 Types of display devices

used in digital circuit.

1. LED Display

It is a type of display that uses light emitting diodes. This flat panel display is today used in
many applications like to display traffic signs, displays of railway stations, television display
etc. These display devices are commonly used for the indication of alarms,
inputs and timers. There are two ways by we can connect LEDs to
microcontroller unit. Those two ways are active high logic and active low logic.
Active high logic means LED will be ON when port pin is 1 and LED will be
OFF when pin is 0. Active high means LED will be OFF when port pin is 1 and
LED will be ON when port pin is 0.

One of the largest LED display in the world is located in China, which is 500m long. Also
the largest LED television is the Center Hung Video Display at Cowboys Stadium. This
television has dimensions of 49m x 22m.

2. Liquid Crystal Display(LCD)

This display generally depends upon the light modulating properties of liquid crystals. The
low power consumption makes it good to use in all types of electronic equipments that are
battery powered. LCDs are electronically modulated and are made of liquid crystals which
are arrayed in front of the light source to produce images in color.

The LCD is much more informative output device than a single LED. The LCD
is a display that can easily show characters on its screen. They have a couple
of lines to large displays. Some LCDs are specially designed for specific
applications to display graphic images. 16×2 LCD (HD44780) module is
commonly used. These modules are replacing 7-segments and other multi-
segment LEDs. LCD can be easily interfaced with microcontroller to display a
message or status of the device. It can be operated in two modes: 4-bit mode
and 8-bit mode. This LCD has two registers namely command register and
data register. It is having three selection lines and 8 data lines. By connecting
the three selection lines and data lines with the microcontroller, the messages
can be displayed on LCD.

3. 7-segment Display.

The 7-segment display, also written as “seven segment display”,

consists of seven LEDs (hence its name) arranged in a rectangular
fashion as shown. Each of the seven LEDs is called a segment
because when illuminated the segment forms part of a numerical digit
(both Decimal and Hex) to be displayed. An additional 8th LED is
sometimes used within the same package thus allowing the indication
of a decimal point, (DP) when two or more 7-segment displays are
connected together to display numbers greater than ten.
Each one of the seven LEDs in the display is given a positional
segment with one of its connection pins being brought straight out of
the rectangular plastic package. These individually LED pins are
labelled from a through to g representing each individual LED. The
other LED pins are connected together and wired to form a common
pin.
So by forward biasing the appropriate pins of the LED segments in a
particular order, some segments will be light and others will be dark
allowing the desired character pattern of the number to be generated
on the display. This then allows us to display each of the ten decimal
digits 0 through to 9 on the same 7-segment display.
The displays common pin is generally used to identify which type of 7-
segment display it is. As each LED has two connecting pins, one
called the “Anode” and the other called the “Cathode”, there are
therefore two types of LED 7-segment display called: Common
Cathode (CC) and Common Anode (CA).
The difference between the two displays, as their name suggests, is
that the common cathode has all the cathodes of the 7-segments
connected directly together and the common anode has all the anodes
of the 7-segments connected together and is illuminated as follows.
4..Quantum Dot Display
Quantum dot display is a type of display technology similar to the OLEDs. Here the light is
supplied earlier, so that more efficient displays are obtained. Quantum dots are considered
to be electro-activ The idea of using quantum dots as a light source emerged in the 1990s.
Early applications included imaging using QD infrared photodetectors , light emitting
diodes and single-color light emitting devices.[7] Starting from early 2000, scientists started
to realize the potential of developing quantum dot for light sources and displays. [8]
QDs are either photo-emissive (photoluminescent) or electro-emissive (electroluminescent)
allowing them to be readily incorporated into new emissive display architectures. [9] Quantum
dots naturally produce monochromatic light, so they are more efficient than white light
sources when color filtered and allow more saturated colors that reach nearly 100% of Rec.
