A Semi Detailed Lesson Plan in English 8

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, students are expected to;
a. Identify a figure of speech.
b. Differentiate the given types of figure of speech.
c. Identify the figure of speech in a given example.
II. Subject Matter:
Figures Of Speech
III. Materials:
Chalkboard
Chalk
Cartolina

IV. Procedure:
A. Preparation:
Start with a prayer, greet the students and ask them to sit properly.
B. Motivation
Teacher will show different examples of figurative language and ask them if they
know how to use it in a sentence or if they know the meaning of the given
sentences.
C. Lesson Proper
Figurative language refers to the color we use to amplify our writing. It takes an
ordinary statement and dresses it up in an evocative frock. It gently alludes to
something without directly stating it. Figurative language is a way to engage your
readers, ushering them through your writing with a more creative tone.
1. Onomatopoeia - The use of words whose sounds suggest their meanings.
2. Personification - A figure of speech in which human qualities are atrributed to
an object, animal or idea.
3. Alliteration - The repetition of sounds/letters at the beginning of a word.
4. Metaphor- A comparison not using like or as.
5. Simile - A comparison using like or as.
6. Idiom - A figurative meaning of the connotation of the word. Different from
the literal meaning.
7. Hyperbole - An exaggerated statement
8. Allusion – a passing reference.
D. Activity
Students will be given a set of sentences in which they have to identify what type
of figurative language was used in the sentence.
E. Generalization
It is important that the students learn what are figurative language especially when
reading literature. It will help them understand the text easier.
F. Evaluation.
Identify what kind of figurative language is being mentioned in the sentence.
1. It uses human characteristics to describe non-human subjects.
2. It compares two or more subjects with the use of like or as.
3. It is the repetition of letters or sounds at the beginning of a word.
4. It is an exaggerated statement.
5. It is a figurative language that has a deeper meaning.
G. Assignment:
Read the poem Mother to Son by Langston Hughes.
