PHY102A – Mechanics

2019-20-1st semester
Tutorial – 1 (01/08/2019)
Course Instructors: A. H. Kelkar / K. P. Rajeev

1. The direction cosines of a vector are the cosines of the angles it makes with the
coordinate axes. The cosine of the angles between the vector and x, y, and z
axes are usually called, in turn α, β and γ.
Prove that 𝛼 + 𝛽 + 𝛾 = 1
(Kleppner 1.3)

2. Show that if 𝐴⃗ − 𝐵⃗ = 𝐴⃗ + 𝐵⃗ , then 𝐴⃗ is perpendicular to 𝐵⃗.

(Kleppner 1.4)

3. Prove the law of sines using the cross product.

(Kleppner 1.6)

4. Let 𝑎 and 𝑏 be the unit vectors in the xy plane making angles 𝜃 and 𝜑 with the
x-axis, respectively. Show that 𝑎 = 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃𝚤̂ + 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃𝚥̂, 𝑏 = 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜑𝚤̂ + 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜑𝚥̂. Using
vector algebra prove that cos(𝜃 − 𝜑) = 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜑 + 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜑
(Kleppner 1.7)

5. An elevator ascends from the ground with uniform speed. At time T1 a boy drops
a marble through the floor. The marble falls with uniform acceleration 𝑔 =
9.8 𝑚/𝑠 , and hits the ground T2 seconds later. Find the height of the elevator
at time T1.
(Kleppner 1.13)

6. A sports car can accelerate uniformly to 120 miles/h in 30 seconds. Its

maximum breaking rate cannot exceed 0.7g. What is the minimum time
required to go 0.5 miles, assuming it begins and ends at rest?
(Kleppner 1.16)

7. A tire rolls in a straight line without slipping. Its center moves with constant
speed V. A small pebble lodged in the tread of the tire touches the road at t =
0. Find the pebble’s position velocity and acceleration as a function of time.
(Kleppner 1.19)

8. A boy stands at the peak of a hill which slopes downward uniformly at angle ∅.
At what angle 𝜃 from the horizontal should he throw a rock so that it has the
greatest range?
(Kleppner 1.21)
9. Consider a vibrating star, whose frequency 𝜈 depends on its radius R, mass
density ρ, and Newtons gravitational constant G. How does 𝜈 depend on R, ρ
and G?
(Morin 1.4)

10. How does the speed of waves on a string depend on its mass M, length L, and
tension T?
(Morin 1.11)
