Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are chemicals used extensively in industry and consumer
products, such as carpets, fabrics, food packaging, and other materials that are resistant to water, grease,
or stains. They have also been used in some firefighting foam and cookware. Because these chemicals
have so many uses, most people have been exposed to them.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) has been advised that certain bottled water
products containing spring water from Spring Hill Farm Dairy, Inc., located in Haverhill, MA, contain
PFAS chemicals at levels that DPH recommends not be consumed by people who are pregnant or
breastfeeding, or by bottle-fed infants.
Spring Hill Farm Dairy Inc.’s water has not exceeded the applicable regulatory standard and
Spring Hill Farm Dairy Inc.’s permit in Massachusetts is valid and in good standing. Spring Hill
Farm Dairy Inc. is working cooperatively with DPH and plans to install a filtration process to remove
PFAS compounds. That filtration system is expected to be operational July 24.
Although drinking water containing PFAS does not necessarily lead to health risks, out of an abundance
of caution, Spring Hill Farm Dairy Inc. and DPH recommend the following:
• Pregnant women, nursing mothers, and infants should not drink certain brands of spring water
bottled by Spring Hill Farm Dairy Inc. (see below) before July 24 when PFAS levels are
expected to be reduced.
o Use other water sources that do not contain PFAS for drinking and cooking foods that absorb
water (like pasta).
o Use formula that does not require adding water or temporarily use a different water source to
make formula.
o Visit MassDEP’s website to learn where PFAS has been tested and found in drinking water
supplies.
Information about the water source is listed on bottled water labels. The affected products are those that
list the source as “spring” water on the label. Not all Spring Hill Farm Dairy Inc. brands list spring water
as the source. Spring Hill Farm Dairy Inc. brand water that is labeled as distilled, purified, or fluorinated
has not been found to include PFAS. Customers can check the label on the products listed in the table
below to determine the source of the water.
A production date is posted on the shoulder of the bottle and can be checked to determine the date of the
bottling. Only water produced before July 24, 2019 is included in this consumption advisory. Container
sizes range from 1-2.5 gallons.
