PRESSURE FELT BY OLD AND TRANSFEREE STUDENTS OF RSHS – IX

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

An article titled, “Pressure” states that pressure is defined as the psychological stress

associated with expectations to perform well in a situation. Pressure can be real or perceived and

other individuals or entire groups can create pressure in someone. Some pressure and stress can

actually be good for performance – research shows that an optimal amount of stress can make you

perform better. But too much pressure and stress can lead to worsening performance and even

freezing and choking up.

Regional Science High School – IX Senior High School is one of the most prestigious Senior High

Schools in Zamboanga City. Hence, students of this institution are prone and exposed to pressure.

In contrast to this, the transferee students have the different amount of pressure than the old

students because it is the first time that they would encounter and discover new things intheir new

environment. This study will be conducted to determine the amount of pressure felt between the

old and transferee Senior High School students of Regional Science High School – IX.

Statement of the Problem

Pressures and stress are already common especially to the students of Regional Science

High School – IX Senior High School. They are more likely to be exposed in such pressure, while

the students who came from other schools, the amount of pressure they felt may differ from the

old students of Regional Science High School– IX. Thus, this study aimed to determine the

pressure felt between the old and transferee students of Regional Science High School – IX Senior

High School.

Specifically, this study aimed to answer the following questions:

1. How would old students describe their feeling of being pressured in Senior

High School?

2. How would transferee students describe their feeling of being pressured in

Senior High School?

3. What are the similarities and differences of pressure felt by the old and

transferee students of Regional Science High School – IX Senior High School?

4. What are the advice that old students can give to transferees in order to cope

with pressure?

Significance of the Study

Determining pressure felt between the old and transferee students of Regional Science

High School – IX Senior High School can help the old students to have an idea on how the

transferee students deal with pressure, as well as it can also give information to the transferee

students on how the old students cope with pressure in studying at Regional Science High School

– IX Senior High School. The results highlighted the pressures felt by the Regional Science High

School – IX Senior High School students in relation to the effect of stress that contribute to the

amount of pressure. By doing this research on how the old and transferee students deal with

pressure, it may result for the improvements and understanding of each side. Also, this study can

help the teachers on how they should deal with the transferee students in accordance to their new

environment. Furthermore, this study could furnish new information which can be used for

deliberation of new knowledge.

Scope and Limitations

This study focuses only in determining the pressure felt by the old and transferee students

of Regional Science High School – IX Senior High School grade 11 students. There are ten (10)

male and female old student respondents and ten (10) male and female transferee student

respondents with a total of twenty (20) respondents. In addition, the survey was conducted by the

researcher through social media. The duration of the study covers a period of one month including

the interviews to the respondents and interpretation of data.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Review of Related Literature

Most of the transferee students are in the process of adjustment between academic

adjustment, social-cultural factor, personal-emotional factor, environmental factor, and

intercultural communication apprehension. Since they are in the process of adjustment and

adaptations, they feel more pressured on how they can cope up with their new settings.

The old students are already used in their setting and knows already the ins and outs of the

institutions, there is no need for adjustments and adaptations. Old students are more likely to feel

less pressure.

The pressure between the old students and transferee students depends on the factors that

they have. Nowadays, parents pressured their children through high expectations for them to excel

and perform well in school. With the involvements of their parents to their studies, they tend to

feel pressured and stress out.

Regional Science High School – IX as one of the most prestigious Senior High School in

Zamboanga City, students are exposed to this kind of situation wherein they will feel too much

stress and pressure due to school works and academic performances.

Review of Related Studies

Adjustment is a complex and multi-faceted concept. It refers to the dynamic processes that

can ultimately lead to achievement of an appropriate fit between the person and the environment

(Ramsay, Jones & Barker 2007). For the transfer students, adjustments is already usual and typical.

It is a period of transitions wherein they practice patterns and norms associated with experiences

and knowledge.

According to Leonard, “We are concerned that students in this selective, high pressure high

schools can get burned out even before they reach college”. Hence, students who are studying in

a high pressure high schools just like the Regional Science High School – IX may experience

getting burned out because of too much pressure due to load of requirements and performances

before even reaching college.

According to Rosemond (2012), there is a thin line between being involved and being over

involved. He states that after a point as parental involvement increases student achievement

decreases (as cited in Nauert, 2013). Basically, parent’s involvements in their child's studies and

high expectations towards them leads to the students pressure and anxiety that results to students

low achievements in school.

Based on a 2015 survey by the American Federation of Teachers regarding the levels of

stress and pressure, seventy-three percent (73%) of respondents said they often feel stressed at

5
PRESSURE FELT BY OLD AND TRANSFEREE STUDENTS OF RSHS – IX

work. It is concluded that several people are prone to stress and pressure when they are doing their

work. They do not feel enthusiastic in their work. Thus, the reason may be they were just forced

and constrained to do so.

However, there are some articles claiming that there are some perks of being a transferee

student. It is stated that transfer students feels less pressure than that of the old students because

schools often spend the first semester for the transfer students in easing them into a new

environment. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the amount of pressure felt between the old

and transferee students of Regional Science High School – IX Senior High School.

performance.” And there are also 6 respondents from old students and one of them stated that,

“Academic pressure is the factor that pressures me most because of high expectations from other

people.” The second common factors that pressures the students most are workloads with a total

of 5 respondents. There are 2 respondents from transferee students and says, “Workloads is the

common factors that pressures me most due to a lot of requirements and things to do to meet the

given deadlines.” And 3 respondents from old students and says just the same as the above

statements. (Statement from the transferee students). And lastly, the parental pressure which has 2

respondents and says, “Parental pressure is the most common factor that pressures me because

my parents wanted me to perform very well in class and they wanted me to get higher grades in

every quarter.”

This data shows the ratings of students about the pressure they felt in this institution as 1

as the lowest and 5 as the highest. There are 8 respondents who gives 5 in the ratings which means

they felt very pressured in this institution. Some transferee students says that, “I gave 5 because I

am much pressured in this institution due to a lot of requirements, changing of schedules, and few

people who I can approach to help me.” And also some old students says that, “I gave 5 because

the pressure I felt before was multiplied and it’s kind of hard for me.” There are also 8 respondents

who gave a rating of 3 and they stated that, “I gave 3 because I know already how to deal with

pressure even though there are a lot of things that I need to do.” “I gave 3 because I am already

used to feel pressured in this institution and the best thing I can do for myself is to deal and handle

pressure to become a better person”. And lastly, there are 4 respondents who gave a rating of 4

and they stated that, “I gave 4 because I am pressured due to requirements but I do something to

deal with it by doing my work ahead of time.”

CONCLUSIONS

Based on the findings, a theory on the pressure felt by old and transferee students of Regional

Science High School – IX Senior High School was drawn:

Due to different sources and factors of pressures the old and transferee students have, it is

safe to say that the old and transferee students have different amounts of pressure felt depending

on the situations. Sources of pressures from where the students get their pressures has a huge

impact on the pressures they felt as well as the factors that pressures them which pushes them to

go beyond their capacity and stressing themselves out. Hence, students who have the same sources

of pressure and has the same factors that pressures them experience the same amount of pressure.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The following recommendations are offered based on the findings and conclusions of the study:

The amount of time for observation should be extended in order to get a more accurate

picture of the situations in each school.

Do a more concise and comprehensive interviews and survey questions to improve the data

triangulation.

Add more numbers of respondents to have an accurate data for the study.

Add more specific questions to collect a more accurate and precise data for the

improvements of the study.
