SCULPT MODE FEATURES

NEW TOOLS AND SCULPTURE RESOURCES FOR BLENDER

visual guide for the study 02

3D illustration by Pablo Dobarro
made with the new resources of
developed sculpture for Blender.

Concept by Jessica Madorran.

This visual guide aims to promote and disseminate
the experimental use of new tools and resources to
digital sculpture in Blender. It is the result of the growing interest
of Blender users and other 3D sculpture softwares
in the work developed by Pablo Dobarro,
with the Martin Felke collaboration.

It is not, then, a denitive guide

or ofcial documentation of the developer.

We hope you make good use of this support material

aimed at artists and enthusiasts of 3D sculpture.

Before Now

exactly Now I can
the cursor? see him.

The new Sculpt Mode Features cursor introduces a great visual and practical improvement.
Thanks to it the cursor is now oriented parallel to the sculpted surface,
following the normal of this same surface.

To modify this behavior we have the Normal Radius parameter. When the values of Normal Radius they are at zero,
NORMAL FACE there is no change in the mesh in the normal direction. The value of 0.2 is the one recommended for most of the cases,
CURSOR being that 1.0 conditions the cursor to read the normals in the standard way, the same adopted so far in the official
versions of Blender.
05 Sculpt Mode Features

In the Edit menu through Preferences, you have access to the Blender customization options. In Navigation options
2D VIEWPORT there are options regarding Orbit and Pan, including 2D Viewport Panning. Activate it to keep the center of rotation
PANNING under the cursor while panning.
06 Sculpt Mode Features

Grab

With the Automasking feature use, either in Topology or Edges it is possible to move the vertices and edges only of the
AUTOMASKING selected mesh, as masking and isolating the mesh of the same object but topologically separated. This happens when
several objects are joined in one with the Join option in Edit Mode.
07 Sculpt Mode Features

Paint

It allows to paint the surface of the mesh. To be able to see the painting it is necessary to change to the display mode
PAINT VERTEX Solid, to Vertex. Also, in the Objet Data tab it is necessary to add a Vertex Color slot.
COLORS To paint and sculpt at the same time use sculpting brushes, with the option Color Mode in Mix. Note: the characteristic
Paint Vertex Color does not work with the active Multiresolution modifier.
08 Sculpt Mode Features

Color Filter paint vertex color

Red Green Blue

Random Hue Random Saturation Random Value

The Color Filter feature currently offers up to 12 color control options applied to the new paint vertex color
COLOR FILTER system. In addition, there is also the Strength controller that allows to increase or reduce the intensity of the
filter during each application.
09 Sculpt Mode Features

Dam

DAM BRUSH It allows to draw lines and grooves with greater precision, smoothness and fluidity.
10 Sculpt Mode Features

Polygonal mesh Voxel size 0.01m Voxel size 0.05m Voxel size 0.01m

Snake Hook

Remakes the surface of the mesh of objects. With the Remesh function it is possible to increase and reduce the density
VOXEL REMESH of the new mesh by changing the Voxel size value. It also allows, among other things, to weld the superimposed faces
intersection, resulting in a continuous and fluid mesh. The Remesh options are available in the Objet Data tab.
11 Sculpt Mode Features

Brush Brush

Scrape

It makes it possible to flatten volumes in any geometry. For flattening curved surfaces or rounded edges it is indicated
SCRAPE EFFECT to use the Scrape brush with Strength in 1.000 and the Curve Preset in Smooth. To flatten large volumes it is
DYNAMIC preferable to use the Scrape with Strength in 2.000, being that Curve Preset can remain in Custom, and then use the
Normal Radios as an influence of the hardness (the lower the value the greater the hardness of the brushstroke).
12 Sculpt Mode Features

Scrape

Dam
Grab

New curve options have been created to improve the performance of brushes. For example, with the Grab brush it is
recommended to use the Curve Preset in Smooth. With Dam brush it is recommended to use Sharper. With the Scrape
CURVE PRESET brush the Curve Preset remains in Custom being that the hardness is controlled with the value of Normal Radius (whose
pattern of use is 0.200). The smaller the Radius Normal value, the harder the effect of the brush stroke on the mesh.

Mesh Filter

The Mesh Filter works in association with the sculpture masks (for example, Box Mask) and presents different
MESH FILTER results according to the type of filter used. See some application examples in the previous images.

It allows a greater uniformity in the control of the spacing between the brush strokes. For better results configure the
USE WORLD options of the Brush, Texture and Stroke menu according to the previous image.
SPACING Note: to provide greater fluency when drawing curves with alpha texture brushes of the simple seam type, the ideal
is to prepare the alpha texture following the rule of 1/2.
15 Sculpt Mode Features

Masking with Hide/Mask option> Lasso Mask Grab Brush with Curve Preset in Constant

It moves in extrusion portions of vertices towards outside or inwards of the sculpture with the use of masks. To apply
MASK + GRAB just create masks and interact with the Grab or Snake Hook brushes configured in Brush with Curve Preset options.
CONSTANT In this type of uses, the ideal option is the Constant option in Curve Preset.

This is a tool still in development, but it is already possible to test some of its functionalities. To apply the Transform Tool
TRANSFORM options illustrated above, the first step is to mask the entire object. right away position the gizmo in the starting place of the
TOOL transformation (for now only Move and Rotate). The third and last step before To activate the gizmo with the transformation
function is to edit the applied mask, unmasking the area to be affected.

1) In sculpture mode, the object to which the Bolean operation will be applied using the Voxel Remesh system. 2) Switch to the object
BOLEANS + mode and insert (add) the new mesh that will interact with the Remesh modifier (for example, cylinder). Next, select the Voxel Remesh
sculpture and activate the Remesh modifier (A). 3) Configure the modifier to operate in mode: Voxel (B). (C) Click on +(more) to open
VOXEL REMESH the target options. Then indicate the object that will perform the bolean (for example, cylinder) (D) and choose one of the options of
boleans next (for example, Difference). 4) Apply (E) to apply the bolean operation and then delete the interaction object.
18 Sculpt Mode Features

PART 1 - This is the dynamic voxel sculpture mode still in development, the equivalent of the current Blender Dyntopo.
To be able to sculpt in this mode it is necessary first 1) to enable the visualization in LookDev. Then, with the selected object
LIVE REMESH in object mode, 2) add the Remesh modifier. In the side tab Remesh 3) select Voxel in mode, and in Voxel Size
between the value of 0.1000 (the same as 0.1m). Go to sculpture mode and 4) apply a 0.1m Remesh too.
19 Sculpt Mode Features

PART 2 - Now just choose a sculpture brush and 5) start modeling your base shape. Notice how the mesh can be stretched,
compressed and even mixed in real time, without the need for constant remeshes. As soon as you are satisfied with the modeled
LIVE REMESH base returns to object mode and 6) applies the Remesh modifier. From this stage, go back to sculpting normally, being able 7) to
refine its base sculpture with Remesh of greater density and Smooth normals.

Shrink Mask

Mask Filter is an excellent resource for controlling masked areas. First apply the mask to the object. Then just left click
on any part of the object to soften the mask with Blur Mask, harden with Sharpen Mask, increase the surface with Grow
MASK FILTER Mask and decrease the surface with Shrink Mask. You can also increase the degree of interactions to each click when
you change the value of Interations in the property bar.
21 Sculpt Mode Features

Many times launching the Blender search engine can facilitate access to certain sculpture resources. For example, to
F3 + MASK apply a mask based on the normality of a surface, 1) place the cursor over the region of the mask and press F3. In
BY NORMAL the search field 2) type Mask and, automatically, a list of options will be shown. 3) Click Mask by normal to mask the
previously indicated region.
