HEALTH CONDITION, EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT(OCCUPATION) ,LIVELIHOOD
HEALTH CONDATION: 1) It is common knowledge that slums lack basic need
services like, safe drinking water, healthcare facilities, sanitation, housing problems, education etc. The lack of these basic services has both direct and indirect effect on the health of the urban slum dwellers. 2) in urban slums areas, the income for the poor increase marginally, which does not assure a better health condition due to the un-affordability of safe drinking water and air. The poor of the urban areas are driven to the outer space of urban, where living conditions are the most degraded and has a little economic value. 3)Health challenges in urban slums • Poor access to healthcare- although slums live in close to many healthcare centres, but they generally have little access to high quality healthcare. 4) Overcrowded, substandard housing facilitates the spread of infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis, hepatitis, dengue fever, pneumonia, cholera and malaria. Poor sanitation and lack of access to safe food and water contribute to high prevalence of diarrhoea within slums. The lack of structurally sound, climate- adapted and ventilated homes further puts the health of slum dwellers at risk of climate change-related extreme weather – including heat waves, cold or storms.
5) Moreover, slum areas are often left out of
major city networks for access to health-care services. Unplanned urban development exacerbates non-communicable disease risks related to outdoor and indoor air pollution.
EDUCATION: 1) Most slum children go to schools where teaching
standards are low and classrooms are seriously under-equipped. For most slum families, educating their children is the last thing on their minds. 2) Every child up to the age of 14 is entitled to free schooling. 3) sri sri nagar slum which we visited has and elementary school run by a trust.
