Color Of The Cup The time it takes for ice to

liquify
Explanation of Variables

Control Variables Explain WHY you needed these

1. We will use the same cup material CVs and how they could have
2.
3.
We will use the same cup size
We will use the same ice cube size
messed up your data
4. All cups will have a different shade of
color from white through black to see ● We need CV’s because we need to
how fast the ice liquified in each.
5.All ice will be put in the cups at the same make our data as accurate as
time we start the stopwatch possible.
Hypothesis w/Reasoning
Darker colors absorbs all
If the the color of the cup gets
wavelengths of light and
darker, then therefore the ice
converts them to heat
will melt faster because Darker
colors absorb more heat.
Materials
● Black and White Paint
● Water
● Ice tray
● Stopwatch
● Camera to take pictures of
experient
● Computer to save all data
Procedure
1. Put water in ice container to freeze it.
2. Paint plastic cups different shades of white ending in black so 5 cups
3. Make sure to place cups in the same setting indoors.
4. Once the water is frozen start putting it in cups.
5. Time how long it takes the ice cube to liquify in the white cup x5
6. Time how long it takes the ice cube to liquify in the light grey x5
7. Time how long it takes the ice cube to liquify in the grey cup x5
8. Time how long it takes the ice cube to liquify in the dark grey cup x5
9. Time how long it takes the ice cube to liquify in the Black cup x5
10. Save all data and find out how long the ice melted in the different cups.

GRAPH w/ ALL data
AVERAGES data table and graph

Explain what your best fit line means.

Is it linear, exponential, etc…?
Does it follow your hypothesis?
Are there any values that don’t make
sense?
Analysis / Future Implications
1. In conclusion, what do your results mean?
● The more darker the color value of the cups were the faster the ice liquified and the lighter the cups were the slower.
2. How did your results compare to your hypothesis? Summarize the trend in your data.
● Our hypothesis was right , based off our data the darker the cups were the faster the ice liquified as you also saw on the chart.
3. Were there any outlying values in your data table or graph? Explain what they are.
● Their were no outlying values in our data, table or graph . Outlying values are values that seem off or away from your other
values.
4. What were some sources of error that could have contributed to the outlying values?
● I don't have any outliers.
5. What could you have changed in your variables to make your data more accurate?
● I could have fixed the setting while we did the experiment because as you saw in the video it got dark in the end and that
could have affected how fast it melted.
Analysis / Future Implications
1.1. What unit of physics does this apply to? (Cons of Energy, Thermodynamics, Waves?

● Thermodynamics

2. How does physics explain what happened in the experiment?

1. Dark colors like black absorb wavelengths of light that turns into heat, therefore that's what caused the ice to melt faster

3. What activity/lab/project/etc. Is related to your experiment? Compare your results to what you learned in class.

● This experiment may relate to the activity we did in class when Ms. Hannouche used two different base material (wood and
metal) and put 1 ice on each to see which ice melted faster. This activity was to see what material of the base made the ice last
longer but in our experiment it was the color.
Analysis / Future Implications

● Most Roofs have a Dark Color

● White Roofs would be better to reflect the

heat
● Depends where you live.
