1:00 – 2:00 PM Quarter: FOURTH QUARTER

TEACHING DEMONSTRATION
SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN in STATISTICS & PROBABILITY

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the senior high school students will be able to:
a. Understand the concept of Type I and Type II errors;
b. Connect error to the process of hypothesis testing; and
c. Apply the concept of Type I and Type II errors to real-life situations.

A. CONTENT STANDARDS: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of tests of

hypotheses on the population mean and population proportion.
B. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: The learner is able to perform appropriate tests of hypotheses involving
the population mean and population proportion to make inferences in
real-life problems in different disciplines.
C. LEARNING COMPETENCY The learner calculates the probabilities of committing a Type I and
Type II error. (M11/12SP-IVa-2)

II. CONTENT
Test of Hypothesis

III. LEARNING RESOURCES

A. References
1. Textbook: Statistics and Probability 1st Ed., pp. 226 – 231, Belecina, R. et al
B. Other Learning Resources: PowerPoint Presentation, flashcards
C. Online Resources: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_l991xUAOU

IV. PROCEDURE
1. Start the class with a prayer.
2. Checking of attendance.
3. Presentation of objectives to establish the purpose of the lesson.
4. Motivation
 In-class Activity 1: What mistakes do people make?
Students are given situations and let them identify the errors in each statements.
a. Bryan thinks that he is a six-footer. His actual height is 156 cm.
b. On a moonlit night, a young man declares that there are two moons.
c. Mark says “I am virtuous!” In the next moment, he finds himself in jail.
d. Thousands of years ago, Ptolemy declared that the earth is flat.
e. On a beachfront, a signage reads, “No littering of plastics wrappers, empty bottles, and cans.”
A few yards away, environmentalists are picking up the rubbish left behind by picnic lovers.
5. Lesson Proper
 In-class Activity 2: Understanding the Decision Grid
Decisions about the 𝐻0
Reject Accept
𝐻0 is true. Type I error Correct Decision
Reality
𝐻0 is false. Correct Decision Type II error

 A downloaded video from the internet will be played to further discuss the topic.
6. Activity
 In-class Activity 3: Understanding Errors
Students will be grouped into five groups. They will be given 4 situations and they will determine
what type of error is committed in every situation.
1. Maria insists that she is 30 years old when, in fact, she is 32 years old. What error is
she committing? Type I error
2. Stephen says he is not bald. His hairline is just receding. Is he committing an error? If
so, what type of error? Type I error
3. A man plans to go hunting the Philippine monkey-eating eagle believing that it is a
proof of his mettle. What type of error is this? Type II error
4. Suppose it is Christmas Season and Janine thinks that it is the month of January.
What error is she committing? Type I error
7. Abstraction
o Let the students generalize in their own words the four possible outcomes in decision-making.
Synthesize the lesson by conducting a 3-2-1 Completion Check Activity.
3 things I learned today… 2 things I am confused of… 1 last question I have in mind…

V. EVALUATION
Determine the type of error of the following situations. Write your answers on your activity notebook.
1. Suppose it is Valentine’s Day and Jenna thinks that it is the month of March.
2. Arlene insists that she is in a legal age already, when in fact, she is only 15 years old.
3. A college dean claims that a bachelor’s degree could be earned in an average of five years.
4. Jerry loves smoking. He said that smoking is a proof of being cool.
5. Seth likes drinking beer because he believes that drinking beer is good to his health.
