Sir Arthur Guedel(1883‐1956)
⚫ Arthur Ernest Guedel was born on June 13, 1883 in
Cambridge City, Indiana to John Guedel and Mary.
⚫ During his teens, he had an accident at work that
amputated three fingers from his right hand.
⚫  His family was unable to afford high school, so he taught
himself and was admitted to the Indiana Medical College
of Purdue at Indianapolis, which would later become
Indiana University School of Medicine, in 1903.
⚫  He graduated in 1908 with first honors and began his
internship at Indianapolis City Hospital.
⚫ Guedel married Florence Fulton in 1909.
⚫ They had two children: Marian (b. 1912) and Gretchen
(1915‐1940).

⚫ Guedel died in California in 1956 at the age of 72.

⚫ Guedel was known for his studies on the uptake and
distribution of inhalational anesthetics, as well for defining
the various stages of general anesthesia.

⚫ The Guedel pattern airway  which is still being used to
facilitate breathing is named after him.
  WORLD WAR 1
⚫ Guedel served as First Lieutenant (and later Captain) in the U.
S. Army from 1917‐1919.
⚫  During his time, he worked at the American Expeditionary
Forces hospitals in Chaumont and Vittles, France.
⚫  Guedel was responsible for overseeing up to six hospitals at
one time. For this reason, he became known as the
"motorcycle anesthetist" because he would travel to the
various hospitals by motorcycle.
⚫ Guedel taught various medical personnel, from nurses to
orderlies, how to manage anesthesia.
⚫  Because of this, he defined the stages of anesthesia, now
known as Guedel's classification.
Clinical staging of Anesthesia
 Key Medical Attributions:
•   Developed the first inflatable cuffs for
endotracheal tubes from the fingers of rubber
gloves.
•   In 1933 Guedel designed a metal pharyngeal
airway moulded in rubber to prevent occlusion by
biting.
•   The ‘Guedel’ airway has stood the test of time
for nearly 80 years.

⚫ Guedel laryngeal plug:
⚫ The laryngeal plug is a little‐
known device developed by
Arthur E. Guedel in the 1930s.
The device was an alternative to
the inflatable cuff used on
tracheal tubes.
⚫ Guedel did not publish a
description of the laryngeal
plug and the most detailed
description of it was published
by Gilbert Troup, an Australian
anaesthetist.
 Dunked dog experiment
•  In the 1920s, Guedel began
experimenting with how to make a
cuffed endotracheal airway. He
corresponded greatly with his colleague
and friend, Dr Ralph M. Waters about
inventing a cuffed endotracheal tube.
•  In 1926 Guedel performed the ‘dunked dog’
experiment. He anaesthetised, intubated and
immersed his own dog (nicknamed ‘Airway‘)
at the beginning of a lecture he was giving.
• Following the demonstration, he revived the
dog, allowed him to waken, shake‐off and exit
the theatre to the applause of the audience.
• The picture depicts intubated dog being
ventilated through Water’s To&Fro Cannister,
immersed under water.
CONTRIBUTIONS.
He developed stages of Ether Anesthesia used ethyl
chloride for rapid induction. And tried Nitous oxide and
Air mixture for obstetric analgesia.
He also pioneered  development of cyclopropane (C6H6).
He worked on  inventions of newer inhalation agents and
in collaboration with waters. He developed cyclopropane
(C6H6)
He developed  addictions to barbiturates and
amphetamines to control his insomnia.
Later He over came his addiction by controlled treatment
and would later educate physicians regarding the risks of
addiction.
