Inspection methods

Shop Inspection (ESM) When ?


• FPI Each fan blade
– Inspection for crack when coating removed routed to shop
• Eddy current inspection New Each fan blade
– Reinforced inspection when coating removed routed to shop
– Implemented in all current validated repair
shops for Fan Blades Cu-Ni-In Thermal Spray
Reconditioning (Repair 002)

On-wing inspections
• AMM Visual inspection Updated Each fan blade removed
– Includes coating condition assessment for spalling for relube or inspection
at fan blade relube
• Ultrasonic inspection New According to SB
– Inspection for cracks on Fan Blades applicable recommendations
during fan blade relube.

AMM 72-21-02-200-801
• Provides instructions for missing coating
Before
• CIS depending on spalling location
AMM Revision (June 2017)
• Area Y removed
• Area X length decreased on convex leading edge
• Area X easier to measure
Coating rejection rate increase anticipated

Ultrasonic Technique (UT) inspection


Inspection applicable for in-service engines
• Applicable to coated blades
• Can be completed during fan blade lubrication

Inspection requirements
• Inspection kit (on the shelf equipment + specific probes)
• NDT qualified inspector
• Specific training

Ultrasonic inspection to be progressively deployed on 7B fan blades

Description
• Same Inspection method as SB 72-1024
• UT inspection for high time fan blades
using engine cycles since shop visit as a ESN with at least 1 shop visit
proxy at SB issuance date
• One time inspection (March 24th, 2017)
• No inspection for first run engines
Compliance AND
• Category 2, Impact Letter B
• Inspection on engines with more than Engine cycles in shop visit >15K
15,000 FC since last shop visit as of at SB issuance date
March 24th 2017 (March 24th, 2017)
• Compliance time 6 months ( by September
24th, 2017)
UT or ECI within 6 months

FAA & EASA AD anticipated for both SB72-1019 & SB72-1024

Ultrasonic Inspection Training


CFM provides regional training seminars
• Open to any operator or supporting facility that will perform CFM56-7B fan
blade ultrasonic inspection
• Recommended for qualified NDT inspectors
• Estimated 4 hours per training session
