lack of

28
understanding and learning of the human beings regarding the lived experiences

of Muslim students in Catholic school.

Research Tool

In this study, the researcher will use interview (In-depth), and Structured or

Semi-structured guide questions that will be given to answer by the participants

we might choose to interview with. In-depth Interview, a qualitative research

technique that interviews a small group of respondents or Muslim students to

explore their perspectives associated with a program about their experiences

and expectations towards Catholic school. They often used to provide context to

other data (such as outcome data) and detailed information about a person's

thoughts and behaviors to explore new issues in depth.

According to Carolyn Boyce, published on May 2006 said that in depth

interview give much more detailed information than data collection, because it is

more on verbal information than statistic and numericals data analysis through

information. It may provide a more relaxed atmosphere in collecting information

because people may feel comfortable of giving you informations about them and

how you tend to observe it while conducting a research. Observing is a way to

listen to the participant the one who you've been interviewed it and Structured is

only provided with interview questions that you should ever to focus on asking to

the participants no more or less, and semi-structured mostly like structured that

gives guidance to the participants in case for them to answer honestly. This

research instrument focuses on a qualitative textual data not a quantitative data

29
that give flexibility through an open- ended interview and a structured interview.

This could be a helpful tool in covering rich information of the personal

experiences of the muslim students of the study.

In addition, the researchers will ask permission from the participants to

organized a schedule with them wherein the specific date and interview session

will be discussed. After that, the researchers also planned to get the permission

of the participants in using recording tools such as video cameras and any other

recording materials to record the said interview. Lastly, the researchers will use

the method of In-depth interview and document analysis in examining the data

collected.

Data Collection

In this study, the data will be collected through the use of semi-structured

interview guide questions, that can be modified by the researchers depending on

the given situation, during the in-depth interview with the participants. Which is a

one on one basis, one participant one researcher who are going to ask and

answer the given questions. Beforehand the researchers and the participant will

planned a schedule on a certain date they are free, in which the interview

session will be held. And also the researchers planned to get the permission of

the participants to record and wrote down his/her responses. Lastly the

researchers will ask the participants regarding the guide questions and some

additional follow up questions, to fully understand the thought of the participants

30
until he/ she response to the interview question with saturated answers. That's

the time when the researchers will stop the interview.

Data Analysis

Qualitative Phenomenology Research, it is the most important part of all

qualitative research that collected information not numerical data. This process of

organizing amd analyzing information dyring research that suggested to draw

conclusions also on the theme of the research. It is a descriptive data that

captures concepts and opinions, this includes transcripts from interviews,

audio/video recordings, and notes from an observation.

According to Diana Hart, published on May 6, 2016, an example of a

qualitative phenomenology research study of Muslim students lived experience of

academic achievement despite of Islamophobia. In the case of this research, the

purpose was to illuminate the essence of what it means to be a Muslim student

matriculating in an American educational institution and persisting toward

academic achievement. To analyze data analysis, it is vital for this analysis

because we don't want to put ourselves into a rigid set of rules but qualitative

analysis had a ground rules each of it.

Thematic analysis. One of the common tools used in analyzing qualitative

research, by means of grouping the analyzed data according to its themes

(Cristibal, 2017). In this research paper, thematic analysis will be used to

discover and understand deeply the lived experiences of Muslim students at

Catholic School. That would undergo different stages such as: collecting data,

31
coding data, code validation, themes identification, information consolidation and

finalizing theme names.

Trustworthiness of the Study

Even though there are countless of critics that are still unsure to recognize

the trustworthiness of qualitative research. Triangulation method exist a long time

ago to show that, research findings are credible and reliable. According to the

statement of Graneheim and Lundman (2006), // to fulfill the trustworthiness of

the study, one must meet the four criteria of it which are credibility that links with

internal validity; dependability, which is linked to reliability; transferabiliy, which is

a structure of external validity; and confirmability that spins on the matter of

presentation //.

Furthermore, credibility and dependability will supports and highlights of

trustworthiness of qualitative data. Thus, the researchers will recourse to do the

following steps to meet these criteria: (a) the acceptance of approved research

methods (b) the experience of an early familiarity with the culture of the

participants of the study (c) examination of the research project (d) abidance to

research ethics as of the freedom of the participants of the study to be candid

and to decline to participate in the study and (e) confirmability checks in which

the participants will be asked to read any transcripts of dialogues in which they

have participated. This will be needed to give importance to the consideration

that the participant’s words should match to what they actually mean.

32
In addition, transferability is focused on the degree of the findings of the

study that will be used in different kinds context. To meet this kind of requirement,

the researchers goal to provide enough and prosperous description of

occurrence under inspection to the readers and future researchers through

triangulation method for them to have a deeper understanding of a occurrence

experience by the participants, thereby equipping them to cross-examine the

instances of occurrence that will be described in this paper with those that they

have seen emerge in their situations. In order to assess the degree of

truthfulness of the data that will be collected in this study, similar plan utilizing the

same method but conducted in distinct setting could be a great impact to this

study and a very important one.

Moreover, to address confirmability, the researchers will use steps

especially members check, inspection and confirmability check, that have to be

taken in this study. By means of members check and inspection, it is a method in

which the researchers will cross examine the data collected to ensure that the

product of it will be the result of the experiences and the ideas of the participants

rather than the preferences, characteristics and bias of the researchers. To

address the validity of the study, the researchers utilize the method called

Confirmability check in which the researchers let the participants of the study

inspect the transcribe data from the interview, to ensure that the data collected

are what the participants of the study means.

Chapter 3

Results and Discussion

This chapter presents the collected result and analysis on the complexities

experience by the Junior & Senior high school Muslim student in Saint Peter's

College of Toril. The findings presented in the section are taken from the in-depth

interview. The discussions of the result are arranged in accordance with the

objectives of the study.

As a guide for the readers on the quoted response of the research subject

highlighted in the discussion, P refers to the participants involved in the in-depth

interview , refers to the participants from in-depth interview and L refers to the

coded lines in the transcription of interview response that are found in the

appendix.

In this study, the researchers mainly focused in gathering pure and

untainted data from the participants of the study concerning their lived

experiences as Muslim students at a Catholic school. It involves their reasons in

enrolling in a Catholic School, their positive and negative experiences while

studying in a Catholic School, and their coping mechanisms in dealing with those

negative experiences they encounter.

Reason of the Muslim Student enrolling in a Catholic school

Reasons emerge when a person decide to choose a certain thing that is

good for him/ her. The same thing for our Muslim brothers and sisters, each of

34
them had their own reasons in choosing to enroll in a Catholic Schools.

According to Sanchita Chawdhury (2013), friends can be your aspirations in life.

Having a good friend at your side will eventually help you to achieve your goals

and dreams. Foremost, a friend's influence can make you set your goals and

work towards achieving them. Not only that, true friends will always encourage

you in achieving your goals and dreams in life.

As stated by Participants 1 and 2:

"...One of my friend na si M*** pud ang nagap motivate sa

- P1L5
"...One of my friends named M*** motivates me in
studying at Saint Peter's College of Toril, then she told me
good and nice things about Saint Peter..."

"...Then akoang mga friends kay daghan man sad koy

"...My friends, because many of my friends at Mati
transferred at Saint Peter that is why I'm influenced by
them..."

Participants 1 and 2 realize that friends do really influence them in

choosing a school for them. Especially if friends are really close to them. They

might literally change someone's thought by just some few words. Also, an idea

from a group of friends can really make you decide to agree with them like the

thing that the participants of our study experienced, that many of her friends in

Mati enrolled at Saint Peter that is why she also enrolled on that school.

35
According to them, the cause of being alone on a place you are not familiar with

and a place without a companion at your side are really the worst thing ever.

Planned life is somewhat a negative idea to most of us, by means of

stealing our freedom to choose and decide, and restricting our movements. But

planned things have also their positive side too. According to Asah Meah (2015),

parents will always lead you to follow a certain path that they think its the best for

you in order to succeed in life, but doesn’t mean that you need to live a life that's

the same with them. Just be true to yourself and be who you want to be, and

never ever let anyone dictate on how you live your own life.

As stated by Participants 2 and 3:

"...Kanang planado na jud siya since I was

elementary, Grade 6 giingnan na jud ko saakong
lola na sa Saint Peter nako magstudy so pagka
Grade 6 na nako ipabalhin nako..." - P2L1
"...It is planned since I was in elementary, I have
been told in Grade 6 by my grandmother that I'm
going to study at Saint Peter, so when I am
already in Grade 6 I will be transferred..."

"...Gi pili pud ni saakong parents na dire ko mag

skwela that’s why Murag wala ko ni pugos nisunod
ko saiya kay para man sad ni saakong future..." -
P3L1
"...It is chosen by my parents that I am going to
study at Saint Peter, and also I am not forced to
do so. I just follow what they said and its because
its for my future too..."

36
Participants 2 and 3 said that they are planned to study at a Catholic

school specifically at Saint Peter. It was planned by someone who are near in

their hearts. According to one of them, it is not like that she is forced to study at

that school. She knows that it's good for her by means of following her parents

guidance to have a better future. Also, according to one of them, that since she

was little, it was planned by her grandmother to study at Saint Peter. So she just

followed what her grandmother's decision, because according to her, everything

occurs for a certain reasons.

Each one of us have our own desires in life. That's the same with the

Muslim students they also have their dreamed school, dreamed life, and

dreamed future. According to Kshitij Singh (2017), a want is something that a

person desires, its either immediately or in the future. Unlike needs, wants differ

from one person to another. Wants can change over a period of time. This is in

contrast to needs, which remain constant throughout the entire life of the person.

As stated by Participants 1 and 2:

"...Gusto man pud unta nako na mo skwelag downtown

P1L5
"...I just want to study at downtown areas for me to
experience new things, my mother are fine with that too.
But she told me that I will be a little far away from them,
that's when I realize that I should just study at Saint
Peter's..."

37
"...Mostly sa downtown gud pero dili man musugot akong
lola kay highschool pa ako ba like gr. 7 bata-bata pa siya or
magdowntown-downtown..." - P2L13
"...Mostly in downtown areas, but my grandmother are not
agree with it, because I am a highschool at that time like
grade 7 still a kid or it was grade 6 that I am not permitted to
go to downtown areas..."

The participants agree that they have their own desires in choosing a

school for them. A school that is located at downtown areas. According to one of

them that it is fine with his mom to study at downtown areas but the distance of

being apart from one another do really bother his mom. That's when he realized

that the school he wanted is really Saint Peter. Also according to one of them too

that she desires to study at downtown schools but her grandmother restricted her

to do so, because of the age she had at that time. She was still a kid, a kid that is

not fully prepared from a civilized and modern environment.

Choosing a rightful school for your child is not all about the education it

provides, but also the amount of money it requires. Free stuff no longer exist,

cause every little and great things cost. Especially these days were school cost a

lot more money than before, but it didn't change the fact that the school these

days provides a very high quality education to all. According to Hailey Lee

(2014), Jay Kimmelman, figure out a sustainable and profitable model of

institution that provides high quality education to all children living in a poor

countries. By means of a one entire year of studying at that institution is equal to

38
a two years of academic achievement. That is why parents come to these

schools and pay these affordable school fees, $6 per child per month.

As stated by Participants 1 and 2:

"...Sa Saint Peter's ang book nila mga barato ra

pud..." - P1L3
"...Here in Saint Peter the books are affordable
and cheaper..."

"...Ug affordable makaya sa badyet sa akong lola..." -

P2L1
"...And it's affordable, my grandmother can pay it with
no problem..."

Participants 1 and 2 agree that the school they are enrolled are affordable.

By means of, the books it sales are cheaper than the books of the other schools.

It's a school that even a pocket of an old woman can afford. Especially a school

that provides high quality education to all students, with the affordable payments.

Expenses a thing that always in us nowadays. A family with the expenses

in water, electricity, food, shelter, education and many more. Everybody cost in

many ways like the fare you pay when transporting from one place to another, a

meal that you bought in canteen and many more. Expenses will continue to exist,

because it is already in us. According to Jeremy Vohwinkle (2018), a personal

budget is a list of your expected incomes and expenses, that will help you to plan

on how your money will be spent or saved as well as to track your spending

39
habit. A budget is really a great tool in gaining a better outlook at your spending

habits.

As stated by Participants 1 and 3:

"...Since duol ang Saint Peter's sa among balay dali ra

pud ko maka sakay then maka less pud kog gasto..." -
P1L3
"...Since Saint Peter are near in our home, I can ride
easily then it lessen my expenses..."

"...Third kay duol lang sa amo tapos gamay lang

ang akong magastos ..." - P3L5
"...Thirdly, it's because it is near to our home, that
my expenses are low..."

Participants 1 and 3 agree that their expenses in studying at a Catholic

School are low. It is also because of the location of their school from their home,

which they think that it is near to their location. That is why their transportation

fee are low, because of the distance they travel from home to school and vice-

versa.

Being different from others are really a scary thing. In a place were your

race is in minimal state and the other race are in dominant, that each race had

their own beliefs and culture, and everything might happen the abuse,

discrimination, bullying, and many more negative thoughts. But being diverse had

its positive side too. Wherein you have a unique characteristic that differ from

one another, a characteristic that classify who you really are. According to Aryan

Al (2016), most people want to be the same with everyone else. They appear to
40
be afraid of what others may think of them, so they endure pains to not be

different, to not be singled out. It takes someone with confidence and self-esteem

to go their own way, without regard to what the majority think. These type people

are the strong individuals; they are independent and think for themselves.

As stated by Participants 1, 2 and 4:

"...At first medyo hadlok ko kay ako ray isa muslim sa Saint
Peter's but since after few days naa nakoy nakaila na mga new
mate..." - P1L10
"...At first I'm moderately scared, because I am the only Muslim
at Saint Peter, but after few days I have met with new
personalities and make friends with them. Especially when I met
my best friend who are also my school mate..."

"...Kanang murag mahadlok ko first day palang basin wala koy

ma cope up akong mga problems in terms of school..." - P2L11
"...Its like I'm scared at my first day, because I think that I
couldn't make new friends and I'm also scared that my problems
in school are not solved immediately..."

"...Na intimidate ko sa mga tao sa paligid ng School kase halos lahat ng

mga estudyante ng Saint Peter’s College of Toril ay Catholic..." -P4L6

"...I am intimidated by the people around the school, because most of

them are Catholics..."

The participants 1, 2 and 4 agreed that they are scared at their first day in

a Catholic School. A school that are mostly surrounded by Catholic students. Like

they feel that what being diverse from everybody means. A feeling that they don't
41
belong to that environment, full of christians. But sooner they realize that it's not

really bad, being in a Catholic School even though you are a Muslim is as good
"...Kanang mahadlok ko kung unsay treat nila sa mga kanang dili ka same na
as being a Muslim at a Islamic School. That means that they don't feel different
religion tapos kanang basin awkward gud, like in ana na basin maglisod kog
fromapproach sa mga
others, the wayteachers mga in ana

they - P2L11
are in the same footing.
"...I'm scared in the way they would treat me cause my religion is differ
fromOutthem. Then aI common
of place, will feel awkward,
scenario like it would be when
we experience, hard for

moved from a place that is unknown to us. A place where we can meet new

personalities with different perspectives, ideas, attitudes and behavior. That might

give you the feeling to be alone and the feeling to avoid them. The feeling that

you don't belong to the group. According to Melody Warnick (2016), moving to a

new town decrease happiness in her article entitled "Why You're Miserable After

a Move" she stated in there that moving will be always hard especially when

you’re in the middle of, recovering from, or preparing for a move. To overcome

that, you need to know that things that is normal to do and not normal to do in the

new city you are moving to. Especially when you are in the state of being

attached to the place where you can call home, its really hard to do so. Cause

place attachment is the feeling of belonging and rootedness, where you live. It

really takes time to move on.

As stated by Participants 2 and 3:

42
Participants 2 and 3 agreed that they feel awkward and op when attending
"...Kay basin ma OP ko sa others because we have different religion..." -
P3L3
a school that is differ from their religion. One of them states that she was scared

at the "...Its like I'mbecause

beginning OP to others
she because we have
is a believer of different religion..."
Islamic culture and around her are

the believers of Christianity. Which might affect their relationship and the way she

will be treated might be in questionable manner. The other one states that she

don't belong in there, because of her religion. A place that is unknown to her, a

place where she can't comprehend on.

Siblings are beings you can always count on, they can be your best friend

or even your enemies. In times when you are in misery they are always at your

side, comforting and encouraging you to move forward. That no matter what

happens they will always find ways to support you. According to Marisa Pojtinger

(2017), having a younger brother that wants to study with the same school as

yours are quite exciting. In the case of, having the power and knowledge of

already being there for a few years. That you can give him a tour around the

campus and give him all the secrets within it, and the time when you are looking

forward to them falling in love with the university the same way you did. Wanting

43
him to have enormous amounts of school pride, go to as many school sporting

events as possible, and make lots of memories. But no matter what happens,

you just want him to know that you are always at his side.

As stated by Participants 1 and 2:

"...Then isa pa naka skwela naman gud akong ate sa Saint Peter's so
naa siya'y gi share based sa iyang experiences ug mga information,
mao to gi ganahan ko ug na encourage ko na mag skwela sa Saint
Peter's..." -P1L2

"...The thing is my sister is a former student at Saint Peter's, that she

shares things based on her experiences, that is why I am encouraged
to study at that school..."
Participants 1 and 2 agreed that they are studying in a Catholic school,

because "...Kay

school. One of them states that its her sister, who are a former student at that

school and when her sister share its first hand experience on that school. His

passion for that scholl grow bigger and encourage him to study in there. The

other one states that it was her cousin who are already studying at that school, a

cousin that had the same religion with her. That sometimes give her the idea on

how she will solve her problem regarding to the differences of her religion to the

school she enroll for.

44
With the rising of tuition to the school nowadays, students tend to study in

a school that are close to their home. Dormitory that cost lots of money just to

rent it for a month or two, and kther expenses that will make you eat 2 times or

even 1 time a day. According to Joanne Atkinson (2015), rather than packing

bags to attend a university hundreds of miles away, many are picking courses at

colleges close to their home. They’re convenient, cheaper, and if you’re lucky

your mom will still wash your clothes. According to figures from the Higher

Education Statistics Agency, in 2013 more than a third of full-time students lived

at their own home or that of their parents during term time.

As stated by Participants 1, 2, 3, and 4:

"...Ang Saint Peter's man gud duol lang siya sa among balay..." - P1L2

"...Saint Peter's are close to our house..."

"...Third kay duol lang siya..." - P2L1

"...The third reason is that, it is near in our home..."

"...Mao nalang pud na akong gipili kay duol lang sa amo..." - P3L5

"...I just decided that I'm going to pick that school, cause it is near..."
Participants 1, 2, 3 and 4 agreed that they are studying in a Catholic

regardless of the religion it supervise. Also one of them states that their home are

45
in far away place from madrasa, a Islamic school, than the Saint Peter, which is a

Catholic schoo and near at their home. They also tend to be in the range of their

family while studying, because of the high tuition fees that the school regulated.

By that they will lessen their expenses and save some money for their future

careers.

Catholic School

47
Experiences of Muslim students while studying in a Catholic School

Different people that came from different environment most likely have

different experience, the same with different perspectives. Each one of us, have

of our own unique traits like our attitude, behavior, manner and etc. That also

includes our experience in life. We experience different kind of things that

depends where we live, how we live, and when we live. According to Ashley Fern

(2013), “Good judgment comes from experience and experience comes from

poor judgment.” The most significant life lessons we will ever learn will be from

the bad decisions we make. Time and experience can be your excellent

teachers, specifically when you learn from your wrong decision. Experience

comes from our way of living. It comes from suffering, agony, achievements, and

other things that make us decide.

As stated by Participants 3 and 4:

"...For example misa and then dili mi nila gina force nila na
mag luhod jud og mangalawat. Ug specially saamong CL
Rosario then
gipangayo niya akong side or akoang decision kung muadto
"...For example, when there is mass we are not forced to
kneel. Specially to our CL teacher, he shows his respect to
mine. By means of not forcing me to attend the mass and
respecting my decision, because he knows that I am a
Muslim... "

48
"...Mababait yung mga teachers dito sa SPCT lalo na ang mga
teacher na hands on talaga sa akin tulad ng CL namin... they
are considering sa aking situation na as a Muslim..." -P4L19
"...The teachers here in SPCT are kind, specially the CL
teacher who are really hands on to us and considerate to our
situation as a Muslim..."

Participants 3 and 4 agreed that the teachers in SPCT, especially the CL

teachers are considerate to them. In the way of, they feel respected in terms of

having the privilege to choose whether they will attend the mass or not. One of

them stated thst she is not forced to kneel when there is a mass ongoing, that

her CL teacher consider it and respect her decision. The other one states that,

the CL teacher of his are hands on to the likes of him (students with different

religion), because they have different beliefs so the teacher needs to be careful

what he/ she teaches.

Respect comes when we don't see others as a lowly creatures from us. A

creature who are in equal terms with us. Respect don't just matter to the status of

an individual. Each one of us deserve to be respected, even though we are

complete or not, we deserve to live a life of our own. According to Gy Suhas

(2009, Respect is not just a relationship between a superior and an inferior. It is

the relationship between equals. Respect develops in a democratic and friendly

manner. Every individual is special and is worthy of respect. From a janitor to the

President of our Country, no matter who they are, they deserve to be respected.

Their contributions may be different their talents are different but each one

deserves respect for his contributions.

49
As stated by Participants 1 and 4:

"...Ang mga student sa Saint Peter's especially akong mga classmates

adviser at subject teacher kay gina respeto ko nila kung unsa ko as a
Muslim maskin different mig religion kay gina treat ko nila as one, then
equal lang, then as'in gi respeto jud ko nila..." -P1L18
"...The students here in Saint Peter's, especially my classmates, my
adviser and my subject teachers are respectful. They respect me as who
I am as a Muslim, even though we are different in religion they still treat
me as one and in equal terms..."

"...Ang pinaka greatest positive experience ko na maconsider ay yung, I

was being respected by other people and especially yung mga teachers
Kasi that is the
greatest gratitude to me natutuwa talaga ako basta nirerespeto nila ako

too..." -P4L20

while studying at a Catholic School is being respected, respected by his

classmates, his teachers, and his new friends. According to him, being respected

by others is also the greatest gratitude he received in his life. The other one

states that he is respected as who he is as a Muslim. That they treat him in equal

terms without letting him feel that he doesn't belong to the group.

Equality, the means of being treated equally in all kind of things. One

might dream to be treated equally when he or she experience inhuman scenario.

Also one might even experience unequal treatment right now. But then again we

50
deserve to live. According to the Voices of Youth (2011), in their article entitled:

Every human being should be treated equally according to their human rights,

stated that, Humans rights is the belief that everybody should be treated equally

and with dignity no matter what circumstances they are, which means nobody

should be treated in an inhuman or degrading way. Equal does not mean that we

are all the same. Each one of us is different in our own special way and should

be treated with respect and dignity and treat others in the same way. No human

being should be discriminated against in their sexual and reproductive lives.

Everybody has the right to live their own lives.

As stated by Participants 1 and 3:

"...Gi treat jud ko nila as equal na walay halo na pag discriminate sa

ako'a, like wala nila gina pa feel na dili ko nila gusto..." -P1L11

"...They really treated me in equal terms, that they don't

discriminate me or even let me feel that I don't belong to the
group..."

"...I have a lot of experiences while studying at a Catholic School

expecting to be bullied by her schoolmates and classmates becuase of her

religion, but she didn't experience that horrible thing and just experience the

equal treatment she never expected.

Life lesson, things that you couldn't just forget easily, because they remain

in your heart and soul. A lesson that is change our way of thinking in life, and a

lesson that help you achieve your goals and dreams in life. Teachers spend a lot

of time with their students throughout the whole year. They are influential by

nature and often take advantage of opportunities to teach life lessons when they

present themselves. Life lessons taught by teachers have made a lasting impact

on many students. In many cases, sharing these life lessons can have a far

greater impact than teaching standard based content. (Derrick Meador, 2018)

As stated by Participants 1 and 4:

"...dili lang pud puro academics akong na learn, naka learn pud kog

A friend's advice nowadays give an huge impact to our lives, because they

are one of the most closest persons in our heart. A being that is always at your

side in school and a being that will always help in many ways he/ she can offer.

My companions would keep running up, this isn't to say that being Muslim among

their Christian companions does not abandon them feeling awkward, in light of

the fact that occasionally it does. They get saw in class, in the break room, and at

mass.(Ranya, 2018)

might even wander, why they do this me? A saying that always comes in our

mind when we experience bullying. According to Lopez (2017), 42% of Muslims

students is being bullied because of their religion and on their identity as a

Muslims. These are the complains of the parents of the Muslim students. Hence,

the 23% of Jewish parents, 20% of Protestant parents, and 6% of Catholic

parents said that their children were being bullied at least once in the past year.

As stated by Participants 3 and 4:

54
Participants 3 and 4 agreed that they experience bullying while studying in

a Catholic School. One of them states that, you couldn't avoid being bullied by

others. That is why you just need to ignore them, because they are not helpful in

your lives. They will not bring fortune. While the other one states that he is being

bullied by others with the use of food, like being pranked to ate a certain food that

contains a pork, which is prohibited in their religion. That makes him angry to

them, because he feel that he is not being respected by them.

Conflict starts when someone misunderstood a certain thing. People who

are furious in making decision, most likely experience conflict. There is no such

good thing, when people don't understand each other. According to Pathways to

Promise (2018), that some people misunderstand the beliefs, rituals, and

practices of all religions, because in this world we have all different kind of faiths.

That's why some people misinterpret the different religion like the roman

catholics, muslims, baptists, and etc. and they may believe that on the biblical

prophet or saint like the Virgin Mary, the Messiah or even God.

a man to eat 3 meal a day, is very essential without it, he or she couldn't do

his/her responsibilities properly. According to Purdy (2012), There are different

ways that Muslims and Catholics can show their devotion to their faith. Including

how they eat, while not all religions have eating guidelines or dietary restrictions,

many do, and they reflect the belief system of that religion. Muslims are strict in

not to eat pork, they do fasting to emphasize their spiritual focus and to observe

in certain religious holidays. However, Catholics abstained from eating meat on

good friday as an act of penance for Jesus death on the cross. The Catholic do

fasting and self-denial on lent season, by this act it shows self-discipline, as what

did Christ model towards us, who fasted 40 days and 40 nights as recorded in

the Bible, and as a means of performing penance.

As stated by Participants 1 and 4:

Unique, a trait that is embody to our soul. Each one of us have our unique

characteristics that includes our flow of ideas, our way of thinking and our way of

living. Different ideas comes from different environment. According to Khanom

(2016), that all of us has a freedom to choose a school. The muslims students

also wants a good education, and one of their choice is to have a high standard

of education. Based on her experience that she is accepted by the Catholic

students for who she is and vice versa. Khanom stated that "Just because you

might not share the same faith, doesn't mean they you don’t wish to be educated

about it."

As stated by Participants 1 and 3:

Making assignments, projects, and performing presentations are the most

common thing a student always do. Life struggles is not just only in our way of

living, it can be found at any direction. That includes struggles in our studies.

59
According to Gabby (2014), studying is a struggle that every students encounter

everyday. A lot of people, underestimate how hard some classes and concepts

may be in school.

As stated by Participants 2 and 4:

Club activities, one of the most exciting part in our life. Where we interact

with others thru activities like outdoor sports and indoor sports. A time where

books are not required and a time to enjoy our life. Extracurricular participation

isn't harmful to student performance, which participation in these forms of

activities promotes bigger educational accomplishment. Additionally, discovering

that the participation in school-related activities was additional powerfully enough

than the participation in activities outside of faculty. (Susan Gerber, 2019)

As stated by Participant 1 and 4:

Life at school, each one of us have our own way of living. That includes

our actions inside the school and outside the school. Some may be quiet at

school and noisy at the outside. But each one of us deserve to live, we have the

rights to do what we wanted to do. According to Ji Hwan (2014), entering a new

school was at first bit of nerve racking to him. Where he is in a new and different

environment than usually, a boy named Joaquin help him around the school. That

time past by and he felt totally normal.

As stated by Participants 3 and 4:

Catholic School
63
Coping Mechanism of Muslim students addressing those negative experiences

they encountered while studying in a Catholic School

Problems always have an solutions. There is no such things as unsolvable

problems, because each one of us have our own opposite reaction. According to

Richard Butler (2019), Problems always have an equivalent solution. But that

didn't mean that the problem will be solve in instant, it takes time and alot of

processes to fully solve a certain problem. "Stop thinking about the problem and

start thinking about the solution." Learn from your experiences.

As stated by Participants 1 and 3:

"...Nag go with the flow lang ko say mga difficulties na akong na experience
kay kabalo man ko na kaning mga challenges na nahitabo say ako'a kay naa
pud koy learnings na natun'an. mao to gi face jud nako ang reality..." -P1L21

"...I just go to the flow to all the difficulties I experience in my life that I know
these challenges that happened to me will help me learn of something so
that's why I had to face the reality..."

"...Gi accept nako ni by katong kabalo man ko na each human jud or kada tao
na naka encounter jud og struggles, walay tao na walay naka encounter. Gi
ani na school kay nalaman nako akong strength og weaknesses, then mao to
nahibal-an nako na ginatan-aw man jud nako kung makaya ni or dili. Mao to
wala pud ko ni give up then wala ko nagpadala sa uban tao na nagabully
sakoa..." -P3L18

"...I accept the fact of encountering struggles because there are no people in
the world that wouldn't encountered such struggles and because I know of
myself that I can overcome this and because of the school I discovered the
wekanesses and strengths that I have and when will I able to get through
this makes me strong and never give up and wouldn't struck by the bully of
others..."

64
Participants 1 and 3 agreed that they just accept and face the reality.

Because there is no such good thing in running away from the truth and held

back by just some lies. One of them states that there is no such person eho didn't

encounter struggles in life, because struggles are a normal event in our life and

by that struggles we can see our own strengths and weaknesses.

Prayer, the very basic thing to do in communicating to our God. It's either

you are wishing to a certain thing to acquired or to thank the Lord for everything

He did to us. According to Bea Hines (2017), Prayer is really an solution to all our

problems in physical or spiritual struggles. According to Bradley Nelson (2017),

prayer and a life of faith leads to greater health and well being. He said prayer

and church attendance has been found to benefit health in many arenas. Those

who are prayerful and also involved in a faith-based community are better at

coping with stress, more hopeful, more optimistic, less anxious, and less

depressed.

As stated by Participants 2 and 3:

"...Always pray to God ug ayaw ka wala ug pag-asa..." -P2L31

"...Always pray to God and never gone hope..."

"...To cope up the challenges and difficulties that I have encountered,

is faith to God specially to our God which is Allah..." -P3L13

"...To cope up with the challenges and difficulties I have encountered,

have faith in God, specially to our God named Allah..."

65
Participants 2 and 3 agreed that their faith in their God, help them resolve

their problems not just in school, but also outside the school. One of them states

that the named of their God is Allah and with the guidance of Allah nothing is

impossible.

Respect always come first to ourselves. Without respect to yourself, you

couldn't gain respect from others. Sometimes being good to others who are not

good into you are an example of a respectful human being, because we deserve

to be respected in any ways. According to Robert Pollark (2018), no one

deserves to be respected, respect is not something you deserve, because

respect is earned it is not a gift you can take for granted. Everything has an equal

reaction.

As stated by Participants 3 and 4:

"...Kung dili ta nila respetuhon ato nalang pud silang respetuhon, kay
mao man jud ang ilang attitude dili naman nato na makambyo..." -
P3L19

"...If they will not respect us, just respect them back, because you
couldn't change a person. if that who he really is then be it..."

"...Being respectful sa others para ma respect ka din sa ibang tao, kasi

yung yung ginagawa ko talaga yung una, inaadopt ko parin yun siya
na gi implement ko parin yan siya. Then it works it on time talaga
yung mag respect ka sa others and they will respect you..." -P4L26

"...Being respectful to others is the way for them to respect you back,
because I always do that from the past and that will always work
countless times..."

66
Participants 3 and 4 agreed that they respect the persons who are nkt

even respecting them. One of them states that even though others didn't respect

her she still show her respect to them, because you couldn't just change

someone from who they really is. The other one states that respecting others to

gain own respect. It was a proven experience of his that works countless of

times.

Worst happenings usually comes from negative thinkings. That includes

over thinking to a certain thing, which is not a recommendable habit, because

over thinking produce never results and with negative results comes the idea of

suicide. According to Amy Morin (2017), Overthinking is more than just a

nuisance, studies show thinking too much can take a serious toll on your well-

being. Research shows overthinkers believe they're helping themselves by

rehashing their problems in their heads. But studies show analysis paralysis is

real. Overanalyzing everything interferes with problem solving. It will cause you

to dwell on the problem rather than look for solutions.

As stated by "...Iwasan
Participants
ang2 pag
and overthinking
3: especially negative, and be
positive so na masolve imong problem easily and to become a
better person also..." -P2L35

"...Avoid over thinking, especially to negative thoughts. Be

positive so you can solve your problem easily and to become a
better person..."

"...Dili nako sila gina isip kay kabalo ko na wala japon silay
matabang saakoa. Kay the more na gina isip the more pud na
ma depress ko..." -P3L13

"...I don't mind them, because they will help me in my life.

Because the more you think of it, the more you depress..." 67
Participants 2 and 3 agreed that struggles in life are always part of our

lives that will never be out of session of our lives. Difficulties as a Muslim student

or a Catholic student are just the same of experiencing the struggles in our daily

lives that they are indeed of know how to overcome it and will be able to discover

theirselves as a student or as a Muslim.

Someone who are moving into a different environment, needs the ability to

adopt and adjust, because there is not such thing that remains in constant. That

doesn't mean that, your past lifestyle will still be the same with your current

lifestyle. Environment change so people do really change too. It's a yearning

venture, yet inquire about the occasions when instruction was offered by the

Catholics for the Catholics are gone until the end of time. The Catholic

personality never again must be communicated by each understudy and by each

educator. "Muslims teachers can be role models for Muslim children and build

bridges between school and home." (Somers, 2019)

As stated"...Since naa man 1

Ang mu adjust, subton ug dawaton sila Kung unsa man ilang mga
tinuohan ilang mga beliefs..." -P1L22

"...Since I am in Catholic school, I should be the one who will adjust.

Just accept tmand understand what are their beliefs..."

"...Dapat marunong akong mag-adopt, dapat lage tayong magbabago.

"...I should know how to adopt and change, because if you transfer to
another school. That they don't know you are a Muslom, there might
be a conflict that arises so we really need to adopt in our
environment..." 68
Participants 1 and 4 agreed that they need to adopt in their environment,

because they are the ones who are not really in there. They are just aliens from

that environment. One of them states that since he is a Muslim who study in a

Catholic School, he should be the one to adjust from his environment, because

no environment adjust for some individuals. We ourselves had the power to

decide and change our future.

Experiences from the past, do really helps us to become a better person.

Especially those regrettable moments in our life, where we learned lots of

incredible things for that to not happen again. This investigation inspected

whether Muslim understudies. Muslim understudies were progressively occupied

with assorted variety related exercises, yet were less happy with their school

understanding than Jewish understudies. The suggestions recommend

broadening the extent of grounds decent variety past race to incorporate religion.

(Taylor, 2010)

"...This challenges help me to become a better person, nakita nako akong

"...This challenges help me to become a better person, by discovering my

strength and weaknesses. I am here right now because of those experiences of
mine. That is why I really grateful in experiencing those kind of things in my
life..."

69
"...I become more tolerant talaga, yung katulad nga sa ano yung na sugatan tayo
Ganun
din yung nangyare sa akin maraming sugat yung first year dito sa SPCT, pero later
on kumapal ang aking skin in terms of social gathering yung ganyan so parang
immune na ako sa kanilang ginagawa and thats a main reason that help me to be
better and great as a person..." -P4L25

"...I become more tolerant, like when we get scratch, the more scratch I
experience, the more I am immune to the pain. That's just happen to me in terms
of social gatherings, I am immune to the prank of my classmates, tbat I become a
better person..."

Participants 3 and 4 agreed that they learn from their past experiences

and with those experiences they can now easily conquer the same problem they

encountered. One of them states that he became more tolerant by means of

being immune to pain by the continuous suffering he endure.

Giving up nowadays are always an option, because of the lack of resolve

to do a certain thing. They tend to give up as early as possible to lessen the pain

they experience. But there is no good thing in giving up, live your life without

regrets and you will achieve happiness. Our school gave a instructor to show us

how to ask. Muslims live in a methodical style, planning their time, and actually

practicing five times each day, doing certain developments that go between

standing. (Mussolini, 2015)

"...Easybylang

"...I have lots of insights and lesson that I have learned from those
experiences. First is acceptance, second is respect, third is never give

my heart..."

Participants 2 and 3 agreed that they should never give up in their life.

Fight if you can still fight, and never ever surrender. One of them states that he

not just learned on how to not give up but also to respect others, to accept her

true self, and to just listen to the people who are only near in our heart. Don't just

listen to anybody, but listen to your heart.

Friend, a being that is so close in our heart. That we may even consider

he/ she as part of your family like an older brother or a younger sister. Friends

are someone you can always rely on and they are the ones that will not fail in any

occasion. According to Live About (2017), Friends helps us deal with stress,

make better lifestyle choices that keep us strong, and allow us to rebound from

health issues and disease more quickly. Friendship is equally important to our

mental health. One study even suggested spending time with positive friends

actually changes our outlook for the better.

Aa stated by Participants 1, 3, and 4:

"...Akong friend na si Myca kay since siya kay Catholic ug ako kay

"...There were many people whom help me to face that challenges.

Especially my classmates yung grupo-grupo, and other people that I
met here in SPCT, that always help me emotionally..." P4L23
"...There were many people whom help me to face that challenges.
Especially my classmates in a group, and other people that I met here
in SPCT thst always help me emotionally..."

Participants 1, 3, and 4 agreed that a friend in need is a friend indeed. No

matter what happens true friends will always help you in any possible ways. One

of them states that his classmates, and the other people he met at SPCT help

him in facing those challenges he encountered. The other states that listening to

friends advice are really a good choice.

You are not complete as a human being when you don't have a family.

Family doesn't just mean that its a bond between blood related individuals. True

family comes in many forms. That includes brothers who are not really brothers

72
in real life. Muslim parents are also able to take their children out of school on

Muslim there have been changes in the local population and that the school is

now popular with parents who choose a Catholic school, even though they are

not Catholics. (Coughlan, 2016)

As stated by Participants 1, 2, 3, and 4:

"...Number one of that is my family, akong pamilya jud ang number
kay since sila man jud akong maduolan sa ilaha ko naga share say
akong mga problem..." -P1L25
"...Number one is my family, they are the number one most reliable
personalities in my life, in addressing to my problems I can come to
them and they will help me..."
"...First of all is my God, my parents, my friends that are the ones
who helped me overcome my difficulties also teachers and staff and
guidance office too..." -P2L34
"...First of all is my God, my parents, my friends they are the ones
who helped me overcome my difficulties also the teachers and staff
and guidance office too..."

"...Maminaw pud ko saakong parents kay sila baya jud ang nagpili ana
na school, that's why maminaw ko sailaha kay kabalo ko na para man
japon sa akong ikabubuti ang ilang mga advices..." -P3L14
"...I listen to my parents, beacuse they are the ones that choose that
school. That's why I listen to them, and I just know that all they say
were gonna be good in my life..."

"...Aside from that also my parents that helps me very much, like sa
pag-aaral ko sila nagbabayad sa tuition ko..." -P4L24
"...Aside from that, my parents also help me in my studies especially in
paying my tuition..."

73
Participants 1, 2, 3, and 4 agreed that family is everything to them. With it

they are not complete and family members are there number one supporter in

life. One of them states that his parents were the ones paying his tuition. The

other states that it's her parents that choose to enroll her on thst school, which

she think is good, because all of the choices of our parents lead to an wonderful

future we couldn't imagine.

Chapter 4

Summary, Conclusions, and Recommendations

This chapter contains the summary of the findings, conclusions and

recommendations of the study.

Summary

The researchers make use of method called in-depth interview in order

to collect pure and untainted data from the lived experiences of Muslim students

in Catholic school. The researchers used purposive sampling for the

determination of the four (4) research participants from Saint Peter's College of

Toril located on Mc Arthur Highway Toril, Davao City based on the criteria set by

the researchers. The study focused on knowing the lived experiences of Muslim

students in a Catholic school, which involves their reasons, their positive and

negative experiences while studying in a Catholic school, and their coping

mechanism in addressing those negative experiences they have encountered.

Conclusions

In this study it was affirmed that Muslim students have some

experiences in a Catholic school we just found out that not only one had they

ever encounter studying in a Catholic school but two which is in Immaculate

Heart Academy and Saint Peter's College of Toril. Mostly, they had experiences

that are positive and didn't experienced having a multiple struggles because they

were all respectful and understandable in their religion. It is also because the two

76
Catholic schools they intend to widened out their knowledge and skills has

warmly welcomed them. The researchers had really come up on the themes that

they might come up through personal, financial, unpleasant feelings, school

related, good deeds, religious things, obstruction, self assessment, survival, and

helping hand. As the researchers have come up on with these themes that base

on the gathered data from the participants of the study. The researchers

transcribe their data from their reasons on enrolling in a Catholic school, their

positive and negative experiences while studying in a Catholic school and their

coping mechanism in addressing those negative experiences they have

encountered while studying at the Catholic School.

Recommendations

The following recommendations are based on our findings and

conclusions of our study. Focus and do on an in-depth interview phenomenology

study that we may recommend on this research that needs to be improved,

persuade, and knowing its study.

Furthermore, recommendations to specific beneficiaries should be

considered such as the following:

Saint Peter's College of Toril: The researchers would like to recommend

to the institution to monitor the action of its students. To lessen and prevent bad

things to occur like on what our Muslim brothers and sisters experience. The

group also recommend to the institution to observe proper selling of goods, and

77
the proper thing to do by the food seller in addressing the Muslim students

prohibited foods.

Muslim Students: The researchers recommend to the Muslim students,

to find a rightful school for them. That will cater them equally and a institution that

strictly prohibited the act of bullying. The group also recommends fighting back

when being bullied in the terms of consulting it to the guidance or reporting it to

the teacher in charge, to avoid the horrible experience of being bullied.

Future Researchers: The group recommends to the future researchers

to widen their scope of study, the need to explore new schools. Specifically, the

group recommends to the future researchers to choose participants that have at

least 2 to 3 or more than 3 years of experience on studying at a Catholic School,

to acquire much reliable, trusted and accurate data.

sakay then maka less pud kog gasto, ug Isa pa sa Saint Peter's man gud naa
ko makatuon pag naay book since ang uban skwelahan man gud dili sila anga

friends, then na enhance pud iyang knowledge ug naka discover siya'g new
things basi sa pagtudlo sa iyang mga teachers ug the way pud sila mag tudlo kay
nindut. (L4)
pamasahe then ma dungagan akong baon then ani man gud night siya gusto
then mao to na motivate konna mo skwela diri then friends me since nag skwela

Interviewee: Wala man koy pagdududa kay since akong duha ka ate kay dugay
skwela didto Kay daghan pud silag na tun'an ug daghan sad silag achievements
ug honor students sad.
Interviewer: Gwapo Jud kag mga friends Sir ba nga reliable he kaayo, so Sir last
nimo gi pili ang Saint Peter's College of Toril?
matun'an and I hope na maparihas pud ko nila na daghang matun'an ug daghag
sa Saint Peter's then daghan kog natun'an about sa among mga lessons sa
different subjects especially sa ABM daghan pud kg natun'an about sa
accounting then naa pud koy mga achievements ug honor student pud ko, then
akong adviser but'an sad kaayo then Ang nga teachers nice kaayo sila the way
mag tudlo sa amo'a ug ang communication namo as student and teacher okay ra
ug dali ra pud me maka come up sa mga lessons then dili lang pud puro
academics akong na learn, naka learn pud kog mga values ug daghan sad kog
natun' an about sa Catholic na religion, kay since naga perform man silag
novena diba? so nakakita ko unsa sila magg simba ug Kung kinsa ilang gina
Catholic school? Unsay mga emotions nimo Sir?
Interviewee: At first medyo hadlok ko kay ako ray isa muslim sa Saint Peter's but
since after few days naa nakoy nakaila na mga new friends especially akong
94
jud nakog classroom then after ato happy sad ko at the same time kay daghan
ko nila ba as one. (L10)
Interviewer: Gi treat ka nila'g equal Sir na as in equal?
skwela diri ug na feel nimo na but'an imong mga amigo aside from that sir, unsa
pay mga struggles or difficulties na, na encounter or na experience nimo sa pag
skwela as a muslim student?
Interviewee: Aside from that at first naay mga misunderstandings na nahitabo sa
akong mga classmates. (L12)
classmates sir?
Interviewee: Ang na misunderstand namo kay about sa among mga beliefs mga
tinoohan then aside from that kanang lahi man pud gud gi dak'an ug lahi pud sila
kung unsa ilang gi dak'an so bale ang attitude pud ba kay naay differences but
pagka dugay na accept ra pud nako sila then accept pud ko nila Kung unsa man
ko if unsa pud sila. (L13)
Interviewer: Katong mga struggles ug misunderstandings sir naa pabay mas lala
ato sir or kato na jud ang pinakalala na difficult experience nimo as a muslim
student?
Interviewer: Sir, mao lang jud ba or wala nay lain pa?
sa ako'a bawal man gud sa ako'a Kay baboy Kay since Muslim man ko then mao
gud nay sagol pork pero okay lang ma pud say ako'a accept man pud nako since
naa man ko sa Catholic school. (L16).
95
pangutana sir naa man diba kay negative experience so naa jud pud nay mga
positive na imong ma experience so unsa man ni sila based sa imong experience
topic sa classroom then morals pud. (L17)
Interviewer: Nindot Jud siya sir nu, Sir unsa Jud tong pinaka the best positive
treat ko nila as one, then equal lang, then as'in gi respeto jud ko nila. (L18)
Interviewer: Dili ka nila gina treat ug lain sir mao na imong gina pasabot? Kato
Ug gi unsa to
experience. (L20)
Interviewer: Gi unsa man nimo pag accept ug pag understand say mga
sitwasyon sir?

96
examples ato sir, unsa mga life lesson nimo?
Interviewee: For example atong difficulties na akong na experience, diba Muslim
man koang mga misunderstandings na nahitabo say akong classmates ug
katong sa Christmas Party na usually ang ilang gina handa kay pork so in that
situation murg na tun'an nako na mu dawat ug mu accept and savton na lang
ang sitwasyon since naa man ko say Catholic na skwelahan ako na lang pud
siguro Ang mu adjust, subton ug dawaton sila Kung unsa man ilang mga
tinuohan ilang mga beliefs. So mao to natun'an na pud nako na makipaghalubilo
and such ug mga na tun'an nak unsa'on makipag communicate sa ilaha since dili
me parehas ug tinuohan. (L22)
Interviewer: Aside ato sir naa pa ba kay laing na tun'an sanpag skwela nimo
based say imong experiences?
Interviewee: So mao to since kabalo nako makipag halobilo sa akong mga
classmates na dili nako ka pareha ug religion daghan kog nahibal'an, na tun'an g
na discover sa ilaha since dili me parehas ug religion. Like the way sila manimba
ug the way pud me maninba since kami lahi mannjud me manimba, ug lahi
among panamit kapag maninba me naa jud me proper look ug did to na tun'an
Interviewer: kalawat ang tawag ato sir.
Interviewee: Oo, kato siya, katong kalawat. So Kato siya bag'o sad to sa ako ug
wala ko kabalo para asa to ug unsay purpose atong pagkaon nila ato, then
sila about sa ilang religion ug Kung unsa ilang gina tuohan kinda ilang prophet.
Ug specially pud say among C.L na ang among subject teacher na si sir Peladra,
dagahan pud kog na hibal'an about Kay sir say iyang mga lessons ma apply
nako sa akong life, ug siguro na apply sad to nako sa akong g mga surroundings
na sabton ang mga Catholics like sa akong mga classmates since dili man me ka
pareha, bale gina sabot pud ko nila ba kung unsa among gina tuohan kumbaga
naa lang me respeto ba. (L24)
Interviewer: Nindot pud siya na mga learnings in life sir nu, so sir mu balik ta
atong pag cope up nimo sa imong problem, sir naa pa ambay nag tabang ssa
problems and difficulties na along na experience and number one of that is my
years na didto nag college then ang isa kay 2 years na nag skwela ug senior
high then mao to gina tagaan pud ko nila'g mga good advice ug strategies na
pwede nila matabangan sa ako'a. (L25)
advises kung unsa ang dapat buhaton for example, oag mag mass or novena
since naa man gud ko sa Catholic na skwelahan ug since Catholic man si Myca
Interviewee: Si My mca best friend nako na sita then since pagaka grade nine
classmate na me then friend gihapon me pagka grade 10 until grade 11 since
together, so mao to stay pud akong ma duolan if mangtana about sa mga
ginabuhat sa katoliko Kay since Catholic man sya ug gina tagaana pud ko niyag
advice or tips para ma overcome nako ang mga challenges and difficulties na
akong na experience. (L28)
Interviewer: Sir if tagaana pa kag pagkakataon sir naa pa ba kay laing ma share
Interviewee: At first dako jud akong expectations before ko mo sulod aning
Catholic school. But'an kaayo ang mga studyante ug gi accept ko nila kung unsa
ko then mga respetado sad pero katong some of may expectations na tuman
man sad since akong mga friends sa senior high kay gikan man kasagaran sa
public syempre dawat ko nila. Then ato naa lang koy na obserbahan before man

98
high kay since diba dugay naman na sila diri then abi nakog but'an sila pero
some of them lang naa man poy mga buotan kay mostly man gud laing man gud
words gina kusig pa jud nilag storya then naka huna-huna ko (abi ba nakog
Catholic no diri?) pero man sad uban studyante mga but'an ug respetado. Kaato
lang Jud sita based lang to say akong observation ug experience sa pag skwela
nako sa Saint Peter's. (L29)
Let meshake
your hands sir, it is truly an honor sir na nakuha ka namo as point of view sir,
unta tinood jud tong gipang ingon nimo si maraming maraming salamat sir. Buy
the way naa pa ba Kay laing maingon sir?
Interviewee: Thank you put sa pag interview Kat na lingaw pud ko then na
express pud nako akong inner self. Naa lang koy iingon, I just want to clarify
the may makipag story sa ilang visitors. (L30)
Interviewer: Okay lang man to sir gina respect man namo imong mga tubag sir.
Once again sir maraming- maraming salamat Sir thank you so much. And that's
all.

In-depth Interview of the Participant 2
Preliminaries

Interviewer: So Goodafternoon maam, so first of all unsa na language inyong

Interviewer: Sge, ako diay si Christine Ivy D. Ovas the researcher.
Note Taker: Ako diay si Keane Fernandez the researcher.
Recorder: Ako diay si Jean Mikha Repollo the researcher.
among research voluntary jud kaayo imong partisipasyon sa amo and pwde pd
So ihatag nako
So mao ni among interview guide questions sa among qualitative study.
Interviewee: So first of all te kay gusto nako mu thank you sainyo kay ako inyung
name is Nafeesa H. Aripin I am a Grade 10 student now and under ko ni sir
Albert Cuenco and I am 15 yrs old, So mao lang toh siya te.
Interviewer: Okay Nafeesa Aripin the purpose of this guide questions is to
gathered detailed information to be use as the reference sample and support of
our study so I hope this questions may actually maka answer saimo and i-respect

Interviewer: Okay Nafeesa, what were your reasons why you choose to enroll at
catholic school?
Interviewee: So my reasons why I studied or chose to study at Saint Peter’s
College of Toril kay daghan kaayo siya te, first iss kanang planado na jud siya
since I was elementary , Grade 6 giingnan na jud ko saakong lola na sa Saint
Peter nako magstudy so pagka Grade 6 na nako ipabalhin nako kay naa man

100
toril na eskwelahan tapos sa maagihan man gud nako siya everyday so murag
ganahan pd ko kay murag luag.x sya and murag comfy. (L1)
baya nagaprovide and same lang man japon na maka learn man japon ka. So
that’s it. (L4)
Interviewer: So apart from SPCT school, is there another school you wanted to
enroll with?
Interviewee: Yes, akong family ofcourse kay sila man nagplano and then akoang
Interviewee: Opo didto jud mei nakapuyo naa mei balay didto. (L6)
Interviewer: Didto pud ka nagschool?
Interviewee: Yes sa Catholic school pud siya sa Immaculate Heart of Mary of
Academy. (L7)
Interviewer: So never jud ka nakasulod ug kanang Muslim School?
Interviewee: Nakasulod nako, syempre kanang Saturday and Sunday naa man
mei school na Madrasah Madrasah man sa amoa if Muslim na school. Naga
study ko at the same time kay elementary paman ko ato so dili paman busy ang
life so murag naga multitask ko like English and Madrasah so kaya paman nako
highschool karun. (L8)
Interviewer: So ngano naga study kag english na language if ang language man
Interviewee: Of course bisag religion nako is Islam tapos ngano naga study ko at
the same time ug english kay kinahanglan paman gud pud nato nah siya saatong
life kay what if ma ignorante tah, what if insultohon tah sa mga tao like maliiton
tah becausee murag wala tay pinag-aralan like in.ana gud kay kabalo bayabka

101
aralan murag in.ana gud. Pero it doesn’t mean man pud na disrespecting na siya
sa among religion of course, kay at the same time gipag-aralan man pud nako
akong religion so wala japun siya’y makagaba ba or something. (L9)
Interviewer: Pati ang own religion nimo kabalo ka? Mu speak?
Interviewee: Yes ofcourse. (L10)
Interviewer: Ok, so were there any apprehensions in your enrolling in a catholic
school?
Interviewee: Naa jud ofcourse, naa kanang murag mahadlok ko first day palang
mga problems in terms of school. (L11)
Interviewer: So saimong mga expectations na, na in.ana? Nahitabo na ba na o
wala?
Interviewee: So far wala man.. kay kabalo man pud sila mulugar sa ilang mga
self like kabalo sila mu respeto sa akong religion. (L12)
Interviewer: Were there any other options have you entertained apart from
SPCT?
Interviewee: Yes, kanang mostly sa downtown gud pero dili man musugot akong
lola kay highschool paako ba like gr. 7 bata-bata pa siya or gr. 6 ba ko ato
nagstart kay murag dili pako sugtan na magdowntown2x. (L13)
Interviewer: So ngano gichoose jud nimo ang SPCT? Aside sa malapit sainyo,
and kaya sa financial problems saimong lola, and aside sa na influence ka
saimong mga friends.
Interviewee: Of course kay lahi man jud kanang gikan kag Mati tas magstudy ka
sa Davao gusto pud nako kanang maka kita ug new environment. (L14)
Interviewer: So since daghan man mga non-catholics, bayot, mga tomboys sa
Interviewee: Yes dali ra jud kaayo saakoa like daghan gane kaayo nga students
ug mga bayot like in.ana gud like close kaayo ko sa ilaha syempre kay friendly
man gud kaayo ko. (L15)
Interviewer: What were your experiences while studying at Catholic school?
102
Interviewee: First of all, daghan kaayo ko mga experiences of studying at
nako ni grow ko didtoa na year level it is because murag na identify nako akong
every grading system like Gr. 7,8,9 every 1 st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grading like ana
na kaayo nako siya like in.ana gud te. (L16)
Interviewer: So in terms ug kanang, achieve mga goals sa studies unsa mga
Interviewee: So ang sayon jud sa akoa is kanang, ay.. wala man guro sayon
magstudy and then if kapag naay mga PT’s kay some of the members kay walay
mag entertain ug other people like in.ana. (L17)
anang activities?
Interviewee: Sa akoang life te is of course is dapat naa man jud naga pa
mga in.ana gud. So mao toh. (L18)
Interviewer: So how does it feel as a Muslim student to study in a Catholic
school?
Interviewee: It feels so happy and sad at the same time kanang happy kay
interested sila tapos kanang gina respeto nila akong religion like gina treat ko nila
ug fairly like makasabot sila pero sad siya at the same time kay naa man guy
uban students sa saint peter like ginayaga yagaan gud nila like they don’t know
how to like ilugar ilahang self kanang for example mga words namo like pataka
lang silag shout-shout without even knowing the reason kung unsay ilang gina
ingon so murag sakit siya sa akong part like mao nah sad then kanang naay

(L20)
Interviewer: So unsa imong ginabuhat ana kapag maka encounter kag in.ana?
Interviewee: In the way gud na ginabadlong nako sila na ‘stop doing it’ kay it’s not
good like ‘murag ma gabaan mo,’ kay syempre dili baya mo kabalo sa meaning
syempre mga dako na sila they know what’s right and wrong. (L21)
Interviewer: So what are your difficulties/struggles have you experienced as a
muslim student?
Interviewee: So the difficulties / struggles I’ve experienced as a Muslim student
teachers ana2x gud. (L22)
Interviewer: So in all difficulties you've had, which is the most difficult one?
assignments and projects like nagapatabang pata saatong mga parents karun
Interviewer: So nabanggit mo saakin na dati sayo ka matulog then karon
experience na nimo mapuyat?
Interviewee: Yes experience na nako. (L26)
Interviewer: So question nako is paano mo siya ito na cope up na parang
nasanayan?
from the start lisod jud siya kay from previous gud nimo sayo ka matulog so lisod
104
tung first day palang nako dili pako sanay so natulog ko early and then murag dili
mn jud nah mahuman na magdugay kag tulog so mao toh like nasanayan na
nako siya kay sge nalang man hatag mga teachers ug mgga projects so
everyday nalang toh. (L27)
Interviewer: What were the positive experiences you have when you studied at
catholic school?
student ma aim pa nako ang high honor like in.ana gud. Tapos naga study jud ko
ug tarong. (L28)
Interviewer: So until now you're still an honor student? And willing to become a
high honor?
Interviewee: Yes kinsa man dili gud gusto ana. (L29)
Interviewer: Ngano gusto man jud kaayu nimo?
Interviewee: Since wala man jud kay buhaton sa balay atleast man lang kana
Interviewer: Okay so paano mo ito gina cope up mga challenges saimong life?
Interviewee: Easy lang na kaayo te first kay never give up, ayaw ka surrennder,
always pray to God ug ayaw ka wala ug pag-asa. (L31)
Interviewer: So the God you've mentioned is your Allah right?
Interviewee: Yes te. (L32)
Interviewer: So since there's no statue of Allah that you've prayed but an image
of our Lord Jesus Christ do you still pray for it?
Interviewee: Of course not te, because we had different Gods and we're not the
same in religion but still I respect that because we had our respective Gods to
pray but never respond to one of your rites in a mass. (L33)
Interviewer: So in all of your challenges and struggles you've experienced only
yourself you could help solve or overcome to your problem, were there a
significant person helped you to overcome your challenges and difficulties?
Interviewee: Yes of course first of all is My God, my parents, my friends that are
the ones who helped me overcome my difficulties also teachers and staff i
guidance office because I often get called there *laughs* so that's it te. (L34)
105
Interviewer: So how did those challenges helped you to become a better person?
Interviewee: Of course like sacrifice everytime in your life and always be happy
and i-surround ang mga tao na nagapalipay saimong life and iwasan ang pag
overthinking especially negative and be positive so na ma solve imong problem
easily and to become a better person also, ana. (L35)
Interviewer: So what were some insights/lessons you have learned from those
experiences?
Interviewee: Like never give up, never surrender and always find a way to solve
your problem and have trust to your God and to our Allah and learn how to say
no so that you can get confused, mao lang. (L36)

Interviewer: So If given a chance, what are the things you want to share to
others for non-catholics, catholics, and fellow muslims.
Interviewee: So of course I want to share them our differences between an Islam
and a Catholic because some non-catholic students in SPCT gusto malaman ang
Madrasah language na Arabic mao ang mas lisod jud itudlo saila which is gina
study pa nako. (L37)
Interviewer: So I want to ask you if when do you go to church?
Interviewee: Every friday we go to church, but since in here we had classes that
day, so I can't attend but still we can pray 5 prayers of our Islam religion I forgot
of those everyday. (L38)
Interviewer: Ah okay since here in catholic in Davao, we attend mass or go to
church every sunday so do you attend also?
Interviewee: No ofcourse not kay dili man ko Catholic. (L39)
Interviewer: Ah okay, so Thank you so much of letting us interview you of such
things.
Interviewee: Thank you also for choosing me as your participant and you're
welcome maam. (L40)

Interviewer: So ma’am what language do you prefer to speak?
Interviewee: Sagol lang pwede bisaya , English ,Tagalog
Interviewer: Ok ma’am

Interviewer: Let’s start this is our first question. What were your reason why you
choose to enroll in a catholic school?
Interviewee: The reason why I choose to enroll in a catholic school it is because
Interviewer: Aside from that Did someone or something influence you to make
your decision ma’am ?
(L2).
Interviewer: Were there any apprehensions in your enrolling I a Catholic school?

107
Interviewee: For me , there are apprehensions while I’m enrolling at a catholic
school kay basin ma OP ko sa others because we have different religion (L3) .
Interviewer. Aside sa ma OP naa Kay lain reason or apprehensions about ana
ma’am?
Interviewee: Yes naa pa kay basin dili nila masabtan akong religion ,like bullying
pero wala man sad nahitabo sa akoa (L4).
Interviewer: Were there any options you have intertained about SPCT ?
Interviewer: Why you choose SPCT ?
Interviewee: I choose SPCT kay ilang rules dili strict like for example catholic ka
ing’ana pud imong buhaton so mao to akong gi choose kay gina respeto pud nila
ug naay year equality saamoa pagtanggap nila sa other religion (L6).
Interviewer: What were your experiences while studying at a catholic school?
Interviewee: I have a lot of experiences while studying at a catholic school naka
Ang expectation man gud
panan’aw saimuha naka experienced kog equality then pag respect nila sa ako
(L7).
Interviewer: How Does it feel as a Muslim students to study in a catholic school ?
Interviewee: As a Muslim, na naga study sa Catholic school normal lang siya
then for me, it is unique Kay lahi baya kog religion then didto jud ko mag skwela
sa pang Catholic naa pud mi lain skwelahan (L8).
Interviewer: What were did the difficulties or struggles have you experiences as a
Muslim students ?
Interviewee: My difficulties or struggles that I have experienced as a Muslim
ang tao naay uban kabalo mo sabot naa pud uban dili then naay pud uban
Interviewer: Among those struggles what can you consider the most difficult ?
why ?

108
Interviewer: What were the positive experiences you have studying in a catholic
school?
Interviewee: My positive experiences while I’m studying in a catholic school is
Interviewer: Among those positive experiences ma'am, which one you consider
the best? Why?
Interviewee: Among those positive experiences, I consider the best is like for
example misa and then dili mi nila gina force nila na mag luhod jud og
mangalawat.
Rosario then
gipangayo niya akong side or akoang decision kung kuadto ba ko or dilo. Unya
Catholic church. Mao to respeto kaayo siya saakoa (L12).
Interviewer: Okay ma'am. How are you able to cope up with the challenges and
difficulties you have encountered?
Interviewee: To cope up the challnges and difficulties that I have encountered, is
faith to God specially to our God which is Allah. And then dili nako sila gina isip
Kay the more
na gina isip the more pud na ma depress ko, naay possible happening na ma
depress ko or like ning ana.
mga friends and saakong parents and specially to God (L13).
Interviewer: Were you able to come up with the ways to over come your
difficulties
Interviewee: Yes, I have a lot of ways na akong nakuha bantog malampasan
First is faith to God. Second
dili ko maminaw sa uban like for example dili nako ipadala akong satili na ma
down gani tungod sa uban na naga bully, like for example kanang walay
pagsabot saakong religion.
And then fourthis
Where there's a significant person who help you to
cope up with the challenges ma'am?

109
Interviewee: Yes, there are significant persons who help me to cope up with the
challenges. First is my parents they help me thru advices. And second is my
barkada or friends they help me na kanang tungod sailaha naka expirienced kog
(L15).
Interviewer: How did those challenges helps you to become a better person?
Interviewee: This challenges help me to become a better person, nakita nako
What are some insights or lessons you have learned
from those expiriences?
Interviewee: I have lot of insights or lessons that I have learned from those
expiriences. First is accpetance. Second is respect. Third is never give up. And
struggles?
Interviewee: Gi accept nako ni by katong kabalo man ko na each human jud or
kada tao na naka encounter jud og struggles, walay tao na walay naka
encounter.
mao to nahibal-an nako na ginatan-aw man jud nako kung makaya ni or dili. Mao
to wala pud ko ni give up then wala ko nagpadala sa uban tao na naga bullu
sakoa (L18)
Interviewer: Okay ma'am. If you have given a chance, what are the things you
want to share in others?
Interviewee: So if I have given a chance, the things that I want to share to others
is daghan. First is ayaw mog kahadlok na muskwela sa Catholic school kung lahi
inyong religion kay kabalo ta na we have a different religion pero isa lang ang
atong ginoo. And then second is kung dili ta nila respetuhon ato nalang pud
makambyo. And then third is ayaw mog paapekto sa others, for example bullying
ayaw mog paapekto kay kabalo mo pag maapektohan mo maapektohan pud
inyong grades tungod pud ana murag nabagsak pud inyong future na unsa

110
inyong ganahan. That's why never give up lang jud and then dili magpadala sa
lain mao lang to (L19).
Interviewer: Okay ma'am, thank you so much! You will not enquer any financial
cause due to your participation in this study. As a thank you for participating in
this study you will recieve a gift certificate as well as intangible benefit for sharing
your story ma'am. Thank you so much.
Interviewee: Thank you also for this opportunity (L20).

In-depth interview of Participant 4

Preliminaries

Interviewer: So good afternoon, I am Tiamson the researcher and this is Miranda

the researcher. We are here to interview you for our research paper, entitled: A
New Place For Me: The Lived Experience of Muslim students at the Catholic
school. The purpose of this interview guide questions is to gather detailed
information to be use as the reference sample in support to the study. Through
this guide questions you will be able to provide valuable information about your
life experiences as Muslim students at the Catholic atholic school and by that the
study would become more reliable and effective.
Interviewer: So sir, what is the language we must use? For you to be
comfortable.
Interviewee: Vernacular
Interviewer: So now we will proceed to our interview guide questions, so let’s
start.

Interviewer: What were your reason why you choose to enroll in a catholic
school?
Interviewer: Okay Sir, Is there any reason why you chose to enroll in a Catholic
school?
Interviewee: Kasi po, sa mga madrasa hindi sila tumatanggap ng ESC which is
Interviewer: Did someone or something influence you to make your decision sir?
Interviewee: There’s something that influences me, and that is practicality in our
home the madrasa is too far then SPCT is too near. That important thing
influence me to make that decision (L3).
Interviewer: Is there someone or something more influence you to make that
decision Sir?
pina-aral (L4).
112
Interviewer: Where there any apprehensions in your enrolling in a Catholic
School?
Interviewee: At first, when I go to Catholic School I was being intimidated (L5).
Interviewer: So unsa man ang naka intimidate sa imoha Sir?
Interviewer: So is there any apprehensions in your enrolling in a catholic school?
Aside from that.
Interviewee: Aside from that I have financial problem but apprehended me to
enroll in a catholic school like in the uniform, PE, books especially tuition. And
also has apprehended in other issue like nabagohan ako ng environment dito sa
galing?
Interviewee: Zamboanga City (L8).
Interviewer: Were there any other options you have entertained apart from
SPCT?
Interviewee: Wala akong nakitang ibang good option, kase ang pamilya namin
Interviewer: Why did you choose SPCT?
Interviewee: First of all, I said earlier that it was near to our home, Secondly, mas
malaki ang SPCT kaysa sa ibang Catholic school na ang liliit-liit, and I was
expecting that ang estudyante sa spct (L10).
Interviewer: Is there more reason why you choose SPCT? Aside from that?
Interviewee: Other that that, I think that the facilities was good enough to cater
me (L11).
Interviewer: What were your experiences while studying in a Catholic School?

Muhammad (L13).
Interviewer: What a surprise answer from you Sir. So okay Sir, next question is,
how does it feel as a Muslim student to study in a Catholic school?
Interviewee: First, I feel uncomfortable talaga yung mga ano nila mga dasal nila
pang Islam (L14).
Interviewer: So okay Sir, Aside from that sir, is there anymore feeling of being a
Catholic student studying in a Catholic School?
Interviewer: So okay Sir, next question is, what were the difficulties/ struggles
have you experience as a Muslim student?
Interviewee: At first yung sa pagkain kapag may baboy dun talaga ako
Yung other than
that is yung sa prayer at first lang yon later on na ayos din yon.
parang binigay nila saakin.
cafeteria then with my newly friends pero may dumating na mga hampas lupang
I was very
angry at that time kasi parang binabastos nila ako tapos pinalo ko sila kay Ma'am
Interviewer: How sad your answer, Aside from that Sir, is there any difficulties
and struggles as a Muslim student?

114
Example yung kay Pope John Paul
Tapos yun pero later on
English at Filipino nga ganyan. So magaling naman ako doon medyo taas taas
other from that is, yung mga donation ganyan, syempre naga donate din ako sa
Kasi parang
Interviewer: So among those struggles Sir, which can you consider the most
difficult? and why?
settings na yung with other people na wala silang alam na muslim ako. Tapos
is maayos lang yan by our mommies and daddies.
Interviewer: So okay Sir, next question Sir is, what were the positive experiences
you have in studying in a Catholic School ?
yan talaga yan natutunan ko yung mga ano nila yung mga traditions and now I
can respect their tradition.
dasal nila yung mga ganon then aside from that nagbibigay din ako ng side
parang may mutual benefits kami. Another positive is, ang SPCT ay competitive

115
outside activities, outside activites and inside actually especially the inside is,
pinakamaganda aside from the outside kasi ang sa inside marami silang
Aside from the indoor activities, which makes me
sila and nagatulungan kami parang mutual benefit. Kaya yun parang mataas
akin. They are considering sa aking situation na as a Muslim and another
positive experience is a they are being respectful to me, like katulad doon sa
mass majority of the people nirerespeto nila talaga ako and I will respect them
also (L19).
Interviewer: So okay Sir, so next question is, among those positive experiences
which one can you considere the best? and why?
I was being respected by other people and especially yung mga teachers
Kasi that is the greatest
thinking pero they can accept my ideas too (L20).
Interviewer: So okay Sir we are moving on our next question so Sir, how are you
able to cope up with the challenges and difficulties you have encountered
Interviewee: Gi handle ko sila sa pamamagitan ng letting go, like sabi nga ni
bruce lee be like water, na naga adopt ako sa lahat ng bagay dito sa spct. Yung
brutal talaga siya kasi as I said earlier that, I want to be respected then
Maganda yung
justicetism dito sa SPCT and then yung next is yung pagcope ko sa grado. Yung
sa grado ginagawa ko talaga is study, study, study, and study, kasi yun naman
talaga yung medyo may kulang sa akin yung knowledge about sa CL, kaya dun
palagi akong nababagsak.
by asking more budget from my mommy and daddy. Kaya ayun siya kaya minsan
kasi di nila ako binibigyan ng budget so kaya don, I find ways to make the money

116
in legal terms like nagabenta ako ganun. Mainly pagbebenta is the main solution
in my financial problems kaaya ayon siya (L21).
Interviewer: So what a wonderful answer coming from you Sir so lets move to
another question, were you able to come up with ways to overcome your
difficulties?
ways kasi sabi ko nga sabi ko kanina, I think like water be like water ganun
(L22).
Interviewer: So what a wonderful answer so next question sir is, were there
significant person who help you to cope with this challenges?
Interviewee: There where many people whom help me to face that challenges.
Especially my classmates yung grupo-grupo, and other people that I met here in
SPCT, that always help me emotionally ganyan (L23).
Interviewer: So Sir is there someone else?
Interviewee: Aside from that also my parents that helps me very much, like sa
ano sa mga grado mga ganun then I pass on time talaga (L24).
Interviewer: Okay Sir so next question is how did those challenges help you to
become a better person l?
Interviewee: I become more tolerant talaga, yung katulad nga sa ano yung na
foundation yun. Ganun din yung nangyare sa akin maraming sugat yung first
year dito sa SPCT, pero later on kumapal ang aking skin in terms of social
gathering yung ganyan so parang immune na ako sa kanilang ginagawa and
thats a main reason that help me to be better and great as a person (L25).
Interviewer: So what were some insights or lesson you have learn from those
experiences?
pa. Other from that is yung, being respectful sa others para ma respect ka din sa
117
Then it works it on time talaga yung mag respect ka sa others and
they will respect you (L26).
Interviewer: Okay Sir so lets go to the last question, so if you have given a
chance what are the things you want to share with others?
Interviewee: I will share the most important thing in life, is adoptivility yang
sa kanilang mga teachings ay yung being respectful magagamit nila iyan for life
yun siya. Kasi being respectful is a sign of interaction, interaction iyan siya na
para maging good kayo in both ways then there will be a happy ever after (L27).
Interviewer: So that's all Sir, great answers and nice. So Sir thank you very much
Sir sa pag participate sa among research. So our kuan sir recognition and
appreciation for you sir is you will not encounter in financial cause due to your
participation in the study and as a thank you for participating the study sir you will
receive a certificate as well as in tangible benefit for sharing your story.
Interviewee: Much delighted (L28).

INSIGHTS

From Vanessa Abe:

I learned in practical research that research is very important in our study

because it can help us and give us knowledge to know about the different

experience of every person. Conducting research is part of being scholar

139
practitioner with the skills to effect social change. I’ve also learned that research

is not easy partly, because we students has to be able to think well and work

independently, because we need to think and concentrate, not be distracted in

doing research. I have encountered some problems in doing research because

of insufficient language skills, lack of time, lack of interest and so on. In

conducting research is very difficult we need to face the challenges in our

research. They share their insights on how to overcome research. I’ve also

learned that in doing research paper we need to know how to formulate a

original question and proving a thesis . My learning experience that we should

not lose hope .This research will help us to gain knowledge not only in the

school but only in the work place. I probably learned more practical skills in

regards to research and utilizing research tools. I have learned many things

throughout the courses of the term including such things as how to write an

essay and how to improve in doing research.

In conducting research can also be a great opportunity to explore a topic

that is particularly interesting to you. This research process allow you to gain

knowledge or expertise on a topic of your choice and writing process will helps

you to remember of what you have learned and understand it on a deeper level.

From Rizalyn Angoy:

In our study, I learned that making a research paper is not easy. I need to

give my time on it and I need to read our research paper to know what is the flow

of our research. By conducting research entitled "A new place for me: The lived

experience of Muslim students at Catholic School" was very interesting and it is a

140
big challenge for me. Honestly to tell you I am not interested in making a

research paper because for me it's difficult to make. But after a few months with

the help of our subject teacher Mr. Felmark Fuego, I learned everything because

he is so good at teaching us even if he is very fast in speaking English. And with

the help also of our leader Mr. Nhel Manreza, he helps me on how to manage my

time and in the time when he was stressed to his members which is I'm one of

them he did not give up on our research paper. As an interviewer of our group,

I've learned that it is good to make a conversation of a non-catholic people

because you will get knowledge and learnings of their beliefs. Yes, we all know

about Muslims by our observation but for me conducting an interview is the best

thing to do because you will know their true feelings and their struggles in

studying at the Catholic school. As the researcher, I am happy to know that

Muslims who studying at the Catholic school was respected by the Catholic

students. And now I'm telling you that we should respect Muslims and their

beliefs because if we respect them they will do the same to us as Catholic

people. Yes we live here on the earth as an individual, we have different beliefs,

attitudes, religions, and cultures but we need to be as one for the sake of our

mother earth. And I've learned that patience is not about waiting, but the ability to

keep a good attitude while waiting, I as a researcher needs to be patient

because I know everything is not easy to get and not easy to make. Patience is a

way to be a good researcher.

From Keane Fernandez:

141
What I have learn in practical research is that how to find some answers

and making some efforts research makes me realized a lot of things. Because of

research, I learned how to have a better connection with my group mates in

terms of group activities. Research is the reason why I don't have any gala with

my friends Research made me learn how to investigate things out of curiosity

because of research I don’t have time to stay in our house during weekends to

do or finish our research paper.

In addition, research helps me to expand my knowledge and to be

productive at all times. Research is not only for assignments and requirements

because research can guide us for all the time that we need some answers but

sometimes research makes me feel sick and stress but I know research can help

me by handling my time research help me also by managing time. In addition,

research helps me by finding some ways and research makes me understand

what the real situation of other people is, and research makes me motivated

because it makes me understand that life is not easy life is also lots of struggles

and trials and because of research, you are responsible to your responsibilities.

And because of research, research can make you realize at all research

can make you go stronger it’s hard to find some answers in a study but research

makes you realize when you go work hard you will find the key and you will be

success.

From Nhel Alfred L. Manreza:

I am Nhel Alfred L. Manreza, a Grade 11 Senior Highschool Student of

Saint Peter's College of Toril. The word Research, a thing that you do when you

142
search to some books and internet about the definition of a certain thing and the

easiest method in gathering the data. Those thing always come up to my mind

when I heard the word Research. But when the Second Semester started all of

that idea change to some complex terms, the emergence of the Practical

Research subject in my life. Do really affect my lifestyle to some sort of a very

busy life. Where playing mobile games are not an option. That everything you do

has a purpose not just wasted to some useless things. That time management do

really matters, because without it your simple and relaxing life will turn into a

abnormal and tiring life. Suicide is an option. A thing that always come up to your

mind, the desire to escape from the stressful reality you are in. But its a no, no, I

still want to see the face of my mother and father who are proud of me after

achieving my dreams and goals in life. At first Research is an easy subject for

me. That you just need to formulate some thoughts and get some ideas to the

internet or in textbook and paraphrase it. It's simple right? The only thing that

makes it hard for me to do it, is because of my desire to not do it. Cause who

wants to do a tiring and time consuming thing. Nobody right? Basically I can do a

research alone just give me some guide and I might finish it. The only thing that

makes my life so stressful is research, the thought that everything was fine but

with the useless and uncooperative members of mine. Do really completely ruin

my lifestyle, the need to sleep at 9:00pm will change to 1:00am cause of

research. Everything your teammates have done are useless, everything they do

are nothing but just some kind trash. You couldn't rely on them. Cause they are

the type of people that really depends on someone. That thinking of "I am lucky,

143
cause my companions are smart enough" that kind of mentality that I really

despise. There might be some good characters that are really responsible

enough. But had a tiny little brain that couldn't comprehend literally. Even though

his/ her a good fellow, its nothing to the world of research (in my opinion though),

if you couldn't understand such simple terms. To sum up my insights, you couldn't

rely on anyone, you couldn't trust anybody, and promises are useless. In other

words, I prefer to solo everything than a work with unreliable members and

irresponsible leader (That's me though). Remember people do really change.

From Darryl Martin E. Miranda:

I am Darryl Martin E. Miranda, Student at Saint Peter's College of Toril and

a Senior High School Student grade eleven When the second semester started

thinking that what if I failed to pass this second semester, what if I can't catch up

easily for this semester, what f the teachers are so strict. For this subject which is

the Practical Research and as for the subject teacher Mr. Felmark Fuego. My

first impression that comes up into my mind is " this subject its look hard for me

because as we observe that some of. My friends. In grade 12 or the defense of

grade twelve I felt their nervous and struggles to defend their paper and when I

first saw what is really research is and the thickness of the paper, I was so shock

and nervous to start a lesson for the practical research subject. When Sir Fuego

entered to our class I am so scared for his subject, and i can't talk because I've

been focusing to listen to Sir Fuego.

144
Sir Fuego is a good and cool teacher he teaches as very well, sir teaches

as Our research method is qualitative which is our group will collect and analyze

the information that we gathered. For my group mates we have been so far for

our research, as if we have been in quarreling for our research we have been

have different struggles on how we handle it as a group. Then as for me, I put on

my mind that I can pass this research and on this subject, I have learned a lot,

like the unity as a group and like what sir Fuego teaches as on this practical

research.

And I have more struggles in my life when this subject was come, when

the research started I’m so. Nervous because its look harder, and sometimes I

have no money to print some file regarding of our research, and my mom was

mad because I did sleep properly because of prepare and working some

important research, but my mom understand me because she concern of my

grade if I get low grades that’s it.

From Christine Ivy D. Ovas:

I have learned in this research is that qualitative research was not that

quite hard to do and to perform confidential tasks on your own or with the group.

For the last 4 years of studying in Saint Peter's College of Toril, Science

Investigatory Project or SIP was the study I've been experienced so hard and

confused I was not been able to participate well. Because some of my members

in the group are good in it, or sometimes had the brightest ideas to conduct our

experiment research.

145
First thing that come up in my mind is I'm having a nervous feeling and

lack of confidence to do this kind of research yes I know that Phenomenology is

an experience study of research but I thought it will just as the same as the SIP.

But I was wrong though, because practical research had two values which is

qualitative and quantity research both of them will be used to other types of

researches like phenomenology, ethical, history, and grounded theory of

research. But our teacher of the practical research Mr. Felmark Fuego let us

chose of what kind of research we're going to conduct. And we chose

Phenomenology and experience research about a certain experiences of each

people we're going to ask and interview with it. So from the start It was kinda

hard for me to get adjusted but I'm trying my best to get over with it and get the

best of it, for the sake of the grades that I'm chasing on it I participated and

helped mostly our leader to get our research in a right format and well presented

to other presenters especially to our practical research teacher Mr. Fuego.

My insights on this research study we've been conducting is that you

cannot escape yourself of not doing on it because your grades are rely on it also

to other members that is working hard to make this paper of ours presentable

and interested by many and would get a new knowledge and dicovered well. This

had been hard for them but some are nor for me, this a first time I get to

understand of how to do some parts of the study what are the important parts

that needed to be focused to and widened our thoughts. This is the research

study whom sometimes I get easy with, as long as our leader is there to explain

me well how and I get to understand it easily. But I still get some mistakes but

146
that's okay, because learning from my mistakes will make it perfect and now I get

confident of having my own interview to our participant I get to be their voice and

I deliver it well that's when I get my confidence even my daddy was proud of me

of doing it well. So that's my learnings/insights in this research study.

From Christine Anne S. Parcon:

As a Student at Saint Peter's College of Toril and a Senior High School

Student grade eleven I, Christine Anne S. Parcon. When the second semester

started, I wonder that it was just so easy for me. But it seems that I was wrong

because I felt frustrated and nervous about what my grades would be, I started

thinking that what if I failed to pass this second semester, what if I can't catch up

easily for this semester, what if the teachers are so strict. These entire thoughts

can be meant to be true and yes, some of this really happened. For this subject

which is the Practical Research and as for the subject teacher Mr. Felmark

Fuego. My first impression that comes up into my mind is " oh my this subject

must be hard for me because as we observe at the A.V.R for the witnessing

the defense of grade twelve I felt their nervous and struggles to defend their

paper and when I first saw what is really research is and the thickness of

the paper, I was so shock and nervous to start a lesson for the practical

research subject.

When Sir Fuego entered to our room it was completely silent because my

classmates felt what I also feel which is the nervousness and also I am so

scared for his subject, and as the proper lesson is been started I felt so nervous

147
and can't talk because I've been focusing to listen to Sir Fuego. Sir Fuego is

really a good teacher he teaches as very well, sir teaches as on how to construct

and create a good paper. Our research method is qualitative which is our group

will collect and analyze the information that we gathered. For my group mates,

we've been so far for our research, like we have been in quarreling for the

research we have been having different struggles on how we handle it as a

group. But then as for me, I put on my mind that I can pass this research and on

this subject, I have learned a lot, like the unity as a group and like what sir Fuego

teaches as on this practical research.

From Jean Mikha Repollo:

I have learned that Catholic is not only for a catholic student that has a

catholic religion. In addition, in conducting our research, I learned a lot.

Especially during those times that we asked some Muslim student that are

studying in a Catholic School. In addition, I would like to say thank you to our

teacher for teaching us that research is not easy. It takes time, patience and

enough knowledge to conduct a research.

Few more days before we will be having our next defense and I will do my

best for the success of our group. I also learned that research is an ethical and

systematic because it undergoes understanding, process or systematic

procedures. I have also the knowledge that before we conduct a research, we

should prepare the questions that is needed to be ask and we should follow the

rules in conducting a research.

148
Moreover, I am thankful that our father god has given me a full strength

and knowledge in everything I do. I promise that what I know and what I learned

at this school year; I will apply this to my college life and share this to others so

that they also have the knowledge in conducting a right and proper paper in

research.

From Cristel Salvalosa:

Conducting our study is not easy. At first, I don't know how to conduct our

reseach study, but after few days and the help of the explaination of our practical

research teacher, I know how to conduct it. It is hard for me because I'm not good

in speaking in english language. I have a task in our group, it's so hard for me. I

sleep 12 or 1 am because I search a article all about our research topic. Our

research topic is "Muslim student studying in Catholic school". And this topic is

rare.

We need a Muslim students that studied in Saint Peter's College of Toril. It

is hard to find a Muslim student and some of them are not interested in our

research, but there's a 3 Muslim students participated in our research. It is hard

for me to interview them, to ask questions but in the end I am happy because I

learned from them and I know what are their struggles while studying in Catholic

school. All in all, beimg a research student is great, even though it comes with it's

struggles. Whatever I am researching, I get out there and I get great expirienced

and have fun with it.

149
Sir Fuego tell us that we have a defense after we finish our research

study. I feel nervous that time because I don't know how to do it and their is a

question and I think I can't answer it. The day that we have our defense, I'm so

nervous in that day, I think that I can't answer the questions of Sir Fuego, but

thank God I answer some of the questions of Sir Fuego. And our defense on that

day was successful.

From Matthew Kyle Timason:

Conducting our research study is a hard thing to do. It is an activity of

practical research subject in our school that makes the students stressful. But

research is really important to know things about our society. During our study, I

encounter different kinds of problems. Thier was a time that I don't have internet

connection when the time internet connection is needed to our research study.

Thier was a time that I don't have money to pay for our research study. I

experience being stress during our research study because sometimes I sleep at

midnight just to finish my job for the research. And sometimes I didn't work my

part because of my busy schedules, of course because of sort of things that I

should manage first before our research study. Becsuse of research, I didn't work

my other responsibility. That was the time that I can't handle my time and to

balance my responsibilities.

I also encounter different experiences, like me with my groupmates

enjoyed so much of conducting our research despite of the struggles, we really

enjoy cause it is a once in a blue moon to happen or it is seldom to do that thing

150
like conducting research. We experience enjoying the research but sometimes

we also experience fighting each other because sometimes we didn't understand

each other in terms of our research.

There so many things that I've learned during our research study. I've

learned how to think in advance. I've learned how to be teamwork with my group

mates, I've learned how to manage my time, I've learned how to share my

thoughts, and I've learned how to listen of thier thoughts and ideas from my

groupmates.

I know that some students hate practical research subject, but it is

important to know things for the good of our society. I know in the end of the day

we will miss each other, specially our bonding times, we will miss joyful times,

and also the saddest times during the research that we encounter together. Thats

why I will take and pleasure my times with them, with my groupmates.
