GENERALIZED BESSEL EQUATION

The equation:

x 2 y′′ + x(a + 2bx r ) y′ + c + dx 2 s − b (1 − a − r ) x r + b2 x 2 r  y = 0; r , s ≠ 0

has for its general solution,

1− a − bx r   d   d 
y=x 2 e r C Z  x s
+ C Z  x s 
2 −p
 1 p s   s 
     

where

2
1  1− a 
p=+  −c
s  2 

C1 and C2 are arbitrary constants to be determined from the boundary conditions.

If d is positive, Zp and Z-p represent Jp and Yp (J-p for p ≠ integer), respectively. If d
is negative, Zp and Z-p become Ip and Kp (I-p for p ≠ integer).

Note that the second kind Bessel functions [Yn(x)] all go to -∞ as x → 0. Both J’s and Y’s
are oscillatory. As x → ∞ the period goes to 2π. Amplitudes decay as 1/ x.
