A REPORT ON ROOFING (HIP ROOF) AT TAKORADI AIRPORT

On Tuesday, the 9th of July, 2019 I went for a site visitation at Takoradi, Airport
Ridge with my colleagues and one Architect to study how roofs are made.
INTRODUCTION
Roof
A roof is a structure forming the upper covering of a building or other shelter. Its primary purpose is
generally to provide protection from the elements, but it may also contribute to safety, security, privacy,
insulation

Hip roof
A hip roof is a type of roof where all sides slope downwards to the walls, usually with a fairly gentle
slope and shaped like a pyramid. Hip roofs often have a consistent level fascia, meaning that a gutter
can be fitted all around.

Roof members
Rafters
A rafter is one of a series of sloped structural members that extend from the ridge or hip to the wall
plate, downslope perimeter or eave, and that are designed to support the roof deck and its associated
loads.

Ridge
Member often parallel to the eaves

Purlins
a horizontal beam along the length of a roof, resting on principals and supporting the common rafters or
boards.

Ceiling Hangers

Ceiling noggins
A ceiling nogging is a strut used to give rigidity to a framework, fixed between joists to their increase
strength and stiffness.

Types of connection
there may be more than one way to connect the roof system to a wall; these connections are grouped
 into the following three categories:

● direct-bearing connections;
A direct-bearing connection is used in instances where the wall below does not continue beyond the
roof level (i.e.,no parapet).

● pocket connections :
A pocket connection consists of framing the floor or roof system into a void in the masonry wall.

● ledger connections.
As with hangers, ledger connections minimize the impact on the continuity of a masonry wall.

● Hanger Connection
When it is desired to maintain the continuity of the wall for structural, aesthetic, or construction
reasons, a wall hanger can be used to suspend the roof or floor system.
