This study uses the Determination Theory as a framework and test whether Perceived
competence, autonomy and relatedness mediated the relationships between perceived
coaching behaviors and athletes. Coaching behaviors can affect the motivation of an athlete ot
do something. Autocratic and Democratic behaviors by coaches were found to have significant
influences on the athletes.

This thesis studies the correlation between coaching behaviors and the affect that it has on the
college and professional softball players that were interviewed. The descriptive statistics of the
study showed that the softball players prefefered Training and instruction, Democratic behavior
and positive feedback.
