c. play simple melodies of a chorale and provide accompaniment.

Let us all stand for an opening prayer. (Students do as told)

Before you take your seats. Kindly pick


up some pieces of papers on the floor and
arrange the chairs properly. (Students do as told)

How are you this morning? We’re fine Sir!

It’s nice to hear that!

1. Drill

Before we will start our discussion, let’s


have first some warm-up.

All you have to do just simply follow


the steps. (Students do as told)

2. Motivation

So, before we start our new lesson this


morning, let’s have first an activity. I
have here a pictures and I want you to
observe what is in the pictures. After
observing, I will call someone and ask
some questions regarding on the
picture.

Class, based on the picture that I


presented to you a while ago, what have
you observed?

B. Discussion Proper

Baroque Period (1685-1750)


-Baroque derived from the
Potuguese word barroco which means
“pearl of irregular shape”

Characteristics of Baroque Music:


 Melodies sound elaborate and
ornamental
 Melodies are not easy to sing or
remember.
 Primarily contrapuntal textures
with some homophony.
 Dynamic contrast – alternation
between loud and soft
 Music genres – operas,
oratorios, suites, toccatas,
concerto grosso, fugue
 Orchestra consists of strings and
continuo.
 Harpsichord and organ are the
keyboard instruments that are
commonly used.
 New forms: 1. Binary- AB 2.
Tertiary – ABC 3. Ground bass
4. fugue

Music Genres of Baroque Music:

1. Concerto – a form of orchestral


music that employs a solo
instrument accompanied by an
orchestra.
2. Concerto Grosso – a form of
orchestral music during the Baroque
period wherein the music is between
a small group of solo instrument
called concertino and the whale
orchestra called tutti.

Famous Composers of the Baroque


Period

1. Johann Sebastian Bach


Born: Germany, March 21, 1685;
Died: July 28, 1750
 He came from a family of
musicians.
 He entered school at age 7
where he was taught religion
and other subjects and
became orphaned at age ten.
 He was a religious man. His
personal and deep faith is
shown in his sacred music.
 He was known for his
compositions for organ,
orchestra and oratorio.

His works include:


 Concerto Grosso
 Masses
 Cantatas
 Fugues
 Works for clavichord and
harpsichord

2. Antonio Vivaldi
Born: Venice, March 4, 1674:
Died: Vienna, July 28, 1741
 Nicknamed il Prete Rosso
(The Red Priest”) because
of his red hair, was an Italian
Baroque composer, Catholic
priest, and a virtuoso
violinist.
 Recognized as one of the
greatest Baroque
composers, his influence
during his lifetime was
widespread over Europe.
 His most famous piece is the
The Four Seasons.

3. George Friedrich Handel


Born: Germany, February 23,
1685; Died: London, April 14,
1759
 He was the second sonn
from the second marriage of
a pastor.
 He is remembered for his
operas and oratorios.
 He became England’s
favorite composer.

or uses nowadays. Without baroque

C. Application

Now, let’s have an activity. All you


have to do is to follow the mechanics.

Everybody read the mechanics.

Mechanics:
1. Each group will roam around the
campus to find variety of sources
which produces sounds similar to the
instruments being studied.
2. Each group will make their own
presentation with the use of their
different sources. Then, perform in
front of the class in a creative way.
3. Each group will be given 5 minutes to
finish the activity.
4. Each group will be graded according
to the rubrics during the presentation.

Rubrics:
Organization - 15 pts.
Creativity - 10 pts.
Group Participation - 5 pts.
Total - 30 pts.
