1. Name the famous scientist who discovered the law of gravitation.

2. What is Physics? What is the origin of the word physics?

3. What is the nature of position-time graph for a uniform motion?

4. What is the unit vector perpendicular to the plane of vectors A and B?

5. Show that if the force acting on a particle is zero, its momentum will remain unchanged.

6. What is a light year? How many parsecs are there in 1 light year?

7. Describe the parallax method to find the distance of an inferior planet from earth.

8. Define the term work. Calculate the work done by a variable force. Is work done a scalar or a vector quantity?

9. What are conservative and non-conservative forces? Give one example of each.

10. Define kinetic energy. Give its units and dimensional formula.

11. Although gravitational force is the weakest of all the four fundamental forces, it governs the large scale
motion in the universe. Explain how.

12. Distinguish between mass and weight (3 points).

13. Which of the following is the most precise device for measuring length:

(i) A vernier calliper with 20 divisions on the sliding scale

(ii) A screw gauge of pitch 1 mm and 100 divisions on the circular scale

(iii) An optical instrument that can measure length to within a wavelength of visible light?

14. Define the following terms and write the SI units:

(a) Displacement, and

(b) Instantaneous velocity.

15. Draw the following graphs between distance and time of an object in case of

(a) For a body at rest

(b) For a body moving with uniform velocity

(c) For a body moving with constant acceleration.

16. On a two-lane road, car A is travelling with a speed of 36 kmh -1. Two cars B and C approach car A in
opposite directions with a speed of 54 kmh -1each. At a certain instant, when the distance AB is equal to AC,
both being 1 km, B decides to overtake A before C does. What minimum acceleration of car B is required to
avoid an accident?

17. State and prove triangle law of vector addition.

18. Define angular velocity and angular acceleration. Derive an expression for centripetal acceleration of a
uniform circular motion of an object.

19. In a harbour, wind is blowing at the speed of 72 km/h and the flag on the mast of the boat anchored in the
harbour flutters along the N-E direction. If the boat starts moving at a speed of 51km/h to the north, what is
the direction of the flag on the mast of the boat?

20. State law of conservation of momentum and prove it by using third law of motion.

21. Define the term impulse. Give its SI unit. Prove that impulse of a force is equal to the change in momentum.

22. A truck starts from rest and accelerates uniformly with 2.0 ms -2. At t=10 s, a stone is dropped by a person
standing on the top of the truck (6m high from the ground). What are the (i) velocity, and (ii) acceleration of
the stone at t=11 s? Neglect air resistance. Take g = 10 ms -2.

23. Ravi came to stay in a multi-storeyed building. He noticed that motor supplying water to the second floor has
power rating X kW while of that supplying water to 8th floor has Y kW. He asked his father the reason behind
the difference of the power ratings. His father explained him the reason.

(a) What values does Ravi possess?

(b) Which power rating is more X or Y?

(c) A motor pumps up 1000 kg of water through length of 10 m in 5 s. if the efficiency of the motor is 60%,
calculate the power of the motor in kilowatt.

24. Derive the following equations of motion for uniformly accelerated motion from velocity-time graph:

(a) V = u + at (b) s = ut + 1/2 at2 (c) v2 – u2 = 2as

OR

Define relative velocity of one object w.r.t .another object. Draw position time graph for two objects moving
along a straight line, when their relative velocity is (i) zero and (ii) positive.

25. Define centripetal acceleration. Derive an expression for the centripetal acceleration of a body moving with
uniform speed v along a circular path of radius r. Explain how it acts along the radius towards the centre of
the circular path.

OR

(a) Analytically, find the resultant R of two vectors A and B inclined at an angle θ.

(b) Find the angle between two vectors P and Q if resultant of the vectors is given by R 2 = P2 + Q2

26. Define angle of friction and angle of repose. Show that both are numerically equal.

OR

What is meant by banking of roads? What is the need of banking of road? Obtain an expression for the
maximum speed with which a vehicle can safely negotiate a curved road banked at an angle θ. The coefficient
of friction between the roads and wheels is µ.
