Experiment 5: Volumetric Analysis Acid-Base Titration

I. Purpose of the Lab: The objectives of the lab are to prepare and
standardize a sodium hydroxide solution; and to use the standardized
base to determine the equivalent weight of an acid.
II. Laboratory Techniques
a. Wear your safety goggles throughout this experiment and make sure
to record all observations on the report sheet.
b. Preparation and Standardization of approximately 0.1 N NaOH
Solution:
i. Clean two burets with detergent solution and then rinse them
several times with distilled water. And after, rinse a clean 150
mL beaker with acid solution in the following manner,
ii. Than pour into the beaker approximately 5 mL of the standard
acid solution. Record the molarity of the standard acid solution
printed on the bottle.
iii. Measure out about 8 mL of 5 N NaOH solutions in a small
graduated cylinder and transfer it to a clean 500 mL
Erlenmeyer flask. Rinse the graduated cylinder with distilled
water and add the rinsing to the flask. Then add enough
distilled water to make about 400 mL of solution. Swirl the
flask for about 45 seconds to obtain a uniform solution.
iv. Use a funnel to add roughly 5 mL of the diluted base solution to
one of the burets. Repeat the process.
v. Use a different funnel to transfer the acid from the 150 mL
beaker to the buret; be careful not to mix it up with the funnel
used for the NaOH solution. Drain either to the zero mark or
close to.
vi. Rinse a 250 mL Erlenmeyer flask with distilled water. Add 20
mL of distilled water to the flask and run in acid from the buret
until the meniscus has fallen around the 10 mL graduation.
Add two drops of phenolphthalein indicator.
c. Determination of the Equivalent Weight of a Solid Acid Unknown
i. Obtain a solid acid unknown from your instructor. Using a
beam balance, prepare a sample of about 200 mg on a tared
square of weighing paper, folded so as to avoid spills.
ii. Dissolve all the acid in 20 to 30 mL of distilled water. Rinse
down any solid that has stuck to the sides of the flask with a
little distilled water from a wash bottle. Add 2 drops of
phenolphthalein. Calculate the number of equivalents and the
equivalent weight of the acid present. Repeat the titration with
a second sample of unknown, and calculate the average of your
results.
