Barco standard warranty

This warranty text supplements the Barco Terms and Conditions of Sale. In case of any contradiction or in-
consistency, the latter will prevail.
This warranty is granted to end users owning a Barco product.
Barco warrants that its products, when delivered in new condition, in original packaging, sold directly or
through a Barco authorized partner and used in normal conditions, is free from any defects in manufacturing,
materials and workmanship.
The warranty shall apply only to the extent that the products or any parts thereof have been installed and
serviced by skilled personnel certified by Barco.
The Warranty shall only apply if the mandatory preventive maintenance actions as described in the technical
documentation have been executed.
Warranty starts on the shipment date of products. If Barco is responsible for onsite acceptance (OSAT), war-
ranty starts upon sign off of OSAT or when product is taken into use, whatever starts first.
The warranty period comprises 24 months, and includes advance exchange of parts, next business day

economy shipment ; help desk business hours.
For software, repairs and purchased spare parts 3 months warranty apply, unless specified otherwise in the
purchase contract.
Any third party product or any part thereof which Barco merely resells with its products or services is subject
to the original manufacturer's warranty unless specified otherwise in the purchase contract.
The warranty does not apply to consumables (lamps, liquids, filters, reflectors, fans, pumps, batteries, etc…)
This warranty does not cover defects resulting from improper or unreasonable use or maintenance, failure to
follow operating instructions as mentioned in the technical documentation.
This warranty does not cover defects resulting from accident, unauthorized alteration or modification of the
original condition, or product being connected to or used in combination with other equipment, products or
systems (hardware and/or software) not compatible with the product or not respecting the installation re-
quirements as defined in the installation manual (such as high temperatures, humidity, dust, power surges…).
In no event shall Barco be liable for any defects, failures, loss of or damage caused by or resulting from wear
and tear, any external cause or event out of Barco’s control, use or operation of the product prior to ac-

Provides replacement of covered failed hardware parts. If technical phone support determines that there is a hardware part failure or an
obvious malfunction and provides a return material authorization (RMA) number, a replacement part will be dispatched on the next busi-

ceptance, any act or negligence of customer or any third party, or any phenomena inherent to the technolo-
gy used such as image retention, burn-in, vibrations, etc…
The warranty is void if serial numbers, warning labels or original seals are removed, changed or tampered
with.
During the warranty period, Barco will, at its sole discretion, repair (at Barco’s own or at a Barco certified ser-
vice center), or replace (using new or refurbished replacement parts) any defect within a reasonable period of
time and free of charge. The replaced product, parts and/or components shall become the property of Barco
and shall, at our request, be returned to Barco, otherwise invoiced.
Upon request of the customer Barco can send a service engineer onsite to repair the product. The travel time
and the travel and living expenses of the service engineer shall be payable by the customer in accordance
with Barco’s then applicable rates and procedures.
Barco will not pay shipping, insurance or transportation charges from you to us (Barco’s own or a Barco certi-
fied service center), or pay any import fees, duties and taxes.
To obtain the standard warranty service, return the product or part using the following procedures:
(i) Contact your Barco partner or Barco help desk in your country/region (visit Barco.com/ support) for
specific return and shipping information.
(ii) Label and ship the product to the address provided by Barco in your country/region. You shall pack
the products correctly in the original packaging so as to protect them from transport damage.
(iii) Place the necessary return material authorization number (RMA number) prominently on the out-
side of the box. Shipments not bearing a RMA number will be refused.
Please ensure that a backup of any customized data or configurations is made prior to returning the product
for repair/replacement. During the repair or replacement process products are reset to their factory configu-
rations and all customized data and configurations will be lost.
The remedies specified in this warranty document shall constitute the customer's sole and exclusive remedy
and Barco's sole and exclusive liability for Barco’s breach of the warranty hereunder.

This section explains the structure of the present manual as well as the typographic styles and icons used
therein.
1.1.1 Numbering
Chapters are referred to as chapters; parts of chapters are referred to as sections.
Chapters, sections, pages, and figures are numbered individually.
 Pages are numbered in Arabic numerals, except the title page (no number) and the table of contents,
which has Roman numerals.
 Chapters and sections are written in “dot syntax”, e.g. 4.2.3.

In this chapter:

The sources captured by the wall controller can be displayed anywhere on the display wall using our Display
®
Control Windows application program.
2.1 Display Control
Display Control GUI
Display Control allows you to organize the display of the wall controller and application windows locally on
the same machine, or from across a network on another machine.
You can use the application to interactively move, size, and position application windows and control ECU
windows by using the Windows Properties sheet. It also has a guide and grid function to aid the positioning of
windows.
Display Control permits to save specific wall layouts as .lay files, enabling them to be recalled when required.
Display Control also enables to save ECU windows as templates called presets. New instances of the saved
preset windows can be created in subsequent layouts. Presets can also be used with the split windows func-
tionality; this allows you to divide an ECU window into a set of sub-windows, each displaying a cropped por-
tion of the image in the original window.
There is an area of the application around the desktop where windows can be dragged, allowing them to be
manipulated without being displayed on the video wall.

2.1.1 Display Control server versus Display Control application

This system comes preinstalled.
The wall controller comes with two separate elements that work together, enabling you to control the display
wall:
1. Display Control server
2. Display Control application
2.1.2 Display Control server

The Display Control server is used to display ECU and application windows. The server element of the wall
controller needs to be installed on the machine from which you wish to create ECU and Application
Windows. It should be installed on the machine that contains the relevant hardware.
2.1.3 Display Control application

The Display Control application should be installed on the machine that has been identified to control the
display wall. This could be the machine driving the display wall or any machine on the network. The applica-
tion element of the wall controller is used to control the position, size, and properties of each window dis-
played on the server machine.

For a detailed description of the steps below, consult the wall controller user manual. The
hardware user manuals can be found either on the hard disk of your controller in the
\Repository\Tools folder, or on the USB stick included in your delivery, or downloaded from
the secured Barco website www.barco.com/mybarco.
Before switching on the video wall controller:

• Connect a keyboard and mouse,
• Connect a VGA control screen (recommended), or connect the projection modules of your display wall
to the graphics card(s) output.
• Plug in the network cable and connect the controller to the LAN.
You can connect the two LAN interfaces to one LAN only or to different LANs ("business LAN", "video
LAN"). Some controller lines support redundant network connections, i.e. teaming.

When switching on the display controller on your site for the first time, a Windows 7 Setup is started,
prompting you to enter information to adjust the display controller to your site.
• Ensure that both power supply units are switched on (P2), cf. hardware user manual, section ECU-200
rear or ECU-110 rear, resp.
• Switch on the controller by means of the power button (F3), cf. hardware user manual, section ECU-200
front or ECU-110 front, resp.
The BIOS and boot messages will appear on the control screen that is plugged into the VGA/DVI output
socket on the SBC (S6) or (S4), resp.; cf. hardware manual, section ECU-200 rear or ECU-110 rear, resp.
The hardware user manuals can be found on the hard disk of your controller
(\Repository\Documentation), or downloaded from the secured Barco website
www.barco.com/mybarco.
• Setup will prompt you to adjust the language options. The following language packs are preinstalled:
 simplified Chinese
 Dutch
 English
 French
 German
 Italian
 Japanese
 Portuguese (Brazil)
 Spanish
• Next, specify the country and region, the time and currency, and the keyboard layout.
• Subsequently, personalize your software by entering the user name and the computer name, and setting
your password.
Hostname limitations:
Hostname labels may contain only the ASCII letters 'a' through 'z' (case-insensitive), the
digits '0' through '9', and the hyphen (-).
Hostname labels cannot begin or end with a hyphen.
No other symbols, punctuation characters, underscores, or blank spaces are permitted.
Avoid using only numerical characters or names consisting entirely of hexadecimal digits
('0' through '9' plus the letters 'A' through 'F').
Do not use names longer than 15 characters.
Do not start your computer name with a numerical character.
• Next, enter the product key.

The Microsoft® Windows® product key is labeled on the inside of the controller's front
cover.
• Read and accept the license agreement.

Once the configuration of Windows has been completed, you will have to set up the display (cf. section
Setting up the display).

If necessary, proceed to set up the display by means of the Windows Control Panel.
4.1 Setting up Windows®

Make sure the following information is available:
 Name of user
 Name of company
 Name of work group
 IP address assignment: static or via DHCP
 With static IP addresses: IP address, subnet, gateway, name of DNS server
 Windows product key (located on the inside of the front cover)
• Follow the instructions on screen to set up the display controller with specific regional settings (country,
time, currency, keyboard layout).
Regional Windows® settings
During the initial configuration, a user account is created.

• Enter a user name, password, and a hint for the password.
Hostname (computer name) limitations:

Hostname labels may contain only the ASCII letters 'a' through 'z' (case-insensitive), the
digits '0' through '9', and the hyphen (-).
Hostname labels cannot begin or end with a hyphen.
No other symbols, punctuation characters, underscores or blank spaces are permitted.
Avoid using only numerical characters or names consisting entirely of hexadecimal digits
('0' through '9' plus the letters 'A' through 'F').

of the controller front cover. Open the cover to read out the product key.

For performance reasons, do not use any themes of the type Windows AERO!
Windows Aero is a set of themes to change the appearance.

• Select Control Panel | Appearance and Personalization | Change the Theme
• Make sure none of the Aero Themes are applied.

Failure to observe these instructions may result in performance problems.

The ECU-xxx systems have been tested with the Windows version installed.
Any security updates and Microsoft® hotfixes bear a risk of negative impact on the
system's performance. Nevertheless, we recommend to activate automatic updates.
®
In Windows 7, Internet Explorer identifies a web site or share as in the Internet Zone if the IP address or the
fully qualified domain name contains a period. Therefore it is safe to add the IP address of the ECU-xxx to the
Trusted Sites to allow clients in the network to connect to the server using its IP address.
4.2 Activating Windows®

Activation is possible via direct connection, a modem, or via the phone, cf.

4.3 Windows® 7 localization

Localization is in the responsibility of the customer, and is not part of the delivery volume.

You can change the display language of Windows on the Control Panel | Region and Language on the
Keyboards and Languages tab. Some display languages are installed by default, while others require installing
additional language files via Internet connection.
Language packs (in addition to the ones that have been preinstalled as mentioned above) are available in
Windows 7 Ultimate through Windows Update as optional updates. They are not installed automatically.

Use the Windows 7 Control Panel to set up your display.
• Select Control Panel | All Control Panel Items | Display | Screen Resolution
Alternatively:
• Right-click on the desktop.
• From the context menu, select Screen resolution.
The following dialog box is displayed:

If connected accordingly, the dialog box shows the control screen as primary monitor (1) and the display wall
as secondary monitor (2).
• Make sure that all monitors are listed!
• Click Detect to trigger an update of the monitors detected in case a monitor is missing.
• Click Identify to see the display numbering.

• Arrange the monitors in accordance with your display layout.
The graphics card device (in our example the ECU-4DPOUT device) should have the Extend my Windows
desktop to this display control selected.
• To access the Wall Configuration Properties tab, highlight the secondary monitor by clicking once in-
side the box, and then selecting Advanced settings (see above).

Always close all video window applications before executing an operation that modifies
the settings of any of the attached displays. Failure to do so may cause the machine to lock
up and require a reboot.
• Edit the settings on the Wall Configuration tab to meet your requirements.
Color Palette: Select the number of colors to use.
Refresh Rate: Use the drop down arrow to select a refresh rate for the desktop. Only the re-
fresh rates available at the selected resolution and color depth are displayed.
The maximum settings are restricted to the capabilities of the screens connected
to the system.
Source of Mode: When the Wall Configuration tab is selected, the display driver reads the EDID
information from each monitor and reads the registry to find detailed display
timing information.
The Source of Mode group box shows the mode sources available for the se-
lected resolution and color depth.
Source of Mode has four options.
 Default: Monitor timing information from the display driver’s in-
ternal tables.
 Custom: Monitor timing information from the registry.
 Monitor (Master): Monitor timing information from the monitor attached to
output 1 of the master ECU-4DPOUT is used for all outputs.
 Monitor (Each): The monitor timing information from each monitor is used
for the output connected to that monitor.
No. Screens: Change the number of screens the display driver uses. We recommend installing
the driver (using install.exe) for all ECU-4DPOUT boards in your system.
Screen Arrangement: Use the drop-down menu to select the type of screen arrangement you require.
The illustration in the Monitor Configuration group box will reflect your choice.
 Force DVI Output: When the display driver initializes, it reads the EDIDs of the attached screens to
determine if the DVI (digital) or analog outputs should be used. If no monitor
EDID is read, this control is used to decide which output to enable.
If the checkbox is in an indeterminate state, it signifies that the enabled outputs
are not as requested by the user. This will occur if a mixture of analog and digital
screens is used, or if the type of monitor used is different to the Force DVI state.
When the check box status is changed, the Apply button will become active.
Select Apply to force the required output.
Since the DVI (digital) output supports a pixel dot-clock frequency lower than the
analog output, the resolution dialog is updated when the check box is changed
to reflect the resolutions supported by the active output.
 Prune Modes: Enabling this checkbox limits the resolutions displayed in the resolution box to
the ones supported by all of the screens connected to the active outputs of the
ECU-4DPOUT card. This information is read from the monitor EDIDs when the
Wall Configuration tab is opened. If the status of this checkbox is changed, the
resolution control will be updated.
In some instances, these changes may require a system restart.

6.1 Starting the application

When initially starting your machine, select to Display Control Administrator on the Start menu.
The following dialog box is displayed.

• Enter your specifics and click OK (cf. section Configure security level in Display Control).

• To start Display Control for the first time, and to run it on your local machine, click the Windows Start
button, and select All Programs | Display Control – My Computer.
To connect to another client when initially starting, click the Windows Start button, and select All
Programs | Display Control.
Once you have started Display Control for the first time, the link on the Start menu will reflect the starting
option last chosen (Display Control – My Computer or Display Control).

6.2 Connecting to Display Control server

• If the Display Control application and the Display Control server are installed on the same machine,
select Display Control | My Computer from the programs menu. Alternatively, double click My
Computer in the Machines list on the Display Control application toolbar.
The Machines list shows the Display Control servers that have been previously connected to.
The Layouts list shows the most recently used layout files.
• Double click to open the selected file.

6.5 Displaying inputs on the wall

6.5.1 Creating windows
Once the connection to the server has been established, you can create windows for display.
• To do so, use the New menu or the Toolbar application.
Using the New menu allows creating and displaying the following windows:
 ECU - An ECU output can be displayed if an ECU-2DVI, ECU-2DP, ECU-4DVI, ECU-1DVI-DL, and/or ECU-
8VID card is installed.
 Preset - A preset window can be displayed provided an ECU card is installed in the system and one or
several ECU windows have been saved as presets.
 Application – Windows® based applications can be opened and displayed, e.g. RealVNC Viewer, Mi-
crosoft® PowerPoint, DGCPlay., Microsoft® Internet Explorer, and others.
• Select Display Control from the Configure menu to capture the desktop and to display in the Display
Control application window.
• Use the Display Control application Toolbar to select a particular device or input:
The application Toolbar displays a list of the type of windows that can be opened, depending on the hard-
ware you have installed in your machine. Use the drop down menus to select the required inputs for display.
To open the required inputs, you can:
• Select the required input using the cursor and drag it to a preferred position on the wall.
• Double click the required input. The window will open, positioned at the top left of the display wall.

• Open multiple inputs by pressing the Shift key or the Ctrl key, and clicking the required number of inputs
with the mouse.
Using the Define Grid function, the windows can be placed at specific positions using a 3-pixel width snap-
to-grid functionality.
6.5.2 Moving windows around the display wall

Setting up a video wall requires windows to be moved on the desktop. You can move all window types in the
same way.
6.5.2.1 Using the Window Properties dialog box

Windows can be moved using the Window Properties dialog accessible via the Window menu. Using the
Position controls Top and Left, you can position the windows anywhere on the display wall.
6.5.2.2 Using the mouse

• Select the window in the Display Control application by use of the mouse.
• Keeping the left mouse button pressed, drag the window to any preferred position on the wall. Used in
conjunction with grids and guides, the window can be placed at an exact position.
• Again, by using the mouse, right-click the window in the Display Control application, and select Move.
This allows you to move the window around the display wall without having to keep the mouse button
pressed. To release the window at a preferred position, click the left mouse button.
6.5.3 Changing window properties

You can change the properties of a window using the Windows Properties, Input Settings and On Screen
Display Properties dialog windows.
 The Window Properties permit to change the position of the window, the size and aspect ratio, the style,
caption title and the window ID.
 The Input Settings enable to change the appearance of a Display Control inputs using the Input, Cropping
and Display setting controls.
 The On Screen Display Properties allows configuring the display type, text, and the font details of the on
screen display.

6.6 Resizing windows

The windows can be resized in various ways depending on the style setup on the Window Properties sheet.
6.6.1 If the window has a border and title bar

• Using the mouse, click on the top, bottom, left, or right of the window border. The cursor will change
into an arrow-shaped size cursor as shown below.
• Use the mouse to drag the border until the window has the required size.
• With the ECU Window active, select the Alt key and the spacebar on the keyboard.
The following menu is displayed:
• Select the menu item Size. The cursor will change into a cross hair cursor displayed in the center of the
ECU Window:
• Use the cursor keys to resize the window.

• Use the command line interface window as described in section Command line interface.
• Access the Windows Properties dialog box by selecting Window Properties from the Windows menu.
Use the Size controls to resize the window.
The application can also be resized in the Display Control desktop representation.

6.6.2 If the window has no title bar or border

• Use the Display Wall representation (wire frame or capture desktop)

When a window does not have a border or title bar, Windows will normally disable its sizing controls.
Display Wall representation mimics this behavior and also stops the user resizing the window. When the
mouse is positioned over the window border, the shape of the mouse pointer is changed to indicate that it
cannot be resized:

This behavior can be overridden by holding down the Ctrl key.

Holding down Ctrl on the keyboard as the mouse is moved around over the active Display Wall representa-
tion will allow the window to be resized. The pointer shape now changes to the arrows allowing the resize to
take place:

Dragging the window border will now resize the window.

• Access the Windows Properties dialog box by selecting the item Window Properties from the Windows
menu. Use the Size controls to resize the window.
The application can also be resized in the Display Control desktop representation.
6.7 Repositioning windows

Windows can be repositioned anywhere on the desktop. This can be achieved in a number of ways depend-
ing on the style setup.
6.7.1 If the window has a border and title bar

• Using the mouse, position the cursor on the title bar as shown below.
• Press and hold the left mouse button, and drag the window to the desired position.
• With the ECU Window active, select the Alt key and the spacebar on the keyboard.

• Select the menu item Move. The cursor will change to a cross hair cursor displayed in the center of the

• Use the cursor keys to move the window to the desired position.

6.8 Saving/loading wall layouts

6.8.1 Saving layouts
When your display wall has been configured, i.e. all the required windows have been opened and positioned,
you may wish to save the layout.
Display Control allows you to save the layout as a .lay file, and store it on your machine for future use.
• To save a layout, use the File menu on the Display Control application, and select Save or Save As…
6.8.2 Loading layout files

To load a saved layout file, proceed as follows:
• With the Display Control application open, select the menu item File | Open…
You will be asked if you wish to save the changes you have made.
• Browse to the layout file you wish to load and select Open.
The layout will be opened and the windows will be positioned on the display wall.
6.8.3 Saving a window as preset

Once a window has been configured and the window properties and cropping have been set, the window
can be saved as a preset. The presets are saved with a .WCP file extension in a folder called Preset Windows
in the directory which has the Display Control server installed.
• To save an ECU window as a preset, select the desired ECU window displayed. Then select Save as
Preset from the Window menu. Alternatively, right click the ECU window, and select Save as Preset.

6.9.2.1 Opening a new (empty) layout file
When New is selected:

 A prompt is displayed asking if any changes to the current layout are to be saved.
 If changes are to be saved, click Yes and follow the steps detailed in Save/Save As….
 If changes are not required to be saved click No.
 The windows on the machine close.
 The image of the desktop from the machine will continue to be displayed.
The New option is only available when connected to a machine.
6.9.2.2 Opening an existing layout file
When Open is selected:

 A prompt is displayed asking if any changes are to be saved.
 Browse to the layout file to be opened.
When a layout file has been located and selected, the following takes place:
If a current active connection is being used, and the selected layout file is for a different computer, the fol-
lowing dialog is displayed.

• Select Cancel and the operation will be terminated.

• Select OK:
• If  Close Windows is selected, all windows are closed and the connection is terminated.
Previously saved layouts

In case an error occurs when opening a previously saved layout, the following dialog will be displayed:
The dialog displays details of any errors found by the application when opening a layout.
• Use the up/down arrows to scroll through the displayed text.
• Select the Save As… button to save the information as a text file for later use, or to assist in support que-
ries.
6.9.2.3 Saving the current layout
• Select Save to save the current layout. If the layout has not been previously saved, i.e. it is a new layout,
the Save As… dialog is displayed.

• Browse to the folder where the layout is to be saved, enter a File name and click Save.
6.9.2.4 Saving a layout with a specific name and location
• Select Save As… to save the layout with a specific name to a particular location using the displayed dialog
box.
This function is only available if there is an active connection.
6.9.2.5 Opening a configuration
The Display Control offline layout editor allows layout files to be created and edited without physically dis-
playing any windows on the data wall. Display Control can be connected offline on either the server ma-
chine or a machine without any display wall hardware, for example a laptop.
An offline connection in Display Control is initiated by opening a configuration file. This file must have been
exported from a server machine (cf. Exporting a configuration), and will contain a snapshot of the hardware
and software configuration on that machine.
• Select Open Configuration to open a previously saved configuration file and the following dialog is dis-
played:

• Browse to, and select the required configuration file (.cfg) and the dialog is populated with the configu-
ration settings summary including the number of display devices, the resolution of the Display Control
display and a list of hardware contained within the system.

• Click on Open to initiate the offline connection. Once the configuration has loaded, Display Control
displays a representation of the machine that was used to export the configuration.
6.9.2.6 Importing a configuration
This function allows the user to import a Display Control configuration from a file. This may consist of a
backup file or a configuration that has been edited in the offline editor on another machine.
Import Configuration should only be used on configuration files that have been exported from the current
Display Control installation.
While this feature can be used to transfer settings between installations, care must be
taken to ensure that key hardware and software aspects of the configurations match. This
includes the topology and resolution of the display devices, the version of Display Control
and the list of capture cards installed.
• Select Import Configuration from the File menu and the following dialog is displayed:

Browse to, and select, the required configuration file (.cfg) and the dialog is populated with the configura-
tion settings summary including the number of display devices, the resolution of the Display Control display
and a list of hardware contained in the system. The dialog also contains options and a selection of compo-
nents for import.
Components to Import
The Components to import controls allow the user to select the set of components that will be imported.
Components available are:
  Display Control - This includes most settings available under the Configure\Display Control menus and
also Screen Labels. Screen Labels can be imported from a backup but cannot be edited offline.
  ECU - This consists of ECU input labels.
  Application - This consists of all applications and their associated inputs.
Configuration Mismatch
The Configuration Mismatch dialog is displayed if key hardware and software components in the configura-
tion file being imported do not match the current system.
If the user chooses to ignore this warning and proceed with the import operation, the
Display Control configuration may be damaged and a re-installation required.
Once a configuration file has been successfully imported then the Rollback Configuration option (cf. Tools
menu (Accessing other tools)) can be used to restore Display Control to its previous configuration.

6.9.2.7 Exporting a configuration
This function provides the ability to export the system configuration into a file. This file can be used in the
offline layout editor or as a backup, and can be imported to a non-server machine (e.g. laptop) via USB or
your network (cf. section Importing a configuration). This configuration file will contain a representation of
the hardware and software on the system. This includes: display and capture devices, screen and ECU labels,
the application configuration, the configuration and general Display Control settings.
When Export Configuration is selected, the machine that Display Control is currently connected to is used
to generate the configuration file.
The Export Configuration option can also be used while Display Control is connected offline to save any
changes made back into the configuration file. This modified configuration file can then be imported back
into the server machine.
6.9.2.8 Connecting the application to a specific server
The application can run on a local machine or an external client. Depending on this, the procedure to follow
is different (cf. section Connecting the application using a local client or Connecting the application using an
external client, resp.)
Connecting the application using a local client

• Select Connect… from the File menu. The following dialog will be displayed:

• Use this dialog box to specify which machine is to be controlled using the Display Control application:
• Use the drop down arrow to display a list of the most recently selected machines; the list will include My
Computer to be used to connect to the machine where the Display Control application is running.
• Use this dialog to specify the Windows settings:
•  Add existing windows to representation: Displays the open windows.

•  Close existing windows: Closes all Display Control managed windows.
• Select OK to connect to the selected machine.
Connecting the application using an external client

An external client connection is needed when you would like to run the Display Control application from a
different machine (= external client) over a network. Therefore you will need to:
1. Install the Display Control application on the external client by making the selection below during the
installation process (see section Application installation/upgrade).

2. Connect the external client to the Display Control application over the network. Therefore proceed as
follow:
• Select Connect… from the File menu and the following dialog is displayed:
• Use this dialog to specify which machine is to be controlled using the Display Control application
The machine can be specified by name or by IP address.

• Select Browse… to locate a machine on the local network.
• Use this dialog to specify the Windows settings:
•  Add existing windows to representation: Displays the open windows.

•  Close existing windows: Closes all Display Control managed windows.
• Select OK to connect to the selected machine.
In case you connect to a machine that has been configured to authenticate connections:
You will be required to provide a user name and password.
The user name and password must be for an account on the machine you are connecting to,
or on the domain if the machine is part of a domain.
If the error message below is displayed one of the following problems has occurred:

 The user name, the password or the machine/domain that you have entered are not correct. Try entering
the details again.
 If the machine you are connecting to is running Windows XP® Service Pack 2, and you have not entered
a password, you will need to change your account so that you have a password.
 If the machine you are connecting to is running Windows XP®, and it is not participating in a domain, you
will need to change the Network Logon settings on the machine. Network Authentication.
 You can create a shortcut on your desktop that specifies the machine and your user name. When you
double click this shortcut, it will take you straight to the Logon dialog for you to enter your password.

6.9.2.9 Working offline
If Display Control is running on a server machine, selecting Work Offline… immediately opens an offline
connection using a snapshot of the current system configuration.
If Display Control is running on a non-server machine (i.e. an application-only install), selecting Work
Offline… displays the Open Configuration File dialog:
This allows the user to browse to, and select, a previously saved configuration file.
Once a file has been selected, an offline connection is opened. The offline connection will contain the text
My Computer - Offline in the title bar.
When Display Control is connected offline, the user is able to perform the majority of operations available on
an online system. This includes opening and positioning windows, changing window properties and inputs,

screen labels, saving layout files etc. Certain functionalities, such as Screen Order and the Remote
Command Line Interface are not available offline.
If an existing layout file is opened while offline, the machine name in the file will not be changed when it is re-
saved. If new layout files are created while offline, they will be saved with the machine name from the ma-
chine used to export the configuration file.
In addition to layout files, the offline editor allows the user to view and change the Display Control configura-
tion. This includes Display Control screen labels, capture input labels, models and applications. If any config-
uration changes are made while offline, they need to be imported back onto the Display Control server be-
fore they can be used.
• To exit the offline configuration select Disconnect… from the File menu.
The Disconnect… dialog on a server machine presents three options, the user can either import any changes
made to the configuration back onto the online system, save the amended configuration to a file for later use
or discard any changes made to the offline configuration:
On a non-server machine, the dialog displayed merely offers the option to save the changes made:
6.9.2.10 Closing the current connection
This option is only available when a connection is active.

When Disconnect… is selected, the following dialog is displayed:

The File menu contains a section where the six most recently used files are displayed, the most recent at the
top of the list. By selecting a particular file, the layout will be reloaded.
Most recently used file list:
• To select a file, simply click it or press the corresponding number key on your keyboard.
If a file is selected that no longer exists, the file name will be automatically deleted.

6.9.3.1 Opening a new preset window
When Preset Window… is selected from the New menu, the following dialog is displayed:
The New | Preset Windows… option will not be available unless an ECU card is installed and
preset windows have been previously saved.
• Use the drop down list to select the preferred preset window and click OK.
An ECU window with the same window settings, input properties, and on screen display that were saved as a
preset is created and displayed at the top left of the display.
6.9.3.2 Opening a new ECU Window
When ECU Window… is selected from the New menu, the following dialog is displayed:

• Use the drop down list to select the preferred input and click OK.

6.9.3.3 Opening the Run Application dialog
When Run Application is selected from the New menu, the Run Application dialog is displayed. The dialog
has two tabs, Run Application and Run Application with Input:
Application The full path of the application executable must be specified.

You can select the application as follows:
• Use the drop down list to select a previously run application
• Click on the Browse… button to select a new application
• Type in the full path of the application executable
Command line Use the Command line edit box to specify parameters for the application. Many appli-
cations accept the name of a file to be opened. For details of command line argu-
ments, refer to your application documentation.
Start in folder The Start in folder is the folder in which the application is run. If no Start in folder is
specified, the application will run in the folder in which it resides.
Command The Command Line window displays the full command line that will be passed to
Line: Display Control.

The Run Application with Input dialog allows the user to identify and select applications created in the
Application dialog on the Configure menu.
Application Use the Application drop down list to select the required application. The list will
only display those applications that have been configured on the system.
Input When the application has been selected, use the Input drop down list to select the
required input associated with the application.
Switches Once the application and input have been selected the Switches edit box is auto-
matically populated with the switches for that specific application.
Path Once the application and input have been selected the Path edit box is automatical-
ly populated with the path to the application.
Command The command line window displays the resulting command from the switches and
Line: path edit boxes. The command is executed by clicking the Run button.
A new input can be created by editing the Input drop down list. Type in the name of the new input and edit
the path or browse to a new file in the Path edit box. By clicking on the Run and Save button, the new input
will run and be saved on the system. The new input will be displayed in the input window in the Application
dialog on the Configure menu.
This dialogue cannot be used to modify and save an existing input.
Any modifications to the Switches edit box will result in the Run and Save button being disabled irrespective
of other changes made to any other controls on this dialogue.
With Run Application…, Display Control can launch any application. Unfortunately, each application works
in its own way so the exact outcome when you launch an application varies.
DGCPlay
DGCPlay is a utility that will play movie files including WMV, MPEG, and AVI, depending on the codecs in-
stalled on the system. Some media will require additional codecs not installed as standard components of
®
Windows .
• To activate the DGCPlay application, open Run Application… from the New menu by specifying
Dgcplay.exe as the target, followed by the command line options separated by spaces.
The Dgcplay.exe will be located in the Display Control folder.

The picture.exe will be located in the Display Control folder.

Enter text for the description in the title bar. By default, the picture is displayed without a border or title

RealVNC Viewer
When you run RealVNC Viewer, it will display a dialog asking you for a RealVNC server, and then display an-
other dialog box for a password for that server. You may not be able to respond to these dialogs.
Once a connection has been made using RealVNC Viewer, you can save the connection details to a configu-
ration file. The configuration file can be specified on the command line allowing RealVNC Viewer to run
without displaying any dialogs.

• Connect to the machine you wish to view with RealVNC Viewer.
• Click the icon at left end of the title bar to display the menu.

• Use the up/down arrows to adjust the Position of the guide, i.e. the number of pixels from the top for
vertical, or left for horizontal. Then click OK. A guide will be created at the specified position.
You can also create a guide by clicking on one of the rulers.
6.9.4.2 Define Grid…

Using the Define Grid… option, a grid may be placed over the representation to assist in the positioning of
windows. The grid has a three pixel snap-to-grid functionality.
• Using the up/down arrows, select the size of grid required.

The Units pane on the dialog box offers two options:

• Select Pixels to define the grid can by pixel size i.e. 150 x 150 pixels.
• Select  Divisions of a desktop to divide the desktop into equal sized rectangles depending on the num-
ber of divisions selected.
• When the correct grid spacing has been selected, click OK. A grid will be displayed in the representation
window.
• To reset a defined grid, first select the Clear all Guides option (cf. Clear all Guides), otherwise the previ-
ous grid will remain displayed.
6.9.4.3 Clear Guide

• Right click on a guide in the ruler, and select this option to clear the guide.
6.9.4.4 Clear all Guides

• The Clear All Guides option removes all guides from the ECU-xxx application window.
6.9.4.5 Snap Sensitivity

The snap sensitivity dialog allows you to customize the sensitivity of the snap-to-grid functionality for the cur-
rent connection.
The sensitivity value affects the distance that representation windows need to be moved in order to snap to
the nearest guide. The closer the sensitivity is to the maximum value 10, the stronger the snap effect.

Selecting Window Properties… from the Window menu will display a properties dialog box relevant to the
type of window currently active:
ECU Properties
The ECU Window Properties sheet enables to change the appearance of the ECU Window.
• When the required changes have been entered, click on Apply or OK for the changes to take effect.
• Select Window Properties… with an ECU Window activated.
The following dialog is displayed.
The various panes of the ECU Window Properties dialog box are explained on the following pages.
The position of the selected ECU window can be adjusted to suit your requirements using the following con-
trols:
Position Top and Left
Using the up and down arrows, you can position the selected ECU
Window anywhere on the desktop. The values are in pixels.
The value Top = 0 and Left = 0 will position the ECU Window in the
top left corner of the desktop.
When the required values have been entered, select Apply and the
changes will take effect.
Size The size of the selected ECU window can be adjusted to suit your
requirements using the following controls:

Width and The required width and height of the ECU Window can be deter-

the height; the width is adjusted automatically so that the aspect ratio
is maintained.

Maintain aspect If you select  Maintain aspect ratio, you can specify the aspect ratio
ratio you would like the ECU Window to have.
When the required values have been entered, click on Apply or OK
and the changes will take effect.
Style You can change the appearance of the ECU Window can be
changed to suit your particular requirements:
Border and title Select this option to display the border and title bar of the active ECU
bar Window.
Border only Select this option to display the ECU Window with just a border. In
this state, the ECU Window may still be resized using the borders.
No border or Select this option to display the source only. The ECU Window can
title bar only be resized by using the Size and Position function as described
above. See section Resizing windows.
Select Apply or OK and the style chosen will take effect.
Show menu bar Activate this checkbox to display the ECU Window menu bar.
To restore the menu bar, you can access the Window Properties
sheet by right clicking in the ECU Window and selecting Window
Properties from the menu.  Show menu bar can then be selected.
Always on top If the Always on top option is selected, the windows will be displayed
in front of all others windows that are not always on top.

Cursor Always Show Always shows the cursor in the client area of the window
Always Hide Always hides the cursor in the client area of the window
Hide when win- Only hides the cursor in the client area of an active window. If the
dow active window is divided using the split screen function, the cursor is visible
in all sub-windows that are not active.
Cursor hiding only works when the cursor is stationary over the ECU
Window.
Window ID
Use the up/down arrows to select a required Window ID. The

Window ID identifies a window enabling it to be modified from the
command line. See Command line interface dialog.
Caption
You can use the Caption edit box to change the caption in the title
bar of the selected ECU Window.
Variables… The variables function is a means of displaying a changeable value on
the title bar.
Invalid Input
Should the source be disconnected, switched off, changed to a mode

that is out of range of the ECU capture card, and no frames are being
captured, you have the option to:
Display message after – milliseconds
If you want to be made aware that the source cannot be captured,
you can display a message informing you that no signal is being re-
ceived, for example:

Format
This option allows you select the pixel format you wish use. The
Capture Format affects the performance of a system.
Automatic Select  Automatic and the data is captured in the same pixel depth
as the desktop
5-5-5 or 5-6-5 If either of these options is selected, the format will be captured at 16
bit. For most systems this is by far the most efficient
8-8-8 If this option is selected then the format will be captured at 32 bit.

Deinterlace
Deinterlace is only available if an interlaced source is being captured.

Bob  Bob is more suited to captures displaying motion and offers higher
frames per second.
Weave  Weave is more suited for images captured with little or no motion;
any change in the captured image will cause artifacts known as tear-
ing.
None Only a single field will be displayed.
Capture Rate
The Capture Rate control gives a degree of control over the capture
rate by enabling you to select the percentage of frames to be cap-
tured from the source. 100% is the default capture rate.
For example:
If the refresh rate is 60 Hz, selecting a capture at 15% will capture a
maximum of 9 frames per second (FPS), selecting 10% will capture a
maximum of 6 FPS.
If a capture rate of 100% is selected, an attempt is made to capture as
many frames as possible. In this instance, the capture may be directed
to the buffer at the same time as the buffer is being displayed. This
can sometimes cause a single horizontal tear on moving images in
the ECU application window.
A different capture rate can be selected for when the ECU Window is
inactive. This enables system resources to be managed more effi-
ciently. Reducing the percentage of frames captured for an inactive
window will free more system resources for other tasks.
Select  Capture at ___ when window is inactive, and use the drop
down menu to select the required capture rate for when the window
is inactive.
Application Window Properties

There are various ways to access the Windows Properties page for the Application window. Select from the
following:
 In the Display Control Software application, with the window active, open the Window menu and select
Window Properties… from the list of menu items.
 In the displayed window, open the Window menu and select Window Properties…
 In the Display Control Software application, place the cursor over the representation of the window and
click the right mouse button. Select Window Properties… from the list of options.
 Place the cursor over the active window on the desktop, click the right mouse button and select Window
Properties… from the list of menu items.
 In the Display Control Software application, if a window has been minimized, an application icon will be
displayed in the application mini bar. Place the cursor over the Application icon and right click the mouse
button. Select Window Properties… from the list of options.

When this dialog is displayed, the application window is disabled, preventing other users from modifying or
closing it.
Size and Position The size and position of the window can be entered manually. The position values
refer to the top left corner of the desktop.
Style
The Style options can be used to alter the border style of the window. For example,
select the  Border only option and the title bar will not be displayed, select the
 No border or title bar and the application only is displayed.
The  Show menu bar checkbox allows you to hide the menu bar.
If the  Always on top checkbox is activated, the window is displayed in front of all
others windows that are not always on top.
Caption
The caption box displays the title of the application window.

Window ID
Use the up/down arrows to select a required Window ID. The Window ID identifies
a window enabling it to be modified from the command line. See Command line
interface dialog.

of window currently active, i.e. either ECU Input Settings or Application Input Settings.
ECU Input Settings

There are various ways to access the ECU Input Settings page. Select from the following:
 In the Display Control application, with the ECU Window active, open the Window menu and select
Input Settings… from the list of options.
 In the Display Control application, place the cursor over the representation of the ECU Window and
click the right mouse button. Select Input Settings… from the list of options.
 In the Display Control application, if a window has been minimized, an application icon will be displayed
in the application mini bar. Place the cursor over the ECU icon and right click the mouse button. Select
Input Settings… from the list of options.
The Input Settings sheet allows you to control how the source is captured and displayed in the ECU
Window. All the controls on this sheet are interactive; therefore, any changes made are shown when the next
frame of data is displayed in the ECU Window.
There are two types of Input Setting sheets in the ECU application; i.e. RGB/DVI capture and Video capture:

The Source control specifies which source is displayed in the win-

change.

Resolution and Width The Width specifies the horizontal resolution of the source.
Refresh
Height The Height specifies the vertical resolution of the source.
Vertical Refresh The Vertical Refresh specifies the vertical refresh rate of the captured
source.
Cropping
The Cropping controls allow displaying a specific area of the signal

within the ECU Window. The coordinates are referred to the start
position defined by Horizontal Position and Vertical Position.
For a single ECU Window, a different cropping area is remembered
for each video mode. If the source being captured changes, a differ-
ent cropping area will be used.
Video The Video Adjustment controls describe the video timings being

Composite/S-Video:
Horizontal Posi- The Horizontal Position specifies the offset, in pixels, from the end
tion of the horizontal sync to the start of the active video.

sample lines within the source. This includes the active portion of
video and blanking.
Phase If the captured image is noisy, it may be that the signal is being sam-
pled close to the transition between pixels. The Phase control allows
you alter the point at which the signal is sampled. You can think of it
as a fine horizontal position control. This control is not available
when Composite or S-Video is being captured.

Vertical Position The Vertical Position specifies the offset, in lines, from the end of the
vertical sync to the start of the active video. This control is not avail-
able when Composite or S-Video is being captured.
Black Level At the beginning of each line the source must be sampled to meas-
ure the black level. This sample is used as a reference for determin-
ing the brightness of the pixels on the line. The Black Level control
allows you to specify the position at which the black level of the
signal is sampled. This control is not available when Composite or S-
Video is being captured.
Video Standard Select the required video standard from those available in the drop
down menu. The video adjustment settings are not available when a
DVI source is being captured.
Color
Adjustments
Brightness The Brightness control allows you brighten or darken the capture.
Contrast The Contrast control allows you to alter the difference between the
light parts of the capture and the dark parts of the capture.
Color Domain This setting allows changing the default color domain in the rare
cases that the driver could not detect the right color domain of the
input.
Saturation The Saturation control allows you to increase or decrease the satu-
ration.
Hue The Hue control allows you to increase or decrease the hue. This is
only available for NTSC captures.
Color Balance… Select the Color Balance… button to change the color balance for
the specified input connector. This function is only available when
capturing analog sources.

The Color Balance dialog allows you to change the color balance
for an input connector.
All color controls are the only ones available when a DVI source is
being captured. The Red, Green and Blue controls are for RGB ana-
log only.
All controls in this dialog box are interactive so the changes you
make will be seen when the next frame of data is displayed in the
ECU Window.
All Colors The Brightness and Contrast controls alter the settings for all colors.
These are the same as the Brightness and Contrast controls on the
ECU Input Settings sheet.
Red The Red controls allow the brightness and contrast of the red part of
the ECU signal to be adjusted a small amount relative to the overall
brightness and contrast settings.
Green The Green controls allow the brightness and contrast of the green
part of the ECU signal to be adjusted a small amount relative to the
overall brightness and contrast settings.
Blue The Blue controls allow the brightness and contrast of the blue part
of the ECU signal to be adjusted a small amount relative to the over-
all brightness and contrast settings.
Reset The Reset button will set all the values to the default settings.
Application Input Settings

There are various ways to access the Application Input Settings page. Select from the following:
 In the Display Control application, with the Application Window active, open the Window menu and
select Input Settings… from the list of options.
 In the Display Control application, place the cursor over the representation of the Application Window
and click the right mouse button. Select Input Settings… from the list of options.

right mouse button. Select Carousel Properties from the list of options.
 In the ECU application, if a window has been minimized, an application icon will be displayed in the ECU
application bar. Place the cursor over the application icon and right click the mouse button. Select
Carousel Properties from the list of options.
Carousel Settings
The Carousel Settings sheet allows defining a number of inputs which the window will cycle through, per-
mitting to view each in turn. To define the inputs to use, create a Display List. All entries in the list can be
viewed for a specified period, and with different cropping rectangles. Once a Carousel Display List has been
created, starting the Carousel will cause the ECU window to automatically cycle through the list of inputs.
To configure the Carousel Properties for an ECU window, right click the active window, and select Carousel
Properties. The following dialog is displayed:

When the Carousel Settings dialog is displayed, the ECU window will be disabled, preventing other users
from modifying or closing it.
The Carousel Settings dialog features three group fields:
 Input Selection
 Cropping
 Carousel Display List
Input Selection
Using the Input drop-down menu, select the desired input source. You can adjust its
display time at intervals of one second using the Duration spin controls. The minimum
display time is one second and the maximum is one day. The default setting is one
minute.
Cropping
The cropping controls allow selecting a rectangular region of the input signal to be
displayed in the ECU window. The Top and Left controls specify the position of the
cropping rectangle referred to the top-left corner of the input signal. The Width and
Height controls specify the size of the cropping rectangle. The On radio button must
be selected for these values to be implemented. Selecting Off will ignore the cropping

rectangle and display the raw input signal.

If the source is VGA, an Overscan radio button can be selected. Overscan will auto-
matically configure the best cropping values for displaying the full input signal.
Carousel
Display List
Once the input, duration, and cropping have been set, select the Insert button to in-
clude the input in the Carousel Display List. The list will show the input label, the dura-
tion of the display, and the cropping details.
To remove an input from the display list, highlight the input, and select the Remove
button.
To change the display parameters, e.g. increase the duration, select the input from the
list, and amend the duration to the required time. Once the input has been changed,
make sure to select the Update button to update the list.
Note: Modifying the input will not affect the Display List until the Update button has
been activated.
When the list of displays has been compiled, you can change the order in which they
are displayed by highlighting the respective input and selecting the Up/Down arrows to
move the input up and down in the list.
By default, each input will be displayed for the specified duration regardless of a signal
being present. To prevent any disconnected inputs from being displayed in the ECU
Window, activate the checkbox  Skip disconnected inputs. This will cause the
Carousel to advance to the next valid input automatically.
• Once the Carousel list has been defined, click Start to launch the display sequence.
While the Carousel is active, the Carousel Properties dialog will be disabled and the Start button will turn
into Stop. To stop the Carousel, select the Stop button. The dialog will be enabled.
While the Carousel is active, both the Carousel and Input Properties dialogs will be disabled.
Saving the Carousel settings in a Layout or Preset file

The Save Layout and Save Preset operations will store the defined Carousel settings, including the start/stop
status to file. When loading a layout or preset file containing a window with a Carousel input list, the window
will automatically switch to the first input on the list, and then start or stop the Carousel according to its sta-
tus at the time the file was saved.

Simple Text Select to insert the required text into the Simple Text edit box.
When the  Simple text option is selected, the Simple Text,
Background, Margins and Alignment group fields will be dis-

Fixed size When  Fixed size is selected, the OSD is displayed at the same
size regardless of the size of the window.

Variables The Variables… function is a means of displaying a changeable
value in the title bar.
Font Select Font… and the following dialog is displayed:
Using the groups available, the characteristics of the font can be

determined.
Line wrapping With  Line wrapping switched on, if a line of text does not fit
between the margins, line breaks are inserted between words to
produce shorter lines.
If  Line wrapping is switched off, the text is displayed with the
same spaces and line breaks as it has been entered.
Background
Transparent When  Transparent is selected, the ECU capture in the area

behind the text is visible.

Opaque When  Opaque is selected, the area behind the text is displayed
in a chosen color. A range of colors are available by selecting
Color…
Margins
The margins define the area in which OSD is displayed.

If  Scale with window is selected, the margins are measured in
pixels of the source.
If  Fixed size is selected, the margins are measured in pixels of
the interior of the ECU Window.
Any part of the OSD that falls outside the margins is not dis-
played.
Alignment
The alignment controls allow you to position the OSD within the
margins.
Vertical If you select  Top, the top edge of the OSD will be displayed
against the top margin.
If you select  Center, the center of the OSD will be positioned
half way between the top and bottom margins.
If you select  Bottom, the bottom edge of the OSD will be dis-
played against the bottom margin.
Horizontal If you select  Left, the left edge of the OSD will be positioned
against the left margin and each of the individual lines will be left
aligned.
If you select  Center, the center of the OSD will be positioned
half way between the left and right margins and each of the indi-
vidual lines will be centered.
If you select  Right, the right edge of the OSD will be posi-
tioned against the right margin and each of the individual lines
will be right aligned.
6.9.5.5 Split into Sub-Windows

There are various ways to access the Split into Sub-Windows page. Select from the following:
 In the Display Control application, with an ECU Window active, open the Window menu and select Split
into Sub-Windows.
 In the displayed ECU Window, open the Window menu and select Split into Sub-Windows.
 In the Display Control application, place the cursor over the representation of the ECU Window and
click the right mouse button. Select Split into Sub-Windows from the list of options.
 Place the cursor over the active ECU Window on the desktop, click the right mouse button and select
Split into Sub-Windows from the list of options.
The Split into Sub-Windows function only applies to ECU Windows.
• Select Split into Sub-Windows… and the following dialog is displayed:

The Split into Sub-Windows dialog is used to divide an active ECU Window into sub-windows. Each sub-
window will display a cropped portion of the image that was shown in the original window. The sub-windows
will all be the same size and will occupy the same total screen size and position as the window that is being
split.
Once a window has been split, the sub-windows will replace the original window and the split operation can-
not be undone.
Cropping restrictions may result in pixel loss for certain input resolutions and split topologies.
The Split into Sub-Windows dialog box has the following groups:
Sub-Window
Topology
The Sub-Windows Topology group allows you to select the number

of sub-windows that will be created when the window is split. The
number of sub-windows must be between two and sixteen inclusive.
However, the maximum number of split-windows may be limited by
the size of the window being split. The minimum sub-window size is
160x120 pixels. Therefore, in order to split a window into sixteen sub-
windows, the size of the window being split must be at least 640x480
pixels. Use the Horizontal and Vertical windows spin boxes to select
the desired sub-window topology.

The Split Windows group allows you to select the caption names and
preset filenames for the sub-windows. The preset filenames are used
to save each sub-window as an individual template called a preset.
These presets can subsequently be used in Display Control to create
an instance of the sub-window.
Window Num- The Window Number drop down list allows you to select a specific
ber sub-window. The Caption and Preset filename edit boxes may then
be used to set the desired caption and filename for the respective
sub-window. When All is selected, any changes to the Caption and
Preset filename edit boxes will be applied to all of the sub-windows.
Caption The Caption edit box is used to change the name in the title bar of
the selected ECU sub-window(s).
Preset filename The Preset filename edit box allows you to select the filename (with-
out suffix) that will be used to save the preset for the specific sub-
window selected in Window number. The preset filenames must be
unique with respect to each other. If the input variable is inserted into
the Preset filename for a specific sub-window, it will be substituted
with the name of the input itself before the preset is saved.
The Preset filename edit box will only be enabled if the  Save as
preset-windows checkbox is selected.
Split Window
Options
The Split Window Options allow you to select whether existing ECU
Windows are closed or saved as presets when the window has been
split.
Close existing If selected, other displayed ECU Windows from the same input will
input windows automatically close when the window is split. ECU Windows from
other inputs are not affected.
By default,  Close existing input windows is not selected.
Save as preset- If selected, then the sub-windows will be saved as Display Control
windows preset files when the window is split.
By default,  Save as preset-window is selected.
Once all options have been selected, click OK to split into sub-
windows.
Preview The preview frame displays an image showing how the window will
look after it is split into sub-windows.
6.9.5.6 Save As Preset Window

Once a window has been configured, and the window properties and cropping have been set, the window
can be saved as a preset. The presets are saved with a .WCP file extension in a folder called Preset Windows
inside the directory where Display Control server was installed.
To save an ECU Window as a preset, select a displayed ECU Window, and then select Save as Preset from
the Window menu (Adapting the Window menu options).
Alternatively, right click on the ECU window and select Save as Preset.
6.9.5.7 Restore
This option restores the current window. This option is only available when the window is minimized or max-
imized.

Selecting this option minimizes the selected window and an icon representing the minimized window is dis-
played in the bottom left corner of the representation.
6.9.5.11 Maximise
Selecting this option maximizes the window across the desktop of the target machine.

• Select Display Control… from the Configure menu. The following dialog box is displayed:
Display Control Always on top This option, if selected forces the Display Control application

Save Layout Select  Show dialog to show the Save Layout dialog in the
Dialog application. Select  Always save layout and layout changes will
automatically be saved. When  Never save layout is selected,
layout changes will never be saved.

Disconnect Dialog When  Show dialog is selected, the Disconnect dialog is dis-
played in the application. When  Always close windows is se-
lected, windows will be closed automatically. When  Never
close windows is selected, windows will never be closed auto-
matically.
Display of Video/ The Display Control application can be configured to display a
Data Wall capture of the desktop within the application window.
Wire frame Select  Wire frame to display a wire frame representation in the
Display Control application window.
Capture desk- Select  Capture desktop and the desktop is displayed in the
top Display Control application window. The captured desktop is
refreshed approximately every second. Capturing the desktop
will use up more system resources than the wire frame display.
Show gaps  Show gaps enables to display any desktop gaps you have cre-
ated on the captured desktop. This function is only available
when  Capture desktop is selected.
Display of Control A non-Barco graphics card such as an on board graphics adapter
Screen can be used as a control screen for the Display Control applica-
tion. If this method is used, a representation of the control
screen is displayed in the Display Control application.
Display of Control Screen enables you to configure how the
control screen is displayed in the Display Control application
window.
Don’t show Select  Don’t show and the control screen representation is
removed from the Display Control application window.
Wire frame Select  Wire frame to display a wire frame representation in the
Display Control application window.
Capture desk- Select  Capture desktop and the desktop of the control screen
top is captured and displayed in the in the Display Control applica-
tion window.
Alerts - Wire If it is not possible to display an ECU input, the area where the
Frame Only window is displayed in Display Control can be made to flash.
The reasons why a source cannot be displayed fall into two cat-
egories: no signal and error.
If NO SIGNAL is detected, the source has been disconnected or
switched off.
If an ERROR has occurred, one of the following has happened:
 The signal is beyond the capabilities of the hardware.
 There are no hardware resources available to display the
signal.
 An error has occurred within the system.
You can switch the flashing of the windows on or off and change
the text that appears when the input cannot be displayed.
Language Select Use the dropdown arrow to select the required display language.

6.9.7.2 Screen Order

Select Screen Order from the Configure menu and the following dialog is displayed:
The Screen Order dialogue is used to configure the order in which screens appear on the desktop. This al-
lows the screen order to be changed without physically swapping any of the output cables between graphics
cards.
The top grid (green numbers) is a representation of the current screen order. The bottom grid (black num-
bers) shows the selectable output channels.
The Screen Order dialogue can be resized from the borders; this is particularly useful
on systems with a large number of screens.
To configure the Screen Order:

• Click the Identify button. Green numbers on a white background are displayed on each of the screens
on the actual video wall.
• Click the Identify button a second time and the screen numbers on the video wall are hidden.
To configure the Screen Order, the top grid in the dialogue (green numbers) needs to match the same order
as the numbers displayed on the video wall:
• Select any screen number in the bottom grid.
(The selected screen number will be highlighted with a red background. If the wrong screen number is
selected, simply select the required screen and the original selection is overwritten.)
• Select its place in the top grid.

6.9.7.3 Screen Labels

• Select Screen Labels... from the Configure menu. The following dialog is displayed:
The Screen Labels dialog enables you to display labels on each screen within the Display Control application
window.
• To label the screens, click inside the label edit box in the screen representation on the left of the Screen
Labels dialog, and enter the desired label.
Once the labels have been entered, select OK.
Visibility Once your screen labels have been created you can use the Visibility control to show or
hide the labels in the Display Control application.
Alignment Use the Alignment control to position the Screen Labels within the Display Control appli-
cation; any changes to the alignment settings will affect the position of all the labels.
Background The Screen Labels are created as black text on a white background. The Background con-
trol enables you to choose to display the white background or not.
• To display the white background select  Opaque, to remove the white background
select  Transparent.
Layering The Layering control allows you to set the labels to display behind or in front of the win-
dow representations in the Display Control application.
6.9.7.4 Server Applications

Selecting Server Applications… displays the following dialog:
The Server Application Manager shows the status of each of the server applications installed on the Display
Control server and allows them to be started, stopped, and configured.

Status The Status column indicates the status of each of the server applications.
Running Running indicates that the server application is running correctly. To stop
the server application, select the Stop button.
Stopped Stopped indicates that the server application is not running. To start the
server application, select the Start button. If the server application fails to
start, you will need to look in the application’s Event Viewer.
Error Error indicates that the server application is running but that it encountered
a problem that will prevent it from functioning correctly.
Select the Details button to see a message describing the problem. You
should correct the problem and start the server application again.
Configure…
Port Number The Port number describes the communication channel between the local
and remote machines.
A port conflict will occur if another application is using the same Port num-
ber.
Port Name The Port name describes the communication channel used when the ap-
plication and server are on the same machine.
Once the Port number or Port name has been configured, click OK to con-
tinue. The server application will need to be stopped and started again for
the changes to take effect.

6.9.7.5 ECU
When ECU… is selected the following dialog is displayed:
• Use the Configure ECU dialog to set up the labels for the ECU inputs.
Input Labels
• Select Add… to create a new label. The following dialog is displayed:
• Type the label in the Label edit box. The label can be up to 31 characters long with no leading or trailing
spaces. Only one label can be created for each input.
• Use the up/down arrows to select an ECU input.
• Select OK and the label will be added to the list of Input Labels in the Configure ECU dialog box.
The label will also be displayed in the list of available ECU sources on the Input Settings sheet.
Window Text
Use the Window Text controls to amend the text display in an ECU window when No Signal or Invalid Signal
is detected on the input.
EDID
Use the EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) controls to edit the preferred modes of the EDID con-
tained on the ECU input. An EDID is a data structure provided by the ECU capture card to describe its capabil-
ities to a video source (e.g. graphics card or set-top box).
Inputs that contain only a configurable EDID appear on the input dropdown list.
For example, standard definition EDIDs are not configurable.
After selecting the appropriate input, use any of the following options:

Configure… button
Select the button Configure… to display the following Preferred Timings dialog for ECU inputs capable of
advertising an EDID:
The Preferred Timings dialog displays the resolution of the current mode for reference and allows the tim-
ings of the EDID preferred mode 1 and 2 to be edited. The dialog supports standard timing formulae such as:
VESA, CVT, CVT Reduced Blanking, SMPTE (for HD modes), VESA, GTF, and Custom. Selecting Auto from the
dropdown list will typically default to the VESA CVT algorithm which best matches typical standard VESA out-
put modes. However, to minimize dot clocks and hence maximize DVI cable lengths, the CVT Reduced
Blanking is recommended.
Selecting Custom from the dropdown list allows the timing parameters to be edited.
You will need to select between definition of Pixel Clock or Vertical Refresh since these
are mutually exclusive parameters.
Once edited, clicking OK writes the preferred mode into the input EDID but may not normally affect the input
mode that is being captured. It may be necessary to force the graphics device in the host machine to detect
the new modes. This can be done by selecting the button Detect on the display device’s Screen Resolution
dialog or rebooting the display device.
Reset button
Use the Reset button to restore the default EDID supplied when the card was purchased.

Import… button
Use the Import… button to import only the preferred timings from an existing EDID binary file.
Only the first two preferred blocks in the EDID will be imported.
Export… button
Use the Export… button to export the complete EDID binary file advertised on the ECU input.
6.9.7.6 Remote Command Line

The Remote Command Line dialog allows you to monitor and control the remote command line interface
server components in Display Control.
The remote server components operate independently from the Display Control application itself. Once you
have configured and enabled the active server using the Remote Command Line dialog, then it will continue
to monitor and execute commands after Display Control is closed. Once enabled, the active server will au-
tomatically start each time the machine is booted.
Select Remote Command Line… from the Configure menu. The following dialog is displayed:
Status
The control indicates the current status of the active server. While the Enabled checkbox is unchecked, then
the status will show Disconnected. When checked, the status will indicate a message that is specific to the
selected active server.
Status messages for COM Port Line Interpreter
When connected, the COM Port Line Interpreter displays the status Connected. Any other status message
will indicate a connection error.
Status messages for Telnet Command Line Interpreter
When enabled, the status will display Waiting for connections. Once a client has connected, then the status
will initially change to Waiting for client authorization. The status Client authorized will be shown once
either the client has sent the correct password or if no password is configured.

Monitor
The Monitor control displays each character as it is received by the active server. Each complete command is
shown on a separate line. If a command failed to execute, then an appropriate error message is displayed on
the line below. The Monitor control also shows any server specific status and error messages as commands
are received and processed.
 Enabled
This checkbox will allow you to enable or disable the currently selected active server. Any changes made will
take effect when either the OK or Apply buttons are selected.
Active Server
The Active Server dropdown list shows the currently selected remote server. Only one of the servers in this
list can be active at a time. When the active server is changed, then the new server is initially set to the disa-
bled state.
The two servers that can be selected are the COM Port Command Line Interpreter and the Telnet Command
Line Interpreter, which are described below.
COM Port Command Line Interpreter

The COM Port Command Line Interpreter server monitors a serial port connection in order to receive and
execute commands sent from a remote device (e.g. a Crestron/AMX controller). The transmitted characters
sent over the serial connection are cached into a buffer until the carriage return or line feed character is re-
ceived. At this point, the current command in the buffer is executed. The configuration details for the serial
connection can be modified using the Settings… button once the COM Port Command Line Interpreter has
been selected as the active server.
Telnet Command Line Interpreter

The Telnet Command Line Interpreter monitors a network port for connections made using the Telnet pro-
tocol. The server allows remote clients to transmit strings of characters that will be buffered and executed as
a command on the server machine. The current command is executed when the client sends a carriage re-
turn character followed by a line feed character. The Telnet Command Line Interpreter server only accepts
connections from a single client at a time. The configuration details for the Telnet connection can be modi-
fied using the Settings… button once the Telnet Command Line Interpreter has been selected as the active
server.
Button Settings…
The Settings… button opens the settings dialog for the currently selected active server. If any changes are
made to the settings, the active server will be restarted when the OK button is pressed. If the Cancel button is
pressed, no changes will be made to the settings.

The COM Port Command Line Interpreter settings dialog allows you to configure the serial port connection
in order to match the configuration of the device with which you are communicating.
The Port control allows you to select the serial port that is to be used for the serial con-
Port nection. While all possible 255 ports are listed, not all of these ports may be installed or
available on the machine (cf. section Ports used by Display Control Software).
The Baud Rate control allows you to select the maximum rate at which the data is

transmitted through the serial port connection (in bits per second).
The Data Bits control allows you to specify the number of bits in each character that is

transmitted and received. It is recommended that this should be set to the value 8.
The Stop Bits control allows you to specify the number of bits in each character that
Stop Bits will be used by the receiving device to detect the end of a character and to resynchro-
nize the stream. It is recommended to set this value to 1.
The Parity control allows you to change the type of error checking that is used. It is

recommended that this value is set to None.
The three Flow Control check boxes  DTR/DSR,  RTS/CTS, and  XON/XOFF are
Flow Control used to change how the flow of data is controlled. It is recommended that only the
 XON/XOFF checkbox is enabled.
This control allows the value returned by the operating system when an executable is

launched to be written back to the serial port when the process terminates. This value is

Telnet Command Line Interpreter settings dialog
The Telnet Command Line Interpreter settings dialog allows you to configure the network port and configu-
ration settings for the server.
Port
The Port control allows the network port that the Telnet Command Line Interpreter server listens on to be
changed. It is recommended that care should be taken to ensure that the selected port does not clash with a
port used by another program on the system. The default port is 23.
Password
The Password control allows a password of up to 23 characters to be set. This password must be sent by a
client to authorize the connection before any commands can be executed. The client must send the pass-

word to the server as a string in the same manner as a normal command. A carriage return character fol-
lowed by a line feed character is sent to mark the end of the password. If a client does not send the correct
password within 10 attempts, the Telnet Command Line Interpreter is automatically disabled. When the
 Hide checkbox is enabled, all password characters are substituted with an asterisk (* character).
Options
If the  Echo checkbox is enabled, each character sent by a client will be transmitted back to the client after
it is received by the server. If the character is sent during password authentication, it will be substituted for an
asterisk (*) character.
If the  Acknowledge checkbox is enabled, the server will send a carriage return character followed by a line
feed character back to the client after each command has been executed. This allows clients to transmit
commands and then wait for the acknowledgement before closing the Telnet connection. This is especially
useful for clients that only send single commands at a time.
6.9.7.7 Application
Select Application… from the Configure menu. The following dialog is displayed:
Application group
The Application group displays a list of all supported applications, including those that may not be installed
on this system. This list contains both supported applications that are preinstalled with Display Control and
also custom applications that may have been added by the user.
Checkbox
The checkbox for each application indicates if the application and its associated inputs are available in the
Display Control toolbar. Only applications detected on the system are enabled.

Applications
The Application name field shows the name of the application in question. If required, the user can change
the name by double clicking on the name. If a blank name is entered, the application name will be restored
back to its default value.
Path
The application pathname displays the full path to the executable file associated with the application. The
path is editable by double clicking on it. If an empty string is entered into the application pathname, it is re-
stored to its default value. If an executable file is entered that does not match the application, the application
is disabled.
Command line switches
The Command Line Switches field shows any command line arguments, excluding any input file/URL that is
required to launch the application. These switches can be edited by the user.
Add button
The Add button allows a new custom application to be added to Display Control. Select the Add button and
the Add Application dialog is displayed. Enter a unique application name and a valid path to add the new ap-
plication to the system.
Custom applications have restricted functionality and in some cases may exhibit
compatibility issues with Display Control.
Modify button
The settings for an application can be accessed by selecting the Modify button. This displays the Modify Ap-
plications dialog in which the name, path, and switches can be changed in order to override any default val-
ues for the application. These values can also be restored back to their default values by pressing the Default
button. Only preinstalled supported applications can be restored to their default values. For any applications
that have been added by the user, the Default button will be disabled.
Remove button
The Remove button allows a custom application to be removed from the list. Only custom applications cre-
ated using the Add button can be removed. The Remove button is disabled if a non-custom application is
selected.
Inputs group
The lower pane of the Configure Application dialog lists the inputs that have been configured for the selected
application.
Name
The name field shows the user defined name for the application input.
Path
The path field shows the user defined path for the application input. This may consist of either a file path or a
URL depending on the application. This path string will be appended to the string from the application’s
Command Line Switches field (if set) when the input is opened from the Display Control toolbar. The path
string will also be used when an input is changed for the application window that is already open (without the
Command Line Switches string). It is therefore important that the path string does not contain any command
line switches (e.g. –Input=). If switches are required, these should be entered separately into the Command
Line Switches field described above.

Add button
The Add button allows a new input to be added for the application that is currently selected. When the Add
button is selected, the Add Input dialog is displayed. A unique input name and valid pathname must be en-
tered in order to add a new input to the system.
Modify button
The settings for an input can be accessed by selecting the Modify button. This displays the Modify Input dia-
log in which the name and path can be changed.
Remove button
The Remove button allows a selected input to be removed from the list
6.9.8 Help menu (Information about Display Control)

The Help menu provides information about how Display Control works and how to use the application.
Contents… Selecting Contents opens the online help files, displaying a contents tree containing all the
help topics associated with the Display Control application.
About… Selecting the About… option will display a dialog containing details of the version number
of the Display Control application.
6.9.9 ECU Window menu descriptions
Overview of File menu options

When the ECU Window is set up with menu bar, it will show the menu items File, Window, and Help.
The identical menu options are shown in a window on right-clicking inside the ECU Window.
This section only covers the File menu options; the other menu items are described in the paragraphs above
in this Manual.

6.9.9.1 ECU Window – File menu – Save Image As…

Select Save Image As… to save the frame displayed in the application window in one of the following for-
mats:

 .jpeg

The image is cropped using the values specified in the Input Settings dialog - but it is not scaled.
• Select Save Image As… The following dialog is displayed (The pixel format is the format specified in the
Windows Properties dialog):

6.9.9.2 ECU Window – File menu – Pause/Run

• Select Pause to freeze the input source and displays the latest captured frame.
When Pause is selected from the File menu, the ECU Window application discards the current frame being
captured, saves the next frame to the computer's memory, and no longer continues to capture the source.
The frame that has been captured and stored to memory is then displayed in the ECU application window.
• To resume displaying the source, select File | Run and the source is once again displayed.
6.9.9.3 ECU Window – File menu – Save as Preset Window

• Select Save As Preset Window to save a particular window as a preset. All saved preset windows are listed
in the Display Control application toolbar.
• Select Save As Preset Window. The following dialog is displayed:

Preset Filename
The Preset Filename edit box allows to select the filename (without suffix) to be used to save the selected
ECU Window as a preset. Display Control uses the filename when listing the preset in the application toolbar
and in the preset option in the New menu.
The Preset Filename edit box will only be enabled if the  Save as preset windows checkbox
is selected.
6.9.9.4 ECU Window – File menu – Print

Selecting Print from the File menu displays the following print dialog box:
• Use the print dialog box to choose the printer settings and click OK.
The captured frame will then be printed.
As only one frame has been captured, the only option available in the Print Range Group

The Health Monitor application monitors the temperatures and voltages of the CPU cores, graphics cards,
and the computer, and protects ECU-xxx from over-temperature and overvoltage. Should an overheating or
voltage surge be imminent within the system, the application will alert the user by means of a configurable
alarm. If the alarm situation is not resolved in time, ECU-xxx will perform an auto-shutdown.
The Health Monitor application is pre-installed on your system. The application icon is located in the system
tray on the taskbar.
7.1 Introduction
When running, the Health Monitor application can continuously display a transparent floating icon which
may be placed anywhere on the desktop by clicking the top of the icon and dragging it to the preferred posi-
tion.
Healthy condition Alarm condition (background blinking)
Health Monitor will use the new position as default next time the application is run.
To open the Health Monitor application, click the center of the floating icon.
To view the Health Monitor menu, right click the Health Monitor icon in the System Tray:

7.2 CPU cores

The CPU Cores tab displays the current temperature of all CPU cores in the system. If your system has a dual
core CPU, two temperature monitors will be displayed. With a quad core processor installed, four tempera-
ture monitors will be displayed as shown in the dialog below:
Temperatures are displayed in degrees Celsius by default. However, this can be switched to degrees Fahren-
heit by selecting the radio button  Fahrenheit.
Temperature ranges are graded as follows:
Green Normal operating temperature
Amber This is an indication that a particular CPU's temperatures are rising beyond normal operating con-
ditions, and, if configured, an alarm will be triggered. You can set the Amber threshold by right
clicking on the amber section of the core monitor. The following dialog is displayed:

To set a high threshold, enter a value between 68 and 80 for degrees Celsius, or 154 and 176 for degrees
Fahrenheit, depending on the temperature scale selected.
Red If the temperature reaches the Red threshold, the system will shut down immediately.
The temperature monitor markers indicate a scale of operation by displaying a yellow line covering a mini-
mum and maximum operating range:
The exact current temperature of the individual CPU cores is displayed to the right of each core temperature
monitor.
7.3 Graphics cards

The Graphics Cards tab displays the current temperatures of the active graphics card GPUs in the system.
Use the scroll bar to monitor all active graphics card GPUs.
The ECU-4DPOUT graphics cards have two GPUs, where each GPU serves two output channels. Only the
active GPUs are monitored by the Health Monitor application. Therefore, the GPUs not connected to a mon-
itor are not displayed.
Use the scroll bar to view all graphics card GPUs.
Temperatures are displayed in degrees Celsius by default. However, this can be changed to degrees Fahren-

Amber This is an indication that a particular GPU's temperature is rising outside normal operating condi-
tions and if configured, an alarm will activate. The Amber threshold can be adjusted by the user by

The exact current temperatures of the graphics card GPUs are displayed to the right of each GPU tempera-
ture scale.
7.4 Computer
The SBC installed in the system has temperature and voltage sensors, which enable the Health Monitor ap-
plication to monitor and display any increase or decrease in temperatures or surges in voltage.
The temperature monitor measures the overall temperature of the SBC provided by the SBC sensor.
The voltage monitor measures fluctuations in voltage on the SBC. Unlike the temperature monitor, the volt-
age monitor has a low and high threshold; therefore both a severe decrease and a severe increase in voltage
will trigger an alarm.

Temperature and voltage ranges are graded as follows:
Amber This is an indication that the temperatures and/or voltages have exceeded the normal operating
thresholds, and, if configured, an alarm will be triggered. You can set the Amber threshold by right-
clicking on the amber section of the temperature and voltage monitor. The following dialog is dis-
played:
To change the voltage threshold, enter a value between the values specified. Each set of values will be differ-
ent for each voltage monitor. High and low voltage thresholds can be adjusted.

7.5 Back Planes

The back plane installed in the system has temperature sensors on the left, center, and the right, which ena-
ble the Health Monitor application to monitor and display any increase or decrease in temperatures.

7.6 Alarms
Health Monitor allows you to configure three different types of alarms, to warn the user of an impending
problem.
Possible alarm types are Send Email, Onscreen and System Buzzer. Note that System
Buzzer in this context refers to the audio Line-Out of the SBC. A speaker or headset is not
part of the delivery.
Any combination of the three alerts can be selected by activating the relevant checkboxes. Once the type(s)
of alert has been selected, select the relevant Configure button and configure the alert process to suit your
requirements. Alarms can be selected and deselected anytime by clicking in the  Active checkbox.
7.6.1 System Buzzer alert configuration

The computer has a built in buzzer alarm that can be configured to act as an alert for the Health Monitor
applications. Use the System Buzzer Alert Configuration dialog box to configure a System Buzzer alarm.
Seconds to buzz Use the Seconds to buzz slider to determine the period of time you would
like the buzzer to be audible, up to a maximum of five seconds.

Seconds of silence Use the Seconds of silence slider to determine the interval between the au-
dible buzzer, up to a maximum of five seconds.
Frequency (Hertz) Use the Frequency slider to determine the frequency of the audible alarm.
• Once configured, it is recommended that the System Buzzer alarm be tested to determine its suitability.
To test the buzzer alarm, select the button Test.
• When all settings have been configured and the alarm has been tested, click OK to save the settings and
return to the Alarms tab.
On some systems speaker sounds are directed through the on board audio device, in
which case you will be required to connect to an external speaker via the line out on the
motherboard.
7.6.2 Send Email alert configuration

If you are not in the vicinity of your system, the On Screen alert will not be of any benefit. Health Monitor
allows you to configure email alerts that can be forwarded to you in the event of a problem. To configure the
Send Email alert, you must ensure the system has access to a mail account server.
Title Use the Title edit box to insert a default title to the email alert.
Email Recipients Use the Email Recipients edit box to insert the email address of all those you
wish to receive an alert via email. Up to a maximum of twenty email address-
es are permitted.
Content Use the Content group field to configure what information you wish to be
displayed in your email.
 Red Only
Select Red Only and the email will contain information on which elements
have entered the red threshold and caused the system to shut down.
 Red And Amber
Select Red and Amber and the email will contain information on which ele-
ments have entered the Amber and Red thresholds.

 Full
Select Full and the email will contain information on all elements, including
those that have not entered a critical threshold.
Formatting Use the Formatting group field to select either  Plain Text or  HTML text
in your email alert.

7.6.3 On Screen alarm configuration
If an on screen alarm is preferred, this can be configured using the On Screen Alarm Configuration dialog.
There are three types of on screen alarms available, which can be configured and used in any combination.
7.6.3.1 Alarm type Flash Window

Select Flash Window to configure a visual on-screen alarm. In the event of an alarm being triggered by the
Health Monitor application, an icon will appear on the desktop taskbar, and begin to flash in amber color. At
the same time, if displayed on the desktop, the floating icon will also flash in amber. Should the taskbar be
hidden, the taskbar icon will not be visible. Therefore, we recommend refraining from using this type of on
screen alarm if the taskbar is to remain hidden from the desktop, and the floating icon not displayed on the
video wall.
7.6.3.2 Alarm type On Screen Text Alarm

Select On Screen Text Alarm to configure a visual on-screen alarm. On selection of the On Screen Text
Alarm, the On Screen Alarm Text edit box is enabled. Enter the text you require to notify that an alarm has
been issued by the Health Monitor application.
 Flash the text Selecting  Flash the text will configure the on screen alarm to flash from red to
white, indicating that a problem has occurred. The font of the text is default and

cannot be changed. However, the on screen display can be resized to suit your
requirements. Once the on screen alarm has been resized and positioned, the
setting will remain its default until it is again resized or repositioned.
 Transparent Win- Selecting  Transparent Window will configure the on screen text alarm to be
dow displayed in a transparent window on your desktop, thereby not totally obscuring
any active window.

7.6.3.3 Alarm type Open Report HTML Page

Selecting Open Report HTML Page will configure the on screen alarm to display a table in HTML format on
the desktop, detailing the current status of the system at the time of Health Monitor issuing the alarm. An

8.1 Display Control - Command line interface

The Display Control command line interface allows you to open layout files. The command line interface
can be accessed in a number of ways:
 From a shortcut specifying wallctl.exe as the target, followed by the command line options separated by
spaces.
 From a command prompt by specifying the full path of wallctl.exe or by having the folder where Display
Control was installed on the path.
 From a batch file. The same rules as command prompt apply.
8.1.1 Example Usage

• Open the layout file C:\layouts\layout.lay", and exit without showing the Display Control applica-
tion window.

8.1.4 Networking Options

To control a machine other than the one you are working on, you will need some of the following options:
-Machine={machine name|IP address} This option specifies the machine to connect to.
If the machine name contains spaces, then enclose the
name in quotes, for example: -machine="My Computer"

Any part of the OSD that falls outside the margins is not

-OSDTextWrap={On|Off} When text wrapping is switched on, if the text does not fit
between the left and right margins, spaces between words
are replaced with line breaks to produce shorter lines.
When text wrapping is switched off, the text is displayed
with the same spaces and line breaks as it has been en-
tered.
-OSDHorizontalAlignment={Left|Centre|Right} If you specify Left, the left edge of the OSD will be posi-
tioned against the left margin and each of the individual

9.1 Online help

In the Help menu of the Display Control application, an online help system can be consulted.
9.2 Troubleshooting
9.2.1 Product malfunction
Should you detect a malfunction of the technical product, immediately disconnect the power cord and con-
tact the Barco support (cf. section Contact).
9.2.2 ECU-200: Optional Windows® update for RAID controller must not be installed
®
After installation, several Windows updates are available—some important and some optional hardware relat-
ed. Do NOT install any optional update for the RAID controller, otherwise you will run into endless reboot!
In general, never update any drivers – if so, only use the versions stored on the User Guide & Tools DVD (ver-
sions are also mentioned in the Release Notes).
9.2.3 RPC Server unavailable

This message means that the attempt to connect to the server failed.
 If you are connecting to My Computer:
• Is the server application running?
• Did an error occur that prevented the server application from starting the RPC server?
• Are you using the correct port name?
 If you are connecting across a network:

• Has the Display Control server been activated? When Display Control is installed on the server, a serial
number must be entered to enable the networking features.

• If the server is running Windows XP Service Pack 2, is the firewall blocking the port for the server
®
component? See Windows XP Service Pack 2.
• Is the Display Control server configured for network access? Security Policy
• Is the server application running?
• Did an error occur that prevented the server application from starting the RPC server?

 Are you using the correct port?

If a connection is possible with the Display Control application, either remotely or locally, you can use the
Server Application Manager dialog to find out if the server application has been installed, is running, which
port and port name it is using, and if an error occurred. In the Display Control application, go to the
Configure menu, and select Server Applications (cf. section Server Applications).
If it is not possible to connect with the Display Control application, you will need to look at the application
event viewer on the Display Control server.
9.2.4 The endpoint is a duplicate

This error message suggests that an attempt to open a communication port failed because it is already in use.
If the Display Control server has not been activated or the networking has been disabled in the Display
Control Administrator dialog, or Display Control has not been activated, the problem is with the port name.
If networking is enabled, the problem could be with either the port number or the port name.
You can find the port number and the port name used by the server application through the Server
Application Manager dialog, or the application event viewer.
To find out which port numbers are in use on a machine, use the netstat command. There is no way to find
out which port names are in use.
Use the Server Application Manager to change the port number and/or port name, and restart the server
application.
9.2.5 The remote procedure call failed and did not execute
This is displayed when trying to contact a server application that has been stopped after it had been connect-
ed to successfully. Go to the Server Application Manager dialog and start the server application again.
9.2.6 Changing screen resolution

Prior to making any changes to the resolution, it is recommended that the ECU server be stopped before-
hand. This can be done using the Server Application Manager dialog.
The servers retain resources on the graphics card, which may not be available if the resolution is changed.
9.2.7 The display remains dark

• Check if the projection modules/monitors are switched on.
• Check the cabling.
• Check if the controller is up and running (check the LEDs on the front panel).
• Shut down the controller and reboot. When the controller reboots, hit DEL to enter the BIOS.
• Check and make sure that the onboard VGA is enabled.
• Watch the boot messages for possible errors.
9.2.8 Performance problem when displaying dozens of videos

Make sure that no AERO theme is selected; cf. paragraph Aero Themes.
9.2.9 ECU-110: ECU-4HDPOUT not supported in 1st slot of 9-slot PCI Express backplane
Make sure not to insert the graphics card in the slot closest to the SBC! Such configuration is not supported
and may cause errors (such as the PCI Express link being dropped). The slot closest to the SBC is usually used
for the H-Link card in multi chassis solutions, and when only a single chassis is used, we recommend using
this slot for a capture card or other third party cards such as network, etc.
9.2.10 Windows® 7 localization

Localization is in the responsibility of the customer, and is not part of the delivery volume.

You can change the display language of Windows on the Control Panel | Region and Language on the
Keyboards and Languages tab. Some display languages are installed by default, while others require installing
additional language files via Internet connection.
Language packs are available in Windows 7 Ultimate through Windows Update as optional updates. They are
not installed automatically.
9.3 Event Viewer

Each of the server applications writes to the event log when one of the following events occurs:
 The server application is starting.
 The communications ports are opened.
 An error occurs. The message includes a description of the error.
 The server application is stopping.
To open the Event Viewer, navigate to Start | Control Panel | Administrative Tools, and double click the
Event Viewer shortcut. The maximized Event Viewer is displayed.

9.4 Networking
If you intend to allow access to your Display Control server across a network, proceed as follows:
9.4.1 Decide the security policy

In order for a user to connect to a Display Control server, the server must be listening on at least one port.
These ports have a potential vulnerability. If your server is working in a secure environment, you probably
need not worry about unauthorized access to the ports. If your Display Control server is on a network that is
generally accessible, you will probably want to restrict access to the ports.
By default, Display Control will require that users who connect to a port on the Display Control server pro-
vide a user name and a password. The user name and password must correspond to an account on the
Display Control server, or, if the Display Control server is participating in a domain, an account on the do-
main.
9.4.2 Ports used by Display Control Software

Display Control will use the port numbers listed below in v7.1.
The only port number that is fixed is for the component WCTLSVC. All other components default to the ports
listed, but may use different ports if their listed port is already in use. The list is broken down into three parts
showing the component name and port number. The first part shows the components that will always be
active, while the second shows the components that are active only while the offline layout editor is in use. If
you are only concerned with ports usage in versions 6.9.0 - 6.11.2 then you may exclude the additional com-
ponents in the second part of the list.
The third part of this list shows the default port for the Telnet command line interpreter, which is a compo-
nent of Display Control's 'Remote Command Line Interpreter'. This component is disabled by default and has
a user configurable port.
Ports always opened by Display Control:

 WCTLSVC – 1044 – the only fixed port number
 DCTLSVR - 1043
 RGBXSVR - 1051
 APPSVR - 1053
Additional ports opened by Display Control while the offline layout editor is in use:
 DCTLSVR-offline - 1042
 APPSVR-offline - 1056
 RGBXSVR-offline - 1054
Additional port used by Display Control when the Telnet command line interpreter is ac-
tive:

9.4.3 Configure security level in Display Control

• To access the Display Control administrator dialog, navigate to:
Start | All Programs | Display Control | Display Control Administrator
To use the administrative dialog, you must be a member of the Administrator Group.

Use the dialog to select the level of security you require. If, as stated above, your Display Control server is
working in a secure environment, then you may wish to allow network connections without the need to au-
thenticate.
If the Display Control server is on a generally accessible network, then you may wish to select the  Use
Windows user accounts to authenticate connections option.
• Once network access has been determined, click OK and reboot for the changes to be applied.
To use the administrative dialog, you must be a member of the Administrator Group.
9.4.4 Configure your operating system (Windows® 7)

If the Display Control server is not participating in a domain, you will need to change the inbound rules.
Prior to carrying out this procedure, ensure that a network cable is plugged in to your machine.
• Open the Control Panel and select Windows Firewall.

The following dialog is displayed:
• Select Advanced settings to open the Advanced Settings dialog.

• Select Inbound Rules to open the Inbound Rules dialog:
• Locate all Display Control settings and ensure each one is active (has a green icon). The Profile should =
Domain, Enabled should = Yes and Action should = Allow.
• To unblock or allow a broken connection, double click on the specific inbound rule to open the
Properties dialog, and, on the General tab, select  Allow the connection.
• Select Apply as shown in the following dialog:
• Once all the inbound rules have been established, ensure the network cable is plugged into your machine
and then reinstall Display Control.

9.5 Managing the RAID

The RAID status is monitored by the Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (IRST), which is installed by default.
Upon HDD failure, a notification pops up in the task bar and the hard drives icon will remain “blinking”.
ECU-110 has NO LEDs on the hard drives!

With ECU-200, The left disk bay normally is Port 0, the right disk is Port 1.
With ECU-110, The upper disk bay normally is Port 2, the lower disk is Port 3.
The port numbers 0 and 1, or 2 and 3, resp. refer to the SATA ports on the SBC. In case of
doubt, we recommend verifying the SATA cable connection between the disk device and
the SATA ports 0 … 3 on the SBC board. This can also be done by comparing the serial
number printed on the hard disk drive with the serial number reported in the configuration
utility or the IRST application. If two disks with different data are present in the system, the
system will always boot from the disk connected to Port 0 (ECU-200 with SBC4) or Port 2
(ECU-110 with SBC2).
9.5.1 Rebuilding an array in case an array member disk is reported missing or failed status
The icon of the IRST application in the system tray will show a caution sign:
• Open the application and check the status. In this example the disk on port 1 is reported missing.

• Insert a blank new disk.

• Open the IRST application and click the Refresh button.
• Select Rebuild to another disk from the Status menu.
• In the Rebuild Volume dialog box, select the new disk and click Rebuild button.

The rebuilding process is started and will take several hours. You can continue working as usual during the
rebuilding period. When the rebuild is completed, IRST will display a dialog showing normal status. The de-
graded volume has been deleted.
Further, the icon in the system tray will change and display Normal status.
IRST provides more features to manage the RAID array, such as connecting a disk, adding a disk to an array,
etc. Please consult the Online Help for further information.

9.6 Diagnostics tool (DiagTool)

DiagTool collects system information from ECU-xxx in case the user experiences problems. The data gath-
ered can be sent to the Helpdesk in .zip format.
It is not necessary to install this tool. It can be run on demand.
The tool can be found at C:\Program Files (x86)\Display Control\diagtoolV1.x.x.zip.
• Extract the diagtoolV1.x.x.zip file and run DIAGTOOL.exe.
• Confirm the User Account Control dialog box.

9.7 Redundant power supply failure

Continuous beeping and the power LED on the front lit in red indicates a failure of the redundant power sup-
ply.
To disable the beep tone, press the reset button on the front of ECU-xxx (cf. hardware user manuals which
can be found in the Repository\Documentation directory on the USB stick delivered with your system, the
hard disk of your display controller, or downloaded from the secured Barco website
www.barco.com/mybarco).
To exchange the defective power supply, proceed as follows:
• Switch off the power supply module and disconnect the power cord.
• Undo the screw.
• Pull out the power supply module.
• Insert the new power supply module.
• Reconnect the power cord.
• Switch on the power supply module.

9.8 Driver installation

This section will guide you through the installation of the Barco Windows drivers for the compatible cards.
Follow the instructions described in the installation wizard below.
The driver installation file can be found in the Repository | Barco Driver Install vx.x.x directory on the local
disk and the USB stick delivered with your system.
• Copy the driver file to an appropriate directory on the hard disk (or the desktop, if preferred).
• Run the Install.exe file.
The wizard installs drivers for the graphic cards that work with following operating systems:
• Follow the different steps of the Driver Installation Wizard.

• Click Next >.
• Accept the License Agreement and select Next >.
• Select the products for which you would like to install the drivers.

• Select the number of screens and how you would like them to be arranged.
• Set the resolution, refresh rate, and pixel depth you would like to use.
This dialog gives a summary of the selected options. It is not recommended to select  Force Driver Install
when simply upgrading a system with a new driver.
When reinstalling the same version of your driver, the driver files will normally not be copied. The driver instal-
lation simply changes the settings as requested.
®
If the files on the system have been corrupted and you need to force Windows to copy the files, you can
select  Force Driver Install.
If you wish to downgrade a system to an older driver, you will also have to select  Force Driver Install.
Selecting the  Force Driver Install option cannot harm the system, however, the driver
installation can take considerably longer to run. On very large systems, it may take ten
minutes.

• Check the summary and click Next to install (or click Back to make changes).
On successful installation, the following dialog window will be displayed.

• Select Finish.
• In the Windows Security prompt, select Install.
• Either acknowledge the reboot prompt to use the new drivers (otherwise the drivers will be active on the
next system start) or select No to proceed to installing/upgrading the Display Control application.

9.9 Application installation/upgrade

This section will guide you through the installation of the Barco Display Control software. Follow the instruc-
tions described in the installation wizard below.
The application installation zip file can be found in the Repository\Barco Display Control vx.x.x directory on
the local disk and on the USB stick delivered with the system.
• Copy the application file to an appropriate directory on the hard disk (or the desktop, if preferred).
• Run the Install.exe file.
• Follow the different steps of the Display Control Installation Wizard.

The wizard installs Display Control software.

Should you wish to run the Display Control application from a different machine through a
network (via an external client connection), you will have to install the Display Control appli-

• Check the summary and click Next to install (or click Back to make changes).
The installation wizard signals that the installation has been successful.
• Select the button Finish to close the Installation Wizard.

9.10 Recovery
Included in the delivery volume is a recovery medium (USB), which contains the software and configuration
of the system as delivered. It is recommended to keep this medium in a safe place in order to reset the sys-
tem to the factory settings should the situation arise.
We strongly recommend that you consider creating a new system image with each
upgrade or modification to update the recovery information.
Using the Barco recovery USB will overwrite the system and restore it to its original
factory settings. All previously saved data will be erased.
Only use this recovery medium after an error or a crash, and when nothing else is helping!
• Make sure the controller is set to boot from USB in the BIOS! To enter the BIOS, hit Del while rebooting
the controller.
• To recover the system, insert the Barco recovery medium into the port and restart the system.
• When the system has booted, first accept the End User License Agreement.
• Continue recovery or exit to backup as needed.
