1. NATIONAL CLEANER
PRODUCTION CENTER (NCPC)
1.1 INTRODUCTION
National Cleaner Production Center foundation
(NCPC) aims to introduce and promote Cleaner
Production (CP) techniques and processes for
Pollution Prevention at source along with the
Integrated waste management. It was
established by United Nations Industrial
Development Organization (UNIDO) in 1999
with Collaboration of United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nation Development Programme (UNDP), EPA’s,
Ministry of Climate Change (MOCC) and Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources (MNPR).
It is registered under Section 42 of Companies Ordinance, 1984 by Government of Pakistan and
is Certified by Pakistan Center for Philanthropy (PCP) and Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
Cleaner Production provides an integrated preventive environmental strategy to processes and
products in order to reduce risk to human and the environment. Through the CP program, NCPC
is bridging the gap between competitive industrial production, and environmental concerns. This
initiative is the first of its kind in Pakistan with the aim of introducing Cleaner Production
Technologies & Cleaner Products. The organization aims to be acknowledged in the field of
environmental management as an innovative, dynamic and distinctive contributor. To this end,
NCPC will motivate its community to establish and promote an environmentally responsible
culture that maximizes the effective use of National resources and a Shift in Thinking towards
waste minimization at source by the strategy of Reduce, Recover and Reuse

1.2 PURPOSE OF VISIT TO NCPC

The site of our visit was “National Cleaner Production Center” located at Rawalpindi. The
objective of our visit is to explore their EMS, what objectives and targets are appropriate for the
industry, Environmental Management Programs regarding municipal waste, agricultural waste,
hospital waste. Different environmental projects, NCPC has signed with other organizations which
include “Morgah Biodiversity Park” project, Green initiative, Green Management and Tree
Plantation. Different events were organized by NCPC like World Volunteer’s Day and Renewable
Energy Festival at QAU, National Environment Mela 2018 celebrated at Ayub National Park,
Dengue Awareness, PCP regional Festival, Green Internship Program, No littering Awareness, lab
safety training, Environmental Mela, World First Aid Day, World Water Day. To know how
NCPC manages the waste material from different sectors? How to conserve the natural resources
and to convert the solar energy into other form of energy.
2. SUMMARY
Our visit to NCPC (National Cleaner production center) is very informative and it help us to
understand, why EMS is important and how EMS play its role in our environment. During the tour
we visited Morgah Biodiversity Park where all species of pothar area are conserve, Solar cooking
and solar box, use energy directly from the sun and save our nonrenewable natural resources like
wood and natural gas. Biogas plant provide us with two important resources organic fertilizer (for
plants and crops) and gas (for domestic use and other purpose). Incineration plant which deal with
the organic waste and make our environment free for the pollution up to some extent. Whereas,
Sun Dial tells us the exact time using the sun rays due to its specific structure and angles.

3. SITES OF VISIT
3.1 MORGAH BIODIVERSITY PARK
About 268 Plant species are grown in the Park and all the plants are indigenous to Potwar region
& their Seeds / seedling are collected from Wild. Morgah Biodiversity Park holds one of the largest
Aviaries in Pakistan. Eight species of Birds are inhabited in it. Most of them like Peacock, Rock
Pigeons & Geese are propagating here successfully. The main purpose of the Biodiversity Park is
to reduce poverty, cultivation of medicinal plant and to establish links with herbal medicines
producing organizations.

3.2 SOLAR COOKING

It operates with the help of parabolic heater which is set at specific angle to have maximum sun
radiations. The purpose of parabolic mirror is to converge the solar radiations at a point. It is a
slow cooking process but efficient. The parabolic mirror is made up of fabric material. It is more
efficient in winter as compared to summer because direct ultra violet radiations direct fall on the
mirror. Its temperature is about 350°C.

3.3 SOLAR BOX COOKER

It is a device which uses the energy of direct sunlight to cook or pasteurize drinks and other food
materials. It has box like shape the upper frame have two glass which act as insulators in it, a base
plate which is of black color, the purpose of being black is to absorb more solar radiations. It takes
double time as compared to the parabolic solar cooker.

3.4 BIOGAS PLANT

The objective of biogas plant is to give organic fertilizers and gas that is used for domestic purpose,
which is supplied through pipe lines. If we directly provide animal waste (manure) to the plants, it
harms the plant roots due to the presence of toxic chemicals and weed seeds eaten by animals is
responsible for weeds growth. The source of animal waste is cattle manure. The cemented tank is
filled with cattle waste and water with same proportion, and the height of metallic closed tank tells
how much gas is stored in it. The volume of tank is 5 cubic meter.

3.5 INCINERATION PLANT

Incineration is a waste treatment process that involves the combustion of organic substances
contained the waste material. The waste material is converted into ash, flue gas and heat. It has
three chambers operating at NCPC. The first chamber attains temperature of 950°C-1050°C.
Second chamber attains the temperature of 1150°C-1200°C. Third chamber is for recovery of
particles, 100 burning of material and gives 3-5kg ash. The organic waste comes from Potwar
area.

3.6 SUN DIAL

It tells the exact time throughout year. It is designed at a specific angle after taking average results
of 2-3 years data to minimize the error, having the margin of ±5 due to seasonal changes. The
shadow of the clock tells us the time. Its range is from
