THE SCIENTIST (ACOUSTIC) - COLDPLAY

An incredibly simple but fantastic song to play on an acoustic guitar!

There seems to be a lot of confusion about the key of the song.
It does state below that a capo is required, but for those that don't have a capo,
I have taken the liberty of putting a set of chords on which do not require a capo
and will allow you to play along with the CD.

(CAPO ON 3RD FRET) (NO CAPO)

Bm7 (x20202) Dm7 (x57565)
G (320003) Bb (688766)

johnc27
i would guess the only problem would be its not in the same key, so you couldnt
play along with the cd, and the vocals would be different, but thats not a bad
problem at all

t-e-a-r-d-r-0-p
That's why you can put the capo on the 3th fret :)

+35
t-e-a-r-d-r-0-p [a] 32

Totte123
It is the same key though. The chords are exactly the same, only your index finger
acts as the capo.

evnmove
Good point, if you transpose up +3 to Dm it'll work OK. Enjoy! Unless you want to
use a capo :D

ddmmatias
Also you now have the "trasport" option, which changes the entire tab to be on your
choosen key. Pretty sweet function if you ask me hehe. Just found it today

NephalemDemon17
I used capo 4 and it sounded exactly like the actual song, so I recommend using
capo 4 instead :D

zindel.tim
This is correctly tabbed for use with capo 3, but it is in 446.0 Hz EADGBE tuning
instead of 440.0 That explains why it feels just a little bit off. So if you change
your guitar tuner to 446 you will be fine!

ste_rigs
thanks for the comments guys and girls. only thing i'll say is i do make it clear
that a capo is required. if you havn't got a capo then just raise the given chords
1 1/2 steps. i.e. Bm7 = Dm7

benwahballs
well ive been trying to learn this on the piano so i go to chordfind.com and i
click on the bottom piano version so u pick the chords and it shows u the
fingering. WELL THEIR WAS NO FREAKING Fsus2! so i downloaded a program and i typed
Fsus2 and pressed enter and then Fsus9 came up and it sound right on the piano

Sus9 and sus2 use the exact same notes but the "sus2" not is and octave higher -
they are an inversion of each other same notes different order

yeeitstheo
fsus2 is just f, c, and g i know that song on piano it's rly cool

0
yeeitstheo [pro] 10

ste_rigs
what's your point? this is a GUITAR tab! tho if you've resolved your piano problem
with your fsus9 then good for you. I've never heard of a guitar chord that ends
with 'sus9'. 'add9' and just '9' on it's own, yes. but never 'sus9'. hence piano
and guitar are DIFFERENT!

+4
ste_rigs [a] 988

lonelydayreamer
sus9 is just a sus2 with the second raised an octave.

+1
lonelydayreamer [a] 132

benwahballs
whats my problem? well man, im not exactly sure i guess im just naturally the type
of peron that people hate. ull hate me for everyhting i say in this right now
because this is a tab commments place not a personal life place. anyways i wasnt
saying that ur wrong i was saying that i had trouble finding something. at chord
find.com in the guitar page, i thought their supposed to have all the guitar chords
their and apparently im wrong.

-1
benwahballs [a] 40

benwahballs
awesome work put in.

+5
benwahballs [a] 40

ste_rigs
sorry man. i wasn't intendin to hav a go. but i really hav never heard of a guitar
chord ending in 'sus9'. i've used those chord finders b4 and sometimes they throw
out the odd strange one. but like i said if you've resolved ur problem i'm happy
for you and glad that my tab gave you a basis of some sort. i don't claim this to
be 100% correct (infact i i've seen the tab in books and it's done different) but i
really think this sounds so good on an acoustic and while its not 100% it can
easily be played along with the cd. Good look with your piano man!!

+4
ste_rigs [a] 988

cesardee
this tab is 99% perfect except that before playing the D chord in the verse replace
the last strum that the G chord would get with this chord: G (320005) just play it
once before the D and it will sound identical to the song.there now its 101%
perfect

+10
cesardee [pro] 10

KotorIII

-33
KotorIII 10

boonior
A capo is a guitar appliance you use to clip unto your guitar to make the guitar
sound higher. For instance, you originally play your guitar on the 1st fret, but
with a capo, you can clip the capo on the 1st fret. When applying the capo on, you
are able to start playing on the 2nd fret, but play it like you would on the 1st
fret. The only difference is, the guitar sounds higher than it should, but it's
just like playing the guitar, only with the capo covering the 1st fret. You can do
this on any other fret as well. Oh by the way, great song and tab.

FatMatt420
It does sound near perfect with the capo... but i played it with my guitar tuned a
half step down with the capo on the 3rd fret... sounds PERFECT. try it out for
yourself.

-1
FatMatt420 [a] 50

christopher.bye
If you were to put the capo on 3rd fret half step down, it would be the same as
capo on 2nd with standard tuning, so why would you waste your time tuning it if you
can just put it on 2nd fret? (even though it really is on 3rd)

Creative-Noise
Hey, just thought i'd clear up some stuff about the chord names mentioned earlier,
not that the 'real' names are that important or anything, just incase someone was
wondering. Unless you want to get overly technical, sus2 sus9 and add9 chords are
all the same. the 2 and 9 are just telling you which note of the scale you put into
the chord, and the 2nd note and 9th note are the same in both major and minor keys.
the only difference is that the 9th is up an octave, but it's the same idea when
strumming guitar. sus9 is a much more uncommon name however. Finally, just a plain
'9' chord implies that you put in the 7th degree as well. Sorry for boring anyone,
great tab.

Elunah
This is a great tab, one of my favorites to play. As people have said, you should
definitely use a capo. When I play this, after each chord, I hit the D string
lightly to imitate how it sounds when Chris Martin plays it on the piano. Also, in
between the G and the D chords, you can quickly play an F note on the high E string
(5 frets down on the 1st string), also to imitate the piano. Great job on this
tab!!!

klinux
First off all, great tab, i really apreciate it specially since there are a lot of
mixed-up versions of this song out there. Unfortunatelly... I don't have a capo...
so for the time being i play the "un-capoed" version. I just wanted to say (as a
complete guitar noob that is), that when you described the F and Fsus2 chords you
did so like this: F (x,8,10,10,10,x) Fsus2 (x,8,10,10,8,x) Now these are ok, but
i play what i hope is a simpler (and hopefully corect) version of these chords: F
(x,3,3,2,1,1) Fsus2 (x,3,3,0,1,1) However i'm not sure if it's 100% corect like
that since they're more like F/C Fsus2/C, so i guess that would mean you'd have to
mute the second string as well... making them smth like: F (x,x,3,2,1,1) Fsus2
(x,x,3,0,1,1) Well...anyway that's how i play it and it sounds pretty ok. Now i
suppose that it's up to every body to chose the voicings they prefer. Hope this
helps out anybody out there trying to play without a capo. Once again great
work! :)

klinux 10

greennickle21

hey man first off awesome tab. second off i found a youtube video that shows him
playing it without a capo, thumbing the low E string and muting the high E. im sure
he uses one for the recorded version, but its just another way for those without a
capo. So the main chords that he plays (from what i can tell) are Dmin
(10,12,12,10,10,x) Bb (6,8,8,7,6,x) F(1,3,3,2,1,x) C(8,10,10,9,8,x) he does some
other things during the "links" but i cant quite tell what... have a look for

Once again thanks for all the comments. I can't believe the response it got as i
only posted it because there were so many versions that didn't seem right to me. to
those who say it isn't perfect; i know it isn't, i never said it was. I will amend
the tab soon due to the lyrics being wrong as it seems to have upset quite a few
people :) and the g chord with the high A note is also a good addition so i'll put
that in too. As for the guy/girl who thought it should be an asus4 instead of a
dsus2... well, we'll have to agree to disagree on that one!

Great job bro. 5* I like to switch it up with a G5 for the G in the chorus which is
320033. I think it makes is sound more full.

0
Diresword [a] 46

epompeii
I do believe that you are missing the asterisk next to the second 'G' cord when you
lay out the cords. I it is different than the normal 'G' and the asterisk G is used
through out. I was able to infer this but just thought I should not it for you.

0

Sorry about that lol ^^ To anyone confused about the asterisk, the list of chords
at the beginning should show the second G as G*, so wherever G* is showen in the
chords you play that second type of G. :)

Trumpetblast
The 9 is a sus nine is the same thing as the 2 an octave up, which given that
guitar has to move things around because of the limitations of strings means
they're basically the same thing. I know this is forever old for me to just now
see, but its pretty common to see those things. When in doubt, add or subtract 7
because that number is different but the notes are the same :)

The capo simply moves the fret up one half step at a time. When you have a capo
installed. Treat it as if the fret it is on is now the open position or "0". Play
each chord as you normally would. pretending the capo isn't even there. Beautiful
concept really.

Good job!

whitemouse100
terrible tab,the 1st chord is right then it all goes wrong, this song is played
with a capo on the 1st fret. verse chords are: Dm Bb F C.

whitemouse100 [a] 70

sash.x
well done! you just wrote down the same exact same chords transposed -9 . therefore
if this one is rubbish so is yours

and it sounds like crap.

leviathanroqs
excellent tab !! but i want to make a little add to it when you are playing G:
320003 at the end of it you should play this: 320005 and then change to D: x00232

+2
leviathanroqs [a] 167

radioheadfreak
umm whitemouse if u knew anything about music you would realize a Bm with a capo on
3 is the same as a Dm which is the key it is played in, w/o any capo. This tab was
good, it was a little different than most but it sounded good and was right so
props to the tabber. Whitemouse you are an idiot

+9
radioheadfreak [a] 60

Gumbercules
This tab is definetly the most different out there, and it is by far the best. Try
playing another tab next to this one and you'll laugh at how far superior this
version is. NICE JOB!!!!

Schane
WHITEMOUSE was actually right, its in the key of F, and the progression is VI, IV,
I, V7......so it is. Dmi, Eb, F, C but it didnt have capo, well at least i dont
use one, these are super easy chords!! you dont need a capo

Schane 10

I mean Dmi, Bb, F, C NOT Eb, my bad

mapeterz
why wouldn't you use a capo? They're the most useful things out there! I don't get
why some people have problems with them? Look how easy it makes this song.. playing
guitar isn't about making it hard for yourself.. it's about making it piss easy. If
you wanna 'woo' a girl she's not gonna be arsed that you used a capo! And to be
fair what other reason do we play guitar to girls but to get in their pants, lol.

mapeterz [a] 537

crawfo
great tab man. even if the non-capo version is "correct" i dont rekon it sounds as
good as the capo on. sounds excellent

0
crawfo 10

misc1
mapeterz is absolutely ****ing right, lol. Capos actually make you look more
musically advanced by saying "oh, it raises the song to the key to G" and that
means so very little to a lot of people. Great tab, i play it along with the song
and it sounds perfect. 5 stars, baby. Long live using guitars as a key to chicks
pants :)

Wow, where did this come? Got stormed all of a sudden... Was expecting to see
Stairway at the the top... :P Good song, nevertheless; great tab. 5/5. Oh, and the
Whitemouse comment was 5 and a half years ago, so I think we can let it go... Good
job, man.

JAM92
wow. what's with you guys and dissing Coldplay? Coldplay's an amazing band. And if
you hate them so much, why would you click on the link? And wtf is with the
homophobia? honestly guys, grow up. & this was probably put in the top 100 by view

i have a question. what does "NC" means here? Oh take me back to the stars... p.s :
im a newbie. =)

No chord

+3
Crucialjmoneyjr [pro] 10

Creative-Noise
The "NC" most often stands for "No Chord" in modern music. And for the record,
the line should be "Oh take me back to the start". Not "stars".

Creative-Noise [a] 211

terrible most of the chords are wrong

Tab incomplete. Why? put in all of the lyrics and the rest of this is because it
needs to have twenty words

Really great chords, but i think it's really bad that the whole song isnt there for
those who dont know the lyrics.

CanadianBacons
Bruh whitemouse do you even play guitar by ear? this tab is very accurate and the
chords you say should be the verse sound like the chorus of "I love the way you
lie" by Eminem. And if you dont like this tab go make your own then.
