Gas suspension calcination
for fine ores
Gas suspension calcination is an
economical method for processing fine
materials such as limestone fines, lime
kiln dust, dolomite, alumina, trona,
clays, talc, and other mineral products.
Calcination takes place in a separately
fired, stationary calciner - no rotating
parts with simple PID control of the fuel.
With over 350 gas suspension calciners
in service since 1972, FLSmidth is the
world leader in gas suspension calcining
technology. We have designed units
from 1 ton per hour up to 800 tons per
hour.
How the FLSmidth minerals gas
suspension calciner works
Fine ore is introduced at the inlet gas duct
to the top most preheater cyclone. It is
subsequently preheated by hot,
countercurrent gas flow as it is
continuously collected and passed down
to the other cyclone stages in the
preheater before entering the gas
suspension calciner. The FLSmidth gas
suspension calciner is a vertical
cylindrical design in which fuel
combustion is in intimate contact with
the ore or via an external air heater.
Preheated combustion air is introduced
into the bottom of the calciner where it
is mixed with fuel and preheated feed
material. The turbulent swirling mixture
of combustion gases, fuel and material
produces a highly uniform temperature
profile throughout the furnace. A
cyclone at the outlet of the furnace
separates the gas and material. The
calcining temperature and atmosphere
can be closely controlled for even
burning, uniform product quality and
emission control.
The number of stages in the system is
custom designed based on material
being processed, process requirements,
thermal and system efficiency
optimization, and capacity. In addition
to preheat stages, cooling stages can
also be incorporated to maximize heat
recovery and limit downstream cooling
requirements.

All types of fuels are being used
successfully in commercial operations –
including natural gas, fuel oil, coals,
petroleum coke, other low heating value
gasses, and alternate fuels.

Proven NOx reduction from high
temperature “stage-less” combustion is
incorporated into the standard design.
It is an uncomplicated and effective
way to create low NOx emissions with
only one firing location. Should
additional NOx reduction be required, a
“staged” combustion calciner can be
provided. It includes a lower, fuel-rich
reduction zone followed by an upper
combustion zone to complete fuel
burnout and final calcining.
