Have you visited the Chinese garden at Rizal Park? Did you notice the pond with a bridge and rockwork
around it? Or the hundreds of carp and other fishes swimming around? Chinese gardens differ from those of
Americans and Europeans. According to the Chinese theory of landscape, there must be a harmony of
mountains and water. Thus, every garden must have some watery feature. Ponds are often planted with lotus
blossoms. These flower beds are in the water, made of lotus buds and leaves. To the Buddhists this plant
signifies liberation because its beautiful blossom rises heavenward. Large gardens are often chosen as
surroundings for cultural gatherings. Entertainment is provided in an open-air theatre. Plants are arranged in
rows of hundreds of pots. Very few flowers are planted in the ground. When you visit a Chinese garden in your
own town, try to see if it contains some of these features.
