Introduction:

Cyber Crime:

Cyber-crime or computer oriented crime can be


defined as “offences that are committed against
individuals or group of individuals with a criminal
motive to intentionally harm the reputation of the
victim or cause physical or mental harm or loss to
the victim directly indirectly, using modern
Telecommunication networks such as internet and
mobile phones”.

Common type of cyber-crime includes hacking,


online scams, and fraud, identity theft, attacks on
computer systems, cyber bullying, online trading
issues, online child sexual abuse material are some
of the common type of cyber-crimes.
HISTORY OF CYBER CRIME:

 The first recorded cybercrime took place in 1820.


 That is not surprising considering the fact that the
abacus, which is thought to be the earliest from of a
computer, has been around since 3500 BC.
 In India and China, the era of modern computer,
however, began with the analytical engine of Charles
Babbage.
 The first spam email took place in 1976+ when it was
sent out over the ARPANT.
 The first virus was installed on an Apple computer in
1982 when a high school student, Rich skrenta,
developed the EIK Cloner.

 CATEGORIES OF CYBER CRIME:

We can categorize cybercrime in two ways:

 The computer as a target: using a computer to attacks


other computer, e.g. Hacking, virus/worms attacks, Dos
attack etc.
 The computer as a weapon: using a computer to
commit real world crime. E.g. cyber terrorism, credit
card fraud and pornography etc.
OUR CASE: ATM PIN THEFT

HIGHILIGHTS OF THE CASE:

K erala police issue directives to account holders of SBI, Federal Bank in

light of pin theft. The thief installed cameras, skimmers in ATMs.

Kerala is shocked after a global syndicate secured the pin number of many
people and withdrew money from their bank accounts without their
knowledge.

Kerala police as issued directives to customers of SBI and federal banks and
of other banks who had withdrawn money from 5 ATMs in
Thiruvananthapuram where the robbers used skimmers and cameras to get
the password of customers who had used ATMs on June 30, july3 and July 4.

HOW DO THEY DO IT:

According to additional general police the operation was


simple, the “looters installed skimmers and web cams in
ATMs and sourced the pin numbers of people and withdrew
money from Mumbai”. it was a high tech bank loot by the
crime syndicate. The investigation team was identified three
foreign nationals who had withdrawn money. The syndicate
installed a chip to read the ATM numbers and a camera to
discloses the pin number.

This case comes under cybercrime and is regulated


by the government under cyber law.
CYBER LAW:
Cyber law is the area of law that deals with internets relationships to
technological and electronics elements, including computers,
software, hardware, and information systems. Cyber law may also
know as Internet law. The main aim of cyber law is to prevent or
reduce large scale damage from cyber-criminal activities by protecting
information access, privacy, communication, intellectual property
related to the use of internet, websites, Emails, computer software
and hardware, such as storage devices.

SOLUTION TO THE CASE:


 Make sure to use a strong password with combination of special
character and numeric values for authentic purpose
 Always use a firewall on your computer to protect it from hacker.
Almost all the antivirus software come with an inbuilt firewall, use
it to your benefit along with the one that come with the router
 Always use a secure and encrypted channel for sending personal
data or messages
 Use an antivirus software software and always keep its database
up-to-date as virus definition keep on changing
 Disable or unplug your camera, microphone an d GPs if you aren’t
using it
 Secure your mobile phone by using the inbuilt security feature. By
activating password on your system, you can prevent hackers for
accessing your phone
 Don’t share your bank account number and debit/credit card
password or CVV to anyone, even if someone call password or CVV
to anyone, even if someone calls and says they are from the bank.
Don’t swipe your debit/credit card at an untrusted ATM
