Read the short poem below. Pick out words/ phrases from the poem that
exemplify onomatopoeia, alliteration, assonance, and consonance. A table is provided
for you to follow.
I. Water plops into pond II. Whoosh, passing breeze
Splish- splash downhill Flags flutter and flap
Warbling magpies in tree Frog croaks, bird whistles
Trilling, melodic thrill Babbling bubbles from tap.

sound devices:

1. Onomatopoeia. This is a
sound device which refers to the
use of words whose sounds
suggest their meanings.
2. Alliteration. This is the
repetition of the same initial
consonant sounds of at least
two words in a line of poetry.
3. Assonance. This is the
repetition of vowel sounds at
the beginning, middle or end of
at least two words in a line of
poetry.
4. Consonance. This is the
repetition of consonant sounds
at the middle or end of at least
two words in a line of poetry.
