SBV aims to excel in academic and clinical medicine; research and training;
nurturing passion and enthusiasminto achievement and converting
theoretical knowledge into evidence based practice and research.
SBV has been placed in the top 100 Indian Universities for FOUR consecutive
years 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 at the National InstitutionalRanking
Framework (NIRF) and is ranked 72 among all Universities in India as per
NIRF 2019.
SBV thus enjoys complete autonomy to develop and implement innovative
curriculum and academicprograms and to design its own education process
that is responsive and tailored to the evolving needs and changes of health
sciences, more so with the emphasis on research in health sciences.
The Deemed University’s constituent colleges and courses are all duly
accredited and recognised by therespective statutory bodies such as the
Medical Council of India, Dental Council of India and the Indian Nursing
Council. Graduates of SBVare eligible to register with any state council or
pursue further education in any part of India.
SBV ensures that its programs and courses are recognised internationally, by
registering under appropriateprovisions of various statutory and registration
authorities around the world so as to confer upon the graduates, the
postgraduates and research scholarsthe right to qualify for practice in any
nation.

SBV’s research output has been consistently high in quality and impact, as
evident from its rapidly growingresearch publication record that inspires our
scholars, a fact attested by the region-wise lead position in number of ICMR
sponsored STS research projects (Short Term Studentship) undertaken and
ably accomplished by our undergraduate medical and dental students.
SBV caters to the needs of the patients in the form of alternate medicine. The
presence of Yoga and MusicTherapy is an innovative move to step forward
from Illness to Wellness and treating the patients through complementary
medicine. MoUs signed by SBV for collaborative doctoral program in music
therapy with the IMC University of Applied Sciences, KREMS, Austria and with
Kaivalyadhama Yoga Institute for Yoga research are noteworthy milestones
that bear ample testimony.

PhD@ SBV
SBV offers Part Time (Internal & External) and Full Time PhD programmes under the
Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing Sciences. The PhD programme aims at
nurturing the research talents of the scholars guided by well experienced and talented
Research Supervisors.
Under the Faculty of Medicine, two medical colleges, namely Mahatma Gandhi Medical
College & Research Institute, Pondicherry and ShriSathyaSai Medical College &
Research Institute, Kancheepuram District and constituent centres namelyCentral
Interdisciplinary Research Facility (CIDRF), Centre for Health Professions Education
(CHPE), Centre for Music Therapy Education & Research (CMTER) and Centre for
Yoga Therapy Education & Research (CYTER) offer PhD programmes. Indira Gandhi
Institute of Dental Sciences, Pondicherry offers PhD programme in Dentistry and
Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College, Pondicherry offers PhD in Nursing Sciences.
SBV offers flexibility in choosing the areas / discipline for the Scholar’s doctoral work. The
available PhD programmes are as follows

M.V.K. Iyer Memorial Research Ph.D. Fellowshipfor the academic year 2019-20 is offered to
deserving Full Time Ph.D scholars in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing Sciences.
The Fellowships each of amount Rs.15,000 per month is given and an annual contingency grant
of Rs. 50,000/- for a maximum duration of Three years, depending upon annual satisfactory
progress report of the Scholar.
Well qualified and experienced Research Supervisors endowed with zeal and passion for
innovation and ethics based research form the team of PhD Guides at SBV. The guides are
the mentors for the Scholars right from the point of registration until the Scholar completes
his Public Viva Voce. SBV also encourages its scholars to publish their PhD thesis and also
provides lots of opportunities to participate in various conferences, seminars at National /
International level.

A total of 91 faculty members form the esteemed team of SBV approved Research
Supervisors.
A National Level Entrance Test for admissions to the PhD programme of SBV for the June
Session of the academic year 2019 will be conducted on 24th August2019(Saturday) at
SBV.
The Entrance Test will essentially comprise of Part I for 60 marks and Part II for 40
marks. The duration will be 2 hours and is between 10 am and 12 noon.

The passing minimum will be 50% aggregate in Part I and Part II put together and a
minimum of 40% each in Part I & Part II. The candidates will attend the interview at
the respective centre, in the afternoon (2 pm onwards) on the day of the Entrance
Test.
The candidates will be required to be present at the venue, at least 15 minutes prior
to the commencement of the Entrance Test. They will not be allowed inside the
exam hall 15 minutes following the commencement of the Entrance Test. Candidates
will be allowed to leave the exam hall30 minutes after the commencement of Part II.
Selection of the candidates to the PhD programme will be based on the performance
at the National Level Entrance Test (70%) and the interview (30%). The allotment
of Seat to the PhD programme is through a counseling session conducted by SBV.
All questions carry equal marks. No negative mark is given for wrong answer.
Following the Entrance Test in the Morning Session on 24th August 2019, the
interview will be conducted on the same after noon of 24th August 2019 followed by
a counseling session for the short listed candidates at SBV.
