Situated at the heart of Muttrah, on Oman’s largest harbor, the new fish market is a tribute to
both the past and the future of Oman. The city of Muttrah is known for its long history of
commercial trade, its characteristic port, and long-standing fishery traditions. Located close
to the city's original fish market, built in 1960, the new market marks a continuity of the
region's trade and fishing traditions, while also fulfilling Oman's need to accommodate for
the country's growing tourism industry.

Merging tradition with innovation, the 4,000 square meter fish market is designed to
sympathetically unite the old and the new. The generous space creates a public meeting
space where local fishermen and worldly tourist from all over the world meet under the same
roof. The architectural concept is inspired by the playful qualities of light and shadow through
the shape of a double radial wall defining the spine of the new fish market. Seen from afar,
one can observe how the curved wall relates to the radial shape of the corniche and the
wider bay area, interacting with the street by exposing the stairs from the roof terraces in the
openings along the corniche. Referencing both the former waterfront and the continuation of
the corniche, the fish market defines the boundaries of public space, interconnecting the city,
the mountains, and the waterfront.

When entering the fish market, visitors are immerged in a lively marketplace which offers
more than 100 fish sellers and cutters, as well as a new market for vegetables and fruit. The
new facility also offers refrigeration, packaging, and storage spaces alongside offices, coffee
shops, and a rooftop restaurant. Written by Snøhetta

Located in a community in western Aarhus that is seeing an influx of redevelopment and
revitalisation, the sprawling Gellerup Sports and Culture Campus will comprise a library,
facilities for local residents, a playful activity house for circus, soccer, school and climbing -
and potentially a unique public swimming pool. The campus is expected to attract more than
600,000 visitors annually.
When designing the campus, our intention was to create a welcoming place that is open and
relevant for the local community, while also appealing to residents from across Aarhus and
the world. We hope to draw people into the campus's various elements with architecture
that is rooted in the local environment, but also speaks to an international audience.

Growing Gellerup
Located in the western part of Aarhus Kommune, Gellerup is the city's most culturally diverse
district with residents relocating to the neighbourhood from all corners of the globe. The
Gellerup Sports and Culture Campus is a part of the city's ambitious Master Plan, a project
aimed at improving the quality of life and safety in the area in collaboration with the
community's residents.
The winning proposal presented an inviting building structure that breaks up the city's
existing boxy grid with an open, flowing layout that strengthens community ties,
neighbourhood democracy and cohesion. The architecture supports openness and creates
space for people to meet each other by overlapping buildings and spaces in an intuitive way.

From roundabout to urban agora

Today, Place Schuman is a heavily trafficked roundabout in the heart of Brussels. Surrounded by the main institutions of the
European Union, including the European Council and the European Commission, Place Schuman constitutes the entrance to
the EU. In the future, it will be transformed into an urban space and meeting point for the entire EU. The project consists of an

Master plan for the transformation of Milan’s former 2015 World Expo
Carlo Ratti Associati (CRA), together with Lendlease, has won the international competition
for a 1 million square meter master plan to reimagine the former site of Milan World Expo
2015. The winning team's vision of a theme Park for Science, Knowledge and Technology
was selected by Arexpo, the public company that owns the site situated in the northwest
section of Italy's cultural and financial capital.

ONE-MILE LONG LINEAR PARK: The park draws on the World Expo 2015's landmark, the
Decumanus - the east-west road recalling the traditional axes of Roman cities. In the new
neighborhood, the Decumanus, previously covered in asphalt, is converted into a one-mile
long linear park, one of the longest in Europe, which becomes the social center of the
neighborhood.

A CITY FOR SELF-DRIVING VEHICLES: The project's pioneering spirit extends to the field of
mobility. The area's streets and roads, starting from the Decumanus, will, over time, become
accessible to self-driving vehicles exclusively, in a move that anticipates the widespread
changes brought about by autonomous cars. The result will be an increasingly shared
approach to transportation, with fewer vehicles needed to satisfy the community's mobility
demands, and with positive consequences expected in terms of less traffic, improved
environmental quality, and new business opportunities.

THE COMMON GROUND: Following the principle that much of a city's health comes from the
vibrancy of its public space, the project proposes a Common Ground - a two-floor high space
all across the master plan - animated by a lively mix of plazas, pedestrian areas, shared
vegetable gardens, laboratories and retail facilities. People can seamlessly move between
public and private spaces or open and secluded areas. Written by Carlo Ratti Associati

Empty and open the space and fill it with culture, sports and people
The site is facing the urban area on one side and the nature on the other side. This building
should be a place that plays the role of connection on the boundary of the urban area and the
nature and at the same time the space to accept various ideas and activities of the youth.
With the mass plan adapting the surrounding roads and the site type and the layout plan that
empties and opens the space and fills it with people and culture, we composed various
external theme spaces. The borderless pedestrian access plan allows users to access freely
from any direction. The internal movement line was planned with simple and clear system by
dividing the movement line of administrator and user.
The zoning plan divided by area and function enables to respond various programs and
change in the future and connect each other if possible. Once entered into the building, it is
available to move the desired space easily and comfortably and the space is arranged
independently by each function which does not interfere but can be connected organically.

Lee Hocheol Literary Museum as a resting area, located in Dulle-gil of Mt.Bukhan.
While walking the Dulle-gil of Mt.Bukhan, we meet the ecology park of Mt.Bukhan. Lee
Hocheol Literary Museum is the place that reflects the original type of the house considering
the context of surrounding residential environment. It provides the publicity as a resting area
where anyone can pass the Dulle-gil through this place and take a rest in the nature. Like the
literature of teacher Lee Hocheol, we approach the concept of this building as an open house
with the story of people who overcame the historic memory of division of Korea peninsula
but who are simple-minded and warm hearted.

Lee Hocheol Literary Museum was planned focusing on the connectivity with Mt.Bukhan.
We drew the existing various ways formed into internal space of the literary museum and
segmented the space according to the condition of slope and the shape of land. Through this,
we planned the architecture that the green zone and the way of people are connected to the
inside of the literary museum and adapted to the surrounding environment.

The entrance gate of Lee Hocheol Literary Museum is divided into 3 parts. The main gate is
available to reach by car from Bulgwang Station of subway line No.3. The second gate is the
way to enter into the internal courtyard of the house in the Dulle-gil of Mt.Bukhan and the
third gate is the restroom that plays the role of public building which is connected to the
ecology park of Mt.Bukhan.

The landscape arranged in the inside of building is connected with the park organically and
draw the park and Mt.Bukhan into the inside of the building. Lee Hocheol Literary Museum is
connected with the surrounding area and plays a role as a part of the nature. Three
movement lines (administrator/users of park/exhibition visitors) have each program and
allow visitors to see the organically connected space each other. On the 1F, there are a cafe,
restroom and external exhibition space while on the 2F, planned as a space available to use
as variable exhibition space. Written by MNLP Architects

Making a relationship with the surrounding area by the axis

The existing museum is located toward the Namhan River and the front of building is open toward the Namhan River. The newly
built museum is aside from the axis not to interrupt this structure but making a connecting axis with the Maam on the opposite
side of the river.
The Museum as a landscape in the scenery
We made this museum to be recognized as a landscape in the scenery rather than a building. We thought of Yeoju, Namhan River
and the accumulation of time as sedimentary layer and expressed the building metaphorically as 'the black box emerged on the
surface of water of the sedimentary layer'.
The resting area of citizens and the cultural space in a daily life
In the main space contacted to the building lobby and the hall, the cafe is located so that people visiting for a rest can meet the
culture naturally. In addition, the landscape boundary is open to make the museum as an open resting area.
Attracting the view of Namhan River
The upper part of the cafe contacted to the water space is lifted by the cantilever which creates a long gap horizontally through
which a nice view of Namhan River and Yeoju city is seen at a glance and people can remind of the existence of Yeoju and its
history.
Dynamic space in the box
There is a main hall contacted to the cafe and connected to three floors. The viewing movement line was planned dimensionally so
that the movement of people can be felt dynamically in the static cubic space.
Water and Sky, and the Reflection of Glass
We planned the black glasses to reflect the sky and show the today and tomorrow of Yeoju and the triangle of the south-west
corner lights up the upstream of Namhan River and reflect the past time of Yeoju. Written by HANUL Arhictects & Engineers Inc.

The site located in Yooseong-gu, Daejeon is the hill with the low-built neighboring park on the west. To the south,
the apartment is located and the 4-storied residential building in the surrounding area. Beside the park where
people can take the rest in the center of the city, this church will be built. We are drawing a place sharing with local
residents, a place sharing the park and charge and a place where church and culture coexist. “What shall we fill this
building with?” we ask and answer.

To meet the concept of urban planning, we considered the connection with the park and natural lighting, noise,
shield and efficient movement line. The access yard toward the road was formed to induce the main entrance and
secure the accessibility. The parking entrance and exit was planned separately and the pedestrian movement line
and vehicle movement line are separated.

On the lower part of the building, the facilities used frequently by people are located and the dynamic space and
static space are separated. The 3D access is available by placing the difference of level with parking access space.
We considered the view of park from the chapel and restaurant and designed the rich space with proper elevation
plan. Written by Abel General Architect(co.)

What shall we put on this land?
The land located toward south is looking at Mt.Cheongryong. When I met the family of owner, I
felt cordial and peaceful atmosphere all the times. On the journey to the space for another life,
how do I contain this feeling in this space? I am drawing a comfortable resting space while
looking at Mt.Cheongryong.

There are a road to three directions : South, North and West. It seems to view far to the north of
Nambu Circular Road. And the elevator must be reflected on this narrow land. We have to find
the way that considers the view of north, lighting and view of south together and protects from
the cold air on the north in winter. Accordingly, we set the main lighting direction to the south and
planned the stairs and elevator on the north by applying the buffering space. To avoid the
interface of eyes from outside with the neighboring area on the north, the building was arranged
to the south as possible as we can and separated between buildings and the parking lot, on the
north.

The elevation plan considered the exterior building materials to apply the minimal and simple
beauty. We planned the differentiated elevation but thought of the harmony with the neighboring
buildings. The street corner of the road was not considered for the design of building along with
the architecture line but we planned the elevation with projected incline using that part as a
design point and on the plan drawing, we planned a kitchen to keep the uniformity of windows as
well as removed the top cabinet of kitchen furniture but acquired the rich windows. For the top
and bottom of kitchen, the black and white colors were used to realize the entire body of the
building by taking the calmness and stability of the color. On the top, the base panel having the
concrete texture was used and on the bottom, the basalt was used.

On the narrow land, 50% of building coverage rate pressed us. To overcome this burden, we had
to plan the core and corridor compactly. Even for the wall of stair room, we used the pattern coat
and minimized the common area. We separated the living facilities into two spaces around the
core to reduce the weight of rental fee. The house was planned with two rooms and 1.5 rooms to
be arranged toward the south. On the fifth floor, the owner is living and on the fourth floor, the
couple of owner's son is living. Using the point to install the windows on three sides, the space
connecting the bed rooms and living rooms and kitchen was open to give the feeling of unified
sometimes or separated sometimes by dividing the space with furniture.

We performed this project by a turnkey from design to construction. From the beginning, we
carried out a design and construction together with the owner. The construction made together
by supplementing and understanding each other gave us the high valued gift, satisfaction. We
really wanted to construct a building grown in the fertile land. Written by URITER ARCHITECT.CO.,KR

The house was designed for a couple. The husband is a college professor at art department. The
site is placed on a hillside with a sweeping view and a broad slope to the northwest, and faces a
mountain to the south. It poses a particular challenge that the orientation of the house and of the
main view cannot be the same. The couple wanted a place for various social activities and events,
in addition to residence, after the husband retires. To do so, they wanted a separate guest house
apart from the main house, an independent study-cum-atelier for the husband, as well as a
multi-purpose space that can accommodate about 20 people.

Considering the site conditions and the couple's needs, we decided to maximize a view to the
northwest and design a flexible space to accommodate various events, with a careful section
planning. Using the slope, we put south-facing living quarters on the upper level, separated into a
main house and a guest house. On the lower level, we designed a multi-purpose room that
connects the two buildings.

The most notable spatial feature is a stepped courtyard that spans the two levels, located
between the main house and the guest house. This serves as a spatial center of the house, and
is the most interesting place. The courtyard connects the upper and the lower levels, and can
flexibly accommodate various events. The courtyard is topped by a viewing deck that connects
the main house with the guest house, serving as a scenic point of the house with a panoramic
view.

As for finishing materials, dark gray bricks and zinc panels, light gray cement panels were used
to create a monochromatic exterior so that the house can naturally blend into the surrounding.
Inside the house, also monochromatic colors and natural tone of white birch were used to
emphasize the contrast with the surrounding view seen through windows. Architectural
elements of the exterior and interior of the house were linked, thereby expanding spatial scope of
the house as the exterior space is perceived as an extension of the interior, and vice versa.

We propose a symbolic building that makes a clear reference to the
history of Suncheon. Both simple and functional, the concept derives from
the circular city wall with four entrance gates that enclosed and protected
the Old City. The new building inverts this idea, to protect the natural
habitat from the ever expanding city. Designed as a circular form raised
on one side, it opens its interior space to welcome the city as an 'open
gate'. Unlike the original wall with its four restrictive access points, the
multiple openings and its lifted form provide permeable urban spaces that
link the interior to the external public spaces and the wider city context.

The external facade of white concrete with floor to ceiling glass provides
clear open views of the city. The inner glass facade with its strategically
positioned brise soleil, will frame and define the interior garden and
community space. Interior spaces are linked through gently ramping
surfaces under a complex curving roof above. The building's circular form
allows for a flexible arrangement of spaces of varying sizes, creating a
unique framework for the museum's art and the visitor centre.

The landscape design is based on two principal ideas, a global intention

applied over the entire site, with a garden at its centre that makes
reference to Suncheon. Inspiration for the overall landscape proposal is
the seminal work Several Circles by the Russian painter and art theorist
Wassily Kandinsky. The interior garden is conceived as a public,
egalitarian 'living room' for all, and features a conceptual urban map of
Suncheon, scaled and oriented to the site in accordance with Korean
geomancy.

The new Art platform will inspire residents through research,

preservation, exhibits and education. It will provide a welcoming and
accessible place for all, regardless of age or disability. Open Gate will be
an attractive and serene venue for individual retreats and community
gathering, a place to connect or disconnect, a place to learn, a place to
dream, a place to engage and be engaged, a place for art and all manner
of imagination. Within the city it will be a new symbol to represent the
unity of Suncheon citizens. Written by Civic Architects + The Cloud Collective

The Open Museum
Contemporary museums face a number of contradictory demands; the need to be grand in
scale while encouraging contemplation and intimacy, to be both iconic and flexible, to display
established art and support emerging artists, and to be both secure and open and inviting to
a diverse range of people. Globally, the urban fabric is becoming more closed and privatized -
both as experienced in planas public space disappears, as well as in elevationas glass
towers now cut across all typologies, from commercial to residential and institutional,
rendering the urban skyline homogenous and ironically opaque. In reaction to these
conditions, we propose a more open model for the contemporary museum.

Ode to the Balcony

In Mediterranean cities the balcony extended and transformed the modernist 'curtain wall'
into a thickened, inhabitable pocket, able to negotiate the relationship between inside and
outside. Balconies not only tempered the interior through shading but also allowed interior
lives to spill out to the outside, making repetitive apartment units more specific and bring life
to the vertical landscape of the city.
The Open Museum appropriates the balcony as a device to rethink the envelope of the
museum. Rather than repetitive extensions of the interiors, our reinvented balconies become
a series of outdoor galleries of a multitude of scales and shapes, acting independently of the
museum inside, and creating a new gradient of publicly accessible spaces.
On the inside are perfectly proportioned, flexible gallery spaces. On the outside is a vertical
sequence of 94 'project rooms that will allow for new kinds of art to be commissioned,
displayed, disseminated and experienced.
As the museum expands, these outdoor galleries can evolve: they can be shaded to
accommodate more sensitive works, or even glass-in to provide additional indoor gallery
space over time, allowing the museum to expand organically. This gradient of rooms - from
the specificity of the outdoor rooms to the neutrality of interior galleries - offers a new kind of
flixibility, one that does not abide to the recent 'bloatedness' of museums but rather registers
the broad historical range of exhibition spaces - from the flexible galleries of the Centre
George Pompidou to the exquisite sequence of rooms as experience in the Hermitage.

“Total Architecture”

I have a delightful opportunity to collect and sort out my previous work that I have done in the past as I got this honor gold prize of Gyeunggido
Arcitecture and cultural Award. The reason I sort out my previous works with focusing the houses Design is that I intend to redirect and pursue
my architectural works to be Total Design for Community Architecture. (It aims to integrated Design to animate the small or medium
communities)
Houses cherish the families that are most fundamental communities in our society. If not only the house that cherishes families is well
designed but also the community like family is actively structured, they will play a great role to build up healthy society. I pursue my architecture
to be “Total Architecture” as the fundamental vision with the good architectural design as well as construction manifest the intention of
Architect’s Design and plan to develop the land in the right way. Introduced houses and previous works put our pursuit in them.

Attention to Light Gallery House Written by Kim Hongki
Peeping the house containing somebody's lengthy efforts and time makes my heart beating because I can peep the philosophy of
architect and at the same time the response of owner living in the house. When I hold a doorpull made by whole iron, I felt heavy. Like
shaking hands with unfamiliar person, the first communication with Light Gallery House was tactile. When I open the door, the stairs
are unfolded just in front of me. Generally there is a yard or transfer space but here we encounter the indoor space directly like
apartment space. Walking up along the stairs, we can meet the Light Gallery, a light tunnel of U-Glass. The unknown calmness,
tranquility and floating sense in zero gravity makes this house very special.
While looking around the house from sky garden on roof top to the first floor, escorted by architect and the owner, my thinking reaches
that this house is same as the image in the picture. I need some more time to know the value of this Light Gallery House completely.
While walking around room to room and floor to floor, everyone may feel the difference of space structure. Like the picture of Echer,
the space unfolded with circulation structure reflects the internal demand of life entirely.
Architect Cheon Geun-woo has been aiming at 'the interpretation of earth' and 'relation-flow'. This means the organic relation between
inside and outside, room and room, material and material, topography and artificial structure. In the physical relation network, the flow
of light, wind and sound is added. The light is swimming in this space all the day like a light-colored picture. In the small courtyard,
sometimes birds visit to sing and when it rains, the rhythm of falling rain creates the poetic response..
To make top quality work, architect participates in design to construction directly. His desire is shown as the experiment of property. He
committed the experiment of materials and details sincerely. Apart from the stereotyped materials and routine method, he pursued his
own details made by molding or processing. I can infer the reason that it may come out of the unique atmosphere of the university he
was trained and the spirit of workshop.
In the middle of 1980's when Cheon Geun-Woo learned the architecture in the university, the search for Korean identity has been
fiercely conducted in the huge discourse of Post-modernism. Many of students who have the same issues opened a seminar in the
atelier or studio and indulged in the competition and cultivated the spirit of architect. To widen the range of architecture, Cheon Geun-
woo left to USA and Son Jin to Italy. In the middle of 1990's when they returned, the new stream has been forming in several divisions
apart from big stream of Kim Soo-Geun and Kim Jung-up. The new architecture movement and group have been born and the
architectural journalism has been on the peak. In 1998, Architectural journal "C3" made a special edition for Architect Cheon Geun-
woo. It was 3 years since opened a design office after returning to Korea with a MA degree of Graduate School of Pennsylvania
University. In the preface, Cheon Geun-woo expressed his architectural philosophy by quoting the speech of Andrey Tarkovski and
Victor Hugo. It was abstract but showed his mind indirectly that there is human in the center of his architecture.
The architecture of Cheon Geunwoo encounters the inflection point when the new year of 2018 beings. It is called 'Cheong Movement'.
In the new building he moved recently, the 'Ison architects' of Son Jean is located and at the corner of the office, there is a working
space for Kim Ho-hyun (the representative of The Erets Group). This is the reason that the house works of three architects are posted
on the special edition of journal. I expect that they will make a mutual relationship and open a new horizon.
On the roof top garden of Light Gallery House, there is a very small fountain made with marble. Cheon Geun-woo borrowed the design
of this fountain from 'Brion Family Cemetery (199) of Carlo Skarpa. The 'Brion Family Cemetery' located in Treviso, Italy had a water
bowl and waterway at external space using the excellent details. The calm water flowing indicates the long journey of life. The small
fountain on the roof top is also the sign of wish that this house will last long as a house containing a journey of life like water flows. I
close my post-script for Light Gallery House while memorizing his speech on the preface of special edition of architect journal 20 years
ago.
"If there is something that I learned surely through architect, it will be the trace of humans and the message contained in the building."

1. 'Light Gallery House' was awarded the gold prize of 2017 Gyeonggido Architectural Culture Award. Light Gallery House means 'the
house containing a light' and what does the name mean?
There is no case that a light is not involved in a house because a light is the most fundamental environmental element that secures the
visibility and energy in our life. But the naming of Light Gallery House 'The House containing a light', started from my wish that a light
could be the most important theme composing a house not just staying in the position of background.

2. So what made you set a light as the main theme in the house?
I think that 'A house is a background that contains the memories and traces of family'. It's a family that should be contained in the
house. The house without family is lonely and empty. But there is another one that should be contained in the house which connects
the family and communicate each other. It's a light. 'A light' guides and connects the family actively and makes them meet each other.
Like an empty house, the dark house is lonely and gloomy. The house that communicates with people through the light of nature,
temperature, wind and sound is filled with vitality. The light, wind and sound allow the exposure of space, form and surface and meet
each other and leave the trace.
I intended to build a house like a bowl that contains a vital life and the memories through the meeting of light and people. With this
conceptual intension, I had another physical background. Here Pangyo New Town Housing Complex is the newly emerging residential
development complex targeting the middle-class located between Seoul and Bundang. They have to get along with neighbors within
the visible area difficult to keep the privacy. Now Pangyo Housing Complex becomes to give up the view right to keep the mutual privacy
between houses through the prior learning of the earlier built houses. So they introduced the courtyard actively in order to keep the
privacy by installing the minimum opening toward the outside and secure the illumination intensity inside and the insufficient external
space in the house. I thought that instead of giving up a view right, a light itself can be an active watching. In other words, we can
approach the light we encounter everyday in our daily life in a new and fundamental method.

3. The main theme of Light Gallery House seems to be expressed through 'Light Gallery' called U-Glass and 'Light Mass'. You intended
to make the space and sculpture to handle the light concretely. Is there any reason to do so and how did you resolve it?
A daily life is the repeated appearance without change. The thing that makes us to watch the nature and realize it, is not repetition but a
change. The phenomena look similar but never same. Watching we are changing in the nature is watching that we are in the center of
that change by ourselves. U-Glass is the material composing the semi-transparent glass wall, which has a U-shaped section and a
length to cover the height of one floor. Light Gallery is a bridge space that connects a stair case surrounded by U-Glass only and the
living room on the upstairs. The density of light is gradually changed all the day.
Through this house, we can feel the existence of light and the difference of light in a quiet daily life with new discovery. Light Mass is the
sculpture seen symbolically from U-Glass outside. At day time, it is a Mass that attracts the light into the inside of the house but when
night approaches, it becomes a Mass that emits the light actively by L.E.D. lamp embedded in the bottom of U-Glass. Light Mass can be
a sculpture that discloses its existence by using the light and at the same time a vitality of that region that lights up the entire village.

4. What is your intention to show through three courtyards 'Light Well' and when you planned a courtyard, what did you consider
specially?
The configuration line of the house is using the original land boundary as it is. So on the one hand, it shows the identity as the tissue
composing the current city. And on the other hand, the walls toward outside have only minimum opening and are composed of solid
wall or semi-transparent U-Glass to secure the privacy at maximum. We tried to have a courtyard actively using the method to dig the
inside of outer line of land to get a proper lighting and ventilation. And all rooms are attached each courtyard and the characteristics of
room and the environment of courtyard are supplementary each other.

5. It can be seen that various attempts have been made in using materials. U-Glass, stainless steel bars on the exposed concrete, and
handmade tiles, etc. I am curious about attempts that would be possible when proceeding directly with construction.
There were two things to be done in U-Glass construction. The structural frame for wrapping the stairs with U-Glass was composed of
100x100 pipes. The problem was that the floor height of the last landing that rises to the roof is 1.5 times the height of the existing one,
but U-Glass of that length is not supplied. Therefore, the pipe structure which was suspended by cantilever was solved by reinforcing it
with X-bracing metal structure. The other one is L.E.D, which is installed in a horizontal metal stripe. Usually indirect lighting is
installed, but in our case it contains a staircase and there was no space to place reflective lighting. Therefore L.E.D. lighting with
waterproof and moisture-proof function was placed in a 20 mm space between the U-Glass and the frame.
The exterior wall facing the neighborhood is made of exposed concrete for privacy. A stainless steel bar was installed on the beautiful
but heavy and thick surface of the exposed concrete to give a shimmering and responsive vibe when the light shines.
There are golden and blue handmade tiles on one concrete wall of the courtyard. To put a vitality on the wall which could be seen as
cold when viewed from the inside. The tile was specifically commissioned by Jung Ki-hoon, and there have been several attempts to
sample Venice tiles. In addition, when concrete is laid, the part to be tile is prepared in advance, so that the tile can be installed neatly.

116
6. In the courtyard, there are some parts half-open made by flat bar frame which shows 'the duplicity of open and close'. What intention
they have?
The courtyard is completely open toward the sky but on the wall, it opens and closes. Physically F.B. steel frame can slide (hanging) or
swing variably and plays the role of door to open and close which enables to enter or exit to keep the security.
This variability and the duplicity of open and close are created by vertical louver composed of flat bar. In other words, when flat bar is
arranged vertically, the inside is not seen from main road by section or the main passage of neighbors and available to secure the
lighting but when looking outside from indoor, the view is open on one side. In conclusion, from the inside of the building, we secured
the openness and lighting and from outside, it is not possible to see the inside to keep the safety.

7. You have been performing various projects such as 'Cafe en Rose', 'Circle Stair House', 'Samilga' and there are many of projects that
emphasize the concept. How did you set these concepts and realize them?
When we start the work giving the name of the building, the personality of the building can be organized more clearly and the unique
personality can be emerged. Doing in this manner has a merit that we can make the personality of the house in the design step and
even in the case we continue to design to the construction, we can also make the personality of the building with the consistent theme
in several steps we encounter in the field and create the special building different from others.
In my case, most of concept source are focusing on how I can make nature or environment and humans meet each other through the
medium of building.
Every project has its own story. For example, 'SAM IL GA' is the project that daughters extended the existing house they lived in order to
live again with their father together. 'SAM IL GA' was named meaning 'the house the three homes of three daughters are living in one
house with their parents'

8. It's been a half of a year since 'Yecheon architects' and 'Ison architects' combined as the name of 'Ison Yecheon architects, ltd'. And
Kim Ho-hyun of 'The Erets Architectural Group' joined you also. Is there any reason to join? And what is your vision after then?
Son Jean, the director of Ison architects was a friend of architectural workshop since my campus life at Hongik University. Recently I
proposed him to work together. The tendency of work and the pursuing direction is different but we have worked covering the area of
construction for the completion of architecture not just staying in architectural design. I thought that on the common point that pursues
toward the completion of architecture, if we share the experiences of two directors each other, more effective work could be realized.
The representative Kim Ho-hyun was my student when I was working for Hongik University as adjunct professor. Since then, he has
worked in my office for about 10 years and separated independently 5 years ago and as a head of 'The Erets Architectural Group',
operated architectural office and construction company and walking in the same way as ours. He agreed also to unify our bigger
capacities to go on the way of Total Architecture.

9. I think that the office operation method and project process method is different each other. What do you plan to solve it?
The working method is allowed as they have done. But if necessary, we can advise each other and work together for the project and
furthermore, we are pursuing °∞Total Design Architecture°± (Planning development + Architectural design + Construction + Follow-up
and operation) that we can plan the project more powerfully and make our business by ourselves instead of outsourcing service.

10. If you have the desired work to do in your mind or the vision for the future, please tell us?
Whatever we work, the most important thing is people of the team. Especially, the vision and judgment of the leader group who are
playing the leading role is important.
Architects are professionals who make the environment good to live and good to work. They dream the same dream in the continuous
line from small house to public building and more the balanced development of region. But in the reality, this continuity is disconnected.
Urban design, regional development, complex development, large-sized architectural project, small-sized architectural project, interior
design, furniture design, display coordinator, building management etc... in these flow, we need the consistent architectural business
behavior that contains the continuity of total concept that handles and integrates the total process by one concept, in our society. Total
Design for Community Architecture (Integrated architectural design that activates the community) is pursuing the architecture and
environment that makes the community where people meet, communicate, share, memorize and embrace each other not making
people work drily through building.
While pursuing 'Total Design for Community Architecture', the project that I want to do first is making a village. Now I have a plan to
secure a project site at Namhae, a place with nice view and available to get a life of seaside and take a rest, and build a community
complex that enables to get a comfort apart from the living pattern of the city. With my team, I would like to pursue this vision so that
this Total Design for Community Architecture can be a valuable work at home and abroad.

A house is the background that contains the trace of family.
What must be included in a house is family member. What must be contained in a house
that connects family and communicate each other is a light. The house that interrupts with
people through natural light and wind and sound gives the vitality to the house. The space,
type and surface are exposed by light and wind and sound which meet each other and
leave the trace. Through meeting of nature and humans, the vitality is transferred to the
house and the house becomes a bowl that puts a life and memory in.

Accepting the type of site actively

The site is located in the new town of Pangyo which is a residential area in the suburb of
Seoul and gives an identity 'our house that contains dream and memory of my family' on
the site. To identify it as 'our house only for us' by accepting the flow of urban organization of
West Pangyo, we kept the configuration/outline of site and used it as the line of outer wall of
building.

Giving a vitality to the house through courtyard

Keeping the outline of site, we arranged several courtyards according to the layout of space
to prevent the eyes from outside and put the flow of light and wind that gives vitality to the

122
house. There are three courtyards ‘courtyard inside garden’ which is the core space of
house; ‘white gravel yard’ that has a room of grandmother; ’light-well courtyard’ that has a
room of daughter. These courtyards have different role and atmosphere, respectively and 1. Rooftop Garden
responsible for family member. 2. Deck

Spatial configuration and flow of movement line

The basic role of house is being together with family, flow and communication. The
windows toward outside are limited but if you look at the surrounding according to the
inner movement line, you can find various and gradually changing views newly.

A wish of architect
"If I stay in the house, new views appear as I move and so I feel my house seems to be new
every week" said the client. I am grateful for his enjoyment of his house even if I feel

unsatisfied and unfamiliar still. My wish is that the house should be a place giving a
pleasure of new discovery as well as the place of memory containing beautiful memories

The professors of music professors intended to rebuild the space after the breakup, to preserve
the past memories of the place, and to be a residential space where new memories can be held.
It is planned that foreigners can be leased in consideration of the location characteristics close to
the university. Furthermore, the tenants of this building reside here, allowing them to form a
small community centering around the courtyard. After analyzing the existing building and
surrounding environment, it is a gallery leasing space where the first floor space used as a
warehouse can be directly entered from the ground level. The first floor is used by the client and
the second floor is extended to the attic space We have newly envisaged this as a foreign
residence space. In order to maximize the utilization of existing space as well as lease space

The decision was made for wooden structure of the house. The fast completion of the structure
was one reason and the ideal solution as an acoustic resolution was another. In the masterplan
suggested, on angles of each lot we put a cube mass which meets a slowly inclined pitched roof
on two sides cut obliquely on the plan so that when the cluster will be completed would create a
well defined courtyard at the center.
The cube contains lesson rooms on ground floor and three bed rooms on the second floor, plus
a small terrace to make a compact private atmosphere. In the meantime, under the pitched
roof, a large multi-use space is connected to the living room by stairs.
The wooden structure is not evident from outside. Ironically we used the cement bricks for the
lower part of the pitched roof space and the drivit for the cube. Being conscious of the fact that
the red bricks which was very popular materials in the sixties and seventies are dominant in the
whole village, the house had strong red brick coloured-drivit on it . A subtle interplay in materials
and colours with circumstances we wanted. On the other hand, in the interior space of the
house, wooden materials are overwhelming. A 1.8m wide wooden louver was laid along the
whole length facing the garden in 2.2m height in the way that it roles as a spatial and visual
device to put in relationships between the inner and outer spaces. The obliquely cut away part on
the plan for the future courtyard is substituted with a large wooden deck to continue into the
inner space alluding the wooden finishings of interior spaces.
The cube meets the pitched roof on two sides. Alongside the whole length, we put the narrow
top-lights to make the two different volume evidential and to give the natural lights to the deep
inside. The white wall of the cube is supposed to be strongly washed by sun lights at a certain
moment of the day.
Korean upper-middle class village usually has high and strong walls along the streets and
neighbors for their privacy. To give a visual breath to neighbors keeping privacy at the same time,
a specific solution should be needed for the wall. We proposed a thin metal louver arrayed
obliquely in 100mm distance with different heights according to the situations. A dense rhythm to
the street was another gain. Written by ISON Architects_Son Jean

The erets_Kim Hohyun

Kim Ho-hyun was born in 1975 in Seoul. Graduating from Hongik University with a B.S. in Architecture, he received the President's Award
from the Alumni Association at the degree exhibition 2011. After graduation, he worked under architect Cheon Keunwoo at Ye-cheon
Architects for 10 years and established visionary architects group "The Erets" in 2012. Those years at Ye-cheon Architects gave him a
valuable opportunity to think hard about the architecture and learn about the responsibilities of an architect. Visiting overseas disaster
areas, he found his mission and role as an architect, and wishes that such mission and responsibilities would develop into the restoration of
trust in the current architectural culture.

We hope the land ("erets" is a Hebrew word for land) to be used in a sound, beautiful way according to the purpose of the Creator, and
want to be a good steward for this. The Erets is a "Vi.a" (Visionary Architects Group) which dreams to bring about "the innovation of
architectural culture" by restoring trust between the client and the architects and constructors.
Architecture is a team work. It deals with extensive subjects and entails tough decision making. Sometimes you have to leave many things
behind and can't afford to do all things right. However, we cherish our first mind and the process. We hope to further develop our expertise
as architects and share the joy of the architectural process with those who are with us.

When you encounter a fine view climbing a mountain, you can often stand on flat rocks to
see the view better. When you find a place like this, you walk fast to, and rest there for a
while. I hope this space will be such flat rocks to a family. The family recognizes a view
ranging from Mt. Halla to Mt. Sanbang at a glance, coming into a structure through piloti
space on the first floor.
In this entry process, they can appreciate a view through a slit of the sky and land. Standing
on a large rock (living room) on the 2nd floor through a stair hall on the 1st floor, they can
enjoy space expressing nature with outside landscape in a frame, passing through a big
window connected to deck. As the name of project 'spread housing', the architectural form of
it stretches towards nature, and all the indoor space stretches with nature.
The concept image of 'a big rock to relax in' was formed with design factors through the
entire project. One of the signature of it is a cloud on the island sink in the kitchen. A roof
shape simplified in the process of architectural screening is composed inside, and a free
linear shape was expressed in a three-dimensional way. Further, in facade composition, an
atypical linear shape wrapping up roof materials was used to offer a sense of consistency on
the edge of 'a big rock to relax in'. Written by Kim Hohyun

The 'Fragrant hill house' consists of one and two floors of detached houses on the ground
floor with a basement level 1 living room and an underground storage room, and utilized the
5m slope that flows from north to south as a whole.
The basement floor of the first basement located at the bottom of the slope was exposed to
the ground, and the basement floor of the first floor was exposed. A single-family house was
placed on the middle of the slope to use the rooftop gardens in the basement as a yard, and
a flower bed was used to protect the privacy of the single-family house. On the rooftop,
there is a loft connected to the indoor space, creating a space for a rooftop party. Each level
has an entrance and a parking space for independence. Written by Kim Hohyun

BYULDAMSTAY with sea and stars

BYULDAMSTAY is located in the middle mountain area between Mt.Halla and the seashore.
Frequently covered with thick fog, the village has an interrupted view of sky and widely
unfolded Jeju sea. On the land embraced by the sky and sea, the owner wanted every
building to look as an object.

As if the host unit and guest unit to be used as a guest house are quite different program,
different external materials were used to create the respective characteristics at the
elevation. The host unit covered with the zinc helmet represented the space only for the
owner. The guest unit inserted in front and rear side with woods represented the whole
building with warm and familiar feeling. Both units have the yard and big windows at
maximum toward Mt.Halla to create wider and more comfortable sense of space. In addition,
users can feel the natural environment in the neighboring more closely through that window.
