The 2R or l2R engile equipped on the Toyota Corona scries.Toyoia HiAcc. loyota
HiLux and Toyota Toyo-Ace seriesis of a four cylinderover-head
valvesquaretype
The constructionof the enginccqulppedon the eachvclicle is the same,l)ut their relaied
specfication slightly difler. Therefore. the specification ior each enginc is sepNjttely
describedin the gencralspecifrcation
The cylinderhead assemblyis composcdof the head with the valveguides, valves.dual type
valvesprings, rocker arms, shaft and supports, spark phrgs, thermostat, water outlet, ther-
mostatcaseand the intake and exhaustmanifolds
The two-balrel type carburetor is molrnted onb ihe jntlke mtnifold The carburetor
equippedon the Corona seriesis provided wiih Lheautornatic choke while thc carburctor
equippedon the Lighi-Truckis providedwith thc manualtvpe chokc.
The cylinder block and upper crankcase are iniegral cast wlth passagesin ihe block for
coolingthe entire length of thc cylinders. The block forms the major portion of the enginc
with crankshaft.camshaft,pistonsand other relatedcomponents.
1-2 GENEBALINFORMATION- General
The camshaftis of cast iron with the cam lobe su aceschill treated, and is offset from ihe
valve lifter to elimmate the wear of the cam. The camshaft is supported with the three
precrslon type bea ngs which are rcplaceablefor seflice. The camshaft bearingjournals and
the cam lobe sudaces are precislon finished for quiet and efficient operation of the valves-
The connecting rods are of "1" beam section forged steel with a bronze piston pin bushing at
the small end and precision type bearing inserts for the large end.
The pistonsare of light alloy and have slightly oval shopedskirtsso as to providecloserfit
at operatingtemperature The piston pin holes are offset 1.5 mm or 0.059" toward the
camshalt to provide smooth operation Three piston ring grooves are cut above the piston
pln boss
The piston rings consistof two compressionnngs and one oil ring
The crankshaftpulley dlivesthe water pump, fan and alternatorwith a V-belt The drstribu-
tor is mounted on the right sideofthe engrnewhich is drivenby the carnshafiintegralgear
- Ceneral 1 . 3
GENERALINFORIVIATION
The fuel pump is mounted on the right side of the engine, and is operatedby the integral
cam of the camstlaft
The valverocker arm cover is providedwith an air inlet cap which is also an oil filter cap.
The flywheel is of a high gradecast iron, and is attachedonto the rear end of the crank-
shaft with six bolts The ring gearis fitted outsideof the flywheel to providethe meshing
with the startermotor pinion The flywheel is also staticallyand dynamicallybalancedto
minimize the enginevibration The rcar surfacers smooth machinefinished for proper
contact with the clutch disc.

Lubnca ngSystem Y5512,G0842
The lubricating system utilized on the 2R, 12R engine is of an all forced-feedand
partial-flow filtering type insuring positive lubdcation, and the lub cating chcuit is as
shownin the aboveillustration
The oil dischargedfrom the oil pump dividesinto two flowing circuits;one entersinto the
cylinde. block oil hole, while the other entersinto the oil filter whichreturnsto the oil Dan

As the o filter is of the partial-flowfiltering type, the filter capis providedwith the check

pressureis regulatedby the relief valveprovidedin the oil pump to the specifiedpressure

Operauon
When the rgnitron switch is closed, the current flows from the batlery to the voltage relay
points "P0;' and "P1", through the charge warning light, thercfore, the charge warning
light glows At the same time, the exciting current from the battery llows to the rotor coll
ihrough the fuse for the turn signal,voltageregulatorpoints"PL1", "PLo", brushesand the
slip rings,causingihe rotor to magnitlze
ln these conditions, as the rotor is rotated, the three_phasealternating cur'ent is generated
within the stator coil. and the alternating current is fully rectified lnto direct cllrrent by the
six rectifiers This dlrect current voltageis actuatedbetweenthe "B" terminaland the "E"

terminal. Also the output voltage of the stator coil neutral Point becomeshlgher' the
forie of rhe pressurecoil in the voltage relay lncreases! and the point "P0" contactsthe
point "P2" side, resultingthe chargewarninglight to go out
These points are closedwhen the neutral point voltagereachesto 4 5-5'8 volts but the
points are closed while the engine is operated normally
lf the alternator olltput voltage becomeshrgher than the voltage in the battery, the output
current starts flowing to the battery ot to the load When the output voltageincreases
further, the pull-in force of the voltage coil in the voltage reglllator increases Duetothis'
the point "PLo" opens from the low speedpoint "PLl" As the pornt opens, the exclhng
curr;nt to the rotor coil has to pass the control res$tance "Rf', and decreases, resuliingto
reduce the output voltage at "B" terminal.

SPARK PLUG
Description
The temperatureof the electrodeportion must be within the specificrange (it is called
"Self-CleaningTemperature")to obtain the enginepedormancessufficiently.
If the temperatureis maintainedunder 5OO"C(930"F), suchas the engineis operatedfor
long period in slow speedat part throttle opening, the plug tendsto foul that the lnsutaror
tip and the electrodeswill becomecoveredwith carbonand other productsof combustion,
and this will resultmissingor roughnessbecause of their lowet resistance.
On the other hand, if the temperature exceeds500oC(930.F), the carbonor olner
products rs burnt and dispersed.
Hewever,tt is not necessarily good conditlonthat the temperaturcof the electrodesexceed
over500'C (930'F).
If rt exceeds870'C (1,600"F),for instance, the engineis operateal for longperiodunder
approximatelyat full load conditions, the mixture will occur preignitionand deronauon.
and the engineperformances decrease
It is, therefore, advisableto always maintain the tempemtureof the electrocleswlthin
500-8?0"C (930-1,600'F) by utilizingthe properplugwith heatrangebasedon average
drivingconditions.
