What motivated you to apply for the Telstra Graduate Program?

Describe 3 personal
attributes or skills that you can bring to Telstra as a Graduate
I always loved application development especially mobile app which allows me create something
impactful using just a laptop.

And Telstra graduate program could fulfil my passion by providing application development
opportunities as well as exposures to various mobile technology.

And since the program is full of diverse tasks and roles, I believe can contribute to it with my 3
greatest strengths:

First of all I’m a quick learner – when I’m at ANZ bank, I learnt a range of languages such JavaScript,
CSS from scratch within a month and developed well-received solutions for my stakeholders.

Secondly I’m very persistent. I would try all possibilities to resolve bugs in my code and sometimes it
could take a whole night.

Thirdly, I’m adaptable. When I was a waiter I could switch with my colleagues to either take orders,
process payments, or cleaning depending on the situation.

Tell us something about yourself that we wouldn’t learn from reading your resume?
What are your passions, interests, hobbies?
playing the piano is another passion of mine because it is a good mindfulness training. A music
player has to be mindful and concentrate on every single note to not make a mistake. And
continuous concentration is very intense, you have to divide your music into sections to tackle or
take regular breaks. This is very similar to programming and I’ve found these techniques to be useful
as a developer as well.

One of our Telstra Values is to “Make the Complex Simple”. Provide a specific
example of when YOU have resolved a complex problem. This can be an example of a
customer interaction, a process improvement, a work task etc. We want you to break
down your response into 4 parts using the CARE method. • Context – What’s the
background of the situation? Why was it complex? • Action – What action did you
personally take? Whom did you engage/communicate? • Result – What was the
outcome/result? • Evidence – What was the impact of your actions? (E.g. feedback/%
improvement in performance/sales) It’s really important to talk about what YOU
specifically did, not what others did to resolve the issue. This is an opportunity for
you to demonstrate behaviours we’re looking for at Telstra. Please ensure that your
response is detailed and specific. Please do not provide a generic or vague response.
This is opportunity is for you to show us what you got!
When I worked as a waiter, I did something inappropriate in front of a customer which is climbing
over the reception desk to fetch a receipt. So my manager saw this and was very angry, and as soon
as the customer left he hit me with a clipboard very hard in front of other colleagues. I was
embarrassed, in shock and didn’t know what to do : do I hit back, do I make a scene in front of the
customers, do I call the police, do I wait and sue the restaurant. For the rest of the day all I could
think about were those options: if I fight back, someone might record it and it would damage my
image and future career; if I sue, the restaurant and company would have more power to hire a
better lawyer. but if I do nothing, the abuse might happen again.
After I’ve calmed down for a few days I’ve decided to have a private conversation with my manager
and It went like this “I admit what I did infront of the customer was wrong, but you cannot physically
hit me, otherwise I will fight back in defence and take all legal measures to pursue my rights”. So I
believe by having the conversation in a private, and respectful manner, I avoided to make him sound
like the “bad guy” in the situation and he will be more inclined to listen reason. By being assertive
and issuing warnings, I made him realise that he cannot trample over me and respect me as an equal
employee.

My manager agreed to the terms and since then he had been much more respectful to me and not
even once did he physically abuse me.

Describe an IT innovation that has the potential to significantly impact the

Telco/Technology Industry. Why?
Virtual reality will be the most impactful, especially to telecommunication companies.

Data speed

 The first reason is that there will be a need for faster internet. To give an example,
professional will be able to connect to each other remotely via VR meetings while
maintaining, or simulating the human interaction element unlike teleconference or skype.
So If you want to present a phone model, instead of going through slides and blueprints,
make a tangible 3D phone prototype in the VR meeting room and let your stakeholders
examine it themselves and companies can do this to save time and money. Another
example, say if you want to drive your kids to school but you don’t want to drive to school
and come back because you have work to do, and you don’t trust self-driving cars neither,
well you can remotely drive the car by looking at the roads via your vt goggle and put your
hands on an analogue or virtual steering wheel. So to ensure the efficiency, accuracy and
most importantly, the safety of these tasks, a fast and stable internet connection is
necessary, (you don’t want accident happening because of a delay between your virtual
brake and actual brake on the car) so this will become a big challenge for
telecommunication companies.

Data amount

 Also, as for entertainment, people will be able to stream VR movies and TV shows and the
images must be in very resolutions to be clear enough for VR devices. And we are talking
about 4k and even 8k. So telecom companies must also brace for this exponentially
increasing data consumptions.

So basically, VR will require faster, stabler, and more scalable connections between devices.
