Learning Objective : Synthesising atomic structure

Prerequisite : Students are able to :

a) define proton number
b) define nucleon number
c) relate the proton to the nucleon number

Duration : 40 minutes

Learning outcomes : 1. write the symbol of elements.

2. determine the numbers of neutron, protons and electrons from
the proton number and the nucleon number and vice- versa.
3. write and explain symbols for representing an element.

Induction set : 1. Distribute worksheet 1 to all students

2. Students complete worksheet 1 in 5 minutes (ignoring last column)
3. Discussion of answer to worksheet 1 on screen

1. Students are asked to refer to worksheet 1
2. Teacher introduces symbols of a few elements in worksheet 1.
