SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 9

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:
A. define the six trigonometric functions of acute angles using right triangles; and
B. determine the sides of a right triangle given the acute angle.

II. LESSON CONTENT

Topic: The Six Trigonometric Ratios.
Reference: Mathematics Grade 9 Learners Module by Meden L. Bryant et. al., pp. 430-433
Modules in Plane Trigonometry by Aida C, Castillo, MAT Math, et.al., pp. 35-39
Materials: Illustration Board
Values Integration: To be cooperative
III. LEARNING EXPERIENCE
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Checking of Attendance
3. Review
4. Motivation
 The teacher will give a game entitled “Find me”.
B. Presentation of the Lesson
 The teacher will ask the students what they observed on the game.
C. Development of the lesson
 The teacher show the six trigonometric ratios to the students.
Sine function-refers to the ratio of the opposite of that angle and its hypotenuse.
𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒
𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃 =
ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒
Cosine function-refers to the ratio of the adjacent side of that angle and its hypotenuse.
𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡
𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃 =
ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒
Tangent function-refers to the ratio of the opposite of that angle and its adjacent side.
𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒
𝑡𝑎𝑛𝜃 =
𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡
Cosecant function-refers to the ratio of the hypotenuse and the opposite side of that angle.
ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒
𝑐𝑠𝑐𝜃 =
𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒
Secant function-refers to the ratio of the hypotenuse and the adjacent side of that angle.
ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒
𝑠𝑒𝑐𝜃 =
𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡
Cotangent function-refers to the ratio of the adjacent side of that angle and its opposite
side.

𝑐𝑜𝑡𝜃 =
𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒

Note: SOH-CAH-TOA and CHO-SHA-CAO is a mnemonic/s used for remembering

the equations.
