What is hazardous energy?

 Energy sources including “electrical, mechanical,

hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, thermal, or other
sources in machines and equipment” can be hazardous to
workers.
What are the harmful effects of hazardous
energy?

 If they come in contact with uncontrolled energy the

injuries they sustain may paralyze them or worse.

 Common injuries include electrocutions, cuts,

lacerations, crushing, burning among others that heavy
machinery can cause.
Situations when the person is harmed

 A steam valve is automatically turned on burning

workers who are repairing a downstream
connection in the piping
Situations when the person is harmed

 A jammed conveyor system suddenly releases,

crushing a worker who is trying to clear the jam.
Situations when the person is harmed

 Internal wiring on a piece of factory equipment

electrically shorts, shocking worker who is repairing the
equipment.
What is Control of hazardous energy?

 Sets forth requirements to protect employees working on

electric circuits and equipment. This policy requires
workers to use safe work practices in order to prevent
the release of hazardous energy while employees perform
servicing and maintenance activities
What is a Lockout/Tagout?

 is a safety protocol used in industry and research settings

to ensure that dangerous machines are properly shut off
and not able to be started up again prior to the
completion of maintenance or repair work.
STEPS for Lockout/Tagout Program

 1. Prepare for shutdown

 2. Notify all affected employees
 3. Equipment shutdown
 4. Isolation of system from hazardous
 5. Removal of residual waste
 6. Apply Lockout/tagout devices
 7. Verify isolation by visual inspection and testing
 8. Perform Maintenance or service Activity
 9. Remove Lockout/Tagout device
GUIDELINES for LOCKOUT DEVICES

 Manufactured from durable materials

 Substantial to removal without the use of excessive force
 Information of the employee who installed the lockout device must be on the
tag and only he/she can remove the lockout device.
*Note: if there are a number of employees assigned to a machine. Each one must install his
lockout device.
 Standardized by color, shape and size
 Singularly identified. To be used only to control energy, no other
EFFECTIVE ENERGY CONTROL

 Machine-specific lockout procedures

 Inspections
 Audits
 Employee Training
