CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction

In today’s generation where fashion and pop-culture are a popular thing,

there’s no doubt a lot of individuals will be dying just to buy things that are desired

by many. Things that are well-accepted and seen as fashionable by numerous people.

But since these things may be costly and expensive, people tend to be looking for

budget friendly things or items, and to be able to pace with the latest style in a

cheapest way possible. Taytay, Rizal a district where Taytay Tiangge is located is

the place to answer what people are longing for. Providing people with products that

are cheap and popular, helping both the customer in their desires and the vendors in

their business, Taytay Tiangge is it.

However, the increasing popularity of Taytay Tiangge caused heavy traffic

in few places in Taytay that concerns not only the local government, but also drivers,

commuters and fellow civilians around the area. Lowering the profit of working

drivers due to fuel consumption and time delay, ruining the schedule of drivers and

commuters attending to work and going to school, and destroying the image of the

local government of Taytay especially those responsible of dealing with the traffic

are some of the observed problems.

In this study, the researchers aimed to find what are the certain reasons for

these phenomena happen. This research presented the ways to maximize advantages
2

and minimize disadvantages of the Taytay Tiangge by giving information to people

about the traffic condition in Taytay. In order to do all these, interview was conducted

to selected individuals in Taytay who had experienced, in one way or the other, the

effects of the increasing popularity of the known Taytay Tiangge. This research

includes the experiences of drivers, students, civilians, commuters, buyers, vendors

and traffic enforcers who also gave their opinions, thoughts and theories about the

increasing popularity of Taytay Tiangge and the effect it brought to them.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to know the perception of the respondents on

increasing popularity of Taytay Tiangge and its effect to the traffic and day-to-day

life of the people. Specific question that sought answer are the following:

1. How has the Taytay Tiangge helped the municipality of Taytay?

2. What is the effect of the increasing number of Tiangge to the traffic flow

in the Municipality of Taytay?

3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the Tiangge in the day to

day life of the people?

4. What measures can be done or implemented to reduce the traffic in the area

without compromising the Taytay Tiangge?

coming from first-hand individuals who are directly affected by the problem

presented in this study.

Significance of the study

The researchers believe that the result of this study would be beneficial to the

following:

To the Vendors

This study can give additional information to expand their understanding on

the land transportation system, which can help them decide where it is more efficient

to sell their goods.

To the Drivers

The information that this study would provide could also aid the drivers in

predicting when the travel time would be shorter and information on how they will

help to lessen the traffic.

To the Residents

To give information about the traffic flow in Taytay and effects of Taytay

Tiangge to the people and to the municipality of Taytay and additionally how they

will help to lessen the traffic in Taytay Tiangge.

5

To the Local Government Unit

The local government would have less traffic management issues when the

roads that the Tiangge shoppers use flow more freely because of the new mindset

that the people would have if they applied the information this research would offer.

To the Future Researchers

To gather information on how Taytay Tiangge affects the flow of traffic in

Taytay and the daily lives of people around Taytay.

`Scope and Delimitation

This study aims to provide information on how the popularity of the Taytay

Tiangge affects the way of life by looking into its effect on the traffic and day-to-day

living of the people in Taytay. This study does not cover the entire problem on the

traffic but rather on the first-hand experiences of respondents and how they are

affected with it. The interview conducted to gather information was limited to

drivers, residents, vendors, commuters and enforcers who has direct involvement in

the study. This study presented only the current situation and does not generalize the

scenario.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter includes related literature and studies relevant to the topic. It

presents written works like literature, studies, principles and theories of different

reputable people that were used by the researchers to give profound basis and support

to the topic under study.

Flea Market (Tiangge) and its Advantages and Disadvantages

Based on Market Business News (n.d.), flea market is an outdoor market with

stalls that sell nearly new or old goods cheaply. In some places, a flea market sells

very old furniture or antiques. In others, it is an outdoor market that sells old things

at a discount. Regardless of how the term’s meaning may vary, in most cases, it is an

outdoor market that sells cheap things. Sometimes, the market may have an indoor

venue, such as a school gym or warehouse.

Why is it called a flea market? As stated by Matt Soniak (2012), one idea

historian have is that flea market comes from the outdoor bazaars of Paris, some of

which have been around for hundreds of years. According to the association that runs

one of the markets today, the term first sprang up in the 1880s when an unknown

bargain hunter looked upon the market with its rags and old furniture and dubbed

it le marché aux puces (“market of fleas”), because of shoppers’ perceptions that

some of the more time-worn wares sold there carried the little bloodsuckers. The first
8

Integrated Basic Education Department

recorded appearance in English that the Oxford English Dictionary lists, from 1922,

makes reference to this origin.

As explained by the Chorrbazaar (2016), the advantages of flea markets are

the following:

Building Neighborhoods

Much of the steadiness from the present flea market and swap meet industry

can be related to its dedicated vets as well as the permanence of many marketplaces.

From the markets interviewed, 70% of have already been open up for over 21 years.

38% from the supervisors surveyed have been operating that marketplace for more

than 12 years. Of suppliers, 50Percent indicated they have been in the industry for

over ten years.

A powerful mutual desire for free business, becoming a self-determining

business owner, and pursuing the American Dream pulls people with each other

within the flea industry. This connection keeps communities together and allows for

person market and vendor longevity.

Technologies Use

Flea Market Industry, despite the overall healthful state of flea market

financials and developments in systems applicable to promote owners and vendors,

this year’s study outcomes indicate technology usage has plateaued in some areas.

The majority of suppliers surveyed resource their wholesale items on the internet

(66%), and even more prefer to location orders through web sites versus email or
9

Integrated Basic Education Department

phone (85%). However, few individual vendors utilize the internet and social media

for their own marketing. Of vendors interviewed, 60Percent do not possess any social

media existence. Of the 40% that do use social networking, all use Facebook

exclusively. 82% of vendors do not have an internet site. Of the 82%, 87% usually

do not plan on ever having one. In contrast, 86% of marketplace proprietors and

managers noted having an active Facebook web page for his or her business.

Few retailers are making use of online marketing; however, a heightened

quantity of vendors is making use of conventional actual physical marketing and

advertising ways. 30 percent of suppliers have Put shows at their booths. 28% are

marketing and advertising with paper prints – a 20Percent increase from 2015’s

results. Vendors are marketing to shoppers already at the swap meet or market, but

not marketing their products outside of their markets to draw shoppers in. That’s the

conclusion.

Keeping with Custom

Virtually all (93%) of vendors interviewed market some kind of new products

at their booth. Only 22% of vendors market antique, utilized, or classic products. Out

of the flea market owners and managers who also sell at their markets, over 68% sell

antique and vintage merchandise. New merchandise is undoubtedly in-demand with

marketplace consumers, with gift and novelty products becoming the top-marketing

category this season, carefully followed by knives, and then precious jewelry. For

many market consumers there continues an expectation of finding deals and old-
10

Integrated Basic Education Department

fashioned products at swaps and flea markets. Lorna Ingersoll, great-granddaughter

from the founding father of Jamie’s Flea Marketplace, conveys, “Flea markets are

still traditional, and that’s what individuals enjoy.”

Product Tracking down

New goods are heavily prevalent in today’s flea marketplaces. In which is it

products coming from? 55% of surveyed vendors reported utilizing

wholesalecentral.com as their top resource for products. When choosing suppliers,

70% of suppliers mentioned that high quality was a very important aspect. Price was

ranked somewhat lower; with 66% claiming is an important factor. Low or no order

minimal also ranked higher being an identifying factor, with 45Percent of vendors

saying it was essential to them.

Supplier Goals

The primary factors vendors consider when selecting a marketplace are

consumer traffic, practical places, and the market’s marketing and advertising

efforts. 51 percent of suppliers reported that they would like to see higher shopper

quantities at their markets. 36 percent are concerned with way too many vendors

having comparable products within the same marketplace. However, concerns over

the economy, weather, and vendor competition affecting business have all decreased

from last year. General, vendors are experiencing fewer issues with their company.

Out of all the locations polled (weather, rising expenses of merchandise, discovering

quality providers, increasing costs of room rental, the theft, competition and
11

Integrated Basic Education Department

economy market’s advertising, overstock, and lack of customers), everyone had a

decrease in the portion of suppliers implying it as being a place of concern compared

to last year.

However, with its several advantages, there are still few disadvantages to

count. As indicated by the local people around Jhenidah (2013), weekly bazaars in

the district alongside roads and highways are causing complication to the smooth

vehicular movement as the temporary bazaars take control numerable parts of the

roads. Such as bazzars in Hatgopalpur, Goalpara, Madhupur, Tetultala, Bishoykhali,

Nagarbatham, Dakleangla, Baidanga and Halidhani under Sadar thana, Abaipur,

Hatfazilpur, Royera, Shalakupa, Ganaganj, Bhatai, Madandanga and Seikhpara

under Shailakupa thana, Barobazar, Elangi and Kaliganj under Kaliganj thana,

Kotchandpurhat u`nder Kotchandpur thana and Khalispur Moheshpur thana possess

most parts of streets and expressways, making obstacle smooth traffic development

in the territories.

Asim Biswas, 34, of town Harihra under Shailakupa thana, said that for need

of room the dealers in Shailakupa weekly bazaars are constrained to occupy parts of

public roads. He said if the experts concerned move the present place to Habibpur

paddy showcase, where two major structures stay deserted on an extensive land, the

issue will be illuminated. Local individuals have asked the specialists worried to take

quick measures to tackle the issue.

12

Integrated Basic Education Department

These problems will cause traffic congestion. Traffic congestion is a

condition on road networks that occurs as use increases, and is characterized by

slower speeds, longer trip times, and increased vehicular queueing.

In addition, Kelli Grant (2012) said that there are things flea market won’t

tell us. In flea markets, you can find better price to what you have bought, haggling

also doesn’t always work and you may also buy things that are not safe.

Talking about the growth of flea markets, Phyllis Bernstein (1981) said that

WESTBURY FLEA markets offering discount merchandise are continuing to

proliferate throughout the Island, vying with established retailers for billions of

consumer dollars.

While flea markets once sold an eclectic mix of antiques and latter-day wares

(now called collectibles), today the emphasis is on brand-new, brand-name

merchandise, running the gamut from designer jeans to sneakers, jewelry, cosmetics

and housewares. Hard goods and soft goods share stall spaces with purveyors of sour

pickles from the Lower East Side, dried fruits and nuts and ''fresh-baked'' apple

strudel.

Dr. Pearl M. Kamer, chief economist for the Long Island Regional Planning

Board, said the Island's retail sales for the first quarter of 1981 totaled $3.57 billion,

up about 13 percent from the previous year's figure of $3.16 billion. In real terms -

excluding the effects of inflation - the gain was 3 percent.

13

Growth of Tiangge and Effect to Economy

As reported by Monique (2016), Tiangge actually signifies "advertise" by and

large, at any rate as indicated by Andy M (2016). With respect to me, I could state

it's the casual term used to depict shoddy slows down moving assortment of products

that arranged a road or spreads an unfilled space and attracts numerous thrifty—or

closefisted rather—customers.

In the Philippines, you can discover loads of tiangge, some even are well

known shopping goals rounding up customers from various parts of the nation. Some

of it are Divisoria, Tutuban, Quiapo, Greenhills and some more. In case you're an

outsider visiting the Philippines, I prescribe that you visit these spots as these

tiangges are settled in one place.

Be that as it may, at that point the tiangge I would need to discuss is the

procession type. Moving into the more provincial piece of the nation where shopping

centers and shopping regions weren't found yet, tiangge resembles a blockbuster

motion picture the vast majority of the general population are foreseeing and are

amped up for. These tiangges exchange from town to town and lands in a single place

at a particular day.

As reported by Jovy Medina-Leonardo (2016), Probably the most celebrated

flea markets or "tiangge" in Metro Manila can be found in Baclaran, Divisoria and

Pasig. But one tiangge just outside the metropolis is making a name as the new haven

for customers searching for the best deals on quality-made garments and
14

Integrated Basic Education Department

embellishments.

That would the municipal tiangge of Taytay, Rizal, which is provided by the

town's powerful articles of clothing industry and has moved advancement in this

suburb toward the east of Manila.

In 2010, the administration of Taytay Mayor Joric Gacula saw the need and

the potential hosting these garment vendors in their own local tiangge in town.

Hence, the Municipal Council amended the Taytay Local Tax Ordinance No. 10,

establishing the tiangge in Kalayaan Park in order to encourage small retailers to

register their businesses and sell their goods in their own town.

The Kalayaan Tiangge was an instant success and garnered an initial 400

registered retailers. After three years, the local government decided to authorize a

council resolution approving a lease contract with Club Manila East Compound,

offering a larger space for the tiangge that could accommodate even more micro,

small and medium garments makers. At present, the local government aims to elevate

the standards and quality of the local products through planning and preparing the

vendors for upcoming innovations.

As reported by the GMA News (2008), tiangge can have a good and bad

effect to the economy. Starting with the benefits, tiangge offer low priced items for

the poor, it encourages spending, it supports food entrepreneurs as wherever there

are tiangge, there will be food stalls nearby, it provides employment for retail

workers and provides revenue for mall establishments.

15

Integrated Basic Education Department

Its bad sides are that the majority of the goods are smuggled cheap

substandard china imports, these goods directly compete with homegrown products,

stalls do not have business permits and do not pay business taxes and lastly most of

their employees are underpaid and have no benefits.

According to Patrik Jonsson, the flea markets' growth is part of a burgeoning

underground economy - one that has given hope to some laid-off workers turning

toward old hobbies and may have the power to change entire towns.

Despite the sheer size of markets like Hillsville's, the IRS has yet to crack

down on the collection of sales taxes, as the cost of the effort would outweigh its

gain. The growth of that "informal economy" has increased the amount of cash in

circulation per American from $1,105 in 1990 to $2,455 in 2004 - and untaxed goods

account for some 10 percent of the gross national product. It's a sign that, especially

in rural regions, Americans are diversifying: More and more, four- or five-income

streams are flowing into two-wage-earner households, says Elaine Edgecomb, a

director at the Aspen Institute, a Washington think tank.

Still, some critics worry that flea markets are a sign more of tragedy than

triumph - a symbol of sinking expectations and collapsing economies that can force

the liquidation of even the smallest assets. In that reading, the clusters of tents that

pop up in towns and on highways are less an homage to resourcefulness than a vision

harkening back to Dust Bowl days, when families sometimes sold their most precious

belongings to survive.
16

Integrated Basic Education Department

The truth, say economists, won't be clear for some time, and the picture is

muddled for now. Many vendors are "necessity entrepreneurs" who come to supplant

lost jobs. But there are also "pull factors," says Ms. Edgecomb - people seeking

autonomy, opportunity, and control who are drawn to the markets because they want

to cultivate a skill, or simply love doing it.

According to an interview with the President of Ayvalik Chamber of

Commerce: The bazaar in Ayvalik is known to stimulate the economy especially

during the summer season. The bazaar starts early in the morning and lasts until the

afternoon. It is said that in the traditional bazaars a prospective client could sit in front

of the dealer, talk with him and drink a tea or a coffee, in a relaxed way to negotiate.

At the Ayvalik bazaar, merchants and clients were drinking tea regardless.

You can find anything from clothes, accessories, household items, rugs,

groceries and even counterfeit watches.

What struck him was that many merchants labelled their products with prices

in Euros even though the Turkish currency is the Turkish Lira. Thus, realizing how

significant the European (economic) influx really is. Most merchants also accepted

Euros as direct payment. Credit cards were out of the question. Today the Ayvalik

bazaar remains an essential part of the economy of the town, just as it did in the era

of Persian kings.
17

Integrated Basic Education Department

Reducing Problems brought by Tiangge

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said it will allow

the operation of flea markets and bazaars this holiday season as long as they do not

obstruct the flow of traffic.

Celine Pialago, MMDA spokesperson, said local government units in Metro

Manila are free to provide suitable vending areas for vendors who want to earn a

living for the holidays. Bong Nebrija, MMDA operations supervisor, said the agency

will sustain its clearing operations to ease the flow of traffic.

Nebrija said the agency’s clearing operations against obstructions badly need the

cooperation of local government, barangay officials, and even security personnel.

As reported by Nel B. Andrade (2016), in its effort to ease traffic congestion

along major thoroughfares here, especially now that the Christmas rush is around,

the municipal government has revived its drive against illegally-parked and stalled

vehicles along Ortigas Avenue and Floodway areas of the municipality.

Mayor George “Joric” Gacula has directed traffic authorities in re-

implementing City Ordinance No. 6-2003, City Ordinance No. 33-1999, and City

Ordinance No. 19-2015 that pertains to towing of illegally parked vehicles and non-

motorized vehicles and imposing penalties for violators in specific roads in the

municipality starting December 1.

18

Integrated Basic Education Department

Both Ordinance No.6-2003 and No. 33-1999 identify the areas covered by

the towing zones while Ordinance No. 19-2015 allows the municipal government to

implement the no parking and towing zones in the town respectively.

We all know that the one major problem caused by flea markets or

bazaars are traffic. That’s why reducing traffic congestion are one of the best

solutions. As reported by Smarter Cambridge Transport (2016), Urban Traffic

Management Control (UTMC) systems such as SCOOT can be very effective in

maximizing road capacity by varying the timing of traffic lights to match demand in

real time. When lights are all coordinated responsively to demand, incidences of

‘blocking back’ (vehicles stuck in junctions) leading to gridlock can be minimized.

Also, use of CCTV at junctions allows traffic managers to see breakdowns,

collisions and other causes of congestion. Combined with good communication

systems with Highways England, the police and major road users (such as airports,

train stations, retail parks), this can ensure traffic managers receive advance warning

of issues that will impact their network.

Illegal parking, waiting, loading/unloading obstructs traffic flow, reduces

capacity at junctions, holds up buses, and increases danger to those walking or

cycling. Blocking junctions, which is illegal where there’s a yellow box, can cause

gridlock across a wide area of the road network.

The government is currently reviewing the law around pavement parking. It

may decide to extend to the rest of the country the ban that exists in London, but that
19

Integrated Basic Education Department

will still require enforcement. Penalty Charge Notices currently given for illegal

unloading are seen simply as a cost of doing business, so perhaps an escalating

penalty for repeat offences should be considered.

Enablement of Part 6 of the Traffic Management Act 2004 would allow civil

enforcement of a wide range of minor moving vehicle offences, which currently the

police have neither the resources nor incentives to enforce.

There is also a perception (partly class-related) that trams are more attractive

than buses. Rather than pander to this bias – potentially at huge expense – it makes

sense to examine why the perception exists. Requiring bus drivers to collect fares,

verify tickets and passes, account for all money taken, and spot fare dodgers adds

considerable stress to their job, and increases the dwell time at stops. Instead,

operators should employ specialist revenue protection officers with powers to impose

on-the-spot fines. CCTV on board buses provides a means to spot and target repeat

offenders.

Also, another answer is to extend parking controls much further out from the

center of the city in a coordinated way. Adding new residents’ parking zones in a

piecemeal fashion simply pushes problems to a new area. By coordinating the

expansion it’s possible to have one-hour residents’ parking zones, which can be

patrolled by one or two civil enforcement officers. A patrol route can be designed

through consecutive one-hour restrictions: 10-11am in one area, 11-noon in the next,
20

Integrated Basic Education Department

noon-1pm in the next, and so on. Combined with ANPR (automatic number plate

recognition) technology, enforcement can be quick and cheap.

Additionally, free parking at employment sites attracts traffic and therefore

contributes indirectly to congestion. Nottingham has led the way in introducing a

workplace parking levy (WPL). The effect on congestion is relatively small, but

significant. More importantly it incentivizes employers to help their employees find

alternative ways to get to work. WPL is politically easier to introduce than a

congestion charge and can provide local authorities with a revenue stream to invest

in public and active transport options

Synthesis

The research is a collaboration of the different materials such as thesis,

articles, and journals. The concepts and theories that are cited were useful and vital

in this study for it supports and guides the researchers toward the fulfillment of the

desired output. The cited research gave critical and comprehensive analysis, different

information and additional explanation about the assigned research topic.

Based on the different theories of experts, a bazaar or tiangge have its own

disadvantage and advantage to be counted. Its main disadvantage is the traffic caused

by many sources. An accident isn't needed to create them, sometimes they

are caused by near-misses, by people cutting each other off, by merging lanes at a

construction site, or simply by extra cars entering from an on-ramp.

21

Integrated Basic Education Department

Traffic is really a major issue for individuals especially to those who are

working and needed to go to their workplace early because no one wants to be tardy

as always. Many commuters got sick about the traffic that they encountered every

day. It is inevitable since the road, highways, and such are not quite wide enough to

lessen the traffic since there are lots of different kinds of vehicles especially to those

employees who uses their own vehicle and those employees that commutes to their

work every day. Well, traffic is non-measurable and that is so hard even if an

employee has his or her own vehicle or none, and also harder to employees that came

from far-flung locations.

But even with its disadvantage, people view bazaars as a convenience for

some especially to the vendors that work in that place. Many people around the area

might mean a lot of customer for vendors that becomes an opportunity for them to

show off their products. Also, the local government of Taytay could take advantage

of these things as Taytay Tiangge plays an important role in the economic

development of the Municipality of Taytay. Further knowledge about the strategies

employed by the tiangge sellers and its effects on the purchasing interest of the

market will bring larger success and benefits to the municipality and residents.

CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the research methods accessible for the study and what

is applicable in response for the statement of the problem. This part of the study

presents research design, subject of the study, locale of the study, sampling

technique, instrument of the study, procedure of the study and the data analysis.

Research Design

This research used phenomenology as its research design. According to

Sokolowski (2000), phenomenology is the study of human experience and of the way

things present themselves to us in and through such experience. The research team

used the phenomenology in order to find the experiences of the local residences in

Taytay about the tiangge and how it affected them in their day-to-day lives. By their

experiences, the researchers got the perception of the people of Taytay about the

Taytay tiangge, the traffic it brought about, and presented possible solution to this

problem.

Subject of the Study

In this research, twenty (20) individuals around Taytay were selected to

participate in the process. They were carefully chosen and interviewed to gather data

needed for the study. As stated by Maria Luca of Regent’s University of London
23

Integrated Basic Education Department

(2013), there is no rule for interviews needed in qualitative research. However, if the

qualitative method is designed to meet rigour and trustworthiness, thick and rich data

are important. That is why in order to achieve these principles, it will need at least

twelve (12) interviews.

In this study, the respondents comprised five (5) drivers, five (5) vendors,

two (2) individuals from the local government, and eight (8) residents from Taytay.

They were interviewed to collate experiences that affect them about the topic under

study.

Locale of the Study

The study was conducted in the municipality of Taytay in Rizal. Taytay is a

1st class municipality in the province of Rizal. According to the 2015 census, it has

a population of 319,104 people. Taytay is known as the Woodworks and Garments

Capital of the Philippines. The Taytay Tiangge, a place known by its cheap price and

access to fashion is one of the largest garments’ producers in the province of Rizal.

The National Competitiveness Council has named Taytay as the "1st Most

Competitive Municipality”, for year 2018. Taytay Tiangge is also known as street

bargain market among tourists and nearby residents.

24

Integrated Basic Education Department

Sampling Technique

Since the study affected reasonable amount of people in Taytay, the

researchers decided to use judgement sampling as the most appropriate sampling

technique. Judgement sampling is a non-random sampling technique wherein the

choice of sample items depends exclusively on the investigator’s knowledge and

professional judgment. In other words, the investigator chooses only those sample

items which he feels to be the best representative of the population with regard to the

attributes or characteristics under investigation. The researchers believe that if they

use this sampling technique, they would be able to target people who actually are

affected by the tiangge, therefore gathering more accurate insights about the topic.

Instrument of the Study

The researchers opted to use interview as instrument of the study. As stated

by the Theory and Practice in Language Studies (2013) interview is a form of an

essential part of data collection for many qualitative studies. It gives information

about how to individualize interview formats to meet the purpose and style of specific

qualitative research approaches. The researchers used interview to actually gather

raw and reliable data direct from the respondents. Although it is time consuming, the

respondents’ answers to questions are very credible and can bring about reliable

results to analyze with.

25

Integrated Basic Education Department

Procedure of the Study

In this school year 2018-2019, a research was conducted by a newly formed

thesis group led by Practical Research teacher. They were asked to make a qualitative

research topic in relation to their strand, the ABM (Accountancy, Business and

Management) strand.

The study started with the researchers thinking of a topic that is relevant and

timely and poses problems around the area. They then formulated a working title that

led them in creating the statement of the problem that help in finding out what are

the problems to be resolved. They also came up on how this study will be helpful to

people and find out what will be its contribution to the society. Afterwards they

proceeded in finding some of applicable related literature and studies connected to

their topic using internet sources and library resources.

An interview was conducted where respondents were cautiously chosen. The

interview had different questions representing the different respondents’ profile. All

questions given to respondents were all associated with the topic and was recorded

and noted as guide for the data analysis.

After gathering information and data, the researchers interpreted the outcome

and related it to the study. Qualitative data analysis was utilized to give reliable and

trustworthy interpretation of the responses.

26

Integrated Basic Education Department

Data Analysis

For data analysis tools, thematic areas and original contents of respondents

was used. Themes according to the University of Huddersfield are features of

participants accounts characterizing particular perceptions and or/experiences that

the researcher sees as relevant to the interview question. Thematic Analysis is a

flexible data analysis plan that qualitative researchers use to generate themes from

interview data. This data analysis plan is perfect for both novice and expert

qualitative researchers because the steps are easy to follow but rigorous enough to

generate meaningful findings from the data. By using this form of analysis, I

identified major themes and concepts. The analysis was conducted in the following

steps: (1) perusing through the data collected and identify relevant information to

research in order to address the research objectives and questions; (2) applying a

coding system based on the samples collected and finally; (3) classification of major

issues and topics covered through thematic analysis; (4) re-read the text and take note

of key quotations, insights and interpretations; (5) place the coded materials under

the major themes or topics identified and grouping them.

Meanwhile, the data gathered from the interview were analyzed then given

brief interpretation about it. Altogether each data was analyzed and interpreted with

its relevant study and literature.

CHAPTER IV
RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

The primary purpose of this study was to find a way on how the increasing

popularity of Taytay Tiangge affects the traffic in Taytay. The other purpose of the

study was to identify how the Taytay Tiangge and the traffic affects the daily lives

of people around Taytay.

Respondents’ experiences and feedback added insights to the research

questions posed in this study. By listening, noting and analyzing the experiences and

answers of these respondents, valuable information was obtained about the effects of

increasing popularity of Taytay Tiangge to the traffic and to the daily lives of people

around Taytay. Respondents answers were the source to construct a well-planned

conclusion and recommendations that will benefit people in Taytay. In this chapter,

the research questions are addressed with supporting evidence, including both

quotations and feedback from the respondents. Data analysis is also done using the

thematic analysis. Researchers examined, distinguished and recorded patterns (or

themes) within the data.

Demographic of Respondents

The profile of the respondents has a very significant role to play in expressing

and giving the responses about the problem, keeping this in mind, in this study a set
29

Integrated Basic Education Department

of personal profile namely, age, gender, occupation, and years in the residence of

Taytay have been examined and presented in this chapter.

Table 1
Demographic of the Respondents

Years in Taytay
1-7 years 2 10%
8-15 years 3 15%
16-25 years 9 45%

It was evident that the majority of respondents were those in the age of about
30

Integrated Basic Education Department

31 years old and above, followed by respondents aging of 19-30 years old and lastly

are the respondents aging of about 14-18 years old.

Additionally, it was quite clear that out of total respondents interviewed for

this study, an overwhelming majority were males.

Also, in the table 1, respondents with an occupation of accountant,

businessman, businesswoman, desk officer, nurse and traffic enforcer have the

lowest frequency amounting to 1. However, respondent who are students have a

frequency of 4. Lastly, respondents who have a frequency of about 5 were

respondents that have an occupation of being a vendor and tricycle driver.

Talking about years in residence in Taytay, majority of the respondents spend

years in Taytay for about 16-25 years followed by respondent staying in Taytay for

about 26 years and above, 8-15 years and lastly, years in residence which got the

lowest frequency are those in Taytay for about 1-7 years.

Based on the research done by Kumar (2016), in social sciences research,

personnel characteristics of respondents have very significant role to play in

expressing and giving the responses about the problem. Age of the respondents is

one of the most important characteristics in understanding their views about the

particular problems; by and large age indicates level of maturity of individuals in that

sense age becomes more important to examine the response. Also, Gender is an

important variable in a given Indian social situation which is variably affected by any

social or economic phenomenon and globalization is not an exception to it.

31

Integrated Basic Education Department

Additionally, Person’s occupations also do have a bearing on his or her personality

and so also the ways of looking at the problem before him. The quality of life is also

determined by an individual’s occupation and the incomes he derives from it.

Occupation of an individual also socialized him or her in a particular fashion which

in turn reflects his or her pattern of behaviors and his/her level of understanding of

particular phenomenon. And lastly, given that it can take time to build supportive

social ties, length of neighborhood residence may be an important determinant of

social integration. Indeed, existing research suggests that high rates of residential

turnover in a neighborhood weaken interpersonal ties and disrupt social

infrastructures that support the formation of new ties (Kasarda J. 1999). Additionally,

studies find that longer residential length, assessed at the individual level, is

associated with more social support, local friendships and participation in local

organizations.

Taytay Tiangge’s Help in the Municipality of Taytay

Taytay Tiangge’ increasing popularity is one thing that happened that affect

not only the people but the municipality of Taytay itself. Knowing its contribution to

the municipality is one thing that people in Taytay should know.

32

Integrated Basic Education Department

Table 2
Taytay Tiangge’s Helping the Municipality of Taytay

Identified Theme Expressed Responses

Popularity It increases the number of buyers from neighbor cities.

It increases the number of investments.

Economical It increases the income of municipality of Taytay and

the money it holds

Decreases unemployment rate of Taytay

According to the respondents, the increasing popularity of Taytay Tiangge

makes the municipality at Taytay itself popular. Based on their justification, the

popularity Taytay Tiangge increases the people from neighbor cities buying product

there and going there. They said that it became a tourist spot because many celebrities

and other known people try to go there just to buy clothes they need. Also, according

to them, the effect of the popularity of municipality of Taytay was it increases the

number of investments Taytay receiving which will further help in the improvement

of Taytay.

Also, based on their answers, Taytay Tiangge help the municipality

economically. Respondents said that the Taytay Tiangge help the municipality by

increasing its income and the money it holds because of the fast cycle of money from

the increase number of buyers inside the tiangge. They also said that through the
33

Integrated Basic Education Department

permit they paid, they were able to help Taytay by increasing its municipal money.

They also said that Taytay Tiangge is one big sources of income of the municipality

that is why there is no doubt Taytay Tiangge really help the municipality of Taytay.

Another answer gathered from respondents is that Taytay Tiangge help the

municipality by decreasing its unemployment rate. Many businessmen get this

opportunity to sell their goods and get income through it. This includes not only those

tiangge vendors but also those food vendors and restaurant around the Taytay

Tiangge. Also, some little vendors were able to sell out their goods because of the

Taytay Tiangge and even those jobless people were able to get a job through Taytay

Tiangge.

In a similar foreign study, Jonsson (2004) mentioned that the flea markets'

growth is part of a burgeoning underground economy - one that has given hope to

some laid-off workers turning toward old hobbies and may have the power to change

entire towns.

Tiangge and the Traffic in Taytay

The increasing popularity of Taytay Tiangge is no doubt a big help not only

for Taytayeños but also for the people from neighbor cities. However, even with

known benefits, there is no way it the increase of Taytay Tiangge will not affect the

traffic flow of Taytay. With this, many reasons for this issue can be seen.
34

Integrated Basic Education Department

Table 3
Effects Tiangge to the Traffic in Taytay

Identified Theme Justification

Vendors It increases sidewalk vendors which makes the space

narrower

Overpopulated Too many buyers/pedestrians

Too many vehicles

Values and ethics Unruly Buyers/Pedestrians

Unruly Drivers

According to the respondents, the increased number of tiangges also

increased the number of illegal things around the area. This is a big concern for them

because illegal vendors are increasing and not only it’s not fair for the other vendors

but also, they block the way that should be given to some vehicles that later causes

traffic. They said that these illegal vendors should be taken out for good.

Based on the answer of respondents, overpopulation is one effect increasing

number of tiangge to the flow of traffic in Taytay. They said that the growing number

of tiangges bring too many buyers in the area. They said that with the increasing

number of buyers, drivers take time to cross because many people crossing the road

can be seen everywhere. Also, they stated that the tiangge also brings a lot of vehicles

in the road. This was a big concern for them because it is the number one cause of
35

Integrated Basic Education Department

traffic congestion. Also, with a lot of vehicles, some drivers take too long to park

their car that later affects the flow of traffic. One reason for this increasing number

of vehicles is because of great number of buyers from neighbor cities who bring their

vehicles along with the trip to Taytay tiangge.

Additionally, some respondents stated that another cause of traffic in Taytay

are those unruly buyers/pedestrians and drivers. They justified that because many

buyers were in a hurry just to buy things they need, they were able to violate some

rules and regulations in the area which is mainly crossing the road in the pedestrian

lane. They cross the road anytime and anywhere which is a big concern of driver

causing delay. Also, they said that because of these tiangges, some drivers also in a

hurry making them able to disobey the rules, overtaking some vehicles which is not

good for the flow of traffic.

In a similar situation, as indicated by the local people around Jhenidah (2013),

weekly bazaars in the district alongside roads and highways are causing complication

to the smooth vehicular movement as the temporary bazaars take control numerable

parts of the roads. Such as bazzars in Hatgopalpur, Goalpara and Madhupur. Asim

Biswas, 34, of town Harihra under Shailakupa thana, said that for need of room the

dealers in Shailakupa weekly bazaars are constrained to occupy parts of public roads.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Tiangge to Everyday Life

Taytay tiangge was built to benefit all people around it and there is no doubt

advantages are seen in every angle of it but even with its numerous advantages,

disadvantage can also be seen. Respondents in this study used their actual

experiences in identifying the advantages and disadvantages of tiangge in their

everyday lives.

Table 4
Advantages and Disadvantages of Taytay Tiangge to Everyday Life

Advantages Disadvantages

 Provide cheap and budget  Low quality products

friendly products
 Illegal Vendors
 Easy to locate
 Traffic
 Not too far away

 Source of income of vendors

 Increases the income of tricycle

drivers

According to the respondents, one advantage Tiangge to the people is the

products it sells. Respondents said that its big advantage is it provides cheap and

budget friendly products for all of the people in Taytay. They also stated that when

one is low in budget but still tries to be fashionable, Taytay tiangge is the place to

go. Additionally, respondent said that Taytay tiangge is very easy to locate because
37

Integrated Basic Education Department

there are many guides in the internet and many people know where it is found. She

also said that it was very easy to go to because it is not that far away from the cities.

Also, respondent justified that Taytay tiangge helped them to provide their

needs and wants in their day to day. Some respondents stated that as a vendor, Taytay

tiangge is a big help for them because without Tiangge, they will be not able to sell

their goods and get a place to sell it. Also, because of the Tiangge they get an

opportunity to be able to widen their business. Another response from respondents is

that the Tiangge helped them to increase their income as a tricycle driver. Taytay

Tiangge was able to increase the buyers in the area therefore, increasing their

customers which was the source of their income.

Talking about disadvantages, respondents stated that low quality products are

one of the disadvantages of Taytay Tiangge because of its cheap price, there’s no

doubt some of the products might be easily broken. He said that he once bought an

earphone there and after 2 days it broke. Another information we gather from

respondents is the illegal vendors. Because of the increasing popularity of Taytay

Tiangge, some illegal vendors don’t pay rent which is not fair for the legal vendors.

They also sell in the place that should be part of the road which later causes traffic.

And lastly, one big disadvantage stated by respondents is the traffic it caused.

They said that traffic affects the buyers and even the vendors because of the slow

flow of vehicles. Because of traffic, some of their customer forced to leave the

Tiangge thus decreasing their income. Also, one respondent which is a driver stated
38

Integrated Basic Education Department

that because of traffic, sometimes their income decrease lowering the number of rides

they have which is not good for them because it is their only source of income.

Measures to Reduce Traffic in Taytay without compromising the Tiangge

Traffic is known to be one of the most common issues in Taytay because of

the Taytay Tiangge. But for every problem, there’s a solution.

Table 5
Measures to Reduce Traffic in Taytay

Identified Theme Specific Measures

Infrastructure Overpass

Pedestrian Lanes

Values and Ethics Pedestrians crossing at the right place

Personnel and Skills Additional Traffic Enforcers

Traffic enforcer should be more trained

Based on the answers of the respondents, building an infrastructure was the

best way to solve the traffic in Taytay without compromising the Taytay Tiangge.

They said that the people from other places were the ones that make the flow of

traffic feel more congested. Their solution to this was to build an overpass. They

thought that it would be helpful to the people who weren’t used to crossing the roads
39

Integrated Basic Education Department

in the place. The presence of the overpass would mean that people wouldn’t have to

cross the road, getting rid of the fact that they were interrupting the flow of traffic in

the first place. Also, according to them, putting pedestrian lane in certain places in

Taytay is a great solution for this problem. People in Taytay Tiangge doesn’t know

where to cross because pedestrian lane is nowhere to be found causing pedestrians to

cross anywhere.

Another response gathered from the respondents was about the values and

ethics of people in Taytay Tiangge. They think that the solution is orienting the

values and discipline of the buyers and people around tiangge. They cross the road

anytime that might cause accident in the area. Their self-discipline will also play a

huge role if they intend to ease the flow of traffic in the area.

Lastly was the information and suggestion on adding and improving the skills

of traffic enforcer who play a big role in solving the traffic flow in Taytay. They

stated that the increase in number of traffic enforcer and makes them work actively

especially in school hours will help reduce the traffic in Taytay. Another suggestion

given by them was traffic enforcers should be trained better to ensure that they have

the best confidence in what they do. They should also be strict and disciplined.

We all know that the one major problem caused by flea markets or bazaars

are traffic. That is why reducing traffic congestion is one of the best solutions. As

reported by Smarter Cambridge Transport (2016), Urban Traffic Management

Control (UTMC) systems such as SCOOT can be very effective in maximizing road
40

Integrated Basic Education Department

capacity by varying the timing of traffic lights to match demand in real time. When

lights are all coordinated responsively to demand, incidences of ‘blocking back’

(vehicles stuck in junctions) leading to gridlock can be minimized. Also, use of

CCTV at junctions allows traffic managers to see breakdowns, collisions and other

causes of congestion.

CHAPTER V
FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

In this chapter, summary of the research is presented, and findings of the

study are discussed and interpreted. The conclusion of this research in the

immediate context on the effect of the increasing popularity of Taytay Tiangge to

the flow of traffic and to everyday lives of people is examined. Recommendations

for further research are given.

Summary of the Findings

This study was taken with the general objective of determining the effects of

the increasing popularity of Taytay tiangge to the flow of traffic and to the day to

day lives of people. Findings are summarized as:

1. Taytay Tiangge helping the municipality of Taytay

Based on the findings of the study derived from actual experiences, thoughts and

concepts of respondents, Taytay Tiangge helps the Municipality of Taytay by making

the municipality popular and helping it economically. With its popularity, many

people tend to buy and increase the number of buyers in Tiangge which is good for

the tourism of the municipality. It also increases investments it received. Also, based

on the findings, Taytay Tiangge helps the municipality economically by increasing

42

Integrated Basic Education Department

the income and money Taytay holds and decreasing the unemployment rate of the

municipality.

2. Effects of increasing number of tiangge to the flow of traffic in Taytay

Based in the findings of the study, the effects of the increasing number of tiangge to

the flow of traffic in Taytay are the illegal things it brings which causes traffic, the

area being overpopulated bringing traffic in the area and ruining the values and ethics

of the people in tiangge affecting the traffic flow of Taytay.

3. Advantages and disadvantages of Taytay Tiangge to everyday lives of

people

Majority of the respondents told that the advantage of Taytay Tiangge is that

it provides cheap and budget friendly products followed by Taytay Tiangge being

easy to locate and not too far away. Additionally, it was also their source of income.

The disadvantages of Taytay tiangge to the people is also one of the concerns

in this study. Based on the findings, the low quality of products, illegal vendors and

the traffic it caused were the experienced disadvantages of the respondents in Taytay

Tiangge.

4. Measures to be implemented to reduce the traffic in Taytay without

compromising the Taytay Tiangge

Based on the findings, the measures to be implemented as expressed by the

respondents were (1) building new infrastructure in Taytay like the overpass and

pedestrian lanes which help people cross the roads and drivers to make the flow of
43

Integrated Basic Education Department

traffic smooth. (2) orienting the ethics and values of people in tiangge; and (3)

additional enforcers and improving their skills on traffic management.

Conclusions

The researchers drew the following conclusions relative to the topic

understudy:

 The Taytay tiangge is an important part of the municipality because it is the

main source of income through the vendors business permits and rent

payments and the fast cycle money which help the municipality

economically. It also affects the popularity of Taytay because the people from

the neighboring cities also come to the tiangge to buy goods there. Since the

people from neighboring cities aren’t familiar with the roads near the tiangge,

most of the respondents believed that the construction of an overpass would

ease the flow of traffic. The presence of an overpass would negate the fact

that people would be crossing the street. The tourists wouldn't be a problem

anymore because they wouldn't require a lot of attention when crossing

anymore because they wouldn't be in the cars way if they used the overpass.
44

Integrated Basic Education Department

Recommendations

The researchers recommend the following for future advancement of this:

For the Residents

The researchers recommended the residences to learn, value and practice the

importance of proper etiquette. Cross on the right pedestrian, follow traffic rules and

park on designated areas

For the Local Government Officials

They may help in leading the traffic in Taytay if they may participate or

attend seminar in practicing the leadership level, training and monitoring that inspire

the professional growth and development of the municipality and additionally the

local government must make a project to reduce traffic.

For the Vendors

The other illegal vendors must cooperate in relocating them on better places

so that the sidewalks are free to walk. The vendors may find other areas to sell their

products to decrease the traffic that they cause because of the road congestions.

For the Drivers

The researcher suggests to the drivers that they can help reduce traffic by

obeying certain traffic laws, more specifically the loading and unloading rules. They

should only pick up and drop off passengers on the right places so that they wouldn't

interrupt the flow of traffic as much.

45

Integrated Basic Education Department

For the future researchers

The future researchers encourage to use our study as additional information

for the people when they do research on the Taytay tiangge so that they would have

a basis to work on and encourage them to conduct similar studies by utilizing other

variables like the phenomenology study about investing in Taytay tiangge in the

Municipality of Taytay.

Transcriptions of Interviews

Respondent 1:

Interviewer: Researcher

Interviewee: Traffic enforcer of Traffic Management Group (TMG)

Interview Settings: Interview conducted in the Taytay Tiangge on March 9, 2019.

(Start of the Interview)

Interviewer: It’s just a few questions. For you, how important it is that we have
Taytay Tiangge?

Interviewee: For me, Taytay Tiangge is important because it provides us cheap

products and Taytay become known because of Taytay Tiangge.

Interviewer: Next question is in what way you can say that Taytay Tiangge is
helpful to the municipality?

Interviewee: It helpful maybe because it makes Taytay popular and known by many
artist and tourist.

Interviewer: Next is do you think that the increasing popularity of Taytay Tiangge
affects the traffic in Taytay?

Interviewee: Yes

Interviewer: Why?

Interviewee: Maybe because of the increase number of vehicles and pedestrians

which makes the road narrow and drivers who overtake other vehicles.

Interviewer: So, what do you think are actions needed to be made to reduce the
traffic in Taytay
55

Integrated Basic Education Department

Interviewee: I think the Taytay should increase the traffic enforcers because some
part in Taytay is not guided by the traffic enforcers when the traffic comes. Also,
people should not cross the road anytime because one time I saw a pedestrian who
almost got hit by a car when he suddenly run to cross the road.

Interviewer: Yeah, those pesky pedestrians are really a pain in the ass. So last
question, what do you think are the ethics needed by the people of Taytay.

Interviewee: People should know to follow the rules in Taytay.
