HYPOGLYCEMIC POTENTIAL OF COSTUS IGNEUS NAK IN

DIABETIC RATS

INTRODUCTION

Diabetes is a disorder that many people from different age groups experience. Since the body is

not able to produce enough insulin which causes the blood sugar levels to be abnormally high.

This puts them in a risk of accumulating various diseases such as stroke, heart attack and chronic

kidney failure. The treatment for diabetes is expensive since constant monitoring and

prescription medicines are needed but there are also alternatives that are found in nature. A plant

found in India which they call “insulin plant’ or scientifically known as costus igneus nak has

been said to have high levels of insulin and since this plant can be massively reproduced if found

to be effective in lowering the blood sugar levels. It can be used as an alternative in treating

diabetes especially for people who do not have an easy access to pharmacies and those who are

unfortunate in terms of societal standards. Costus Igneus Nak is a promising plant in terms of

combating diabetes and is also showing its potentials to different researchers. Many traditional

plants have showcased their profound abilities in search for possible source of a new oral

hypoglycemic compounds to be studied for further development. This plant (costus igneus nak)

is one of the top candidates besides many others.

Therefore, this study will help the researchers know more about its effectiveness, structure and

the needed dosages to successfully lower the blood sugar levels that are present in the body. This
study also aims to help other people understand and realize the value costus igneus nak as a

medicinal plant.

Statement of the Problem:

The main objective of this study is to test the levels of effectiveness of costus igneus nak in

lowering blood sugar levels in diabetic rats.

Specifically it aimed to answer the following:

1. Will there be a significant amount of decrease in blood sugar levels when the plant is

extracted and given orally?

1.1. Is there a difference between regular insulin and the insulin found in costus igneus

nak?

1.2. Will it be able to compare with other medicines found in the pharmacies like

metformin and etc?

1.3. How is it safer than pharmaceutical made drugs?

METHODOLOGY

Research Questions :

1.How does the insulin plant interact with the blood sugar levels?

2.How much dosage of the plant is needed to equate medicines like metformin?

3.Will it be as effective as the lab-generated medicines in lowering the body’s blood sugar
levels?

Scope and Limitations :

Scope : Type 2 diabetes, prevention.

Limitations : Not tested on humans
