HOW TO USE THIS COMPETENCY BASED LEARNING MATERIAL

Welcome to the module in Prepare Pipes for Installation. This module

contains training materials and activities for you to complete.

The unit of competency “Preparing Pipes for Installation” contains

knowledge, skills and attitudes required for Plumbing. It is one of the core
competencies at National Certificate level II (NCII).

You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to

complete each learning outcome of the module. In each learning outcome are
Information Sheets and Instruction Sheets (Reference Materials for further
reading to help you better understand the required activities.) Follow these
activities on your own and answer the self-check at the end of each learning
outcome. You may remove a blank answer sheet at the end of each module (or
get one from your facilitator/trainer) to write your answers for each self-check.

If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask your facilitator for assistance.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may already have some or most of the knowledge and skills covered
in this learner’s guide because you have:

 been working for some time

 Already completed training in this area.

If you can demonstrate to your trainer that you are competent in a

particular skill or skills, talk to him/her about having them formally recognized
so you don’t have to do the same training again. If you have a qualification or
Certificate of Competency from previous training, show it to your trainer. If the
skills you acquired are still current and relevant to the unit/s of competency
they may become part of the evidence you can present for RPL. If you are not
sure about the currency of your skills, discuss this with your trainer.

At the end of this module is a Learner’s Diary. Use this diary to record
important dates, jobs undertaken and other workplace events that will assist
you in providing further details to your trainer or assessor. A Record of
Achievement is also provided for your trainer to complete once you complete the
module.

Plumbing Blue Print Reading

Learning Objectives:

After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to

explain, identify standard plumbing symbols, abbreviation.

INTRODUCTION

In addition to practical training with tools and materials, a plumber must

learn to the plumbing symbols and abbreviation. It is difficult for a plumber to
make any interpretation of a plan if he/ she do not know the plumbing symbols
and abbreviation indicated in the plumbing layout or print and specifications

SYMBOLS AND ABBREVIATIONS

A common set of symbols are used on architectural prints to represent

materials, building objects, and various dimensions and locations. Piping
symbols are used by architect and mechanical engineers on prints to represent
plumbing fixtures and piping systems, as well as pipe fittings and valves used to
construct plumbing systems.
A print is a drawing showing a building structure and all of its
components. Prints are also referred to as blueprints or working drawings.
Specifications are written information that supplements the prints and
provides additional details that could not be shown on the prints or that require
additional description such as information on legal responsibilities, insurance,
quality of workmanship, and other necessary details such as brands and types
of plumbing fixtures and equipment. See figure 1.1

Note: Symbols and Abbreviations in plumbing trade may appear similar in

other qualification but it may have different meaning and application.

Plumbing Materials

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to identify

and select plumbing materials needed in a specific job.

INTRODUCTION:

Plumbing as defined as the installation of pipes, fitting, fixtures and other

apparatus in conveying and supplying water into different parts of the building
and to dispose and discharge waste water and other substances out of the
building. This module tackles about the different plumbing materials those
plumbing codes permit to use.

PLUMBING MATERIALS KINDS/ TYPES AND CLASSIFICATION

The Revised Plumbing Code of the Philippines specifies the type of piping
materials that may be used for each plumbing system. Plumbing code bases of
selecting materials are the soil types, ground condition, local rainfall and frost
or freezing conditions. Consult the plumbing code to ensure that only code-
approve material is being used for plumbing system.
Pipe is a cylindrical tube used for conveying potable water, wastewater,
waterborne waste, and air from one location to another.
There are numerous kinds of pipes available for plumbing installation but
so far, the most popular and commonly used are:

Note: Refer to the Revised Plumbing Code of the Philippines found at the
learning resource area for the materials approve by the code.

Hand and Power Tools safety

Learning Objectives:

After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to

explain, identify and perform safety handling of hand tools.

INTRODUCTION:

In this information sheet contains OH& S on handling both hand and

power tools. One’s a plumber practice safe handling of tools he/ she can avoid
accident, injury which may result into death or damage to property. On the
other hand if the plumber did not practice such safety handling of tools it may
have a reverse result.

HAND AND POWER TOOL SAFETY

Plumbing tools are classified into two; the HAND TOOLS and the POWER
TOOLS.

Differences between hand and power tools:

– Hand tools have no power source, other than the physical force
applied by the user. Hand tools include anything from axes to
hammers, and screwdrivers to wrenches

– Power Tools require a non-human power source to function

properly--e.g. External (electricity, compressed air, etc.) or
Internal (battery pack, internal combustion engine, etc.).

Both kinds of tools require specific safety precautions or rules to be
followed; yet some rules will apply to both.

There are five basic rules that apply to all tools used either hand or
power and general safety rules that govern with the use of hand tools

5 Basic Rules

 Keep all tools in good working order

 Use the tool only for what it is designed to do

 Examine the tool for damage before each use

 Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when operating any

tool

 Always wear the appropriate PPE when operating any tool

GENERAL “Hand Tool” SAFETY

RULES

 Carry all sharp tools in a holster or sheath

 Tag worn, damaged or defective tools and do not use them

 Do not perform “makeshift” repairs to tools

 Do not use cheater bars

The Greatest Hazards of Hand Tools: Misuse/Improper Maintenance

 Using a screwdriver as a chisel

 Could cause the tip to break and fly, hitting either the operator or
bystanders

 A wooden handle on tool such as a hammer or an axe is loose, splintered
or cracked
 The tool head could fly off and strike the operator or bystanders
 Impact tools, e.g. chisels and wedges, are unsafe if their heads are
“mushroomed”
 The heads might shatter on impact sending sharp fragments flying
 Wrenches must not be used if the jaws are sprung, cracked or twisted
 The wrench could slip off

SAFETY RULES for SPECIFIC Hand Tools

HAMMERS

 Use a claw hammer for pulling nails

 Do not strike a hardened steel surface with a claw hammer
 Do not strike one hammer against another hammer
 Do not use a hammer as a wedge or pry-bar

CHISELS

 Use only chisels that are sharp

 Do not use chisels with a mushroom head
 Use only hammers that are designed for use with chisels

SAWS

 Do not carry the saw by the blade

 Do not use any saw that has a dull saw blade
 Keep control of the saw by releasing downward pressure at the end of
each stroke

SCREWDRIVERS

 Always ensure the screwdriver fits the head of the screw

 Do not hold the work piece against your body while using the screwdriver
 Do not use a screwdriver as a punch, chisel, pry bar or nail puller
 Do not use a screwdriver to test the charge of a battery
 Use blue handled screwdrivers when working on electrical
