Subject: General Mathematics

Grade & Section: 11-STEM 2 Schedule: 12:40-1:40

For the first quarter, our teacher discussed about “Functions and their Graphs”. At first, I
was hesitant if I could survive this semester knowing that we have specialized subject, Pre-
Calculus, and I’m just an average student. But our teacher in General Mathematics, T. Crystal,
always make sure that every one of her student understands the lesson.

Our first lesson is all about basic functions and graphs. In this lesson, we are asked to
find the domain and the range. I admit that somehow, I find it hard to determine the domain
especially the range. With the help of my classmates and of course, T. Crystal, little by little I
could find the domain and range. My favourite subtopics in this lesson are the Operations and
Compositions on Functions. The difference between the two is that Operations on Function uses
mathematical operations to combine two functions. Composition on Functions, on the other
hand, is another way to combine functions but it uses the output of one function as the input of
the other.

Other subtopics are the interval notation and piecewise function. On the first day I’ve
heard about the piecewise function, I don’t have any idea on what it is all about. I find it hard at
first, but as the lesson goes by, I understand it now. With the help of piecewise function, I can
now distinguish the domain and the range easier than before.

Lesson two is all about “Rational Expression and Functions”. We are able to learn how to
solve equation with rational functions. We also tackled about finding the x and y intercept, and
the vertical and horizontal asymptote. In finding the vertical asymptote, we need to get the
denominator of the rational function , find the root, and then graph. While in horizontal
asymptote, if n<m, y=0; if n=m, y is equal to An over Bm; and if n>m, there is no horizontal
asymptote. Lastly, we are taught how to graph a rational function.

In this quarter, we also have problem solving. We need to find the perimeter and area of a
rectangle, square, and even circle. We also involved ourselves in age problems. Personally, I like
solving problems like that. I like finding the age of x that is four times older than y.

I still have a lot to review on the lessons in this quarter. I need to study more on finding
the domain and the range, as well as the other topics that I find it hard to answer. I could say that
I have learned a lot on this quarter, and hopefully I can apply my knowledge on the quarterly
exams.

On the other side, I know in myself that I strive hard to understand every lesson in this
subject. But, I also know that I’m just an ordinary student and have an average level of
intelligence. I expect that my grade in General Mathematics would at least 84 and above. I’m
expecting this kind of grade because I know that I’ve answered those basic skills and getting at
least three points and I also answered most of the problem solving activity correctly.

Also, most of my formative assessments are passable, as well as my score on the first
mastery test. I am also passing my prompt in this subject, so I think I don’t have any problem
regarding my grade in this subject. Well, except on the result of my quarterly exam.

One of my favourite subjects is General Math, not just because of the lesson but because
of how our teacher copes with her students. I’m hoping that, somehow, my expected grade is
what I would get in the end, but of course, I will study hard in order to fulfil it. I’m looking
forward for the second quarter and expect that it would be challenging yet, we will have a good
time studying every lesson.
