CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter consist of Background of the Study, Problem of the Study,

Objective of the Study, Scope and Limitation, Significance of the Study, and

Definition of Key Terms.

1.1 Background of the Study


Siahaan (2007:1) said that Language is a unique human inheritance that

plays the very important role in human’s life, such as thinking, communicating

ideas, and negotiating with the others. We use language to communicate with

other people. Without language we cannot convey or express our feeling and

ideas.
English is one of kinds of language. English is important language because

English become international language. Thus, English has to be more widely

developed and used in everyday lives. Considering the importance of English the

Indonesian government eventually decides to make English as a compulsory

subject at secondary school level. In this case, the English is taught as a foreign

language. To succeed in learning English as foreign language, English language

learners have to be capable of all the language skills: listening, reading, speaking,

and writing.
According to nunan (2003:88) Writing is important skill which must be

learnt beside speaking, reading and listening. Writing is The physical act of

committing words or ideas to some medium, whether it is hieroglyphics inked

onto parchment or an e-mail message typed into a computer. On the other hand,

writing is the mental work of inventing ideas, thinking about how to express

them, and organizing them into statements and paragraph that will be clear to a

reader.
Writing skill is very useful for us to make writing. Writing is one of

productive skills. Writing is development of expressing language by using letters.

And also, writing is the representation of language in textual medium through

the use of set of sign or symbol. By writing we able to express our feeling and

ideas. And sometimes it is used to describe or retell something in our mind or that

we see. The Writing skill helps the students to comprehend, become fluency and

creative to compose writing. If we have good writing skill we can write text well.
But when teaching and learning of writing, most the students are not

enthusiastic and often feel bored. Because in teaching and learning process, The

teacher is not creative. The teacher never give something new to students, he/she

never use media and just focus on student’s handbook. And also the teacher

convey the material with the same way, he/she never use new method to convey

the material. Usually, The teacher just ask to the students to tell something, for

example tell about student’s experience. So, the students feel bored. Because they

never get something new. And it makes the students lazy to study. Beside that,

when the teacher ask to students to make writing, The students do not know what

they must write. Because the students have limited idea to make writing.
Students need some media in teaching learning process . The role of media

is important in every human activity. To teach writing, the teacher has to use

media. It is used to make teaching learning process more effective and more

interesting.
In order that students do not feel bored in teaching learning process, the

researcher tries to use a media. And the media is sequence picture. Sequence

picture is a series of photographs dealing with one subject. It may tell a story,

present an event and describe a scene reveal a person, or show how to do

something. This media will be useful to students to make writing. According to

Wright (1989:201) Cartoon strips and instruction strips of pictures is potentially

useful. Experience will show the teacher which strips are the most useful. The

strips can be kept as they are and used to contextualize a story or description of a

process. First all of the teacher can ask question to help the students grasp the

meaning of the strip. Intermediate and advanced students can discuss technique of

the cartoonist in his or her representation of the people and setting and the

relationship between drawing and the words.


By using this media, the researcher hopes the students do not feel bored

any more and Students more interested to study. Because the pictures make the

subject more interesting. Beside that, by using pictures the students can improve

their ideas to make writing. The pictures can stimulate student’s idea to make

writing.
The researcher use sequence pictures in narrative text material. because it

is suitable with the media. The sequence of pictures explain event by event in

narrative text. It makes the students easier to compose writing. And also narrative

text is learnt in the eight class of junior high school.


So the researcher compose this thesis entitled ”The Use of Sequence

Pictures in Writing Narrative Text in the eighth grade of SMPN 1 LARANGAN”.

1.2 Problems of the Study


Based on the background above , the researcher formulates questions as

follow :

1. How does the teacher use sequence pictures for writing narrative text in

the eighth grade of SMPN 1 LARANGAN?


2. How is the student’s response while using sequence pictures in writing

narrative text in the eighth grade of SMPN 1 LARANGAN?


3. What are the student’s difficulties while using sequence pictures in writing

narrative text in the eighth grade of SMP N 1 LARANGAN?

1.3 Objectives of the Study


Regarding of this study, the aim of this study to find:

1. How the teacher uses of sequence pictures for writing narrative text in the

eighth grade of SMPN 1 LARANGAN.


2. The student’s responses while using sequence pictures in writing narrative

text in the eighth grade of SMPN 1 LARANGAN.


3. The student’s difficulties while using sequence pictures in writing

narrative text in the eighth grade of SMPN 1 LARANGAN

1.4 Scope and Limitation


The scope of this study is using sequence pictures and the limitation of

this study is just focus on writing narrative text in the eight grade, second

semester and in the 2013-2014 academic year. The researcher do this research to

solve the problem that face by the students.

1.5 Significance of the Study

In conducting this study, the writer hopes that this little contribution will

be useful for those bound up with this study.

1. Theoretically:

The result of this study hopefully can give information about the teaching

writing of narrative text through sequence pictures in the eight grade

students of Junior High School 1 LARANGAN and become a reference to

other researchers who are interested in conducting similar studies.

2. Practically

a) For teacher

The result of this study is give a sketch for English teacher in teaching

writing. The teacher can solve the students’ problem to write narrative text.

Teacher can provide the media for writing narrative text so not only consist of

letter by letter but also consist of picture to make student interested and increase

their motivation.

b) For the students

it is very important because it can help them to develop and explore their

idea or their imagination by using sequence picture. Besides, by using

sequence picture student will be interested in writing activities. And also it

will build students’ motivation in writing.

c) For the readers


They will get more information and experience from this research.
d) For the university
The university will know the ability of the researcher and also will get

information from this research

1.6 Definition of Key Terms

1. Writing is express our feeling and ideas through symbol or letters. And

also it is used to describe or retell something in our mind. Writing is very

useful for us.

2. Narrative is a kind of text that tells about stories that happen in the past.

Narrative text contains about story (fiction, non fiction, tales, folktales

,fables, myths and epic) and its generic structure consists of orientation,

complication (problem) and resolution. The function of narrative text is to

amuse, entertain and to deal with actual or vicarious experience in

different ways .

3. Sequence picture is a series of photographs dealing with one subject. It

may tell a story, present an event, describe a scene, and reveal a person, or

show how to do something .
