Line Arresters – Practical Application Case.
Intro: 110 kV transmission line (OHL) situated

in a mountain area (Alpes, Austria)
Problem: in one section of OHL number of

outages were much higher in compare with
the average level for this OHL
Analysis: line modeling, based on lightning

data, confirmed that this particular section is
the most susceptible to lightning strikes, and
existed lightning protection as single shielding
wire on top is NOT sufficient.

SOLUTION:
18 tower were equipped by

surge arresters
3 earth (protection) wires
2 surge arresters per tower

(phases A and B)
RESULT: the number of outages

decresed dramatically (3 times
lower in compare with initial
situation)
