This study was conducted to determine the effects of listening to different music genres on the
concentration of students when reviewing at home.

Questions:

Background of the study:

Music genre is a particular type or category of music that identifies some pieces of music. Music
genre also refers to musical style (such as jazz, salsa, rock, pop, classical, ballad hip-hop, EDM,
country, heavy metal, reggae, funk, etc.) listening to music had been part of people’s lives from
generations to generations. Music improves memory, mental development and physical
coordination of a person. Some type of music also improves the mood, intelligence, motivation,
and mostly concentration, because music affects our body consciously and unconsciously.
According to Peretti & Swerson, it can increase a person’s productivity and lessen boredom
especially when studying or reviewing.

There are reasons to believe that music can be helpful and effective in studying or reviewing.
There have been multiple studies conducted that there are positive effects on listening to
particular music genre to improve concentration when reviewing (Nicky Davis, Is it Good to
Listen to Music While Studying?) According to Beentjes, Koolstra, and Van de Voort in 1996,
listening to music is a way for students to help them stay engaged in studying and concentrated
when reviewing. Music also engages the areas of the brain linked with paying attention for the
students concentration (Stanford University). A variety of studies has investigated exactly how
music affects learning and memory, there are many factors associated on how music influences
how people concentrate and receive an information. A study conducted by Hallman, Price, and
Katsarou, (2002) found better performance on students in doing tasks with calming and relaxing
music condition when compared with a no-music condition. And they also implied that this typ
of music can provide a soothing environment that puts students at ease and have a better
concentration. According to Rauscher et. al, 1993, A popular coined term ‘The Mozart Effect’
has a beneficial effect 0n mental development, indicated that Mozart Effect may induce
improvement on the performances of a person. A research team from Stanford University of
Medicine found that that musical techniques used by composers 200 years ago help the brain
organize incoming information. It shows that listening to classical music helps increase
intellectual quotient (IQ). According to Nicky Davis there are benefits and drawbacks of
listening to music while reviewing or studying. Music that is also soothing and relaxing can help
students concentrate better while they are reviewing, because it creates a positive mood which
boosts a student’s memory formation. Background music may improve focus on a task by
providing motivation and improving mood. Students who listen to music with lyrics tends to be
less effective and having less absorbed less information and also loud and agitated music can be
distracting, making focus more difficult to a student when reviewing.
