CHAPTER III

THE STUDY

This chapter provides some detailed information of the research subject instrument and analysis.

3.1 Methodology

In this research, the writer used the case study method. The method employed by the writer

through four steps, namely, identifying the errors, classifying the errors, quantifying the errors,

and analysing the source of the error (Gay, 1987). The description of the data dealt with the

students' error in using simple present tense in writing descriptive text made by the grade eight

students of Tukuran Technical Vocational High School.

The instrument of this research was a descriptive writing test given to the students. The writing

test was intended to gather information about the students' errors when using simple present tense

in writing descriptive text, and to measure the students' writing ability in order to obtain empirical

data.This study addresses the purpose of knowing the simple present tense problems encountered

by the students in descriptive writing.

3.2 Research Approach Design

This study aims at investigating the problems of writing correct English sentences as for

the TTVHS students of secondary schools. The study applied the descriptive and the analytical

methods beside the statistical tools so as to achieve the desired goals. Therefore, the researchers

used both questionnaire for teachers (31teachers) and test for students (20 students), and reached

the results below: 1. Most of the TTVHS students are not acquainted with parts of speech. 2. The
periods allocated for writing skills are extremely rare. 3. Teachers, encouragement for students

concerning writing skills is entirely rare. 4. There is a complete absence in teaching lessons of

English structure. 5. Students, mistakes in writing skills are not discussed in the presence of

students. Thus the study recommended that: there should be a sort of modification in the TTVHS

syllabus through introducing a lot of periods concerning English structure besides focusing on

literature periods, for it is the main source of vocabulary.

3.3 Research Setting

The study was conducted at Tukuran Technical Vocational High School, Grade 8 students

at San , Carlos Tukuran Zamboanga del Sur.

3.4 The study Population and sample

There are 20 students got 75% in the class. The sample of this study consisted of 20 respondents

from the grade 8 students.

3.5 Data Collection

In order to determine what track is in the data suggested about the student attitudes and

perceptions toward the problem caused using the incorrect sentence structure in English language

responses of the participants analysis were analyzed descriptive calculating percentages and

average scores.
