ATA 80-00 ENGINE STARTING

INTRODUCTION
Three separate systems are required to ensure that the LF 502 engine
will start satisfactorily.
• Provision is made for the compressor (N2) and its associated
turbines to be rotated up to a speed at which adequate air passes
into the combustion system to mix with fuel from the burners.
• Provision is made for ignition of the air-fuel mixture in the
combustion system.
The engine anti-ice system is operated automatically to off load the
compressor thereby enabling the compressor to spool up more quickly
and to improve the surge characteristics of the engine.
During engine starting all three systems operate simultaneously;
however, provision is made to:
- Motor the engine with the starter without the ignition system being
energized.
The ignition system is only operating to facilitate in-flight starting.
The functioning of the three systems is coordinated during an engine
start cycle and their operation is automatically controlled after initiation by
an electrical circuit.

The ENG 1 and 4 GEN O/R INHIBIT relays are two and four-pole change

driven generators during a starting sequence.
On aircraft 004-299,301-999
A "soft start" capability is employed, using a resistor, contactor and a one
second time delay relay, to reduce the electrical and mechanical stress
which occurs during the starting cycle. This allows the starter to take up
the backlash in the engine gearbox before cranking the engine.

rotate. The sprags in the freewheel disengage, releasing the shaft
assembly, and the motor stops.
COMPONENTS
STARTER MOTOR
The motor is a four pole, eight brush, series wound unit consisting of a
stator field and yoke assembly and a wound armature assembly which is
mounted on a ball bearings. The armature is secured in the commutator
and bearing by a shaft nut and is splined into the inner shaft of the
freewheel mechanism at the drive end.
The motor supply terminals are mounted in a moulded terminal block on
the commutator end housing, adjacent to the brushgear, which is
enclosed by a removable cover.
A sealed inner housing, between the stator and yoke assembly and the
drive end housing, separates the motor components from the oil
lubricated freewheel components. The enclosed chamber is vented
through a ball valve contained in a relief bolt assembly and the oil level is
checked by means of a dipstick integral with the oil filler bolt in the drive
end housing.
The freewheel mechanism consists of a housing containing a bearing
mounted shaft assembly, which carries a sprag type freewheel and is
spline coupled to the drive end of the armature shaft. The freewheel
permits rotation of the starter motor drive shaft independently of the
armature in the counter clockwise direction, viewed on the drive end. A
thrower disc on the freewheel housing distributes the oil during operation
and radial slots and drillings ensure adequate lubrication of the bearings
and sprag clutch.
With the DC supply connected across the terminals the motor runs in the
counter-clockwise direction, viewed on the drive end. The sprags in the
freewheel engage and the drive is transmitted through the freewheel
housing and drive shaft to turn the engine.
When the engine is running and the starter motor is de-energized the
drive shaft and freewheel housing, driven by the engine, continue to

VOLTAGE MONITOR/AMPLIFIER
The voltage monitor/amplifier is a printed circuit board (PCB) containing a
regulated input supply, comparator, time delay and transistor mounted
together with a 4-way terminal block immediately adjacent to the starter
contactors. With a voltage at the starter terminals, the PCB input section
will smooth out any electrical surges and spikes and limit the voltage
reaching the comparator to 3v. If the input voltage is above 0.65v for
more than 1 second a signal is routed via the time delay and transistor to
light the STARTER OPERATING annunciator.
The signal to the STARTER OPERATING annunciator is also routed via
the starter operating indicator relay to each engines individual
maintenance dolls eye (Ref. AMM 31-35-00, page block 1) to give a
latched white fault indication.

SOFT START RESISTOR

The soft start resistor consists of a 0.14 ohm nickel/chromium element
that generates 5.6 kW of electrical heat during a 28V d.c. start and 9.3
kW of heat during a cold 36V d.c. start. The resistor, located in the
forward cargo compartment, is energized during the first second of each
start cycle and limits the starter motor current to approximately 200
amperes for a 28V d.c. start, and approximately 257 amperes for a cold
36V d.c. start. The resistor is common to each engine start circuit.
On aircraft 001,316-999
If the soft start resistor is allowed to remain energized during start circuit
fault conditions, indicated by the STARTER OPERATING annunciator
remaining on with the START MASTER switch set to ON, the soft start
resistor will overheat, leading to smoke and fume emissions.
