NOTE: This Internationai Test Operations Procedure (ITOP) is the result of

agreement among France, Germany. the United Kingdom. and the United States 10
April 1987. Any ratifying nation may issue supplemental testing information to
amplify or clarify these procedures, but in no case will such information con-
travene the provisions of this ITOP. Any changes to this ITOP require the ap-
proval of all ratifying nations. If a ratifying nation must deviate from a
provision of this ITOP due to constraints such as available facilities. national
regulations. instrumentation accuracies. etc .• the test methods used will be
described in the test report. However. such deviation may cause nonacceptance of
test data by other nations.

*The permissible error of measurement for instrumentation is the two-sigma value

for a normal distribution; thus, the stated errors should not be exceeded in more
than one measurement of 20.

3. REQUIRED TEST CONDITIONS.

3.1 Test Vehicle. Ensure that:

a. The test vehicle is initially inspected and lubricated to ensure that

all components function satisfactorily. The inspection usually is limited to
visual and functional inspection of the vehicle, but can be expanded to include
more details when doubt exists concerning serviceability. Record the model and
serial numbers of the vehicie and major components.

b. New vehicles have been operated for the appropriate break-in mileage.
During this operation, use the vehicle and engine speeds recommended by the
manufacturer. When necessary, adjust engine govertiors for recommended crank-
shaft speeds.

c. Each vehicle is loaded with the cargo or simulated payload it is de-

signed to carry, unless otherwise specified. Load tanks with'dummy ammunition, I

2

and load personnel carriers with weights to simulate crew. Secure loads ade-
quately to prevent shifting, and instruct the drivers concerning special hazards.

d. Maintenance and service operations have been performed to ensure that

the vehicle is operating within specifications. Give particular attention to the
engine, transmission, and-running gear.

e. If the vehicle is to be tested as a weapon system, the turret must be

tested in both the combat and travel-lock positions. The percentage of testing
in each position will be defined in the test plan.

f. Reference fuels, lubricants, and antifreeze as specified by relevant

NATO authority (after ratification) have been used. Until NATO agreement is
ratified, developer-specified petroleum, oils, lubricants (POL), and antifreeze
will be used.

g. The proper quantities of lubricants have been used.

h. Correct levels of lubricants, hydraulic fluid, coolant, etc., are ma1n-

tained throughout the test.

3.2 Test Courses. Maintain a constant severity level of the test courses as
much as possible.

3.3 Environmental Conditions.

a. If possible, conduct the test under conditions comparable to all four

seasons of the year.

b. Record meteorological data for all periods of operation.

4. TEST PROCEDURE. The-,'choice of tes t prof ile is def ined in the requirements
document.

a. Course mixture and test length.

Tracked Vehicle Categorie~:

CAT 1: Tracked vehicles that normally use roads and cross-country equally.
Examples: Main battle tanks and other vehicles required to operate under.the
same conditions.

CAT 2: Tracked vehicles that normally use roads more often. Examples:
Recovery vehicles, comma~d post vehicles, self-propelled artillery.

~: Tracked vehicles that n9rmally use roads less often. Example:

Airborne light tank.

CAT 4: Spec ial cases.

b. Course speeds. Maintain reasonable and practical speeds for the par-
ticular course conditions consistent with safety requirements.
, ~

c. Towe9."Joads. If applicable, each vehicle tows its designated towed load

for at least 50% of all test operations unless otherwise specified. Both towing
and towed vehicles carry their rated payloads 'and any allowable overload deter-
mined by special tests.

d. Maintenance and inspections~ Perform preventive (scheduled) maintenance

as prescribed in the applicable technical manual; perform corrective (unsched-
uled) maintenance as required to keep th~ vehicle operational. Observe the oper-
ator's daily checks and services to obtain a representative time to perform the
tasks. Record all maintenance-action data peFtinent to reliability, avaiiabil-
ity, and maintainability (RAM) parameters inCluding scheduled and unscheduled
maintenance time in man-hours and clock hours. Inspect the vehicle at, least once
during each 8 hours of operation for deficiencies, damage, or unusual wear.

e. Spectrometric oil analysis. When the compatibility of fuels and lubri-

cants with the test vehicle is to be evaluated, take lubricant samples during the
test for a spectrometric oil analysis~

f. Modifications. Incorporate engineering modifications as required to

eliminate causes of damag.e or undue wear to the vehicle as soon as practicable.
